Ever since Kaida learnt that she had a new sister from the four that she already has, she can't stop thinking about her— Koharu. What did she look like? Had they ever hurt her? Did she have a quirk? Was she grumpy, like Kaida had been at her age? Or was she gentle, like her elder sister Kasumi, had been to her? What was her favourite food? Did she have any hobbies, or was she simply just locked away in that castle like a princess, guarded by a dragon?[break][break]

If Kaida is correct in her assumptions, Koharu was born to replace her. That means she's only around five years old. Just barely a foot stepped into the world.[break][break]

"You're thinking about her again, aren't you?"[break][break]

Kenzou's words snapped Kaida from her daze, making her look away from the sheer white dove that had perched on the windowsill of her mentor's office. By the time she looked back, it's gone. "Why wouldn't I be?" [break][break]

"Because I want you to stop thinking, and start acting with that stormy brain of yours that's always filled with bad thoughts," Kenzou slapped his folder on Kaida's head as he passed by her, making her growl. "you'll cloud up the whole building. And we don't want any negative thoughts for the meeting today, do we?"[break][break]

Her gaze lowered. "I suppose not."[break][break]

Kenzou's smile is wistful. "Come on, Kaida. This is something positive. The government and Hero Association is finally making a sanctioned move on your family, and less people, including your sister, will suffer for it."[break][break]

Kaida looked up at him as Kenzou turned his back to her, gathering up his script for the meeting. There's still numerous bandages on his form— he only woke up from his coma fully about two weeks ago, a month after the Mikurajima incident, where he suffered a near-fatal injury by one of Kaida's brothers, Katsuro. But despite glaring death in the eye, he's still willingly putting his life on the line to save Koharu, and help the public. What did the public ever do for him? Kaida looked down at her own bandaged hand, injuries from a week ago still sustained on her body. The public never did anything for her.[break][break]

"It's time to start looking forward, Kaida. For your own sake. You have someone else to save now."[break][break]

"Yeah, it's not just about you, ya know?" Detective Luki's voice shrilled through the air as he flung open the office door. Kaida still hasn't forgiven him for berating her and Jun at the interrogation. "It's about everyone this time, including your lil' sis! Makes me shiver in my boots, wondering what's happening to her." Luki made a dismal effort at a sad face. "Anyway, doors are open now and everyone's showing up to the Agency. Come down to the meeting room when you're ready. Superintendent Aoshima is here too."[break][break]

When Kenzou looked back to Kaida, her gaze was on the window again, before she stood with a sigh and exited the office with Luki and Kenzou in tow. Time to face the future, she supposed.

This had to be some form of betrayal right? To believe in someone so hard that that belief convinced a pro hero of all people to ask this person if they could join a sanctioned raid despite said someone having no experience whatsoever in them? Like. He's just a support student! Who's only built things in labs and would call 110 at the sight of any serious conflict! What the actual hell?

But the one who deemed him capable enough to be involved in the raid was Kenzou. Yes, that Kenzou, Kaida's mentor, the one whose injuries inflicted on him by Kaida's yakuza family resulted in his coma. He's awake again, and in being so, invited Kei to an assault on the family's headquarters to confiscate their weaponry - because that went so well last time - but, more importantly, to also locate and retrieve a little girl who was apparently Kaida's sister she didn't know she had. Kei had never met the hero in his life yet he knew his name, so that could only mean the senior had spoken about him. Highly enough for the hero to ask him personally.

On one hand Kei felt that both of them were making a grave mistake pulling a support student with no fighting experience in something like this, but on the other it's like... what was he gonna do, refuse to help save a little girl from an abusive family? Of course not. The guilt would eat at him for the rest of his life if he did.

So Kei gave that job to anxiety instead as he followed the directions to the Perihelion Agency. It still ate at him as he sat in one of the chairs in the meeting room, shakily nibbling a cracker because he wasn't sure if he could stomach anything else right now. Surrounding him were other heroes and some people around his age - students as well most likely, many he didn't recognize and the ones he did he knew were hero majors. Some of them were staring at him in a mix of what he thought was pity and confusion since nothing was happening.

He slid down his chair a bit and took another bite of his food. What time was that briefing supposed to start again?

She had fully recovered from her death experience, gone and done several other dumb things, and at the end of the day got invited to join in on the raid to the Ikarashi clan compound. This was...far from her smartest decision. She had gone with Kaida every step of the way up to this point, and she wasn't going to abandon her friend now. There was no telling what lay in store for her, or for Kaida, or for everyone else involved in this. It was just a matter of fulfilling her obligations. She had stayed away from the main gathering area as more people would just induce more anxiety in her, and in pacing back in forth she spun her rings. She had chosen to go in her hero suit, though she almost decided against it. The only reason why she was wearing it was because there was no telling if her anchors were going to be useful or not, and it was better to go into it prepared than not. As of now it was time to wait for the main briefing, and get things underway... Auden Kei Hada Kaida Ikarashi

With Auden not always having the free time to help everyone that came along, he was surprised when Jun offered to have him help out. It was a slight nudge from her, but in reality Felix had told him to keep an eye on Kaida. Student confidentiality was important, so Felix flagged it as "trying to make friends with her" rather than something being wrong with her situation. When two people in your life pointed something out to you, it was best to pay attention.

He'd come in after Jun to try not to make it obvious that he was there because of her. Auden would simply nod to the faces that he recognized, staying near the exit of the area that he was in. There was an uneasy feeling in the room, perhaps because he felt like he really shouldn't be there. Auden didn't know Kaida, but he would never turn down the chance to save family members when they were in need. Auden wouldn't let anything happen to those that were defenseless.

Eventually, Auden would go further into the room and sit down, crossing his arms and sitting on one of the chairs that were provided to him. Auden's biggest fear was that someone wasn't going to take the case seriously, or that they wouldn't realize how dangerous it is to have a child in danger. Without knowing all the information, Auden wanted to keep his mind open to what this information would be and how he could actually help the situation; it was too easy to be a bystander when you felt no connection, but Auden wasn't going to let that happen.

Kaida followed at Luki and Kenzou's heels, glancing down to see Yogi, the great white pyrenees belonging to Kenzou, happily trotting at her side. When did he get here? As if in response to her confusion, Yogi glanced up with a big happy smile— or was that just him panting? She didn't know, but was nonetheless calmed in his presence. She wasn't a dog person, but Yogi brought warmth to anyone's day, much like his owner. [break][break]

Kenzou waved at a few of his employees as they passed by with a grin, before stopping outside of the meeting room. "I have a few things I want to go over with Detective Andou before we start. I'll be right behind you. Why don't you go say hello to your friends in the meantime?" [break][break]

"Fine."[break][break]

Not wanting to spend another second closer to Luki, who stared after her before diverting his attention back to the fire hero, Kaida opening the door to the meeting room. Immediately her eyes landed on Kei, the one person she had discussed most about to Kenzou in terms of potential— but unfortunately, never once mentioning his hesitation and due anxiety in battle. Had she known Kenzou had his eye on him, she would have stopped her mentor on the spot. The last thing she wanted was someone like Kei getting caught up in this whole disastrous kerfuffle, but he was already here. Kaida would assure him nonetheless he could back out if he wanted to.[break][break]

Her gaze crossed the room, landing on the various heroes and police officers, along with Superintendent Aoshima who gave her a quiet nod, to land on both Jun and Auden. She expected Jun, but for Auden to answer the cause as well? Perhaps Jun had told him about the raid because of their student and boss-employee relationship, or he had simply answered the call for help. Yogi left her side immediately upon seeing the students with a blurred wagging tail, letting a happy whine escape his jowls as he greeted Kei, Auden and Jun in order, eventually choosing to sit down by Jun. [break][break]

She approached them all, an unhappy grimace on her face, but relief washed through her too. "I'm gladdened to see the three of you here today." Kaida said with a dip of her head— a bow. "It must have been a difficult choice. What this raid entails is anything but safety and reassurance, and you're willingly putting yourselves at risk to help my younger sister and conquer my family's settlement. I..." She stuttered slightly. "... thank you from the bottom of my heart. Sincerely."

You would think that with time, the nerves would go away. That if one stayed in one place for long enough to see that nothing was happening, their mind would be put at ease as there would be no reason to worry. Well whoever said that was a liar because Kei was getting more antsy if anything as he sat in his chair. His body practically begged him to just stand up and run. Kaida would forgive him for doing so surely, but would he be able to forgive himself?

He was so lost in thought that he didn't realize something approached him until he felt a poke on his leg, prompting a jolt from the support student before he covered his mouth to barely muffle a scream. His head whipped to the culprit-

Which was a dog??

Sure enough, a dog as white as snow was looking up at him, tongue lolled out in greeting. Whose dog was this and why is it here? Not that Kei was complaining or anything- he loved animals and this one just seemed like such a happy one. Looking at his wristband first as if to remind himself it was there, he then stretched a hesitating hand out to pet the pup's head. And just like that he was touching a cloud as it wagged its tail.

"Ohhh my god," Kei couldn't help but coo at the canine. "Hi there, it's so nice to meet you." He let himself relish in its softness before the dog left his side to greet the others. Jun, whom he's embarrassed to admit he didn't notice her entrance at all, and Auden, the literal head of Rising Phoenix. Right. Okay. This operation was pulling in big names today.

And speaking of operation, his eyes eventually landed on the subject of the charge. It prompted Kei to sit up straighter, giving the senior a wave in greeting. "Hey Kaida." He eyed the empty wrapper he still held in his raised hand. It was crumpled up in a fist as he let out an awkward laugh. "Sorry- um."

He took a deep breath. "I'm not gonna lie and say I'm happy to be here. Just the thought of what we're up against kinda makes me wanna throw up." Another laugh, another breath. "But I wanna do what I can to help. Especially when your sister's life is on the line."

The nervousness his eyes usually held went away, determination flickering in if only for a moment. "We'll get her home. I'm sure of it."

She had to make an effort to not make eye contact with anyone, as she knew the moment she did she'd melt into a pile of useless. That was the last thing that anyone needed right now. Still, it was good to see people that she knew, nodding to Auden before returning the bow to Kaida. "I'm just glad you reached out for help instead of...you know. Charging in. He knew that his being there was uncalled for, so he tried his best not to give it much attention. He was an outlier; he didn't know Kaida personally or have much to say about the situation other than aid due to his own experiences. For those reasons, he stayed silent and kept his mouth shut, wanting nothing more than to be a support in this situation.

It was only when Kaida got closer to them that he perked up, ready and willing to talk if needed. "Yeah uh, thanks for allowing me to be here. I'll help however I can, healing or otherwise." He wanted to be sincere, and he wanted to show that he was on the side of neutrality, rather than trying to make it seem like he was anything special. Experience or not, Auden wanted to be unbiased. Looking over to Kei, he would look them up and down, almost unsure of what to think. They hadn't interacted much, but they seemed solid enough for the job as well. If their eyes met, Auden would give them a gentle head bow. Turning back over to Kaida, he'd clear his throat. "Tell us what is needed of us."

Kaida's surprise to their responses was obvious. Her brows raised considerably at Kei's sudden and unexpected determination, and at Jun and Auden's words. Really, she was... was happy the right word for this? Kaida laughed. Yes, laughed. But in her own way— a small upwards lilt of her lips as she chuckled, surprised, but happy that they were willingly partaking in the raid. "... Thank you. All of you." Her face grew straight again, the moment of vulnerability gone. "Kenzou Kagutsuchi and Superintendant Aoshima will explain the proceedings of the attack."[break][break]

After she had spoken, the aforementioned hero entered the room with a disgruntled looking Luki. Had him and Kenzou argued about something? Curious, she peered after the pair as they spoke briefly to Superintendant Aoshima. A stout man with salt and pepper hair, dressed in formal police wear but with aged wrinkles present on his face, nodded a few times before moving to the projector of which a presentation was shone on the far wall at the head of the table in the middle of the room. Aoshima must have been the one to make Luki interrogate Jun and her. Kaida sat down near the middle, watching fondly as Yogi stopped his pacing and sat down by Kei with another content rumble. "YOUR ATTENTION, PLEASE!"[break][break]

Ah, there it was. Kenzou's voice. Having being used to her eardrums ruptured in his presence, she didn't flinch, but looking at the other police officers and heroes seated in the room was like witnessing a tree being blown down by strong winds. Any prior conversation was shattered as they stared at the blazing professional hero, who simply stood there with his arms crossed and that same-old relentless eccentric smile.[break][break]

"Thank you, Kagutsuchi." Aoshima grumbled, taking his hands from his ears. "I thank you all for attending today. With the Ikarashi Clan gone to shadows and their movements silent for the past twenty years, efforts to bring this yakuza syndicate to justice for their crimes have all been void. Until now, thanks to Miss Kanjo and Ikarashi's information, a settlement, believed to contain various weapon prototypes has been brought to light. Takamagahara is an immense castle located in the Niigata region, outside of Nagaoka. The aim is to infiltrate this base on the warrant that members of the Clan reside there, discover any manufacturing taking place, and make arrests."[break][break]

"Of course, that is not everything!" Kenzou exclaimed, watching as the projector flipped through its slides. "According to my student's new information, there is a high likelihood that an undiscovered main member of the Ikarashi Clan, Kaida's younger sister. A girl likely of five years, no less!"[break][break]

Kaida's gaze lowered and dismayed whispers echoed. Despite the Clan's reputation, a young innocent girl was a young innocent girl, no matter her heritage.[break][break]

"Your duty tomorrow is to prioritise retrieval of young Koharu. Apprehending weaponry comes second!" The projector flipped to the next page— satellite imagery of the castle Takamagahara showed itself, an immense white fortress surrounded by forestry. "Simply to say, this is no laughing matter! I have investigated into the yakuza for the past five years, and despite my induced rest after Tokushima, I have to say there is no raid that has amounted to this level yet! You would do well to prepare yourselves!" [break][break]

Kaida was listening intently to the hero until that point. He had been investigating into the yakuza, privately? She blanched. He knew how important the yakuza was to Kaida— she hated them, loathed them. Why hadn't he mentioned this prior?[break][break]

"Before I move onto the procedure of the assault, are there any questions?"

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Kenzou's announcement nearly made her leap for cover, reaching up to nurse one of her ears. If there was one thing this did, it was get her attention. As the ringing in her ears began to die down she would sit there and listen to the briefing. Some of this information was new to her, but not much. If anything, it just gave names to things she was already aware of. That being said, it was good information to know and something to keep in mind as they progressed forward. That said, this was not going to be an easy task. The few times she had crossed paths with this yakuza organization were harrowing, and this was not going to be a walk in the park. It wasn't even likely they had surprise. Something had to be done, though, and if Kaida was meant to be the Ikarashi's trump card then they were at a severe disadvantage. Kei couldn't help but let out another wheezy laugh at Jun's comment, because really, it was a fair thought. "It really is weird isn't it?" He tucked the cracker wrapper back in his pocket already, but honestly he wished he hadn't. It left him with nothing to do with his hands. His fingers twitched with nothing to fidget with. "Kagutsuchi-san asked me if I could come and, well, here I am!" Jazz hands for good measure. In a way though he was glad he accepted the- invitation? If it could be called that? Whatever the term, Kaida's gratitude and moment of ease was worth him doing his part.

His own moment of calm went away when the hero called their attention, making him jolt in his seat and nearly cursing from the surprise. God, he forgot how loud the man could be. He was just glad the dog chose to sit next to him.

Kei idly petted the canine as he listened to the superintendent and the hero, resisting the urge to nod along so as not to distract the other attendees with his movement. The goals and stakes were clear regardless; they had a location on where illegal activity was being conducted. It also held a little girl within, surely being mistreated like Kaida had been. He nibbled his toothpick.

The visions still played back in his head sometimes.

If anything, it was good that there were names he could pin to it all. Kei remained silent when the floor was opened for questions, eyeing the rest of the group to see if any of them would ask something.

At the deafening silence, Kenzou hummed loudly. "Nothing? Good!"[break][break]

Despite the loud comforting boom of her mentor's voice, there was the inevitable dread like an icy trickle down the valley of her back, a snake waiting with its jaws unhinged to strike. In a way, she felt she should be comforted— this was the first true step forward to the collapse of her family, and hopefully yakuza as a whole... but it was a risk, such a huge, huge risk, and deep down she knew that no one would get out unscathed. No one could escape death, especially when it came early, and with a heavy heart, Kaida realised it may happen tomorrow, whether to friend or foe.[break][break]

Even with her hatred for her family, she hoped it didn't happen at all.[break][break]

The meeting ended after a couple hours with careful devising and strategy, her position within the assault burned into the back of her eyelids. Kaida went to bed early, knowing sleep wouldn't come easy. Then, before the sun rose, at four in the morning, all forces converged on the town in which Takamagahara was situated. At seven in the morning, with the sun on the horizon, the castle was surrounded.[break][break]

Kenzou, now adorned in his hero attire, breathed in loudly with his exhale outlined by the fog of the chilly morning air. "What a cold snap! Not cold enough for me though, hahaha!" He looked down to Kei, who he had been partnered with, the other heroes milling about anxiously as they waited for the signal to attack. Kaida wasn't present. "Young Hada, this is your first on-field assignment, yes?" Kenzou asked, grinning at the student. "Well, there's no need to worry! Just stick with me and everything will be okay!"

As if in agreement, Yogi, who was dressed in tactical gear, boofed loudly at Kenzou's side, wagging his tail as he panted. Kenzou laughed loudly again. "Well said, Yogi! As we were assigned, all you and Yogi need to do is use your quirk to search for that young girl, while Yogi uses his sense of smell! I will guard you while you do so!" The flame hero suddenly quieted, as did the convoy around them, waiting with baited breath. "It's almost time. Get ready."[break][break]

Through the forest pathway ahead of them loomed the castle fortress ominously, outlit by the rising sun over the glittering ocean, sparkling like a thousand cerulean gems. A pretty view shadowed by uncertainty.

Kei was nervous. That was nothing new, but the reason behind the nerves he felt was wholly different from anything he'd experienced before. The hours between the meeting and the actual raid did nothing to abate this worry. He only slept early because he knew how important this operation was. This wasn't a test he was afraid of failing. This wasn't some party he had to socialize his way through. Lives were at stake here.

He couldn't allow himself to slip even once.

Kenzou's voice nearly made him jump out of his skin. Right. He was here, at the estate they were meant to infiltrate. He didn't have much in terms of disguises, only wearing the darkest clothes he had in his closet that kept him warm in the cold. But he had his gear worn on his back. At least he wasn't going to be completely defenceless when they head in.

Kei turned to the hero, trying to push down his early breakfast with a grin. "Yeah!" Glancing away for a moment, he muttered under his breath. "When it came to anythin' official at least." The number of times he'd been caught in the middle of a crisis as someone who could help was ticking up for some reason, which was not something he was fond of. He nodded at Kenzou though, thankful he wasn't alone. "But yeah- no venturin' off for me here." He'd rather not be caught in such a dangerous place by his lonesome thanks.

His smile turned more genuine at Yogi's bark. At first he was concerned they were bringing an animal to the raid when illegal weapons were involved. But the dog was trained, so surely he knew what he was doing. Honestly though Kei was trying not to comment on how cute he looked in his gear. "Find the girl. That's all we need to do." He placed his hands on his own face. "Find the girl. Find the girl."

Kei crouched down and his eyes eventually rested on the castle ahead, repeating the mantra he made for himself as he awaited the signal.

In ancient wartimes, there was often debate on how correctly tactics were used to ambush enemies. An army could find solace in the night, moving unseen and using the new moon's dismal light to their advantage. Whereas others could brazenly attack in broad daylight, using surprise to kill dozing enemies. But there was never any stealth in it. Not in the sun— not until Kaida reflected on her memories, thinking of what tactics her family would use against their opponents.[break][break]

High ground.[break][break]

It's a simple fact. Whoever has the high ground has the advantage. Whoever has the high ground can see all of their enemies. But there's no higher ground than the air itself. [break][break]

Wind ripped and roared at Kaida's mane and feathers as she soared through the clouds, the sun beating down on her back like she was a lizard dehydrating under a too-hot heat lamp— but it's a small price to pay for the advantage the sun gave her. It's pure irony, she thought. The sun is the one thing most lifeforms look up to and enjoy, and here she is, hiding in its shadow. Kaida's thoughts flash back to the meeting.[break][break]

Kaida dove, folding her wings. Beneath her, Takamagahara. Behind her, the sun, the brightest light known to man, an object that no one could look at for too long, a perfect spot to hide in— a blindspot that no one could find her. Upon Takamagahara's halls she knew there were turrets hidden beneath— but none of them rise from their positions to fire at her, in time, that is. [break][break]

Stray leaves brushed against her wingtips as she leveled out, wind buffeting against her feathers as the telltale metallic thrung of the turrets rung throughout the air, robotically rising from their graves to aim at her. But it's already too late with the ice surging from her throat and through her teeth as Kaida soared past at blinding speeds, obliterating the weapons lining the wall, explosions thundering through the atmosphere as the dragoness destroyed them in one fell swoop. Small glaciers lined the top of the wall as fiery ash burst upwards, signifying that she had succeeded. Kaida roared out as she turned, seeing the rest of the turrets from the east and west wall emerge and turn to aim at her.[break][break]

At the sound, Kenzou perked up, looking behind him, then at Kei. "That's it! Everyone move, move! Go!"[break][break]

Footsteps thundered through the forest as the army encroached on the castle. The raid had begun.

[Kei Hada]

Kei knew the plan. He sat in that briefing room for who knew how long, listening to the plan of attack. He was there when the genius of Kaida's idea was realized, incorporated, ensured it would be followed to the letter.

But god. He was still not ready to witness a whole dragon fly overhead before she flew down and blasted ice at the wall.

His eyes didn't linger on her form of course. The sun was a dangerous thing to stare at- the last thing he wanted was to blind himself now of all times. But he looked only for long enough to realize they were really doing this. That they were actually going to close in on a guarded yakuza base. Once again, he thought about just how insane he was for agreeing to do this.

But there was the roar. Kagutsuchi's call. Too late to back out now.

Kei moved forward along with the others.

He did his best not to surge ahead of the rest, knowing he was to be protected due to his inexperience. But they also knew to give him space; his gear called for it, feet off the ground as mechanical arms carried him to the location. Specialized in traversing rough terrain, he easily scaled up the wall once he got there.

Only to land in front of a turret.

It turned towards him.

Fuck.

Like vipers catching their prey, two metal arms charged forward, one to impale the base of the machine while the other grasped at the barrel to snap it in two.

Kei covered his mouth to hold in a gasp. Man. Sometimes he'd forgotten how strong he made his gear out to be. But also, so much for stealth on his end. He could only hope the others could make enough noise to cover any he was making.

The junior dropped down the inner wall. He was in at least. Yay for that.
