gh, the social games. Was he really going to pretend there wasn't anything bubbling under the surface? The lengths he went to to disrupt Farrin during the challenge. The attitude lining his words now. Bunny boy was batting down some beef with him. What was the point in pretending otherwise?

"That yuh've a problem wit' me. You were so determined ta' get in me' way that yuh' scored nil," Farrin shot back. "Keepin' a competitor's score low is no worthwhile feat when dey're focused on da' actual goal n' yuh' make it yer' one objective ta' sully their work. So, it had nothin ta' do wit' the challenge er' festival."

Interrupting a distracted target was hardly a mark of skill, especially when it came at the cost of one's own score. Had Farrin followed suit, at least half of the competitors present would have been scoreless, but that wasn't the goal. Now, had Rahul disrupted his efforts while claiming a high score of his own, that would have been a different story entirely. But he didn't. He walked a senseless path that could only be motivated by a rather minuscule list of potential items.

"Either yuh' honestly think that gettin' in yer' competitor's way is some claim ta' fame, despite yer' own poor placement, which is asinine at best, er' yuh've a problem wit' me. N' if yuh' do, stop playin' games... n' say as much," he turned the words back.

"We're stuck 'ere anyways, so whatever it is, yuh' might as well get it out."

suspicious brow rose. Maybe he knew the kid was prone to overreact. Maybe he didn't. Either way, it had cost Farrin precious seconds and nerves that felt like microwaved popcorn. Outrunning sound was quite a claim to fame. Outrunning light? Short of some godly speed quirk that put chronokinesis to shame, one would need to become energy to manage that feat.

"Water world!" One student shouted from the center of the arena.

Was it a supermove? Farrin slung the basket over his shoulder and backpedaled a few steps. There were still enough balloons to snatch, but a supermove might spell game over for the unprepared. He wouldn't count himself among their ranks. This time, Farrin was ready.

True to the move's name, the student spat an endless geyser into the air and spewed water across almost two-thirds of the remaining tiles. Some of the others slipped and fell. Where some of the contestants were attacking the tiles outright, others like the water-boy over here made their passing untenable.

Farrin leaped back onto another tile that began to drop, then jumped again landing on more solid footing. People were more problematic than the actual obstacles, and maybe that was the point. Still, he had a job to do. Farrin lunged into the air and snatched a third balloon, swiftly tucking it into the basket.

Another interesting tactic caught his attention. One girl used her quirk to rein in the winds and muster a current that blew more balloons to the safety of an uncompromised tile. There was no replicating that with chronokinesis, but Farrin wasn't without his own advantages. He had mobility few of the others could match. Another leap, and he was off to snatch some more balloons out of the air.

arrin barred his growing disbelief and screwed the bolts locking those bars down tight. Ten years? No way. But... maybe? You shouldn't judge a book by its cover, and yet he was only human. Maybe this book was more of the straightforward sort.

Well, mama O'Rourke hadn't raised a rude ruffian. Sparkle wanted to show him something and the night's agenda was rather vacant. Farrin leaned low, then leaped up into the air. A firm grip latched onto a windowsill about halfway up the building; then, he threw himself up to the roof.

He landed with the clack of lightly armored boots against the concrete. "So yuh've been doin' this without proper footwear fer' ten years now?" He asked, half ready to lunge when she nearly fell again. Fortunately, she recovered before plunging into the smelly depths below again.

Farrin turned, looking the rooftop over. A mix of exhaust vents and conduits ran across the ground with a stairwell on the far side of the building. That internal radar, intuition, wasn't picking up on any traps. She didn't seem the sort, but then an ambush's lure rarely did.

Still, Kawahara, or Sparkle, hadn't given him reason to distrust her. So, Farrin found his feet taking him toward the street side of the roof. Stars slowly came to dot the sky, and Tokyo's nightlife came alive. He stood at the edge and watched below as people scrambled home from work or back out for a fun night after putting their hours in.

"E'er work wit' someone callin 'emselves Peacekeeper?" The question asked before Farrin could even think. The jury was still out on whether or not Sparkle was really a ten-year vet, but you never knew how few degrees of separation might exist.

he gears were turning in Farrin's time-touched mind, but it took a moment to realize his mistake this time. Although he was speaking in Japanese, he continued to process his words like that of an Irish-born New Yorker. Again, even after all these years, it was difficult to shake his parents' lingo. Maybe part of him didn't want to.

"Sorry lad, I meant like brilliant, not dangerous," he explained without fully explaining.

He was an odd one here and accepted that fact a while ago, but the school was packed to the brim with fellow black sheep. That much wouldn't need explaining, so rather than spend ever-precious time doing so, he returned to the topic at hand. Namely, the binding cloth.

"If yuh think yuh can weave tagether the cloth without it puttin meself er' others at risk, n' still hold the mercury in place, then that sounds like a plan ta' me!" He said with a grin.

Chronokinesis had an odd set of rules Farrin had to follow. It moved forward and couldn't be kept still or reversed. No jumping around it either. And he couldn't just throw fields over people all will-nilly. A willing target, making the decision to accept time's touch was much easier to envelop in his fields than someone resisting. For this reason, it was simple, albeit tiring, to speed up a friend. An enemy, however, required some work to slow down. Usually, he had to place a field behind them or low enough that they wouldn't see it. Then, when they moved into the field, the requirements were met, and they slowed down. It would've been a boon to hero-kind if Farrin could just run around slowing people as he willed, but attempting as much often saw his descent into temporal sifting almost immediately.

Perhaps, though, with the binding cloth, he could find something like a loophole. The field wasn't directly summoned over the opposition. It was locked around a pliable piece of gear, which happened to collide with the target. Normally, aside from personal fields, which were anchored to a person, his temporal fields were immutable--locked in place. But if it were locked around something that could move, similar to those personal fields, though wrapped around something flexible, maybe it would work!

The gears were turning again, crunching the ups and downs of his own quirk, but when he was finished, he looked to Kei again. "Oh, I hope this works" he said, again, with a smile.

arrin leaned his head back and shut his eyes for a moment, a long exhale escaping his lungs, taking any remaining fight left in his body with it. The tension in his shoulders and neck softened. A million plights, problems, and obstacles still stood tall further down the path, but none were in sight. He had enemies to overcome, people he missed, and hardships to fight through. Those were future Farrin's problems, though. Right here, right now, in this precise moment, things were okay.

One eye opened as he turned his head and looked the hostages over from afar, then picked himself up. "I think dey're unharmed," he said, approaching each of them with his hands raised so they would know him to be a friend. Despite his heroics display, fear had a way of eroding logic.

"Oh yeah, best shams I e'er had," he returned her sarcasm with a slight smirk, undoing one hostage's bonds. "It's okay, police are nearby," he assured an older fella.

Farrin then walked to a younger woman and started at her bound wrists but looked over to Yoko. "Yuh' threw yerself ahead one o' their attacks. No matter the outcome, it counts fer' somethin." He paused a moment, thinking the fight over. Pride and confidence played against strategy and encouragement. " 'Sides, the others coulda jumped in at any moment. Even if I took that one bastard down, no tellin' what quirks the others were packin' n' the damage they could do together. We know that when faced wit' more than one person, they fled."

Compromise. It was the bedrock of any positive, workable relationship between associates, friends, and even strangers sometimes. Farrin was confident he could have taken Imasu, maybe the others too, but there was no telling if he could have succeeded over all of them. What they did know was both of them were alive, and the hostages were unharmed. That was win enough of today.

he light of violet chaos and golden order danced in the skies. SuperNova was unrelenting, firing below even as Farrin's blow rocketed him skyward. Caught with an uppercut that would have robbed nearly any other of consciousness, SuperNova grinned. Though powerful and sincere in his efforts, the pro-hero was certainly on brand among hero society's theatrics. The verbal parries and thrusts lit his soul aflame, and then the little dragon's fist crashed against the hero-villain's armor, launching the man back to earth.

Debris spat into the air as the giant smashed into the ground beside Stronghold, and before he could pick himself up, the air cracked as the series of ear-splitting explosions from Jun's attack bombarded Stronghold. Could she have continued the fight? Of course, but it appeared she believed the students' display to be one of worthy merit. Now, this band had one final obstacle to overcome. Him.

SuperNova boomed out of the crater he had been planted in and landed aground, his feet firmly planted in concrete. Numbers would not frighten him. Not when he fights against worse odds on the daily. No, he wore the eyes of the predator staring down its prey.

Meanwhile, Farrin knelt. His heart beat a million miles a minute. Mustering the speed to dodge SuperNova's attacks had been costly. He outran sound, but dodging light was another matter entirely. A moment's rest and he stood. "Jus' a little further now," he murmured, then he was off.

He zoomed by the other's side, fortunate to find his temporal deceleration wasn't needed to bring Stronghold to surrender. In truth, he couldn't so easily slow people down directly. More often than not, he required they move into his deceleration fields. Time had rules, weird rules, that weren't easily broken. Now, the only threat ahead of them was one he was well acquainted with but had never defeated.

If it was Jun's attack that brought Stronghold down, she had to be tapped or near it. But, maybe with Jack, who was coming in fresh, the two could muster the firepower they required.

"Mood Ring, I know yer' tank needs ta' be tapped, but if yuh've anythin' left, try musterin' it up one more time," his gaze never veered from SuperNova, "Eh... Sirius," he recalled the dragon's hero name from the few classes they shared, "yuh've an energy emission quirk as well, so if yuh dun' mind, you should do the same. One big attack."

Finally, he looked to Freja, "Retry," he looked to with a smirk building across his face, "I think we should go' fer a run. Give our friends 'ere their openin."

"NEED I REMIND YOU, YOU STILL WALK AMONG THE BATTLEFIELD!" SuperNova shouted, golden light gathering, congealing all around him until it focused into his hands.

If any of the troop wasn't on board, well, Farrin couldn't stop them from going about their own tactics, otherwise, he would throw a temporal acceleration field around Freja.

"NOT SO FAST!"

A brilliantly bright beam launched into the sky and dropped as a mighty blade between the students. The attack was aimed so that it wouldn't land any direct hits, but any caught close to the point of contact would surely be singed and seared, though still quite alive. Farrin, however, burst out to the right, away from the attack.

"Oi, yuh' know better than most, Nova. Fast is what I do!" Farrin chirped.

The air cracked as he launched himself at SuperNova's flank. Another, smaller beam of light parted from the larger attack. Then there were two. Then ten. Farrin weaved between explosions of light and lunged into the giant, throwing him off a step. A flurry of fists pounded against SuperNova's armor, forcing him further and further back, but the pro hero rode the momentum of a heavier blow and spun into a slash from his blunted axe. Farrin leaped, but he knew what came next, and he wouldn't be able to dodge this one.

SuperNova's axe was a piece of specialized equipment that stored his light and, upon contact, could explode. Light burst from the ground and washed over Farrin, blasting him away, back into some rubble. The world blurred, and it took all he had to cling to consciousness. It was up to the others to deliver the next shot.

arrin stepped back, giving May the time and space she needed to mull everything over. Developing one's super move was as much about personal growth as it was about quirk theory and gut feelings. Instinct, strategy, soul searching, it all needed to congeal into something synergistic... and incredibly powerful. It could be overwhelming. He had been working at it for months now with so little show. His progress could quite literally be measured in his palm. But more on that later.

Inspiration: his mother. Understanding: he was the temporal medium, where Chronokinesis was strongest and most likely to cooperate. Scope: this was pretty similar to understanding. Him. He was the temporal vector, but that vector's potential was nigh limitless. Feeling... ugh, what a feckin' mess. Confidence's warmth kissed his skin, and the morose march of the void threatened to drown him. Time was at his fingertips, and yet there was no telling whether he would stand atop the mountain in a minute's time or be buried below the depths. One moment proud, the next hollow. Happy for all he built, pained for all he lost. Life was riding the wildest rollercoaster, and sometimes, others would ride with you, while other times, you rode alone.

A name? A name. He had a name. It was the surest part of the process so far. In this singular matter, all doubt had been burned away. He was his mother's son, inheritor of all she left behind. Her dreams were his goals, and her strength was now his own.

"Blade o' the King: Emerald Smash," he answered Stellar's class question firmly.

He turned to face her and the others, dropping his fists to his sides, waiting for the next step they would go over. Dust slipped between his fingers.

exactly," Farrin confirmed with a smirk. "Some dopes out der' might try ta' leg it away from a crime scene, n' they've earned 'emselves more den' a slap on the wrist, but jus' because they're an absolute eejit dun' always mean they need a wallopin, 'specially if no one was actually hurt."

Preferable though Farrin was to a good match of fisticuffs, hurting people unnecessarily wasn't his thing. Friendly competitions, protecting those that couldn't defend themselves, or apprehending some real piece of shite, all of those were valid reasons to throw hands, but a purse snatcher acting out of desperation didn't need a broken leg, or a near-sonic stun round blasted into their back if it could be avoided. Of course, Farrin could simply catch the crook, but the more tools he had to work with, the better. Long gone were the days of equipment aversion.

"Honestly, I hadn't e'en thought o' that. I found out a while back that mercury sorta holds a residual temporal charge," or whatever that temporal power really was, he opted for his own nomenclature for now, "but I dun' know if that will extend me' fields or anythin' like that. If they could apply the effects o' me' quirk to a target, that'd be mighty deadly." More of his old lingo, 'deadly' meaning brilliant rather than lethal in this instance.

Farrin eyed Kei's notebook. Peering the pages might be a little intrusive, but he was certainly a curious cat. What did the lad have in mind? The more tools in the time-turner's toolbox, the better.

uccess! Farrin traded hands, discarding offense in the name of defense. The back foot was never a comfortable place, but the students were outnumbered. His eyes drifted from Isamu across the aisles and the myriad junk food options lining the shelves to the rest of the goons. Isamu's mind games bounced and spoken familiarity bounced from Farrin as if he wore armor. Answers would have to wait. First he had to make everyone in the store safe.

"Oh, I'm sure I've a trick er' two yuh haven't seen yet. Why leave so prematurely?" Farrin spoke, oozing confidence.

Bait and switch. Sort of. If he could draw Isamu in for one more bout, Farrin was sure he could knock the fella unconscious. Chasing the lot might be problematic. They had numbers and coordination. Take the serpent's head off and all that, though, and he might be able to run them all down.

Then, a flare in Farrin's mind. Danger. He eyed the lot left and right, but none had budged. With a crack, pain pulsed up from Farrin's back. He didn't fall over, but he certainly stumbled forward a few steps.

"Oi, what's the big idea," he turned around, eyeing the now-furry troll. "Give us a break, would yuh?"

Realization hammered its way into his mind. He didn't have the bug bits anymore. Yoko did. Farrin threw his right arm toward the crooks and fired another stun round, but whether it landed or not, he hadn't anticipated some sort of teleportation-via-crocodile quirk. This fella wasn't related to the one he and Freja faced, right? No time. Farrin turned back toward Yoko and went to work deflecting her blows with his left arm, chopping at each incoming strike. She swung a like of bricks, but Farrin's Emerald Fist was rooted in dornálaíocht, an Irish bare-knuckled boxing style where the left arm was used to deflect blows rather regularly in addition to throwing jabs. Eventually, though, with the villains' disappearance, Yoko relented. The bug bits were gone. And the girl dropped.

Farrin dropped onto his rear, filling his lungs before letting out something, part exhale, part sigh. Disappointment. This lot got away. He eyed the hostages. They were safe, and that's what mattered most. He would unbind them in a moment.

"Yup, that's me. Yoko, I take it?" He asked her in kind. "I'm a UAU student. No idea who these feckers were, er' how they knew me. N' yerself? Any familiarity wit' em?" Maybe they took her wallet and saw her ID or something? That was the easy answer, but there was always the chance that wasn't the case. "Was pretty brave o' yuh ta' jump in like that," he added a moment later.

ake a look around, lass. Yer' at UAU, weirdos as far as the eye can see," Farrin chirped up the most reassuring response he could muster. Every word of it rang true between his ears. Only a special flavor of crazy made it into hero academies of UA's caliber. Its hallowed halls were packed to the brim with students whose drives were just as potent as their quirks were powerful. Some even more so. Whether by lineage, loss, ambition, or whatever else, potent wills paved everyone's paths here.

And now Farrin needed to will these damn fields together. Acceleration and deceleration. They weren't supposed to mix, but his lineage, his loss, his ambition, all he worked for--it was stronger than flimsy-arse theoretical physics. His quirk was a scientific anomaly. The rules had been broken upon his birth. The playbooks needed to be rewritten, and it was by his bloody hand that the pages would be inked.

Multitasking. He snatched the coin out of the air. He listened to May's story. He enveloped that damn coin in his personal, temporal field. It was more his home than anywhere else, like a second layer of the skin he lived in. If there was anywhere two might become one, it was there. He was the passage through which time flowed into the quirkly realm, only he exerted it in one of two ways. He needed to take that mental exertion and return it to sender... back to the source. He was the harmonious middle ground.

"If yuh' tied two vehicles tagether n' one floored it while the other did its best ta' go grandpa slow, fair chance the tension would tear the tether," it wasn't the perfect metaphor, truly depending on what the tether was made of but they could toss the specifics out the window, "I'm tryin' ta' make time the tether, maybe break it a tad, yuh' know, jus' where the bads are," he smirked, recalling the thunderous power and lightning speeds his mum commanded when using the Queen's Decree.

A spark of emerald light flashed in his hand, but he paid it no mind. He ran the mental gymnastics, bounded over the obstacles, and crunched the damn numbers. All that was left was to feel it happen. A pop, then a burst, but his fist remained clenched over the coin, unwilling to open it and find the results. What if it was another failure?

"Hm, what if we start by recreatin some o' the conditions yuh' were under when yuh' last manifested that energy differently?" He spun the conversation back to May's quirk as Chronokinesis settled. "I can speed other people up wit' me quirk, n' I've been told that it feels kinda like bein' hit wit' an adrenaline shot." The world slowed and it felt like lightning flooding the veins. That was his best description. In this instance, the benefits might be twofold. "Plus, well, yuh'd feel a temporal touch all around yuh. I know it's no' the same as yer' quirk, but maybe there's somethin mental there in holdin power close rather than thinkin ta' part wit' it"

h, to be so hot headed. There was nothing Farrin wanted more than to blow all their resources, burn half the isle down, grab the nearest vessel's attention, and get the hell out of there, but patience, unfortunately, was a virtue. One smoke stack spearing the sky not a mile away from the burning husk of their ship? No one short of an expert rescue hero would notice the difference. One of those options wasn't an option at all.

"Latter won't work when there's a burnin' ship not too far away, lad," Farrin laid out flatly. He hadn't heard Rahul speak to pretty much anyone, but the attitude laced in his words was obvious enough. "An experienced eye will focus on known quantities, the lifeboats, 'fore they investigate one smoke stack not too far from another. Right now, we're bettin' on low odds because they're better than zero n' because wood is a resource we have at our disposal. After e'erythin' submerges, our chances go up 'til nightfall."

A few hours at best, but it wouldn't be entirely unreasonable for someone to catch the smoke signal by then. Whether contacted by the ship's personnel during the attack, the heroes who were aboard, or due to their absence at the dock, someone would learn what happened out there and send rescue vessels. They just had to hope it happened sooner rather than later.

"Barrin' some incredibly unlikely odds, the long game is our only real shot. Whatever problems yuh' have wit' me, yuh' best get comfortable wit' em because we're gonna be here fer' a while still."

Just call it like you see it. Rahul clearly didn't think much of him, and Farrin didn't really care... yet, at least. They had a job to do. So, Farrin's eyes were locked onto the skies above, slowing as much of the smoke as possible to make their signal distinct and noticeable.

ith the fire going and the smoke rising, Farrin dropped onto his back, nestled in a mound of sand. His eyes shone gold with chronokinesis. No sense waiting. Once night fell, the smoke signal would be pretty useless, though the fire might catch someone's eyes. Still, better they got off the island sooner than later. Farrin didn't want to be stuck with Rahul anymore than Rahul did with him.

A thin net-like field corralled the smoke in temporal deceleration. It slowed and gathered, becoming a bolder, easier mark. Maybe he should try shaping the fields into letters. A giant SOS in the sky? The more intricate the field though, the more focus required. The more focus, the more taxing the effort. No, a large blot of inky smoke would do. Rescue heroes and JCG would know what to look for.

"How many o' those bunnies can yuh' make at once?" He asked.

There was more kindling than time. Plentiful though the trees were, the human body could only go for a few days without water. Boiling salt water was an option, but with what implements would they catch the freshwater condensation? Vegetation was their best bet, but even then, the odds weren't great if it came to such a timely length.

"If nobody finds us by tomorrow, we might need ta' burn a lot more, create a larger signal."

Burning all their resources at once was too great a risk to take prematurely, but each passing hour would shift the scales inch by inch. There was another option, temporal deceleration, but it was not an idea Farrin wished to entertain. And given the rbf pasted across Rahul's visage, he wouldn't like it either. Fella clearly wanted nothing to do with Farrin, a bold inverse in his attitude during the Sports Fest challenge, where his eyes were firmly fixed on the time-turner. Please, just let someone spot the damn signal... soon.

arrin eyed the little machine as it rolled away. "W-was that thing 'ere last time I was around?" he asked. Definitely not, right? He would have remembered a little robo-roller bounding about when Kei helped him with the cannons. It wasn't pertinent information, but curiosity and all that. Clearly, Kei had been busy.

"Anyways, yeah, I wanted ta' ask yuh' fer some help wit' some new kit."

Farrin stepped further into the room, approaching the workstation Kei was standing near, and pulled out his phone. His finger danced across the screen, bringing up a video of UAU's own Ms. Mai, or Yuki Onna if going by her pro-hero name, apprehending a criminal with her many scarves. It was her own variation of the binding cloth style of combat, which wasn't entirely unseen in hero society but certainly required no small amount of skill to utilize.

"I was wonderin' if yuh' could whip up some bindin' cloth fer' me? I've a bunch o' bands n' belts wrapped 'round me arms I've used as cuffs on criminals when on patrol er ta' apply pressure ta' wounds which got me thinkin, 'why no' integrate it inta me arsenal? I've the cannons yuh' made fer' long range, n' me mitts fer' close," he eyed a clenched fist before unclenching it, "but some bindin' cloth could be used ta' apprehend the lower level dimwits quickly er' close distance on the stronger crooks."

He would need to train in this new binding cloth style, of course, but Farrin prided himself on being something of a combat savant. A few weeks of practice and he would make the cloth dance around the opposition.

orry, Momo, but not really, no," Farrin answered. He wasn't sure what to ask to begin with. Memories flashed like film behind his eyes. Shadowboxing up atop his hill at the back of UAU's training fields. His nightly sprints along the track. And, of course, more heroics classes. There wasn't much web surfing beyond happenings in Eastern Europe, where he last knew Sada to be.

"I 'preciate all the help n' explanations though. I really jus' came ta' park take in the game a bit, had a grand time I did, so all the rest is icin' on the cake."

Farrin took the card and looked it over. A little reminder of a day all his own. Not the hero-to-be, Oberon, but Farrin's. He would have to find Freja somewhere in all the mess that was the Sports Festival. She would knock this particular competition out of the park.

"It was a pleasure meetin yuh' though, er', well, meetin yuh' over dis' thing 'ere. N' thanks again fer' the info n' prizes. Maybe I'll be able ta' make it ta' one o' em Giants games."

'The golden bazookas sent you,' easy enough to remember. Farrin wasn't at all familiar with vtube culture, but that didn't mean there was nothing of interest to be found at the merch stand. You never know what you might find. All in all, a successful outing before the games began in earnest inside the festival arena. There, only first place would do.

"Alrighty, Momo, I'll be headin' out now. Hope yuh' have a grand day!"
