| [attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Another day of Jun neglecting her health and her timetable all at the same time. The last of her academic classes for the day finished up, which meant it was early afternoon. She had been up since four this morning, and not once had she taken a moment to eat anything. At least, not outside a small bag of chips. As such Jun was practically wavering as she stood in line at the cafeteria. It was a rare instance of her being seen in the school uniform outside of class and the dorms, and already the tray she had piled up was threatening to stain the shirt, something that Jun couldn't exactly afford to let happen; her talents were detective work and painting figurines, not getting stains out of shirts. After some careful maneuvers she plopped her tray down and took a seat, not bothering to see who was around. She had a bit of a reputation, and as such many enterprising students resented her. What made things even worse was she even offered help to others. Jun wasn't concerned, though. In this moment she just needed to up her blood sugar before she passed out, and this mountain of mashed potatoes was going to do just the trick! With no hesitation she began to dig right in. Star Sentinel was still trying hard to get used to this absolutely horrid environment she found herself in. Hell, she was still internally referring to herself as her codename, and not the fictional name she was SUPPOSED to be presenting as her one true name. Beyond that, however, sharing living spaces, eating spaces, even lavatories with these people, it was already growing tiring to the girl. It reminded her far too much of the lab space. And there was certainly a reason she had been insisting on such solitary places since she managed to get any sort of power in her relationship. She was going to be trying her damnedest to avoid any scenario that reminded her of that place.
And yet here she was. Fraternizing. With these... well certainly some of them could eventually be called heroes. Most, by Sentinel's estimation, would never really deserve a term like that. They were weaklings, whose quirks were no better than the flimsy needles the scientists needlessly bent trying to pierce her skin. Still though, her assignment was to "make friends" and "be a normal college student". It didn't make any sense to her, but some marketing genius way below her non-existent pay-grade had certainly run the numbers and decided that her making friends at this Japanese hero school would benefit their missions back in the state.
Okay Columbia, you're meant to make good impressions and make friends. Who here looks like they could use a friend? she would meander around the cafeteria as she thought, analyzing the room until her eyes fell onto a Red-head. Not only sat alone, some people seemingly making active effort to avoid sitting next to her. Lonely? That had to be the case, Columbia couldn't imagine sitting all alone like that and not feeling lonely, being trapped with your thoughts.
So it was a no brainer for the girl to plop herself down right across from Jun, a well-practiced smile plastering itself across her face. "HELLO!" Columbia would suddenly burst out before remembering she was speaking English, "I am sorry. Forgot I am no longer in the United States, it is nice to meet you. I am new, and was looking for someone who might... "show me the ropes", Does that phrase translate?"

| [attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Jun was too busy savoring those first few bites of food to notice Columbia. If anything, the presence of food only made her stomach growl more and provide ample distraction for the blonde to get in close. Needless to say, Jun wasn't prepared for anyone sneaking up and talking to her, let alone belting out a greeting. She partially jumped out of her seat, losing her balance and falling in the floor. Thankfully, she saved her fork. "Uh, hi?" She scrambled back to her seat, clearing her throat as the girl sat in front of her and giving her a moment to let her adrenaline simmer down. "Translate...uh, yeah, I think I follow." She did not follow. In the short time this girl has been here Jun has at most figured out she was from the US (which meant Japanese was a second language), a brand new student, and that she was loud. She needed to figure out a little bit more before making any kind of decision, though...who was she kidding, she was gonna help if she could. "Um. So when you say that, do...did you not go through the orientation...? They normally do a tour of the campus when they do that. Did they not do that with you for some reason? I can show you around and all that if you need me to...uh..." She took another mouthful of potatoes, staring half-blankly at the girl. "Who are you again...?" Star Sentinel |

That same plastered smile never really seemed to leave Columbia's face. The closest the girl ever got to wearing a mask. "I was given the official tour. However as anyone from Tennessee would tell you," the girl continued, "a guided tour of the Smokey Mountains is far different than living there." Columbia proudly beamed her idiom as if it had any meaning to someone who, in all likelihood, didn't know what Tennessee or the Smokey Mountains were. And so Sentinel tilted her head to the side before clarifying.
"I know where to find the bathrooms and the dorms, but I want to know more about what it means to be a student here. Not just in UA but here in Japan. This place is way different than any high school I've ever attended." That claim mostly went without saying, as Columbia had never attended an actual high school. But other people didn't need to know she was THAT different. Not yet at least. One day she would reveal who she really was, when it could be used as leverage, to make those who had done it to her bleed.
It took a few moments for Columbia to realize she had stopped talking, and stopped smiling as well. Letting her thoughts rile her up to much, she quickly fixed her expression. "You seemed like a helpful person. And I need to meet new people before I go mad. So far away from all my friends and family (a.k.a. no one), from anyone who's heard of me before."

| [attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... "What's Tennessee? And why are the mountains smoky?" Like many others, Jun was not familiar with Appalachia; her thoughts when she heard 'America' were always California, Hawai'i, Texas, and New York City. Picking up the juice box, she listened to Columbia, picking up on the little whisper of having no one and processed. She was, for all intents and purposes, looking for someone to shadow. Which...well, there were worse than Jun. She was never above helping out new students, and had in fact helped others acclimate. "I see...well, in that case I'd be happy to help!" Unlike Columbia, though, the smile Jun gave back was sincere. Natural. She seemed to be buying the girl's façade like it wasn't even there. "I'm Junsuina Kanjo, a third year from the Hero's Department. Though most people just call me 'Jun'." She slurped some of the juice up, thinking of where to even start. "What it means to be a student here. Well, there's...a lot I can show and go into detail of, but uh. Might be better to break things down and take them into smaller chunks. If I might go into some of my own philosophy, we're here to learn how to be servants of the state." She set the box down, shoveling a few more mouthfuls of potato in as she thought how to better explain. "See, heroes...they're first responders. So like firefighters, or police, or medics...there are plenty of classes here to help diversify our area of expertise, but that is the crux of what a hero is. Which is something that unfortunately many of my peers have lost sight of." Gen and Ylva came to mind, but Jun wasn't going to vocalize them. Better to shield the newbie from them as long as possible. "We defend the weak, uphold the law, and serve the people of Japan." Star Sentinel |

"Oh, they're technically misty, but the Cherokees used to call it the place of blue smoke because of all the mist up there. So Smoky Mountains." Columbia did have quite a knowledge of national parks. The All-American was taught about All (of) America. Was it a comprehensive education all around? Absolutely not. But it did make her very knowledgeable in a few hyper-specific areas that most people could care less about. But, she would try to keep her non-sequitur at least a little short, other matters to attend to and all. "My name is Star Sen-- Columbia Washington. Code Name: Star Sentinel. Lady Liberty in the flesh."
It took considerable effort on Columbia's part not to strike the pose as she said her name. But it didn't seem like the time.
"I get all of the hero stuff, I was doing some basic hero stuff in the US before I was invited to attend here at UA. I do like your take on it though." Columbia's laughter would hopefully come off as the light hearted banter she had intended. She appreciated the perspective, even if, in the back of her mind, she thought of it as idealistic. She didn't wanna verbalize thoughts like that though. Servants of the State though, it was certainly an idea she could understand. Though, in many ways far differently than Jun did.
"I mean, my whole gimmick is repping the country, so I get the public servant vibe. I've saved a cat or two from a tree."

| [attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... That statement came off a bit too rehearsed. Jun would know, she had taken the time to rehearse a few things here and there. She'd take another bite of potatoes, trying to determine where best to go from there. "Cat saving...? That feels a bit cliche. Basic hero stuff...did you gather intel on cartels on the Texas border?" Jun wasn't well versed in geopolitics, but she knew for years the US had problems with gangs and drug runners along its southern border. If that were the case... "Well...I guess that wouldn't make a lot of sense either. Those kinds of operations would be dangerous. Uh...did you work in a PR department? That intro sounded rehearsed. Wait-" Jun stopped, getting serious for a moment. She looked right at Columbia, almost through her, looking at something hidden, something personal: "You suffer from anxiety issues too, don't you?" It made sense. The girl seemed genuine enough, but something was just off enough. Just barely. Maybe it would be more coverable overseas, considering Americans loved to put on a show for one another, but here? Plain as day. "I get that, I do...you don't have to force it! Just be yourself!" Jun would again give Columbia a genuine smile, though a little of her own nervousness shone through. Star Sentinel |
