Mark didn't care that other students were around to hear his inner monologue. Said inner monologue were typically thoughts like, It's called a firetruck, but it carries water...why? or Hannibal clearly had the opportunity to march on Rome after Cannae. Why didn't he? The Romans clearly stated they weren't going to surrender, so why not force their hand personally? Neither which made any sense to anyone. Which is why, whenever something pissed him off he made no effort to hide the fact he was pissed off. "The only check that's being made is the one your mouth is currently writing," Mark says, slipping his hands in his pockets. "If you wanted a count of all the equipment I'm using, all you had to do is ask. I have no problems handin' over a list of stuff that is currently being used in an effort to ensure an accurate audit. But blatantly appropriating it all, especially when we're in the middle of overhauling a section of No Man's Land due to safety issues is negligent. Oh great, she was in his head now. Again. Shit, he needed to shift the conversation before he got hung up on that. "Cool, huh?" The man appraised Iphi for a moment, pressing his lips together. He'd had a pencil mustache and was missing one of his top teeth. "So she knows what you've been doin'?""Ah, yeah," Mark responds, giving a nervous grin. "She knows all about my obsession with antique and rare guns," he says, glancing her way. Could she read his thoughts? There was no way that was her quirk...but he knew she built stuff. Science stuff. Scary. But if it was data she was looking to collect, then he could just as easily explain a little more about their "relationship". "It's how we met, actually. Gunshow in south Cali. She's more of an FN fan, though. Hon, this is Sinbad, met 'bout a month ago. He's a gun broker here." Gun broker was a misnomer. Anyone that was a broker meeting in a shady bar like this at night on business had other ties other than legal business. He nodded, looking back at Mark. "Weird, but I'm not one to judge. You were looking for a Skorpion, right? Think I found in my stock what you're looking for." Reaching into his jacket, the man pulled out what was clearly a gun and set it on the table between them, barrel facing the wall. Mark let out a low whistle, reaching out to tentatively touch the folded stock; this wasn't out of nervousness, but as a means to try and preserve whatever prints might be on it. "Damn. Full auto, like you promised?" "Tested it myself, works like a charm," he responds, looking like the cat that ate the mouse. "Found it in an old stash of mine, will make a good few bucks in the near future. Got some other stuff in there, if the two of you wanna take a look." He looked at Iphi, smiling. This was a great point in time where he wished he had a stick of dynamite he could just chuck into the water, not only would he be heralded but so many people could use the seafood in so many dishes. He drew The Carry from its holster, not bothering to check what was in the chamber; he knew that it was the electro rounds. He hoped that whatever sprang forth would be affected by them. "So if I understand this correctly, if you kill more monsters than me, I get a free meal. Is that what I'm hearing?" He had a funny way of translating other people's thoughts. On the flip side, if she was trying to make someone jealous then was it really a good idea to accept any public outing with her? "Only if it's hibachi." He reached out to make an effort to get her paper, again not aggressively or overtly out of worry of drawing attention to the corner they were in. Boy, the amount of stalling Mark had to do in order to maintain the status quo was annoying. Most people looked at his little project, the small kingdom he had carved out for himself, and then some academic had to come in and try and ruin it all. Hasani was attempting to reacquire all the equipment Mark needed to create and maintain traps in No Man's Land, and while an audit did make sense he didn't understand why they all had to be relocated back to the labs. The labs had bukus of calipers, scales, and vices, why couldn't he just be asked how much stuff he had out there? This was one of the reasons why he preferred working alone and outside established organizations. There were rules, regulations, and mountains of red tape that he could not handle nor tolerate. He spent years honing himself and learning how to best handle situations so he could operate with the best of the best, and he wasn't going to let some shmuck with a could of pieces of sheepskin tell him what he could and could not do. And so he marched on down to Hasani's office, opened up the door and gave him a hard look. One might think Mark's first reaction to seeing Hasani would be one of disdain, or question the man's audacity, or even a few "gamer words" crossing his mind. In reality, and what Mark said aloud, was, "We didn't have a support head?" There were many things he tried to stay in the know of, but he was more concerned about enlisting support students over talking with the support department head. He was not one in favor of red tape. He would be momentarily distracted as Hebiru presented the brisket to him, surprise evident on his face as he immediately pulled a few burgers off to make room, setting them in a separate pan from the ribs. "We'll see how it turns out. Long as there's some kind of rub on it, should be fine." Brisket was something that had to be seasoned just right, but seeing as someone else brought it he couldn't say no to throwing it on the grill. So long as it was cooked thoroughly, it should be decent. "I'll pass on the shots. Dunno what kinda hard liquor you have, but this ain't an occasion for 'em," he says, his Japanese catching a little too much of his Midwestern drawl. Deciding to let things simmer, he set his utensils aside so Mai could use them before picking up both pans, moving over to the table. "Ribs and burgers are ready, for those that want any." He set them down, stepping back before dusting his hands off. He wouldn't bother get in on the injury talk, especially since...well, he was guilty of sending multiple students to the infirmary. That and he had nothing to contribute. He was also not going to touch May's prodding regarding the situation with Iphi. He already had an uphill battle to get back in her good graces, especially since she was possibly the best person to help him with his mission. Of course, there was also this new guy. "Mr. Serna, I appreciate the sentiment, but No Man's Land is a little pet project of mine. Apart from the occasional rebuilding of certain parts and the resetting and rearming of various traps it doesn't need a whole lot of refinement." He offered a smile before heading to a nearby cooler, opening the top and pulling out a bottle. That wasn't to say that his peers wouldn't be able to contribute, but there was something about this guy that rubbed Mark the wrong way. Probably because he was an academic. There were few things in this world that irked Mark more than the promise of apple pie and failing to deliver. It took him a good five minutes after Morgana had left campus to realize that they didn't deliver, and boy was he irritated. There was no sense to make a move, not yet. He had work to do, and there was no sense in chasing them down until he had an opening. In the meantime, he could do a little investigating on his own. In the time he took to do his digging, the article came out, and well...it wasn't what he expected. It was weird, seeing this side of him in black and white, especially compared to the brief mentions he got back home, but that was neither here nor there. After a while, he decided to just call her investigation agency and ask where she might be found. He of course got the run around, but after explaining who he was he seemed to get what he wanted. And after being told where she was that particular day, he did get a warning that they were on the job. To him that was perfectly fine; a stakeout was just a way to observe and document suspicious circumstances, people, businesses, and the like. He would be harassing them, but based on the location he was content to be able to get what he wanted without much issue. The stakeout was taking place in a café, a well to do one at that. He didn't know the details of Morgana's quarry, but it ultimately didn't matter to him. And once he spotted them, he made his way over and sat across from them, interlocking his fingers. Mark had many titles, and one of many he ended up leaving behind in the States was "Ladykiller". In the two and a half years he had been in Japan, he brought with him an exotic appeal. Unfortunately, despite the local women meeting his tastes, he seemed to lack a lot of luck in the hookup scene. Most of it Mark chalked up to cultural differences, which if he was being honest suited him just fine. He wasn't here to lay pipe, or even teach for that matter. He had a job to do, and any fun he managed to have on the side was icing on the cake. Penny, as attractive as she was, did not appeal to Mark in any meaningful way. Was he going to flirt with her? Absolutely. But it was less out of a desire to see her with less on, and more of a way to entertain himself. The patrol so far was going without a hitch. The smell of rotting fish was something he could do without, but based on their route it couldn't be helped. He would be chewing on a toothpick when the question was posed, and he offered a shrug in response. "Anything for you, beautiful," he says, his eyes everywhere but looking at her. Mark paused, looking over all the meats he had up on his grill. "I couldn't find any brisket, and there's none up here. I can always throw on another rack of ribs." He did sound a little disappointed, though. It was bad enough he couldn't get a proper pork butt, but brisket on top of it? Hamburgers, hot dogs, and ribs were the best he could do. "I'll consider multiple objectives. I've been trying to spice things up with volunteer students, so stretching them out thinner might do the trick. Only downside to that is I can only focus on so much space." He nods to Sadako, letting out a wistful sigh. "Kids are getting better, though. Especially the higher years. Though a few I'm gonna have to beat over the head and ensure they know that I'm using practice rounds, 'cause the real deal can and will chew through a car door or a layer of brick." While there was a layer of frustration, he was proud that the students were beginning to figure out all his tricks. And with this he'd follow up on the shitlist comment: "Look, it's not my fault she's gorgeous and is classy on top of it. All I'll say is she made it very clear where the boundaries lie, and I ain't gonna cross that line again." And that was all he was gonna say. He was very paranoid about people knowing what his quirk did, and the less that knew the better. That said, he'd circle back to geography while making space for Mai to start her work. "Big as dogs. Mark looked over at Penny for the first time during this function, and...well, yeah, she was pretty attractive. However, every vibe she gave off told him to run as far and as fast away in the other direction. Almost reminded him of the Timber wolf ugly women his father used to tell him about. "Actually, does make me think, I hear cat piss is a pretty good beer substitute and I hear you can get it for free. But only certain high-class bars in the States have that," he says as he leans towards Mai. "Also, do you need a breather? Every time I look up you're running from one place to another. We could trade places. You get to entertain..." he held a hand out to Penny, obvious that he didn't know her name. Mark turned, raising an eyebrow at Iphi before smiling. "Evenin'!" He picked up his drink and stand up, indicating a booth a little further near the back. "Let's have a bit more privacy. That outta do." Surface wise, this was the same Mark Browning that worked for UAU, the sly and charming Midwestern hero that everyone hated for one reason or another. Despite the number of times the two of them had interacted were few, Iphi would note there was something different about him: there was a sharpness present that he never showed. It was subtle, but present. Once they were at the booth he'd situate himself with his back to the wall, an eye on the door and an eye on Iphi. If they were in any other situation said eye might wander, but between being on thin ice and knowing that things could kick off at any moment it was better to keep things professional. "First of all, I'd like to apologize for my conduct during the test," he says, holding his bottle up. "Namely, the things I said. I don't like using my quirk on other people, and seeing as it was a low-stress environment I figured I'd have a little fun. Except I forgot the fact that outside my office everyone holds a higher standard of professionalism."He had started to bring the bottle up for a drink, only to pause partway. The contact in question had just walked in the door, and he didn't need super hearing to know that he was looking for Mark. Shit.He set the bottle down, giving Iphi his full attention as he starts to get up. "Secondly, I wish I had more time to fill you in. For now, play along, I don't doubt you'll be able to piece things together." At the very least, things were lining up. Since the incident at the test room, Mark had done a brief sweep of Iphi's notes via his quirk and found this guy to be a suspected arms dealer. Only problem was, there was no proof. Until tonight, that is. Mark had potentially brokered a deal, and there was plenty that could be tagged onto this guy. He was just one piece of the puzzle, though; on top of letting him incriminate himself, it was possible they might be able to stymie a few operations tonight. Mark reached out and gave the man a hearty handshake as he approached, giving a wide smile. "Good to see you again, John!" He says, glancing down to give Iphi a wary look. "Who's this?" Mark gave the man a quizzical look, only to realize something. "Right, sorry. This is my girlfriend, Clymie. Don't worry, she's cool." Truthfully, Mark blanked for a moment. Mark wasn't quite in hog heaven, but he was definitely content with the kind of food available to him. So much so that no rich hussy was going to get under his skin. He heard her voice, but decided to play aloof and pretend she wasn't there. It wasn't quite a defense mechanism, but it did keep him out of trouble more often than not. But thankfully, he had a savior in the form of Mai! She was everything he could ever want in a woman: good looks, competent, ambitious. The only thing holding him back was her stature, and he learned early on to not poke fun at her for it. And now that she was here, she might help him mitigate the amount of Karen-ing this...hero? She had to be a hero, right? She didn't look the part. Damn, was his method getting around? Anyways, Mai could help him diffuse the situation before the Karen got going. "Yes, Mai, unfortunately there is a problem...my date and I were just discussing how you don't have an open bar. The food? Phenomenal, you've outdone yourself, but it would go really well with a beer." It was subtle, but Mai would have been around him enough to pick up the joke. This was as much for Mai's benefit as for the situation as a whole; she looked a little stressed, and a tad bit of levity was necessary to lighten the mood. "Much as I like the Yak-nu, doesn't seem to do it for me," he says, completely butchering the word. He even recognizes this, but decides to carry on; he wasn't a native speaker, and while his Japanese was passible he wasn't going to be able to catch all his mistakes. Though after a moment he points at the things she brought, looking a little apologetic. "Might need your help with the veggies then, all I know how to with 'em is either steam or nuke, and the last lady I cooked for didn't like either method of mine." It was an amusing memory of his, though painfully true. He didn't see a problem with his methods, but that was because he was used to cooking for himself. Though with the talk of visiting different places of the US, Mark couldn't help but scrunch his nose. "Ain't the rats bigger than dogs there? And that they live in the subways?" This might be strange coming from someone who lived in the US, but it was a big place. All Mark's haunts were farther west. "If you want my recommendation, you should stop by San Antonio. Or Colorado Springs. Or anywhere in the heartlands, really. Both coasts are cramped and crowded." The new nurse got him to turn his head, and the offer of sangria got an eyebrow. "Might have to pass on that. I got beer, but didn't want to get everyone shitfaced. I'm already on Iphi's shitlist, I don't need to give her an excuse to present a case for me to be fired." While teaching was just a stop, he would rather try and keep the job. He pulled out a pan and pulled a rack of ribs off, setting his utensils aside so he could put it on a table. "I need more elaborate traps. Word's getting around how to defeat the ones in No Man's Land. I'll give props to the kids for both sharing intel and doing research, but my scenarios aren't meant to be beat.
