Tears would well up in the girl's eyes, shaking her head. "No! I think something's broken!" This was an exaggeration as she was capable of moving the foot on the same leg, and even gain some locomotion. The problem was, like everyone else, she was green. They all thought this was going to be a cake walk, but unfortunately for many it was anything but. It also didn't help that several students were overconfident, either coming from a prominent family or had faith their quirks were going to keep them safe. It would be at this point that the more foolhardy would begin to run into the first set of traps: landmines. Well, not actual landmines, Mark would get in trouble for that. But he had managed to remove portions of the road to hide a small explosive with a quick-acting and decaying knockout formula for any that stepped on the plate. Another three students would go down to these, along with a fourth to another shot. Two other students, though, would manage to get behind cover behind a nearby storefront near Michael. Seeing as he not only cared about his fellow classmates, but also seemed to know what he was doing, figured throwing their lot in with him was the best bet. Seeing him rip a car door off, one of them melded his hands into the ground and ripped up a piece of concrete, making another shield. "I got your back!" he called out, moving up with Michael as the party of four, albeit slowly, began to work their way up. "Found a cluster of three on the south side. Scattered them, but making sure I didn't leave anyone buried." "I know you're holding back, Kanjo," Mark says, looking at how the class was finally getting the picture. "Leave 'em be, any serious injuries we'll fish 'em out later. Besides, I got coverage there. One of them fell into one of my pit traps, and another fell back to find another way around. Last one snuck around you and is heading towards the bakery." He looked through his scope, frowning. Balloon boy was using a piece of a car as a makeshift shield. It wasn't bad, but unfortunately that was made of sheet metal and couldn't hold up to the caliber Mark was firing. Normally; because of the different material the worst he'd be able to do was make a dent in the door. It's the first day, don't go for the legs. Just leave a shot and hound him for it later. He pulled the trigger, the round flying and leaving a nice dent just under the window. Nearly a third of the class was out of action already, and more were to come; he had to change focus. Samaritan

Once everyone was on the starting line, they would find a strange absence of their teacher; those who might be more perceptive would have noticed that the hero would have wandered into No Man's Land without a word, rifle slung over his shoulder. Granted, he didn't think anyone would catch on that he was, in fact, the bad guy of this story. "Alright, Moody, showtime is upon us," he says into his radio, kicking back up on his perch. Looking up at his map, he'd see multiple students prepared at the start right next to the briefing area, but also some others spreading out to other points. Either way, he was losing faith in them. Sure, they'd get far, but the briefing area was in plain view of his vantage point. All he had to do was stick his head out and start taking shots. "You set the charges on the bridge, yeah?" "You didn't tell me to set any charges!" a voice bit back, clearly annoyed. "And which bridge? There's three of them for whatever reason!" "Oh, I must've done that this time around," he says, angling up his shot on some wolverine looking kid. "Focus your efforts on the north and south flanks. I think we're going to have a lemming train on our hands. Will be a hard lesson for the class..."
The grounds which the students were gathered were not in the best of conditions. Sure, it wasn't completely bombed out, but there was considerable damage. And once the buzzard sounded, the entire class of 30 surged forward, towards death and destruction. In the first thirty seconds two people would immediately go down, causing many students on the main road to scatter and squabble over cover. A third crack in the distance, and some poor girl would get nailed in the legs; she wasn't eliminated from the exercise, but based on the welt that was beginning to form on her leg it was clear that in a normal situation she would be in danger of bleeding out. In the distance a skirmish could be heard taking place; who knew what was happening over there? Samaritan

Mark crossed his arms, frowning as Shion set himself up and tried to be friendly. The gun that Shion had was pretty dirty, but Mark wasn't going to beat Shion over the head about it, yet; he just got done using it, so it more than likely got that way throughout the exercise. What was infuriating was his ho-humming regarding if the Carry was loaded or not, even going so far to bring his broom-alien to life in order to determine that. Which was a valid way to do so in some cases, but not the point he was driving at. "Don't overcomplicate it," he says, reaching over to Toto, taking hold of it, and tossing it in a nebulous direction off to the side. "If you don't know if it's loaded, then you need to operate on the assumption that it is. Because if you start playing around with it without checking, bad things can and will happen." He didn't know what Shion had been taught, but now he had to figure out if he knew anything about ballistics or not. "I flip this table over, think it'd make good cover?" Shion Utsui

"This is your first time, so I'll be gentle." Situational Awareness 101. Prior to the American Lone Wolf taking charge of the class, it was a relatively simple course with lectures three times a week with practicals twice a week. In the two years since taking it over, many of the upperclassmen have started referring to it as Do or Washout 101. An entire portion of Ground Beta, taken over by the hero, was commonly referred to as 'No Man's Land' due to the number of traps, pitfalls, and even live ordinance that was scattered throughout the sector. "Situation is as follows. A gang has taken control of this part of the city, fully intent to stay and make it a base of operations. What they didn't anticipate was the sudden crackdown by the Association to prevent this. Unfortunately, their mastermind, a quirkless nobody, was quicker with his traps than anticipated. Not to mention there's another villain lurking among the streets picking off anyone that decides to get too close to their center of operations."
He finishes loading a clip of brightly colored rounds, some kind of wood or rubber, and set it on the table everyone was gathered around, next to the intimidating looking rifle to the side. "The center is here," he says, indicating a five story building with a car manufacturer logo on it. "The Association is going for mass numbers on this hoping to overwhelm the defenses, or at the very least keep the two remaining villains busy long enough for an opening. The entire zone is filled with traps, so don't blindly rush in. You also want to keep an eye out for the other villain; she's a construct user, so there's no telling what she can do." He hefts up the gun, loading in the clip. "You all have thirty minutes to prepare. Be listening out for the signal to charge."Samaritan

Mark stared at the kid, clearly annoyed. Was this seriously the best this auxiliary course could produce? "They got you running this simulation and you don't even know all four rules? It's a wonder you haven't lost a toe." He shakes his head, looking around and pointing at the expended magazine. "Secure that, you're going to need it. I want to see you at the start in five." He left a lot of questions open, but based on silhouette Shion might be able to recognize Lone Wolf; he was an American teacher that focused on tracking and situational awareness. Unbelievable. Mark didn't like getting mad, but considering it wasn't in his job description to teach gun safety and usage and this was the result of what the college could do? Once Shion was at the starting position he's point to the pistol he had, frowning. "Keep that pointed downrange, unless you can prove to me it's unloaded. And don't flag me with it. Set it down here." He'd waited until Shion set the pistol down, and reaching into his jacket would pull the Carry from its holster and setting it on his end of the table. "Is this thing loaded? Don't touch it. Can you tell me, just by looking at this, that this pistol is loaded?"Shion Utsui

Lone Wolf was surprised that UA added an auxiliary gun instruction course. They were so insistent that guns were for police, and that heroes shouldn't need something like that, blah blah blah he didn't care. Well, he did but he also didn't. Guns weren't toys, as he explained to Marlene. They were tools of destruction with the sole purpose of spitting death out of the business end. So when he was asked to observe and give his thoughts on the simulation in Ground Gamma, he couldn't help but be unimpressed. It was something that went against everything he ever learned, trained for, and practiced. The fact that UA was complicit in this frustrated him, especially since this could cause even stricter gun control to fall on heroes within Japan. He normally wouldn't care because he'd be on the road in the middle of Kansas or something, but he was here. In Japan. Operating. As the simulation ended, he stepped forward with his hands in his jacket pockets, looking up at the student on the factory floor. "Hey, you!" He hated putting on a tough demeanor, pretending like he cared. But it was necessary at times. "What are the four rules of safely handling that piece ya got there?"Shion Utsui

Mark thought a moment. There was a lot he wanted to say. Deep, philosophical stuff that might actually help young people do better. Obviously not better than him because he was perfect, but that was besides the point. But then again, he wasn't a scholar, was he? It was a mask he wore, but instead of something serious it was more like a jester's hat. It suited him; only made him even more assuming to the student body, the public, and more importantly, the underworld. "Kids should stop pretending," he says, shrugging. "If this were a game or movie, announcing your presence, striking a heroic pose, and naming all your moves would be really cool. But the sad reality of it? It just looks corny." He scoffed a little, holding his hands up. "Maximum Overload, Shinigami's Gaze, Yamato's Revenge! I'm sorry, but kids these days don't know how to name things properly. It's goofy. If they're gonna put a name on something, it's gotta be simple! Like...'Joe'. What the hell does that mean? It would throw people off, giving the heroes that edge they need. If you just robbed a bank, ran down an alley, and heard somewhere above you, 'Shapoopi!', would you or would you not stop and try to process what that was? It'd make me stop in my tracks. I dunno, but if I hear one more 'Deathbeam' in one of my classes, I'm gonna have to take drastic steps: having a surprise lecture where no one can get out as they are forced to watch an old 2000s sitcom that isn't even funny."Morgana Moriarty

Mark leaned over to look at her notes, a bit curious as, after reading over some of them, found that some of his snark had made it in. He couldn't help but snicker a little, shaking his head as he pointed to the last little bit as he felt the need to expound upon that. "No, that's referring to the vices. For the most part, most of the work I do can be done by one person. Anyone can do that." He leans against the workbench, tilting his head. "Do you write down a lot of notes like this? When learning new things, or taking on a case, or something along those lines?" Tabitha Yamamura

In terms of the upper floor, no other civilians would be there. On the lower, however, would be a small café area with chairs and tables and a counter with what was supposed to be pastries (but in this case were facsimiles, to Lone Wolf's dismay). In this area there would be one dummy closer to the street window, two more in a chair near the back, and a final dummy knocked back on the other side of the counter. The temperature would slowly be rising, but at the very least on the lower level things wouldn't be as smokey. Kupo

As sad of a fact that was, Mark had uncovered some of the ugliest things the human race had to offer. He knew worse existed out there, but he wasn't keen on finding it. Or worse, it finding him. Granted, it didn't help that his father was just as, if not more, crazy than him. Marines were like that though. Their admission of where they came from made sense to some of their earlier statements, too. It wasn't surprising, but made things click into place. "If I had to keep count, I'd probably get shacked up in the wacko basket. I've got more important things to do than count threads in the pads on a wall. It's bad enough I have to audit all my ammo daily." He paused mid chew, thinking. "Or am I crazy because I have to count my ammo daily..." He shrugged, appearing to be unbothered by this as he looked up at them. "You have to be a little crazy to deal with the deviant, anyways. The 'bad guys' have different motivations, similar to the 'good guys'. Some kids just want fame and fortune, some just wanna contribute to society. Likewise, not every thief is thieving for a big payout. Some crooks wind up on the wrong side of the law because of circumstance. But then there's those that do sick things for the fun of it. Those are the ones that normal people can't understand. And in this quirky world of ours, they may or may not have incredible abilities."Morgana Moriarty

"I'm assuming you're from the States too, based on your accent," he says, taking a sip of water. "We both know how things go over there. Most of the power is in the hands of the states, and each one writes their own criteria for their police and other first responders. There are of course national guidelines, but obviously its easy for people studying in one state to get their license easy compared to the next."He holds his chopsticks up, clacking the points together. "You're right. Lotta stupid kids go to take the exam. Most manage to get it. At least, was the case with me. Barely graduated high school, and I found myself more knowledgeable than some of the proctors." He shrugged a little, picking up another piece of food. "I don't try to cull numbers for some noble cause. There is a second of Ground Beta that is lovingly referred to as, 'No Man's Land' because I've set it up closer to a war zone. Whenever people see heroes on the news, on the side of cereal boxes, their faces plastered on ads, you know they're fake. Manufactured. When the rubber meets the road, they're the first ones to burn out 'cause they've never had to hold in someone else's guts." He went quiet for a moment, washing down another chunk of meat with water. "Kids don't understand what real heroism is. The ones that do either get out of the business immediately, or are the ones put in the pinewood box. And anyone crazy enough to stay lose a few screws in exchange for knowledge and experience."Morgana Moriarty

There was an awful lot that Mark could say about that, but chose not to. They were, for all intents and purposes, right. He could have lived a life of a simple man, working with his hands and away from all this law business. Unfortunately for him, life didn't work out that way. Which lead to his next answer. "I'm lukewarm on being a teacher. Pays the bills, and gets me access to resources I otherwise wouldn't have. Unfortunately, I have to run exercises on a daily bases and run three...is it three? Lectures a semester. At the very least, the number of academic people on campus are at a minimum, so anything that doesn't have to do with how not to be seen or the Five Ds of Projectile warfare I can point other people to." He struggled a little, taking another bite out of the cutlet he had. "'Sides, my classes have a reputation. In the roughly two years I've taught, I've been the cause for two students to get off of this path. Dozens more've dropped the class citing I'm too rough. Not my fault everyone can't problem solve their way through a minefield."Morgana Moriarty

Without any kind of hesitation Mark would begin to dig in, munching away as the first question was tossed his way. It was, for lack of a better term, a strange one. Reasonable, but one he never thought of, especially considering the task he chose to undergo. "Never," he says, a cheek slightly puffed out with food in it but not so much that the contents would spill everywhere. "I have a specific set of skills that can't be applied to other fields, unless I get into the business of making specialty ammo or restoring classic cars. Except Bintos, those things are the second fugliest vehicle I've seen on the face of this planet. Second only to that stupid looking electric truck that was marketed in the 20s."He swallowed what he had, reaching for the glass. "I'm close to the end though, huh? Guess it's a good thing that I don't have kids. I think." Morgana Moriarty

The round grazed Elijah, but the fact he melted into the ground gave Mark pause. Huh. I don't know what I did, but I managed to motivate a student past their boundaries. I think. Jury's out for deliberation, but for now...where did he go?Mark began to move laterally, slowly, eyes scanning the ground to try and get a read where Elijah might have gone. Initial consensus was there were no tells that he could use, so now it came to Elijah's own skill: could he see Mark? Did he have to guess? How proficient was he at incorporating all this into his fighting style? It wouldn't be long before Mark got his answer. With Elijah appearing almost right next to him, he was half a second too late to react before feeling the blow against his side. It wasn't enough to incapacitate, but instinct enough kicked in. He raised his weapon to smack him with the butt of his pistol, but stopped partway through. "Alright. Little sloppier than I imagined, but I'll chalk it up to lack of practice. How'd that work?" Elijah

He leaned back, thinking a moment. "Some fried pork, with whatever side available. I ain't picky about what." He decided not to go on about the whole working with other people thing. While he preferred to take jobs on by himself, he wasn't above working with another hero or an agency if the need arose. Which he was going to have to do sooner or later, since his brother was still loose and he was no closer to finding him than he was since he arrived...but that was an issue for another time. Regardless, he didn't really care about the views of other people or the public as a whole, unless it was a major screwup. In which case...yeah, some worry was warranted. Once Morgana had returned he'd shift to better face them, waiting on them before reaching for his utensils. "So what's first on your list?" Morgana Moriarty
