She felt it before she heard the shot or saw the impact at her feet. A swelling charge of energy, rapidly concentrated, instantly discharged and hurtling down on her from over head. She was moving her head to look up towards his exact location before the blast even discharged.
But discharge it did, smashing the concrete at her feet, and leaving her staring up in shock and building outrage at being ambushed! The next few bolts swerved and stopped dead in midair around her head and shoulders as she glared up his way, doing nothing obvious until-
-the gun stopped firing.
It was simple, really- Miroru interposed her quirk between the power source and the firing mechanisms, effectively depowering the energy rifle without damaging it, leaning on her knowledge of electrical engineering to break the circuit and prevent its use.
Shouting up at him, she insisted, "Drop the weapon, sir! Please lay down with your hands behind your head and prepare for your arrest!" She wasn't sure if she should proceed as if it was an actual assault, but she was doing her best to distinguish herself from her father's shoot first, arrest later stylings.
Besides, she still had like a half-dozen energy bolts floating around her to put to use if she needed to fight.

"Oh, hey!" Miroru called out as the girl approached with her trendy glasses. "I'm Miroru. It's nice to meet you- I love your hair, you must take super good care of it," She offered, admiring the classical beauty of the short, dark hair. "And yep! Those are the object of the test today- jet thrusters meant to offer some vertical mobility so I'm not as slow or simply ground bound. It'd be nice if they were purely fashion, but I'm really not that keen into style, you know?"
The redhead pointed down a long alley filled with obstacles and bad footing, "garbage" bags filled with soft padding and heavily flooded side streets. "We're gonna be racing down that alley- the idea is to find out if the mobility can make up for a lack of sheer speed. Any other questions before we get started?"

Miroru's head tilted back... and back... and back further as the robot marched into view. THAT was her opponent? That hulking monstrosity entirely managed by directed control signals via either wired or wireless methods? That hardly seemed fair. The laser blast wasn't exactly expected, but Miroru felt the amplifiers kick in to focus the produced photons, and squinted as that big "eye" lit up and launched the concentrated beam of radiated laser her way! She lifted a hand like a Jedi, as if to Force Stop the beam mid-air- only for the beam to slam into her palm and vanish entirely without damage.
"My quirk has to do with electromagnetic energy- like light," She explained. "Which gives me a lot of very mean tools to use on mechanical enemies." She lifted her ither hand and released a crackling sphere of sparks, releasing it as static to mess with Daedalus' sensors briefly. "But that wouldn't be very fun for you, so why don't we make this more of a David and Goliath sorta match? In other words..."
Miroru dropped into a boxers guard and yelled up at the bot! "COME AT ME, BRO!"

"Welcome." Miroru replied, lips quirking into a small, reassuring grin. "And alright, then. If you're sure~"
Rainbow sparks flared around Miroru, then cascaded over the area of their arena, coalescing into another, a few, a DOZEN Miroru's in all directions, the foxes scattered around her and all rushing in at once- except one! She was standing still with her hands together and seemed to be focused on creating all those other foxes!
...
But that was a fake too. Miroru, the real Miroru, was scampering off through the crowds diving at and past and through Freja, chaos all around- and only one set of audible footsteps leaving faint scuffs on the packed earth as Miroru repositioned and tried to snag Freja with a flipping toss stolen from Judo!

"Hi. You must be- um. Kaiser-san, right? I'm Miroru. A pleasure to meet you," offered the redhead as the doors to the Conflagration Zone opened and washed them down with radiant heat from inside. She recoiled for a moment, then settled, apparently perfectly comfortable an instant later despite the high heat washing over them. "I've got a coin we can toss. We can start when it hits the ground."
She walked in a ways as the doors closed again, fishing the coin out of her tracksuit pocket and holding it up so he could see it. When he seemed ready, she tossed the coin up and-
The world went white and cold for a split second the instant the coin hit the ground as Miroru grabbed all the infrared light in the area and twisted it visible, then dragged all of it to where she had been standing an instant ago. There now stood an extremely high quality image of her with her fists wreathed in painfully intense light, while the real redhead was several paces back, light folded around her to hide her from sight and radiant heat entirely as she continued to feed the continuously produced infrared light from the flames into her very not real illusion and the glowing fists serving as its very much real condensed energy weapons. It put her in the dark, but to her senses, there was a gaping hole in the infrared light permeating the area where Leo stood. Keeping up with the fight wasn't going to be a problem.
Looks like his "light quirk" guess was right on the money!
Miroru's image floated off the ground as if repulsing upwards using those glowing hands, then rushed to meet him, either moving to intercept whatever attacks he might hurl "her" way, or to meet him where he was, presumably to engage in some good old fashioned fisticuffs!

Of course hero school meant meeting with current, active heroes. It didn't mean she had to look forward to it.
One of the advantages of the relatively younger generation of heroes Miroru found herself among was a reduced awareness and fascination with the older generation of heroes outside of a select few stand-outs. Her father wasn't quite on the side of that barrier which he'd prefer, in the limelight with Leonid and the others- he was fading into obscurity, if slowly, and the fewer of her classmates knew the name of Incapacitor, the better.
It never seemed to work out that way with the older heroes, though.
He'd been very active, very prominent in the media, with flashy stories and huge triumphs. His was a tale of a hero against all odds, pitting himself and his family against the worst of the worst and coming out on top regularly. It was the sort of story that the media ate up and fed to the public en masse.
It was also built on lies.
Miroru didn't have the standing or clout to expose her father yet, much less evidence outside of hearsay, and she had zero doubt that if she tried, he'd squash her budding career like a bug. She needed to be successful FIRST. She needed to be too big to squash, or even trying was gonna be doomed.
And that meant trying to swallow her tongue around whichever of her instructors happened to be a fanboy eating up his public image. So she redoubled her determination to be civil and respectful, and waited at the appointed intersection on Ground Beta for Dauntless to appear.

Miroru stood outside the entrance to the Conflagration Zone, chewing her lower lip as she stared at the massive dome and the flickering illumination from within. Everyone knew what the Conflagration Zone was- a massive neighborhood of buildings entirely engulfed in flames- but the prospect of training there was daunting. She couldn't control fire, after all, and that made the whole idea daunting.
Or rather. It had until she'd arrived.
To her surprise, when she got close to the Zone, she could feel something thrumming wildly inside the dome. It left her frowning, puzzled- it didn't feel right. It wasn't that brightly lit but it felt like it was absolutely filled with incredible amounts of light.
The moment she realized what was in there showed on her face clear as day. Blinking wildly, she reached out with her quirk- and felt oceans of infrared light, of radiated heat, respond within the dome.
This wasn't a hazard area.
It was a stacked deck in her favor.
It took a few moments to shake herself free of her stunned state and look around again. Had the instructor and her opponent arrived and seen her spaced out like that?

"... is this really gonna work..?"
Miroru stood just inside the entrance to Ground Beta in her tracksuit- plus the glaring addition of a pair of gold-plated boots with thick soles. Within the soles, she knew, sat the turbines she'd designed and worked on with Hiyori, and she had promising thrust results from the lab, but she hadn't used them in the field yet- that's what today was for. Word had been passed to some student or another to ask for their assistance in testing mobility gear- a faster student, one that ordinarily would outpace Miroru easily, but as for who they were, that was still a mystery to Miroru herself, leaving her to do what she was doing- standing all pensive-like and trying not to get overly anxious while she waited for her racing partner to show up to turn the streets of Ground Beta into their personal competition track!

"Alright, good job! Next time, let's try to limit the number of crotch shots you go for, Tanaka, that was a bit excessive and, literally, below the belt. This is training, your classmates don't deserve that. NOW! Let's do... uhhhh, Miroru-san versus Poetri-san next."
The petite redhead popped up and ran her hands through her hair, flattening back her fox ears a moment before they popped upright again. A quick shove of her sleeves got them above her elbows, showing off the bandaged forearms on each side. They didn't seem to be covering existing damage, judging by how she moved, rolled her wrists and shook out her hands, but there was likely some reason she was wearing those.
She took her place on the packed earth of the training fields and looked back towards the class, unsure if she remembered which one was Poetri-san. That was such a cool last name. Was it foreign? Probably. European, sounded like, but Miroru couldn't remember where the other student was actually from!

"Alright, next pair! Helt-san and Ro- uh, Miroru-san!"
The teacher made a solid save avoiding Miroru's last name, and the redhead nodded gratefully, pushing up the sleeves of her jumpsuit blazer and undoing the zipper halfway, exposing the bandage wrap halfway up each forearm. Flexing her fingers and rolling her wrists, Miroru stepped onto the practice field, glancing towards her gray-haired classmate with a reassuring smile.
She wasn't sure what Freja's combat style looked like, exactly, but she was looking forward to getting to see it in action! She stood in her assigned spot and bounced a little- she'd stretched, of course, before getting out onto the field.
She caught a couple of their classmates snickering and gesturing to Freja as she took the field. Each abruptly went silent as a cold chill shot down their spines, and they realized Miroru was staring daggers their way, swallowing and falling silent to buy their freedom from her "gentle" reminder to fucking behave. Then it was back to Freja with that grin. "Ready when you are, Helt-san!"

"Oh, that makes sense," Miroru admitted. "Do you think they had that rule in place when the labs were founded? Or did someone sit down and be like "I wonder how many microprocessors I can hook up parallel before someone stops me"?" Wondered the redhead.
She stood by quietly while Hiyori went over the diagram, a little worried it might be too expensive, or too complex, but Hiyori responded positively- and started to undo her blouse.
Miroru had no idea how to react to that and blinked rapidly. When the shirt came off entirely, Miroru turned around and squawked, "OKAYI'LLLEAVEYOUTOIT" as she hurried off to fuss with the storage bins and familiarize herself as an alternative to staring at the possibly topless girl working on her gear. She didn't look to confirm if anything else came off! It wasn't worth the risk!
"Ice cream! Got it! Be right back!" Miroru croaked as she side-stepped over to the door and more or less scampered out to go find Hiyori a treat!

Ah, crumbs.
Farrin was right back on the attack, blitzing back towards her after her opportunistic smack to his elbow seemed to draw his focus back. She couldn't qualify that as a mistake, exactly, but the result was unfortunate! Someone clearly needed more head trauma!
Sadly, the pipsqueak fox wasn't exactly equipped to make that happen. Shorter, less reach, and less training meant that his guard around his head was pretty much solid unless he actively abandoned it for another maneuver, like in that elbow drop.
And then she saw him drop-step.
Her immediate reaction was to curse, profusely, in the back of her head. He was aiming center mass- she didn't really have the time or space to fall back out of the reach of the blow. She'd also felt the hammering power behind his strikes, and she was positive she couldn't absorb that hit on her throbbing guard without lasting damage it'd take time to mend. Maybe not a break, but bruises bad enough to slow down her training. Being aimed at center mass also meant she didn't really have the time to dive to either side.
So she cheated.
As Farrin launched a drop-step powerhouse that would have made Jack himself proud, Miroru... vanished. Entirely. He felt her arms around his middle an instant later, but no aggression to it, just a concession to breaking the rules as she kept him from losing his balance with no target to strike and push back from.
"Uncle! I give! I can't take a hit like that, dude, you were about to snap me in half!" Miroru's tone was light, excited, half-laughing. "Holy hell, who'd you learn to throw punches from, semi trucks?!"

Theirs? Miroru caught that and wondered. Was Zen enby? Worth asking later.
She caught Thea's eyes as they turned back, noted that queer glossy, distant look they had, despite holding a perfectly cognizant conversation. Quirk factor? Maybe. Not something she felt digging about, but an interesting thing to be aware of.
"... no, actually, I get it," Miroru offered as Thea discussed appreciating background noise. "For me, the whole world's got this... background buzz. Electronics, people, engines, the magnetic field of the planet, it's all there, all fluctuating, all the time. I dunno if it's the same as your deal, whatever it might be, but adding something substantial, like some people having a conversation or something... it helps to have something of substance to half-focus on so that the rest fades out of note." It wasn't the same, not really, especially with Thea's addiction to theftiness and stealery of the memorial varietals, but she was trying to connect at least, and offering up a bit of insight into her own situation.
"You think?" Miroru chirped, hopeful. "After going all out, I felt like I'd made an ass of myself." She listened- and covered her mouth with an abrupt snigger at Thea's curse. "Get out of my head! That's exactly what I was thinking."
Her head tilted, though, at the last bit. "Is it? In terms of experience, or do you think you treat other people lousy? I haven't seen you be an outright asshole yet- blunt, sure, but nothing awful. Being blunt and keeping to yourself isn't what I'd call shitty, at least..?"

This was what Miroru had been looking forward to.
After moving in with a cousin and enrolling in public school a few years ago, Miroru had ended up a big fish in a little pond. Outside of the hero prep academies her father had enrolled his kids in, the focus on physical conditioning and combat skills as much reduced, meaning that with her physicality and hand to hand skills, there hadn't really been anyone to outright challenge her, just some enthusiasts to keep her from getting dull.
Farrin was anything but.
His reflexes were better, his foundations were better, and while she was faster, his edges stacked up fast. She had an early edge- but from her experience, that was the sort of thing she had to capitalize on, lest her opponent get a read on her tactics and close the gaps in their armor.
For instance- Farrin knew to go for an elbow drop against an in-close opponent, and Miroru knew that would leave his collar exposed. As his elbow raised and broke his guard, she lashed her hands out to snag his collar and waistband, dropping her weight to use his downwards momentum to fold him across her back, and then surged upwards, hurling him off and sending him tumbling a few paces away in the soft grass! Grinning, she tossed her head and floofed her hair as he got back up, then charged right back in.
As if to further illustrate the difficulty with intelligent opponents and longer battles, Farrin's offensive kept her locked out of proper reach for the moment. She lunged forwards, but the jabs came fast, onetwothree, and then his right slammed against her left arm HARD. Bouncing back a step, she dropped her guard to shake her arms out for a moment before guarding up again. Perhaps reassuringly, there were no signs of bleeding or seeping beneath the arm-length bandage wraps down her arms, suggesting he wasn't pounding on damaged tissue at the moment.
"Ow. Man. You hit hard. I'm not used to standing around and taking hits." A slow breath, then a nod. "Again!" This time, she blocked the first hit, before sweeping her left fist out to smack his second jab out and used her right to aim a sharp punch at the inside of his elbow, angling to make those jabs start to hurt every time he threw them!

"Aw~! Well, glad to be fulfilling my civic duty for the week, then," Miroru quipped back, grinning. "I'm sure not disappointed to know I'll be building up someone else willing to put rubber to the road to kick some sense into the bullies and assholes of our class."
Miroru eyed him as he squared up, and adjusted her own stance to a looser one, one that still had the skeleton of a boxer's defense, but was more prepared to dodge and weave. She didn't have him on reach, power, mass, or- she suspected- skill, but she thought she could leverage her speed at least when it came to holding her own.
As he came at her, she darted in, too, not content to wait to be hit but instead hurling herself inside his reach to let the premature blow glance off her guard, doing her best to stick close and play his ribs and sides like xylophones, with her small fist whipping up and demanding he keep his guard up any time he started to drop it to protect his middle!
