The Doctor is In For a brief moment Shokuhou Shirei got her hopes up. Then they all came tumbling down.
"What do you-"
She stopped herself to refrain from interrupting the student counselor, her breaths coming just a bit quicker and her eyelids trembling.
"B- bu-"
The more Sadako said the more agitated Shirei seemed to get, fingers clamped around her skirt like it was her lifeline with one hand while her other was clutched to her chest. When Sadako finished and turned to face Hebiru the student tried to find her voice again.
"Y- you can't-" Shirei replied before swallowing, her throat suddenly very dry. "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!"
Her folding chair clattered to the ground as she snapped upright. Anger, dismay and a dozen other emotions warred for dominance on her face.
"If we stop it'll all be for nothing! Outside of my scope as an intern? We're supposed to be heroes! How could I ever be a hero if I refuse to help someone that needs help right now because I don't have a degree yet? I'm not the one that needs help right now, Airi is! If we stop now it'll all be for nothing! Neither of you can help in the way I can! She's so close to being able to use her quirk without succumbing to it. She can already almost do it with my help and if she can do it with she can learn how to do it without. We're nearly there, we just need more ti-"
"Shirei." Hebiru cut in with a bit of bite to her tone.
"Y- Yanai-sensei?" Shirei gasped out in reply, her eyes widening as she froze in place.
Hebiru closed her eyes. She took a deep breath and pretended to take a moment to collect herself before opening them once more. The moment Shirei looked into her eyes she felt as if a gavel had just dropped.
"Shokuhou Shirei. Unfortunately it appears we will need to temporarily terminate your internship. As a professional entrusted with the safety and wellbeing of all UAU students I cannot permit such a breach of trust, protocol and medical ethics to continue." Hebiru said coldly before softening her tone. "However, with respect to your past accomplishments, good intentions and exemplary work ethic I am willing to reconsider this termination at a later date. That is, of course, if you agree to attend Gotoh-sensei's sessions. While I will not force you to I heavily advise you to do so. Please, Shirei. Do not throw away your entire future over one lapse in judgement."
For a moment Shirei simply stood stunned in place before she collapsed, her legs giving out under her as she dropped to her knees and stared up at the two teachers through tear-filled eyes.
“But… but Airi… If we don’t, if we, she’ll relapse. I… I have to-”
Hebiru turned towards Sadako with a meaningful look, an unspoken request to help Shirei in her stead. She knew her words were a bitter pill to swallow and that right now no matter what else she said the girl would not accept it.
Leaving the pair to it she wondered if she made the right choice. Perhaps Shirei was right. Maybe usage of her quirk was the only way to help Airi reach her true potential. In the end she supposed it didn't matter. It wasn't a risk she, no, it wasn't a risk they could take. It chafed at her to let ethics and regulations get in the way of progress but there was no other option. Perhaps if she worked together with Shirei they could raise Airi to new heights. Or perhaps they failed and Airi would never recover from the attempted treatment. She didn't find the latter all that likely, if she was to be honest. It left a sour taste in her mouth even through her muted emotions.
For a brief moment she wondered what choice she would have made had her colleague not been present. Would she have been tempted to use this as a research opportunity? Perhaps, yet she would not succumb to such temptation either way. On the other hand would she have tried to take the lead in Shirei's method of treatment, tried to ensure it could be done safely and gone through with it regardless of protocol should her assistant have confided in her privately?
She didn't know.
She didn't know and it chafed at her.

The Doctor is InHebiru weathered the waitress's act with only the slighest bit of second hand embarrassment. It was quite clear that the young employee had no idea how to behave in Sonya's presence. She couldn't help but wonder what exactly had been on the paper the CEO had handed her earlier. Perhaps she was overthinking matters, after all, Sonya is practically a celebrity in her own right. It only makes sense the young woman would be a bit nervous.
"Fu fu... I can understand that. Life is certainly busy when you're trying to make a change."
Taking a bite of her omurice she briefly savored the taste, muted as it was, before refocusing on the conversation. Eggs had always agreed with her no matter how they were prepared.
"Hmm, if I had to pick..." Hebiru took a moment to think, her finger tapping her lip as she did. "Perhaps R&B? Jazz now and then?"
She did tend to listen to those two genres whenever she tried to relax. Those times were few and far in between however. When she was working her way through a crunch, something that happened much more often, she tended to use nightcore versions of death metal instead to keep her thoughts in line. As much as she didn't think Sonya would judge however Hebiru wasn't quite interested in sharing that little factoid.
Even so the decision to bring up those two genres wasn't solely because she liked them, no, it was mostly because they tended to be soft enough to allow listeners to hold a conversation during it. For while she wasn't against relaxing per se her research still took priority. She was sure Sonya would prefer not to talk about work during their outing so she'd have to dance around the subject and perhaps stick with tangibly related questions but she was confident she could still make some progress.
There was no way she could feel comfortable simply enjoying herself after all. It would grate the entire time she'd try, no, she had to work towards something to keep herself occupied throughout it. Still, so long as she kept things light she was sure it'd be fine.
Questions like who was in her team, what they were like and whether she could get to know them before the start of the project were innocent enough after all. She wasn't entirely sure whether it was Sonya or herself she was trying to fool but she supposed it mattered little in the end. The result would be the same.
"What about you, Sonya? Which genres do you like?"

The Doctor is InToday had been a fairly calm day so far at UAU's infirmary allowing the resident nurse to finally work through some of her backlog. Something that was long overdue. Despite the amount of overtime she'd been working recently her many obligations had left her with little time to rest or take care of herself. Something she could normally handle but sleep had not been coming easy to her these past few days.
Nightmares kept waking her before she could get so much as two hours of sleep and she had far too much to do to justify trying to increase the hours allotted to getting a proper night's rest. So much like anything she didn't have the time to solve right now she'd written the issue down and put her full focus on clearing her queue so as to be able to devote her attention to finding a solution.
With her assistant temporarily being away from their duties Hebiru found herself with more forms and paperwork than she had gotten used to. Having competent help was useful until one found their skills to have degraded as a result and as Yanai Hebiru transcribed another requisition form to replace recently depleted supplies she noticed her work did not flow nearly as smoothly as it had before.
Downing her fifth cup of coffee for the day she was just making her way to the coffee machine for another when the infirmary's door slid open and a harried looking student stepped in.
"My, Yorunemuri-san, it's good to see you. To what do I owe the pleasure?" Hebiru greeted her kindly, observant eyes taking in the girl's appearance all the while. "Would you like some coffee? Tea? Water?"
Hebiru asked as much out of politeness as to gauge her reaction. She had the feeling it would tell her a lot about why Ayumi came here.

The Doctor is In"I assure you, I find my research most satisfying." Hebiru countered with a nod, not entirely disagreeing with Sonya's words but not feeling like outright accepting them either. "Though I suppose variety is the spice of life."
Gods knew she needed a lot of spice to properly taste anything. Perhaps it might not be too bad of an idea to apply that approach to the rest of her life as well. Then again, what is short term fun compared to being able to fully experience things in the long term?
Nevertheless Sonya's words were beginning to take root in her and she made sure to put on a smile in reply. Letting herself be lost in thought for a moment while the woman places their order Hebiru determines she does not have sufficient data to come to a proper conclusion. So as much as she'd like to refuse out of hand and get back to work when the conversation turns to the subject of a night club she doesn't.
"I cannot say I have. Unless I'm reading things incorrectly I'm assuming that's about to change?" Hebiru said more than asked. Pulling out her phone she sent a brief text to Shirei to close for the day and was slightly surprised when she received an enthusiastic emoji-filled reply back within seconds. Little did Hebiru know her assistant had figured out exactly where she was through the use of social media and was practically squealing the moment she received the text. She'd be facing many 'subtle' inquiries over the next few weeks, but that's a story for another time.
"It appears I do not have any remaining responsibilities for today. Of course I do not wish to impose should you have any but otherwise I do believe I shall take you up on the offer."
After all, what's the worse that could happen?

The Doctor is In"I would hardly say they are unsafe." Hebiru acknowledged with a half-nod. "Simply that overuse is not advised. Much like anything else, moderation is key. How one uses their skills is often much more important than what abilities they possess."
"Yeah." Shirei agreed with an enthusiastic nod before chuckling at Freja's knife comment. "Not a bad idea, maybe I should get one like that too."
Finishing up with Freja's leg Hebiru gently lowered the limb once more.
"Hmm, it should not take more than a week or two for the injuries on your arms and leg to be fully healed. I would not recommend straining your arms too much for the first three days however or it may take longer."
Inspecting the grey-haired student's shoulder she let out a hum.
"Apologies, Helt-san. I will need to cut your shirt a little to properly treat your shoulder. Should you prefer I didn't I can attempt to work around it however."
She doubted the piece of cloth would still be useable either way what with the pair of knives sticking through it. Even so she would acquiesce should Freja not wish for it to be damaged further. Removing the knives themselves should not take long either way, especially not with Shokuhou present to assist. A few minutes, the same procedure as the one on her leg and perhaps a stitch or two and they would be done.

The Doctor is InHebiru took a deep breath. An action that did not go unnoticed by Shirei. The student had enough knowledge about her physiology to be aware of her lack of lungs and by extension lack of need for outward signs to show when she breathed. The fact that her deep breath was visible meant that Hebiru was making it so on purpose. Shirei gulped.
"Getting better?" Hebiru asked without any accusation in her voice. Intonation was hardly necessary between the two of them after all. Shirei replied with a flinch.
"Y-yeah. I mean, she's a bit unwell right now but- but overall she's getting better."
"Shirei." Hebiru said with a sigh. "We both know 'getting better' in this context is meant in the medical sense. Do not mock my intellect in this manner, it is beneath you."
The girl froze, a tremble running through her. Wide eyed her gaze flicked to Sadako, hoping to find a way out of this situation. Deep inside she knew there wasn't one even before she did so.
"We're supposed to be heroes, right?" Shirei began with a hint of trepidation in her voice. "That's what we're here for. If we can't do that, then what's the point, right?"
She swallowed, suddenly finding her throat dry.
"Airi-chan wants to be a great hero. She really does. She's trying so, so hard to be one but it hasn't been working and it's hurting her. It's... It's..." Shirei fumbled, struggling for words. "It's like how physical therapy after an injury hurts but not doing it would cause much more damage in the long term, you know. She can't get there on her own. Her own quirk is hindering her, Yanai-sensei. Airi-chan needs help. You can't get past a blockade on your own if it's made by the very thing trying to fix it. Her own mind is working against her when she uses her quirk. I can help her."
Shirei's words turned rambly, structure making way for a gush of words the more she continued.
"It's like how you need to set a broken bone before letting it heal or it'll never be right again. Or, or, like how when trying to lift a heavy weight you need a spotter and maybe a coach to improve? It hurts and is really hard in the beginning but if it's not done you never get to where you want, you know? Airi-chan can be so strong. She's amazing. I can't watch her slowly decline and never live up to what she could be. You understand right, Sadako-sensei?"
She asked almost pleadingly, looking at the counselor like she was trying to grasp a lifeline.

The Doctor is In"Pfft, don't worry about it!" Shirei said with a friendly laugh. "We're here to be heroes, no way you'll get in trouble for that!"
"While the situation is a bit more complex than that, Shirei." Hebiru replied with a pointed look. "You are not entirely incorrect. Miss Helt, provided you were truthful about being ambushed and did not leave out any important details there should not be any negative consequences. Use of force for the purposes of self defense is permitted under UAU regulations provided the student was not the instigator of the conflict. I will advise you however to seek out the school's advice on how to deal with the media should it be necessary."
Finishing up with the second arm she gestured for Shirei to assist with disinfecting the grey-haired girl's leg as Freja continued talking. Hebiru hummed thoughtfully in reply, the movement of her head a bit between a nod and a shake.
"Yes and no, miss Helt. While 'super healing quirks' as you called them certainly have their advantages it is dangerous to become reliant on them. The full side effects have yet to be explored and there are rumors of some worrying results in the long term."
Shirei rolled her eyes while out of the nurse's sight and winked at Freya to hide the flinch said movement prompted.
"Of course, Yanai-sensei. Your method is waaaay better." She giggled.
"I will make you wait outside. Do not doubt it." Hebiru joked back after catching on to how Freja and Shirei are attempting to lighten the mood, her tone perhaps a bit too even to succeed. "Which would be very inconvenient given that I require you to hold miss Helt's leg steady."
Propping the limb up on her shoulder and spraying a generous dose of the anesthetic spray all over and around Freja's leg injury Hebiru waited a moment for it to take effect before getting to work.

The Doctor is In"That would be wonderful, Tamashiro-sensei." Hebiru replied while putting a kind smile on her face. Competent as she might be Hebiru's more and more discovering how much time is the constraining factor when it comes to doing research on her own. With someone as competent as Futaba working alongside her she's sure they could progress far quicker than she could by herself.
"I'm sure they would." Hebiru nodded at the mention of publications. In her experience they tended to almost compete for them, eager to make money off her work. It mattered little to her so long as she managed to advance her research. "I'll collate some of my past research that may be relevant, combined with your paper that should give us a great starting point to branch out further. When would you have time to sit together and compare notes?"------ Tags: Futaba Tamashiro Yanai Hebiru

The Doctor is InHebiru considered Sonya's words carefully. She'd need to see about having a new computer installed in UAU's infirmary. While her current one certainly wasn't bad she doubted it had the kind of security required to work on a project such as this. Porting everything over and making sure all the correct systems were in place would take a while but it would improve things for years to come. Yes, sacrificing the short term to improve the long term was an easy choice to make.
"Please do not be concerned. UAU's students will remain my top priority. There is likewise no need to worry about my sleep schedule. I will rest much easier once sufficient progress has been made."
She made sure to put a grateful smile on her face when Sonya mentioned caring about her health. Even if it was unnecessary. Hebiru barely had a 'health' that could be cared about. Her complete lack of internal organs made sure of that. She supposed everything had its advantages and disadvantages. While her form still seemed to either mimic of suffer from many of the same problems as anyone else's, things such as disease or illness rarely managed to take hold.
"Excellent. I must admit, it has been a while since I've enjoyed the company of a peer outside of a professional environment. Albeit I suppose that is what this will soon become too. No matter."
Hebiru shrugged. She hadn't been lying when she said it had been a while. With muted emotions she had little interest in socializing and with a physiology that only made sense skin deep any form of deeper intimacy would be impossible leading her to mostly avoid social interactions unless they were necessary. Yes, she'd much rather focus on her research instead.
Still, it couldn't hurt now and then, could it? She'd have a few drinks, dinner and enjoy a pleasant conversation. What more could she ask for? While she didn't have one she vaguely felt the equivalent of her stomach churning. She really couldn't ask for more until she progressed further, could she?

The Doctor is InYanai Hebiru's mind was going a mile a minute. The revelation she'd received was highly unexpected but slot into place like the final piece of a puzzle, finally revealing the full picture.
Being unable to move for the majority of one's formative years was bound to bestow anyone with a certain perspective of life. One that shows clearly how fragile it is, how many things are taken for granted and how easily said things can be lost.
It certainly explained much. Why the woman before her seemed to chase whatever she desired with almost reckless abandon. Why she moved at her own pace without caring what others thought and why she sought closeness in abundance that she would not have been able to reciprocate without her implanted support. Above all, it explained the sheer amount of resources she was willing to pour into this project.
Hebiru could have offered condolences or sympathy but she strongly believed neither of them had any interest in such a thing. Instead she put her tablet down for a moment and nodded in agreement.
"My, you have accomplished quite a lot despite the lack of a headstart, miss Chernovna. I am most certainly interested in participating in this endeavour."
Tapping her touchscreen keyboard while she talked Hebiru navigated to her agenda, highlighted a rather large amount of hours within it and turned the tablet to face Sonya. She was certain she did not need to elaborate on why she was interested in participating. Her past research was into similar subjects and the 'mutation' part of her quirk was common knowledge. The way it affected her sensory input was not of course but she had no doubt someone looking hard enough might be able to intuit it.
"While I cannot abandon my job as UAU's resident medical professional for obvious reasons I am capable of putting these fifty-six hours aside every week to assist with the research and development of this technology. Am I correct in assuming you already have a contract in the making?"

The Doctor is In"That would certainly be helpful." Hebiru replied with a nod and several hand gestures."I was also hoping to inquire whether you would be interested in participating in a study on the effects of quirk-altered physiology on sensory input. Having another perspective on the matter would greatly benefit my research."
While the side effects weren't exactly common knowledge it was no secret that Yanai Hebiru's internals were far from the norm. Certainly the 'transformation' part of her quirk was classified information available only to those who needed it to work alongside her but the 'mutation' she suffered from was in the public registry. As such it wasn't exactly difficult to guess why she had such an interest in the subject nor why she would believe Futaba might be similarly interested.

The Doctor is In Seeing the arriving cups of coffee Hebiru considered jokingly rolling her eyes again. She quickly discarded the idea realizing she'd already done so moments before and doing so again already could give the misconception she was actually annoyed. Instead she quirked one side of her lips up in a knowing smile. Raising the cup she inhaled deeply to take in the fragrance.
"Oh my~" Hebiru continued with one eyebrow slightly raised. "Does this cafe always serve coffee of this quality?"
Her attention was quickly taken by the card in front of her. Small it may be it was more in depth than she'd been expecting. Far, far more in depth. She supposed it was only to be expected that an incredible amount of thought would be put into a piece of technology as advanced and invasive as this one but it still took her off guard. Her eyes narrowed. To produce something like this...
Absent-mindedly she nodded at Sonya's request, too focused on the card in front of her to provide an appropriate reply to the compliment. If it had gone through fifteen years of development it would make sense that it had gotten this far. She charitably ignored the more likely interpretation of miss Chernovna's words, that this design had been fully completed fifteen years ago. After all, this schematic looked like it had gone through a lot of revisions. The kind that is made after flaws or inadequacies in the design were found or specific improvements in certain areas were requested. While the former of the two could be explained by animal testing the latter very much could not.
She had never heard of ASTA taking part in human experimentation and given their sterling reputation highly doubted they would risk engaging in such a thing without going through the long-winded legal requirements even if it could serve the greater good. It is only with that thought that she briefly managed to draw her attention away from the card and look back up into Sonya's appraising eyes. Hebiru didn't think keeping her waiting would be a good idea yet she needed a bit more time to mull things over before she could reply. Downing her cup of coffee ignorant of its temperature and offhandedly gesturing for another a thought occurred to her.
Sonya had not stated her company was the one to develop it. Simply that it was fifteen years old and she was looking to improve upon it. Had it been anyone else Hebiru would have considered the vagueness to be some kind of test to judge her qualifications but that did not line up with what she knew of miss Chernovna. No, it made far more sense that this design was obtained from a different company or organisation that simply paid much less attention to ethics during its development and Sonya would rather not dwell on such a thing.
Taking the hint Hebiru made sure she herself would not bring it up either. Ethics aside the design held a level of potential that could not be ignored and would be very valuable if it could be adapted to see more widespread usage. Testing, retesting and confirming the safety of such a marvel would have them run into the exact same problems she would should she try to create something like this by herself however with a schematic as elaborate as this and likely fully functional it is highly likely a great many steps will take far less time. Not to mention that with ASTA's budget they could progress much faster than the norm even without her. With her expertise thrown in however...
It was rare that something made Hebiru's breath catch but this certainly did the trick. In her search for a solution to her quirk related woes she'd devoted a great amount of time to the study of neuroscience. While she'd eventually ran into bottlenecks and difficulties adapting the field of study to the physiology of one without a central nervous system those very problems she'd encountered made her uniquely suited to this project. Not to mention there was a good chance that the data and insights gathered during it were likely to be highly beneficial to her own studies.
She had to take a moment to gather herself. Muted as her emotions were she could nonetheless detect them affecting her physically in moments like these and had to consciously bring everything under control before she could trust herself to continue the conversation without letting them get the better of her. Even though little more than a minute had passed since she'd began analyzing the card it still annoyed her greatly to have to spend several seconds on such a thing.
"My, miss Chernovna, you certainly never fail to impress. I must admit I have a great many questions but let us focus on the most important matters for now. First off, I am indeed confident I can refine this design further and am most interested in taking part in this project. The main questions I have however before I agree to anything are to what extent ASTA intends to prioritize it, what manner of resources the company intends to allocate to the development of such technology and what direction the developmental process is meant to go."

The Doctor is InWhile she understood the necessity Yanai Hebiru couldn't say she was all too fond of going out drinking with her colleagues. Already she could see the work begin to pile up while she was out here, listening to teachers chatter away. She'd have to cut her sleep short again if she didn't want to fall behind. Still, as she spotted Futaba she realized the staff mixer wouldn't be a total loss. Excusing herself from her current conversation she made her way over to the librarian and gestured for a refill while sitting down next to her.
"Hello miss Tamashiro, I hope i'm not being a bother?" Hebiru asked while signing along with her words. "I've been meaning to talk to you for a while. If I remember correctly you study the effects of quirks on one's health as well, right?"

The Doctor is In Following the hostess it did not take Hebiru long to spot Sonya. In fact, one would have to be blind not to notice even before she came into view. The very surroundings almost seemed to warp around her, people acting just a bit differently when in her vicinity and seeming to orbit her from a distance. Too awed or afraid to get close yet unwilling to stay too far away lest they miss something. Spotting the woman herself Hebiru made sure to put on a smile as she returned her greeting.
"I could say the same, Sonya. Why, you're positively glowing." Hebiru replied with a soft titter. "Work has been busy as always but I have been well. What about you? How have you been?"
She feigned a quick eye roll as she allowed the white haired woman to fuss over her as she got seated, exchanging a bit more small talk as she did. Resting her arms on the table she waited until Sonya herself was seated as well before she got to the meat of the matter.
"You mentioned you had something I could assist with? Shall we get started on this matter before you make the poor girl faint?" Hebiru said referring to the fidgety waitress returning with their drinks. She hoped hers was coffee somehow. Sleep was not something she'd been able to fit nearly enough of into her schedule these past few days and she felt like she'd need her energy to keep up with the person in front of her.

"I see, I see!" Shirei replied, her head bobbing up and down enthusiastically as she listened with a smile and a gleam in her eye. "One second, let me note that down."
Her thumb almost blurred over the screen of her smart phone, letters forming words and words forming sentences at a speed that clearly showed her experience. It would have been impressive even if it had been her sole focus but somehow she managed to keep her attention on Freja at the same time.
"Sounds like quite the fight. You made it though and got an experience that'll serve you well. I'm jealous. You can hold your head high, Freja!" Shirei said with full conviction, her eyes not breaking contact with Freja for even a second. Unless she was wrong then... There! For just a split second she could see it, a hint of pride. Immediately Shokuhou latched onto it with her quirk and amplified it with care, making sure to bring it to the fore without overpowering any of the grey-haired student's other emotions. At the same time she made sure to slightly dial the feelings of guilt her words may have aroused in the girl down.
She could see it. Even though the signs were slight Shirei had gotten very good at reading them. When someone was tense it always showed in their posture. Their shoulders hunch just the slightest bit more, the side of their cheeks just below the ear thickened just a bit due to the clenching of their jaw and their centre of gravity almost seemed lower as they drew in on themselves. While she couldn't say she could accurately notice those things in anyone just yet she was certainly attentive enough to notice when they faded away and unless she was imagining it Freja looked just the slightest bit less burdened by what had happened. Shokuhou's eyes throbbed, sending a sharp spike of pain akin to being stabbed by an ice pick through her head. She didn't let it show on her face.
"My apologies for the wait."
"Welcome back, Yanai-sensei!"
"Let's continue. Miss Helt, this may sting for a bit. Please be aware the pain will fade shortly." Hebiru stated as she carefully took a hold of Freja's arm and applied the anesthetic spray. The spray was short lasting so she would need to stitch the first arm up before applying the spray to the second one but so long as Freja held still she was confident she could finish both arms in less than five minutes even with the slight wait for the spray to take effect.
