Half empty or full... Sometimes to feel better you had to find a way to lift your spirits. It'd taken a while but Khepri had finally gotten a lead on a spirit to try and lift. They weren't quite sure yet how it'd help but they trusted Gotoh-sensei's judgement so here they were.
"The fog is getting thick let's hold hands so we don't lose each other."
Gotoh-sensei had also said that they didn't need to do that alone so they brought someone along and for some reason the first person that came to mind was Yoko. It was probably because she was good at seeing things Khepri themself didn't notice. They couldn't think of why else she'd come to mind first. Their head tilted slightly at that thought. For some reason they felt like there was more to it but they couldn't quite place it. Oh well, maybe the fox spirit knew. Spirits knew all kinds of interesting things. This one time back in Egypt they'd asked a spirit how to stop crime and the spirit had gone right through a wall. The time after that they'd tried his advice out and putting the criminal through a wall really did help stop crime.
Taking a few more steps forward Khepri nearly fell over a root, only their catlike reflexes and the fact that the root was thin enough to snap almost instantly saving them from an embarrassing fall. When they looked down they found the reason for the root. They were no longer on the path. Apparently the mist had made them stray off the path, their walking must have gradually shifted until it was-
"-no longer straight. Yoko I think we stopped going straight. Look, the path is gone."
...Is all perspective

''R-Right.'' She felt her heart pound a little faster as her and Khepri held hands, and in that moment she became self-conscious about the fact that her own hands were cold. Would Khepri mind? Oh god no she was going to hate holding hands and they were never going to hold hands again. She needed to savor this moment while she could. Looking for a fox spirit wasn't exactly how she saw her first date with Khepri taking place but here they were stumbling through the mist to look for a ghost, or a fox? A fox ghost? Wait, was this even a date in the first place? Wasn't that a bit presumptuous of her? ''-Woah!'' She got a little spooked when they almost fell over the root, but thankfully Khepri's reflexes saved them. ''That was a close one. Hey, Khepri, have you ever actually seen a fox spirit? I was just thinking... How are we supposed to know what it looks like, or even catch it in the first place? Won't a spirit be incorporeal? And if we try to take a picture for proof I doubt it'd show up at all in this weather.'' She waved her free hand in front of her face as if she was trying to casually swat the fog away to no avail. ''Huh? Straight? I'm not-'' She cleared her throat. ''I mean, now that you mention it, there wouldn't be something like tree roots on the path.'' She gave the root they almost fell over a casual kick. ''Okay, let's stay calm and retrace our steps... We can't have gotten far, right?''Mafdet Khepri

"No, I've seen other spirits though," Khepri responded confidently albeit maybe a bit too quick. They actually had seen a fox spirit before back when they were wandering the rooftops of Tokyo. It had almost ran right into them, long white hair reflecting the moonlight, before pointing finger guns at them and telling them that they hadn't seen her and to tell no one. There weren't many things Khepri was entirely sure of but the facts that keeping promises was important and that disobeying spirits was a bad idea were two of them. "It might be, I don't know where it is. Where's corporeal?" They asked, entirely serious.
"Yeah that's what I was thinking too. Not unless we'd been spirited away to a mirror world where people hadn't walked over the path enough to trample all of those flat." Taking a look around Khepri realized they couldn't be entirely sure that they hadn't been. The suddenly thick fog made it very hard to see whether they were still where they were before. Pulling out their phone they checked their digital map to check before putting it back away.
"No, we haven't gone as far as I was hoping."
That was something they needed to fix. While it was possible that the fox spirit would show itself here it was much more likely to do so once they got deeper into the forest. They were on the right track though. Khepri had done their research and getting lost in the woods was definitely the first step to running into a spirit. The mist was very promising too.
"Hmm, are you listening Yoko?" Khepri asked while squeezing her hand to catch her attention. She seemed distracted for some reason. "Yoko? Is there something behind me?"

Yoko gave Khepri a nervous side eye when they said they had seen other spirits before. This was probably just a classic Khepri joke, but she chose to take it at face value. ''Isn't that like a big deal? Are you sure they were spirits?'' Somehow, it felt like they had just dropped a major lore bomb on them, Khepri had seen spirits and possibly interacted with them? If they had any proof of that, that could be a ticket to a big cash reward in its own right. When they then asked her where corporeal was Yoko just gave her a deadpan stare back before slowly lifting her hand and gently poking Khepri's cheek. ''You.'' She said, then pointed back at her own face. ''Me. We're corporeal. You know, solid, not made of the same stuff as this mist. Spirits and ghosts they pass through walls, right? That's because they incorporeal.''She found herself squeezing Khepri's hand a little harder for security, but not so hard it would hurt them. ''You know, your overactive imagination can come up with some really scary scenarios. Let's assume we haven't been spirited away, we just took a wrong turn and we'll find our way back in a few minutes.'' She blinked her eyes and squinted as she tried to see through the fog, but to no avail. Her quirk had nothing to do with enhancing her awareness or anything like that, so she stood little chance in conditions like this. ''How-'' She felt a small blush coming on as her heart beat a little faster after what Khepri said next. Hopefully the darkness and the fog would hide at least the blush from sight. ''How far were you hoping to go?'' Obviously they weren't thinking about the same thing, but all Yoko could picture was them hugging each other for warmth, maybe even kissing Khepri and it was driving her crazy. Their lives could be in actual danger out here and she was too busy crushing on this stupid cute dumbass. ''Well,'' she cleared her throat and adjusted her hoodie. ''In any case, I'll follow your lead.''Her mind began to wander once more as they went further into the forest. Maybe she could invite Khepri over to hang out at her place again. Find a way to confess her feelings, but in a chill kind of way, not coming across as too desperate. She should find out what their favorite movies are and watch it with them. No, not just watching movies, she wanted to know more about Khepri in general. What did they like? What did they not like? What does a typical week for Khepri look like and will she be able to get them into smoking cigarettes. One thing led to another and suddenly she imagined coming home to an apartment in Tokyo, Khepri waiting there for her already. They would make and have dinner together before dozing off on the couch to whatever was on TV. Then the next morning they would both go to work as usual, toughing it out in a shit world, but at least they had each other. ''Hm? What?'' She looked up at Khepri confused, then she glanced down at their hand as it squeezed hers. Oh no, had they been saying something important? ''You think there is? Step aside, I'll beat it up for you.'' She huffed, rolling her sleeves up as she got ready to transform and punch a fox spirit in the face if she had to. However, as her eyes met whatever it was that had been coming up behind Khepri, she froze in place. Mafdet Khepri

Khepri tilted their head and let out a thoughtful hum in response to Yoko's question. "I don't know, I didn't see her long enough to be sure." They hadn't been able to take a picture either and memory was a finnicky thing so it was hard to analyze the past after the fact. It was perfectly possible that what they had seen hadn't been a spirit but something else instead like a ghost or a cosplayer.
"Us?" Khepri asked while rubbing their cheek. "The spirit has been inside of us all along?!" They can pass through walls because they were inside of them? That made sense. Khepri had heard something about your heart being with multiple people before, they'd just never followed that train of thought further. Furrowing their eyebrows they leaned down and forward to stare intently at the place where Yoko's heart would be, hoping to catch a glimpse if the fox spirit poked its head out even briefly. They weren't surprised that it would choose to live there. Yoko was soft and warm. Khepri too liked being in places that were soft, warm, comfy and cozy.
"I'm jealous." The catbug said before raising their head again when Yoko squeezed their hand a bit harder in return. "Okay, let's assume that." That sounded much more wholesome than the alternative. Well, sometimes being spirited away wasn't bad, Khepri had heard that the fae threw some very fun parties, but usually it ended very poorly for the victims. They weren't going to risk Yoko's safety like that. If they wanted to attend a fae party they could always come back some other time.
Hmm, how far they wanted to go? Well, however far it took to find the fox spirit they supposed. It was hard to put a measurement on it since they didn't know the distance. Maybe they should explain in different ways then. A journey had a beginning and an ending so the furthest point would be them finding the fox spirit here and that was what Khepri wanted.
"All the way." They confidently replied with a nod and a bright smile. Khepri had the distinct feeling that when they were together they could do anything. Looking at the facts so far it checked out. They had yet to fail at even a single thing they'd tried. Hmm, maybe it was Yoko that always succeeded though regardless of who they cooperated with. Khepri by themself had failed plenty of times. They might even accidentally be putting more pressure on Yoko. That was a thought they very much didn't like. So much so that the tingling in their belly turned into a very uncomfortable rumbling instead. Tilting their head they made sure to check how Yoko felt about it. "Are you okay with going there with me?"
Not much later Khepri too froze in place as they looked behind their companion. "Uh... Yoko..." They spoke up while pointing over her shoulder. "There's Bs behind you." Two of them. Large enough that their shoulders came up as high as Yoko's head and with a maw full of teeth. The only thing these Bears missed that normal ones had were the ears. Khepri wasn't sure whether that was better or worse. "Is there something behind me too?" Khepri gulped.

''So she could totally just have been a person.'' She was silently relieved it wasn't actual concrete spirit evidence and just another Khepriism at play. When they came to the conclusion the fox spirit might be inside either of them she couldn't help but look a bit dumbfounded. ''...No, probably not. I don't know about you, but I think I'd know if some spirit was inside my body.'' She shrugged. Blinking her eyes at Khepri when they suddenly leaned down and looked at her chest, almost like they were inspecting it for clues... Or something else. ''U-Um...'' She felt her whole face get warm as red flushed her cheeks. Oh no, Khepri was finally taking note of how flat she was! Maybe Khepri found that unattractive about her, maybe they were going to stop talking to her now! It wasn't her fault she wasn't born with perfect model genes, she couldn't do anything about that anyway! Just as her inner anxiety spiked, Khepri's comment about being 'jealous' just left her standing there, staring back blankly at the catbug. J-Jealous? Of what??? Just in case, when Khepri was busy leading them further into the forest, she zipped up her hoodie a bit more with her free hand. She could always use the excuse she was feeling cold or whatever, and totally not self-conscious about her own appearance. ''I like that too.'' That 'all the way' response had made the heart Khepri was previously looking at jump a little bit. ''I mean, committing and all that. Not quitting halfway.'' She totally saved it, hiding the fact that she was just thinking about spending time with Khepri again. "Are you okay with going there with me?"Khepri, I'd follow you into Hell just to spend one more minute with you. ''Yeah, I'm fine.'' She played it cool, having wanted to be more honest, but also not wanting to come on too strong. ''Are you getting scared?'' She instead reversed the question on Khepri to check on how they were doing. That's when things started to go sideways. She stepped up and was ready to beat the shit out of whoever or whatever was behind Khepri. What she didn't expect to see was the silhouette of a person standing down by the tree line not too far away. ''Hebiru?'' She muttered, squinting to try and see through the fog. Until Khepri called attention to something else. ''Bees? At this time of night, are you sure?'' She flinched when she turned and saw bears. ''I thought you said bees! Those are BEARS, Khepri!'' She exclaimed, getting ready to activate her quirk so she could scare them away. However, just as she readied herself, she felt something wet drip onto the top of her head, then down her shoulder and onto her arm. Of course! It was just her rain cloud, after all, she was in a very heightened emotional state right now... But why did the water look like blood? She slowly turned her gaze upwards, discovering to her horror, the disembodied head of Bakuretsu floating over her, blood leaking from her mouth, her lips curling into a twisted grin when she made eye contact with Yoko. ''That sister a’ yours? Cunt’s got an illegal lab. Some real messed up shit in there''She felt weak, paralyzed with fear as her whole body trembled. ''Khepri, run.. We need to run.''Mafdet Khepri

"If she wanted to be," Khepri nodded in agreement. Spirits could be whatever or whoever they pleased. "Hmm, I think you're right I can't see one either." Not that Khepri had ever thought Yoko was wrong of course.
"That's good," Khepri agreed. "Quitting halfway means you find something else. That can be good but I think we're going to find what we want like this." Commitment was important and Khepri was ready for it. Even if they themself didn't entirely realize it.
"No, you're here too," Khepri said absent-mindedly while looking around at the fog, unaware of their own innocent honesty. How could they be afraid while Yoko was here? Their chest tightened for a moment as the face of another blonde appeared in the fog for the blink of an eye, there and gone again before the catbug could even tell who it was. Probably just a mirage.
Hmm, Hebiru? What would the school nurse be doing he-
"Bears without ears!" Khepri shouted back over their shoulder as they cast a glance back at the school nurse. It was but a moment. Just a second. A turn there and a turn back. When they faced Yoko once more blood was streaming down her head. They heard themself speak more than they felt themself speak, their sense of self compartmentalized and replaced entirely with a need for action.
"Not again." Not Yoko.
The catbug was pushing her away from the scene before their thoughts caught up, their own form between Yoko and the threat while they followed after her, eyes wide in a predatory stare and mouth half open displaying their teeth as a threat to anything that might approach.
They were no longer Mafdet Khepri. What they were now was 'Sphinx', or perhaps what Sphinx could become. An engine with a single-minded purpose, to save and protect without any care for their own safety. A weapon to destroy all that stood in the way of the protection of those they cared about. One locked into an eternal moment of the worst day of their life, one full of regret that was broken in ways they had yet to realize and would take years to recover if ever. Bear, villain, evil sister or whatever may come. Sphinx wouldn't let a single thing get near the person their true self had yet to realize they loved.

''Is that what you were looking for?'' She shuddered. ''Now I'm glad you didn't see anything.'' She felt like such an idiot for misconstruing that whole situation just now. Of course Khepri didn't care about how flat or not flat she was! Sometimes she felt like all she knew how to do was overthink every little situation, and blurt out hurtful things that pushed people away, even those she cared about. It wasn't like she didn't know she was being hurtful either, she just never had the impulse control to keep her stupid mouth shut. Khepri took her right back out of her negative thoughts as they reassured her that they weren't scared, because she was here with them. Yoko couldn't help but smirk in response, feeling ten times tougher and braver than she was before Khepri said that. Fox ghosts? Retsu? Cryptids? She would fist fight anyone and everyone to keep Khepri safe. ''A-Aren't those still bears?'' She wasn't sure what to do, fight, run? What were they even up against? Before she could make a decision she felt something shove her away from the scene. ''H-Hey!'' She called out, but looking over her shoulder she realized that it was Khepri. She wasn't exactly resisting their pushing, especially not when she saw their expression. Somehow, for some reason, it reminded her of the first time her and Khepri trained together. She felt cold, scared, like she was getting a peek behind the curtain and catching a glimpse of something she wasn't supposed to. ''Khepri...'' Fear was replaced with concern as she looked behind them. Whatever they had met wasn't following them, but Khepri kept pushing her. ''Khepri.'' She tried again, a little louder this time but still concerned for her friend. Finally, she wrapped her arms around Khepri and pulled them into a close hug. ''Khepri! It's okay... They're not following us.''Mafdet Khepri

”Yes,” Sphinx heard themself respond. Different types of ears could all belong to the same species. They themself had no ears on the side of their head eithe- Oh, was that what Yoko meant? Had she seen the bears’ ears somewhere else? Even as their mind ran through such a train of thought their body moved, slower and with less precision than it should have, not to mention without the link between mind and body that could have let them make use of that realization, but in the right direction nonetheless.
“Khepri…”
A word pierced through the haze. It was one they knew but the meaning didn't matter right now. What mattered was making sure Yoko got out of here safely. Everything el- ”Khepri.” Was it important after all? As roving eyes tried to pierce the fog Sphinx blinked, the disconnect between train of thought and course of action shrinking while the word began to filter through their perception.
When arms wrapped around them they tensed and nearly lashed out before they recognised the feeling. It wasn't difficult. Only two people had ever done this to them. Almost immediately Khepri's breathing steadied.
“Okay,” they echoed while protectively wrapping their arms around Yoko as well, their eyes scanning the treeline around them all the while. “No. Not yet. You'll get back safely, I promise.” Reluctantly one arm separated from Yoko as they began to walk, ready to block or strike whatever may come at them. They didn't see anything in the fog but that was what made caution all the more important. People weren't scared of being alone in scary places, they were scared that they weren't alone in scary places.
“We'll get back safely together.” Khepri softly spoke again, almost like a mantra meant as much for themself as for Yoko. Their other hand found Yoko's hand once more and grasped it tightly. They weren't planning to let go. Not until they got back. Not until they were safe. Maybe never.
