Retsu wasn’t sure how to reply to Aika Ao’s words. The whole message was foreign to her and so was the unsettling feeling that came with it. As the tokens began to float in front of her she settled upon a nod and a hum, making no eye contact as her gaze was upon the horizon, eyes glossing over. For one rare minute, a minute she’d been keeping an eye out for this entire time in case it'd be the one where Aika Ao pulled off whatever he was planning, Retsu lowered her guard without her even realizing it as she lost herself deep in thought. A place where they could have fun. Was that what was different about her then? Here she was able to have fun just like others did? She didn’t like the thought of what that said about her. If that felt this different, this off compared to what she was used to, what could that mean? The thought weighed heavy on her. As if she were withdrawing her hand from a fire before it could get burned she turned her train of thought towards the three trials she'd completed. The first trial she was no stranger to. When it came down to it the only person she could count on was herself. It had always been that way and would always be that way. Several familiar faces flashed through her mind, lingering for just a second before she pushed them away. With a shake of her head she refocused on what mattered. Making sure she caught on to whichever way Aika Ao was about to try to screw them over. Her caution was only halfhearted, the majority of her attention still lingering on the past. That she'd breezed through the second trial was no surprise either. Retsu had never let anyone else’s opinion decide her actions. She always blazed her own trail forward in whichever way would get her the best result, their judgement be damned. Good enough? No. She was better. Better than what all of them thought of her and soon enough she’d show them. She'd show them all. A snort left her at the thought of the third trial. Trust others? What a riot. She didn’t trust anyone here further than she could throw them. The only thing you could trust in was that everyone was gonna be a self-serving sack of shit. It was exactly why she'd made all of those threats. Either they did what would benefit her because it would benefit them too or they’d do it because the only alternative they could get was a bullet through the head. Nothing more, nothing less. Growing up in the lawless backstreets of Tokyo she’d seen exactly what happened to fools who trusted without being able to verify. Hells. She’d buried several herself. Retsu didn’t need their help. She’d be fine by herself no matter what the world might throw her way. They’d all see that in time. Even so Aika Ao’s smarmy speech agitated something deep inside her chest. If she didn’t know better she’d almost believe he was genuine. For some reason she was even having a hard time convincing herself he wasn’t. That couldn’t be right. Something felt wrong. Retsu did not know what it was and she’d been ignoring it this whole time but the closer she got to leaving the more she felt it. There was almost a reluctance to leave this place, ridiculous as the thought was. Retsu's fists clenched. That had to be related to his quirk. She couldn't imagine -refused to imagine- that it could come from herself. There was no way that was true. Absolutely no way. Their bodies and powers had been changed so he likely had a way to affect their minds too. The thought angered her so much another plume of fire left her eye and ignited her hair while she reached for her weapons. A snap ended her efforts before they could begin. She awoke the same way she'd just fallen asleep. Her eyelids snapped open and she shot upright startling every waking person around her. With adrenaline coursing through her veins she took in the scene in an instant. Somehow the chaos combined with the fact that she wasn't wearing her eyepatch and had longer hair had caused her to go unrecognized amongst the mass of unconscious civilians. She couldn't count on that lasting for long. Ignoring the surprised exclamations and caretakers swarming to one of the few people that had woken up by themselves since the Unity Festival had ended she grabbed her stuff and left, her burning hair flaring up in warning to any who'd dare interrupt her. Half-formed thoughts and ideas she didn't even want to consider risked burning a hole through her head long before the quirk she somehow still possessed even outside of the Dream could. She pushed them away with action. There was much to do and she had no idea how long she'd been out. Time worked differently in dreams, for all she knew she could've laid here for hours, days or even weeks. It didn't matter. So long as she kept moving she didn't have to focus on thinking. So, as always, Retsu kept going without looking back. There was no other option. Not for her.

"Suit y'rself." Retsu shrugged. It was no skin off her back regardless of whether he won or lost. She hummed and nodded along as he kept speaking, slowly walking closer as she did. Not that they had to speak quietly of course. Even if anyone heard no one would dare interrupt the two of them. Down here in Shinjuku there was no way someone hanging out in an arcade at this time wouldn't know of at least one of them and more importantly their reputations. Still, she'd rather not have him go for his gun again. Leaning against the claw machine next to the one he was using she crossed her arms and began to explain. "Ever heard of the Hayashida-gumi?" She asked, continuing regardless of whether he had or not. "Old Yakuza family that never figured out dey were goin' outta style. Somehow dey've been hanging on till now. Ah rekken it's tahm ta correct that." Concluding her short explanation she followed him outside, pulling out her combustible knife and offering it as a lighter for his cigarette, a brief activation more than enough to light it should he choose to make use of it. "So, 'ere's the gist. Ah need ta 'ave a talk with their kumicho. He's got some intel ah need. Dun' need any a' the others alive," she continued after a brief break. "Ya up fer a job lahk that?"

Retsu had been disarmed in far worse ways. Still, it was kind of annoying that she'd have to go look for her gun after she was done getting rid of this annoyance. Little did the little shit know he'd played right into her hand. Ranged quirks were a pain to deal with if they managed to keep their distance, especially when you didn't know their full capabilities. By getting rid of her gun he'd forced her hand. She clenched it into a fist. He'd regret that. "Oh no ya fookin' don't!"Leaping from the car she was standing on to the one he'd just ducked behind Retsu rushed after the wannabe do-gooder before he and her meat shield could get the range advantage. Best to keep a deterrent like that around until she knew he didn't have one of those bullshit quirks that could be used to blast someone with the full heat of the sun. Without losing momentum she angled herself to leap off the hood before the spaghetti gloves he was wearing forced her to abort her charge. Slapping the first hit aside she tanked the second one on her shoulder. It was an impact she'd definitely be feeling tomorrow. Her teeth grit against the pain as she curled her lips into an open mouthed manic grin, raising one arm to block his next strike while rearing her other arm back for a counter aimed straight at his jaw. "Hah! No light ken escape a black hole, dumbass. Lost y'r discounted metaphor manual along with y'r survival instincts, fookin' quirker piece a' shit?"

Ever since Dream World Retsu’s priorities had changed. A fire burned within her. Whereas before it was like a wildfire reducing all in its vicinity to ash it was now more condensed. Focused towards a single direction. A single goal. Retsu exhaled deeply, the air passing through her lips like the whistle of a train coming to rest, ready to take on a new arrival before moving to its next stop. She sat atop a simple workbench facing the door of the nondescript warehouse she’d rented anonymously after receiving a call on one of her burner phones. Having looked into exactly who made a request of her Retsu was prepared for anything. This would either be a trap or a very fruitful meeting. Quite frankly Retsu wasn’t sure which of the two she’d prefer. A manic grin twisted her face. They were free to come try her. She’d show them just like she showed the rest. With a groan she cracked her neck and leaned back on one arm, pushing bullet casings to the side to put her hand down. Tools, ammo and weapons lay scattered atop several different workbenches throughout the warehouse. She’d only informed her new client of the location a few hours ago but she’d been working here throughout the night, making sure she had everything she needed to keep herself on her feet come hell or high water. The majority of her armaments were hidden away both on her person and throughout the room but the fact remained. Retsu was loaded for bear. Her gaze returned to the door and she schooled her expression when the customer finally arrived. “Yo, Yoko was it? Come in and close the door behind ya.”

She felt sorry for her? Retsu snorted. It was a curt and brush snort, one of amusement mixed with familiarity. Recall wasn't the first to tell her something like that. Retsu had met many arrogant know-it-alls that thought they were better than her just because they were a bit older or a bit stronger. One by one they'd fallen. To feel sorry for someone was to think yourself above them, capable of reaching a hand down and solving every problem they failed at. Retsu wouldn't accept being above her. As their cart came to a stop and the restraints opened up Retsu looked back over her shoulder to reply. "Y'r words reek a' self-satisfaction, Recall. Dere ain't a purpose ta them but tryna force y'r own views on others. Hypocrite. Nothing but arrogance to 'em. You tryna convince me or you tryna convince y'rself? Really, y'r far more emotional than that fookin' prim and proper facade a' yours tries ta convince the world of."Retsu wasn't gonna pay Iphigenia's speech any mind. There was nothing she had to escape and the words of some two-bit hero wouldn't convince her otherwise. Without another word she disappeared amidst the others exiting the roller coaster, just one more face in the crowd.

"Huh, that's convenient," Retsu replied to Noa in between bites. She pointedly refrained from bringing up the idea that there might be side effects. So long as it helped them here she didn't quite care what'd happen to the girl after the fact. Retsu's brow furrowed as she ate. Something about Noa felt familiar to her. Had they met before? Gulping down another bite she shook her head and put the thought aside. It was likely just the sight of the audience from before messing with her head. There were more important things to focus on. Like this chocolate cake. Retsu wasn't quite a sweets person, more of a bitter one, but this dessert was much better than she could have hoped. Far too often chocolate cake was thick and cloying, one ingredient overpowering the others, but this one had far more nuance to it than what she was used to. It had some of the familiar bitterness of quality chocolate, a richness that added to it instead of overwhelming the core ingredient's characteristics and just a tinge of sweetness induced into it through an addition she was unfamiliar with that made it greater than the whole. From the token in her pocket a goose honked mockingly, as if drawing a comparison to something. Retsu shut it out and kept going. Even as she did she knew her efforts wouldn't be enough. Digestion took more than a few minutes to happen and after the third time she threw out a cataclysmic explosion Retsu began to realize that while the strain certainly made her crave sustenance it did nothing to speed up the process of assimilating those needs. Yet somehow her efforts had been enough and resulted in her reaching the desired results without her even noticing. As she accepted the token given to her by the whims of The Ringmaster without her ever reaching the goal she'd been aiming for she took another bite and swallowed the piece whole. It left a bitter taste in her mouth. There was lethargy in her features as she stood up once more and moved on, a sound coming from her pocket that was like a honk mixed with a laugh, one she once more pointedly ignored. Paranoia made Aika Ao's words sound incredibly ominous. In her mind simply being let out seemed unlikely and his words appeared to carry a double meaning. Nothing came free in life and she'd had to fight for every scrap she had. Retsu let out a sigh somewhere between an exhale and a sigh, the slightest bit of hope desperate to stay above water amidst an ocean of skepticism. Even if this were some kind of Dream World could it truly be different?

"Yo," Retsu casually greeted Yoshiee as she made her way through the arcade towards him. Nodding her head at the claw machine she continued. "That thing's rigged bah the way. Tomomori makes a killin' off it. There's a washer in the cap ta loosen the grip 'nd it's programmed ta only 'ave a stong grip once every twenty six tries."
The exact number differed based on the prizes put in at the time but Retsu wasn't planning to rant about that all day, nor did she have any reason to undercut Tomomori's profit. The man was absolutely lousy at cards so she tended to get a cut of it anyway. "Forevermore, roite?" Retsu asked out of courtesy. She'd known who he was before she even walked in here. After all, arcades weren't exactly her prime hangout spot. She'd come here on purpose and with a very specific reason. "You on the job roite now?"

"Whateva 'elps ya sleep at noite," Retsu muttered back in response to Iphigenia's first reply. She'd always found the lack of self awareness those self-righteous pricks had startling. All they did was the same violence they decried, except they didn't risk reaping the consequences. Retsu would be more than happy to dish out their share. She let out a snort at Recall's comment on her past. "Ah thought heroes weren't s'possed ta gloat?" Retsu fired back with a snort at Recall's comment on her past. For all that they made fun of monologues the hero types sure did love to go on rants about why you were wrong and they were justified in putting you down. It was like their own subconscious was letting them know how full of shit they were while they desperately tried to assuage it. "But thanks fer the sympathy. How're your colleagues doing? Wait, didn't one a' 'em get put in jail recently? D'ya bust 'im out yet?" She added with a jeer that made it obvious exactly how much she knew about Gabriel's situation. Having met the flirty egotistical prick in person she'd put a lot of effort into finding out everything she could use against him. It was always useful to have stuff like that in your back pocket for when it became relevant. Case in point, right now. "And what the fook do you kn-" Retsu spat back just as they descended, the rest of the response lost amidst the howling wind and the screeching of iron wheels over steel rails. Her hand tightened around the restraints with a white-knuckled grip, clenched not in fear but in anger. The moment they were done being taken for a loop by this roller coaster she was gonna take Recall for a loop alright. Once the world stopped being upside down Retsu turned to face Iphigenia once more. "Lots a' fookin' words ya used there ta distract from the fact that ya 'ad no answer to mah question. Dun' worry, ah get it. Fooks like you are much better at rantin' 'bout others than actually fixin' anythin'. Ah take mah concern back. Ya must be havin' a blast in this lil make believe world where ya ken do no wrong."

"Funny 'ow it's always the enforcers sayin' that, ey?" Retsu replied with an edge to her tone. Already she didn't like this woman. Who the fook did she think she was pretending she knew everything there was to know about her just because she had some kind of fancy quirk? This was why she hated those hero types. Always thinking that what was in their head was the truth and nothing but the truth; That they had everything all figured out. She'd let them figure out the ashes once she was done with their precious little system. Retsu's eye narrowed when Iphi turned to face her. Now she was resorting to threats, huh? Still. Some of those addresses were under ENKI. She'd need to send an update out that they were compromised. Retsu wouldn't let her thoughts show on her face, pushing down her discomfort to reply with a cocky smile as the roller coaster began to move. "Impressive, y’all have gotten good at always being one step behind.”She tapped her fingers on the guardrail while they ascended before continuing just as they began to drop. "Well, a blind man coulda' seen that bah now."It didn't take a genius to tell what she was talking about. Operation Babel ran rampant all over Tokyo for twenty four hours with barely anyone of importance getting captured during it. When the law finally got a win elsewhere by dragging The Elementalist to court it resulted in the city being turned upside down once more. Villainy was gaining momentum and hero society was failing to keep up. The amount of resources and people they had to divert to the bay to handle whatever the weird shit going on there was -Retsu only narrowly refrained from shuddering- had left several places more vulnerable than they usually were. "Rekken y'll have better luck with whatever fookery gets thrown y'r way next?"

Much like Retsu herself when she crashed into the traffic light in front of her, slamming into the horizontal beam with such force her legs stretched out in front of her while her bike kept going without her. With the breath forced out of her lungs all she could do was hold on while the serpent kept moving, eventually passing her by entirely. Stuck hanging there with aching ribs and bruised pride but one thought ran through her head. How the hells was she supposed to get down from there?

A thunderous crash resounded behind them completely blotting out Freja's words. Retsu slammed into the ground hard. Her fingernails tore into the sand as she struggled to get up, the very shaking of the earth causing her efforts to fail. With her eye wide she cast a look behind her. A stretch of the beach a dozen meters across was completely gone. By itself her gaze was drawn further and further down the furrow carved into the beach all the way from the ocean. The beast's head, so massive it felt unreal, vanished beneath the waves once more, its hunger sated for now. So Retsu presumed at least, for who could truly know the motivations of such a being? The sudden silence was deafening. Adrenaline still coursed through her veins, her own heartbeat thumping in her ears as she lay there, mind still catching up to the fact that it was over. The chase, the brush with death, the inexplicable horror from within the sea. From one moment to the next chaos had faded to the mundane scene she'd gotten used to over the years. Gritting her teeth to stop them from clattering Retsu pushed herself up, clenching her shaking hands into fists as she did. She'd survived. That was all that mattered.

Gods did that man love to hear himself talk. If she didn't have a valid excuse to kill him it might've been enough to piss her off. As it was the yapping was simply another drop in the bucket. What, did he think she was going to believe his flirting? That he actually had an interest in her? What a joke. Besides, even if she did 'John' wasn't her type. He was more the type that got himself killed by mouthing off to the wrong person. Case in point. "Don't pick foites ya kent win, dumbass!" Retsu shouted right before taking a stun round to the chest. It hit her with enough force to send her barreling back into the crowd while shocks ran through her causing her to drop her pistol. As she fell back one of her arms spasmed and with gritted teeth she forced her muscles to obey, redirecting the spasm to send her arm swinging out. Her elbow hooked around one of the fleeing civilians throats. "Come with me if ya want ta live." She hissed at him, the threat of what would happen if her tried to wrench her arm loose clear. Unless Lone Wolf was the best shot this side of the Mississippi -which, given that they were in Japan, was a fair distance away- it was highly unlikely he could get a clear shot on her like this until she got out. Not unless he was willing to risk harming civilians and from what she'd seen thus far that didn't seem to be the case. Which likely meant he was either a hero or a vigilante, not a hired assassin. That was something. A little silver lining to keep her spirits up as she was dragged out of the bar like a stubborn sack of potatoes by her hostage. Ramming her bike key home and turning it the moment she made it outside she forced herself to work through the aftershocks, swinging her leg over the seat and squeezing the throttle to get moving. The moment she did Retsu heard a rattle that was both unfamiliar and very familiar. Unfamiliar in the context of a functional engine. Familiar in different ways. She threw herself to the ground before her eye could even begin to widen, kicking off the side of the bike to get out of the radius of whatever her bike had been rigged with. There would be hell to pay for this.
