ire spat into the air, radiating heat which flushed against the contestants' skin. Some might have thought the obstacles and traps a bit excessive, but the students of UAU typically fought machines the size of small buildings in their first year. Honestly, this was nothing. Still, Farrin didn't intend on being caught on atop any of the grated flooring that spurt the flames skyward for long.

A few medics with various healing quirks stood on standby around the arena in case of any grievous injuries. Farrin didn't intend on suffering any. That said, he wasn't familiar with his partner, and unknown variables could spell all sorts of trouble in the grand equation. Some people teamed up beforehand for the festival's many challenges, others could throw their names in and were assigned teammates. Farrin had opted for the latter. Most of his "go-to" teammates weren't available at the moment. Cup half full: it was more appropriate training. You didn't know who you might be working with out in the field when shite hit the fan. 

There were a few minutes before things kicked off, minutes Farrin spent stretching his arms and legs while he waited for Ylva. A moment later, his fists flew through the air, boxing out an opponent only he could see. Stillness was not a card in the time-turner's deck. Not when the world moved so slowly around him. Luckily, he had long ago learned how to kill time. Figuratively.

All her training and hard work were for this moment, something that her parents, watching from the stands, never failed to remind her about. It was not that they needed to, as if there was one thing to put extra energy towards, and it was this. [break][break]

She had submitted her name for every event for the festival to dominate each and everyone, no matter who she needed to step over to do so. There was no option for failure. That was very clear, and her demeanor showed just that. She was doing some simple basic stretches as she approached her assigned partner 'Farrin O'Rourke.' They have no issues as long as he was in it to win. She'd approach uncharacteristically compared to her normal anti-social behavior. "Ylva." she'd say without any further pleasantries. "Your name, quirk, and anything else relevant. I'm here to win." From the proctor, she understood the goal of the game. There were three flags, with only one being required to pass. "We're getting all three flags. Any problem with that?"[break][break]

he enemy yielded. They always did. That was the issue with shadowboxing. There wasn't a move they could make that wasn't anticipated. It wouldn't be like that out in the field. And not in this spectacle of a game. This was a full-contact exercise. Everything goes. Good, Farrin shined brightest where heavy-weighing rules weren't chained to his ankles. 

A cold breeze. A shivering running down his spine. Farrin turned to his partner's arrival: an introduction and little more in the way of pleasantries. "Farrin. I can speed things up n' slow 'em down. You?" He asked of her quirk. 

A few more seconds until the start bell rang, and they would have to move—plenty of time for a few more stretches. Farrin crossed one across his chest and used the other to tug on it, stretching his shoulder. "No problem at all. Winnin' is what I do." He said flatly. 

Farrin considered himself a pretty nice guy, but kindness did little to dampen his competitive spirit and pride. He didn't play to win. He lived to win. Winning signified expertise, and he wouldn't be able to save anyone out there if he was anything less than an expert. Villains didn't play fair, they didn't adhere to rules, and they didn't concern themselves with casualties. So, the greatest heroes needed to be so far ahead, so much more capable than their enemies, that their raw prowess would overwhelm all odds. He needed to be the best, to balance scales long weighed against him. No, not balance them, to flip them entirely. Only when he stood atop the mountain could he force villainy into complete and utter submission. That's why he was here; it was all he had left now. 

The bell rang. The teams ran. It was time to blitz everyone in the eyes of the world

[attr="class","nikki109"]She would look him up and down, he was about a foot taller than her but unlike that giant stop sign she had for a roommate he seemed like he knew what he was doing. "Good enough." She would close her eyes for a moment, sensing that everyone in the arena was equidistant from the center which meant first come first serve. If Farrin and her got all the flags, they'd become the priority targets, which was exactly what she was hoping for. "I freeze." If she ending up competing against him, she wasn't going to give him more information than necessary. [break][break]

"If you can speed things up, then apply that to me. We get to the center as fast as possible, and I'll do the rest." Ylva wasn't overexaggerating, in fact it was perfectly in line with her capabilities. She was slow, and moving targets faster than her was troublesome but once she got into a fixed position there wasn't much anyone could do about it. Especially if they needed something from her. She would take a running stance and assuming Farrin obliged she would take off alongside him, moving at speeds that most would think she wasn't capable of...which was correct but hey, she was here to win.[break][break]

reeze? That didn't explain much. Disappointment swelled within, followed by an unheard sigh. Was it literal? Like ice manipulation? If so, could she generate or only manipulate? Could she operate at range, or must she touch a target? Did she herself freeze? A thousand questions that went unanswered. There wasn't any time. He had to give her some heads up before the bell rang. Her proposed strategy wasn't foreign to him. Farrin sped Freja up all the time when they were caught in a pinch, but first-timers could have some odds reactions. 

"Sounds good. Fair warnin' though, I'm told it feels like takin' an adrenaline shot, so be ready," he offered. 

Whether that was an apt description or not, Farrin wasn't sure. When he first used his quirk, heck- even now, it felt like lightning in his veins, but was that like taking an adrenaline shot? He wasn't sure. The analogy seemed to cut it with most though. Hopefully, she wouldn't freak out when the world appeared to slow around her. 

"N' keep close. Further yuh' are, more difficult it is ta' keep yuh' sped up." 

The closer one was, the better he could form perfectly fit fields to them. Bonus points if they were in his line of sight. A malformed field could be lethal. Speed up or slow down one part of the body and not the other, and the blood would coagulate at the edge of the fields in a blink. Organ damage of all sorts was possible. Time was dangerous business. Powerful, but dangerous. 

Speaking of time, the bell rang, and Farrin was off. He ascended a ramp and boomed past the grated flooring that spat flames into the air all too slowly. He was long gone. His personal field accelerated further, then slowed to keep pace with Ylva.

In the distance, two figures took form, leaping through one of the fire-spitting plates just in time to avoid any damage. None were closer to the center than Farrin and Ylva from the looks of it, but those had to be the closest second. One's had several arms and held a bow in his hand while the other looked like a ninja.

The spider-looking fella took aim with his bow while on the move and fired. One arrow. Two. Then, a third. All misses, but they were growing closer. Farrin raised his right arm and fired two stun rounds back. One whipped by the spider fella. The second caught the ninja head-on. He flipped, then landed right on his feet and kept going. Somehow, no damage was done. 

"An electrical quirk of some sort, or the suit?" Farrin asked himself as the two continued their sprint.

She would take in the feeling, something she wasn't too unfamiliar with, as every aspect of her training in the last few months had been high-stress, adrenaline-pumping exercises. Even if she wasn't aware of it, she had much more in common with Farrin than she could have ever guessed. [break][break]

The bell and they were off, and Ylva moved faster than she thought she'd ever be able to. She didn't have time to think about this as the competitors were already making their move. She could feel not just these two but at least one other that was making a beeline for them from the side. They might have been busy with the two and the last person was trying to capitalize on it, but for now Ylva would go after the ninja, freezing the space beneath the ground to prevent any traction. For the second person she would create a barrier in between them which would force the man to move, hopefully giving both her and Farrin enough time to get to the flags before anyone else.[break][break]

he air chilled ice streaked along the beneath the other team and walled them off. Farrin had his answer. Ylva froze things in quite the literal sense with ice. He didn't see the third party his partner could feel out, but in the distance, a flash of violet light snatched his attention.

They were further out than himself, Ylva, and team ninja-spider, but Farrin could see at least two other teams trading blows. Another flash of that purple light, then something that looked like a wrecking ball crashed a catwalk, shattering the walkway. They wouldn't pose any threat for now, but it was worth noting. Hopefully, those two teams would keep each other occupied long enough for Farrin and Ylva to take a quick and decisive win. 

Farrin sprinted ahead, up one of many ramps that would leave the students atop a large ring. The ring, in turn, overlooked a massive, circular platform on which the three flags stood. "How far can yuh' jump?" Farrin would shout over the boom of a distance explosion, the din of battle between the teams he saw earlier. The intended route to the platform consisted of one of two bridges, which were nearly equidistant from their position on the ring, but there was always a chance those bridges would set off traps of some sort. Ylva could probably create a bridge of ice for the two of them, but would she be able to run across it easily? Would he, when moving at the speeds they were? Moving slowly would leave them open to attack, which, looking back, appeared to be quite a possibility. The ninja-looking fella was nearly at the edge of the ice field she left behind, and the spider fella wasn't too far behind. 

If Ylva could neither jump herself nor create a reliable bridge, Farrin could try to jump both of them across, but her cold demeanor would probably lean towards absofuckinglutely not. An arrow would whisk just by Farrin, dragging his attention back to the spider-guy. A turn of the wrist and a wall of temporal deceleration would form behind them, nearly stilling the next arrow entirely. It would only last about thirty seconds or so. "Time ta' move," he said, ready to jump if necessary.

Approaching the destroyed bridge and posing the question, Ylva would normally let him know it wasn't far. However, with the temporal boost, came a different option. "Not far. I'll make a path. Move quickly." With the extra speed, she didn't have to worry about the platform breaking since they could get across before her quirk worked against her and the ice turned back into water. Positioning herself in a way that would put Farrin as her shield, she would begin to make small platforms, starting from the ground up and making rudimentary structures at the top. Each would only exist for a few seconds maybe so Ylva would make her way across as quickly as possible then attempt to reinforce them so Farrin could make it as well. [break][break]

As if she had eyes in the back of her head, she would soon find herself at odds with another participant who attempted to push her back over the barrier as they ran up with bull-like horns. She would grip onto them and push back with all her might slowly losing the battle but putting up enough resistance that Farrin could intervene. This much interference meant that they were getting closer to their goal.[break][break]

hey only needed to cross that final threshold and the gold and glory was as good as theirs. Gold being the flags and glory being the boon of a swelling reputation. Farrin cared little for fame, but if he could catch someone like Sterling Soul's eye, maybe intern with her or another renowned hero, there was no telling what he might learn. And for that reason, he boomed ahead. Grab the flags and hall them back for the W.

There was only one obstacle in the way now. The big ol' bull charging against Ylva's grasp. Well, that and the rest of the students that were closing in. Ylva was right, he needed to move quick. Fortunately, quick was kind of Farrin's thing. He leaped across the icy pillars and platforms and landed hard against the central arena, the platform on which the flags stood. The bull had charged from one of the metal bridges connecting the arena to the above ring and was trying to push Ylva over the edge. 

Not today, bud. 

Farrin boomed ahead, then dropped into a slide, sweeping the muscular monster of student's feet out from under him. No matter Ylva's strength she would find the beast far more susceptible now, as he fell over sideways. Farrin wouldn't wait, however. He slid right back onto his feet and spun, firing an adhesive round at the bull's lower body. 

Another arrow soared just past Farrin—the same as earlier. The spider and the ninja were approaching. It was time to make some decisions. "Yuh' more prone ta' fight er' flight? Farrin asked with a little whimsy, then thumbed toward the three objectives behind him, "Movin' fast is what I do. One o' us should run the flags back. I could stand n' fight the rest o' these guys as they show up, though, if yuh' prefer. If we both stay ta' fight, we risk bein' bogged down by numbers." Farrin was confident enough to tackle either job, so he would leave the decision to his teammate.

The struggle with the bull ended almost as quickly as it began. Farrin made a more than adequate partner, with the two of them making up for each other's weaknesses. Of course while she wasn't as ignorant to believe she didn't have weaknesses she'd rather die than share them aloud. Once the bull quirker was sufficiently stunned Ylva would freeze him over, since they were so close to the flags she didn't have to worry about the ice melting.[break][break]

"Fight." She said flatly. There wasn't a chance in hell she could outrun anyone in this arena, and more importantly than that, she was at a disadvantage if she stayed mobile. "We don't need to outrun them. Stay behind me." Area denial was her specialty and with everyone converging on one spot there wasn't a chance in hell that they could avoid her. It would just take a few seconds of concentrating.[break][break]

She had used something of this scale once before, against Jun, in fact, but this time, she was increasing the size of the area to her current maximum. "Buy me 30 seconds. Let them get as close as they can." She would clasp her hands together and close her eyes, picking up on every possible inch of moisture in the area aside from the radius around her, including Farrin.[break][break]

Assuming Farrin could keep them all at bay what would come next would be a flash of diamond dust in the arena followed by a snap freeze of everyone and everything in the arena aside from herself, Farrin, and the flags. At this point, they could take their time to move back to their goal and complete their course, once Ylva had time to recoup, of course.

hirty seconds? He could do that. The hourglass had Farrin's name on it. Every bead, every grain of sand was his to command. He whipped one arm aside, and two spheres of a nearly translucent field, framed in an emerald glow, formed. One was about three meters in diameter around Ylva, while the other covered the outer edge of the arena. 

The shinobi student flew through the air, just narrowly avoiding the formation of the outer field. He threw three shurikens at Ylva, eyes wide with recognition. He might not know exactly what she was planning, but it was clear she was up to something. The shuriken, however, smacked into the inner field, the one around Ylva, and slowed to a snail's pace. Meanwhile, the multi-armed found himself caught in the outer field, moving at about the same speed as the shuriken. Farrin couldn't easily form a field on someone directly unless they were willing, but the temporal powers cared for distinctions. If that someone ran into a temporal field, that was on them. 

With his targets of opportunity limited to one, the ninja darted toward Farrin. He lobbed another shuriken, then threw three kicks the time-turner's way. He was fast. Incredibly fast, but not Farrin fast. Farrin dodged the shuriken. One kick snapped into his side, forcing a curse from the Irishman's mouth. A raised guard deflected the second and third kick. 

A flash of movement. Crack, crack, crack. Farrin landed two left jabs, followed by an uppercut, which sent the ninja soaring toward the arena's edge. He twisted, a shadow in the wind, and landed on his feet, then lunged forward. 

Thirty. 

Both fields collapsed, and Farrin leaped back behind Ylva. Glacial winds and glinting snow-covered enwrapped their surroundings. Ice specked the air around them, and a wash of arctic white obscured just about all else. The ninja, the bowmen, and the others approaching from the above ring; all of them were frozen. 

Farrin shivered, each arm warming the other. "Yeah, I'd say that works," he chattered. He walked over and snatched up the flags. "Yuh' good ta' go?" He would offer a few moments later. When Ylva was able to do so, Farrin would lead the way back to their "base." Time for the W.

With everyone converging on their location, Ylva had to do something she hated. She had to leave her own safety up to someone else. If Farrin had shown to be even a little bit incompetent, she wouldn't have agreed to this method, but they both wanted the same thing - a complete victory. Fighting off every team, with most of them being comparable to the duo, just meant that they risked losing a flag in the process, as Ylva honestly didn't think they could lose.[break][break]

This tactic was nothing more than insurance.[break][break]



It did risk exposing some of her abilities, which she wasn't exactly too happy to do, but if it meant putting her on the map with a blowout, then it was worth it. Once she had fully imbued the area with her energy and frozen everything possible she would exhale deeply. If she moved too quickly she risked them thawing out "A complete victory. Lets go." she would motion for Farrin to follow once he got the flags all they needed to do was bring it home.[break][break]

othing held back. It was complete and utter domination unshackled by the weight of regulation or inhibition. Okay, well, not entirely. Farrin could have hit a little harder and used stronger acceleration fields with his cannons, and Ylva probably could have done even more damage with that final move, but they would have to withhold their strength in the field as well. The lethal option was a last resort in the realm of heroism. "All life is precious," his mother used to say. 

So, perhaps it was more apt to say they hadn't withheld within a range of apprehension. The result? The complete victory both of the students had sought. Farrin would more than make up for the mediocre score he received in the balloon challenge, courtesy of Rahul. 

Farrin beamed ahead with the three flagpoles in hand, scouting for any last-second surprises. He would wait for Ylva to catch up, then repeat, keeping within sight lines in case he needed to back her up. It proved unnecessary. The return trip was uneventful. They sidestepped a few traps and returned to their starting location, the base, without any further conflict. The flags were captured, and the challenge came to an end.
