My father was a gambler.

But no matter how much debt he incurred we always had a roof over our heads and food on our plates. I was his number one priority through and through. His heart belonged to the casino and he’d stay there as long as he could chase the big win. But he’d always be home in time for breakfast.

Until he wasn’t.

We spoke primarily through sticky notes. If he had to run out he would have left one on the fridge — something was wrong. Before I could process what happened the phone rang. I learned that some debts were paid in blood.

I called the cops. Told them what happened. They promised they’d get to the bottom of this. So, when the boss walked off I learned the system wasn’t about justice, it was about appearances. A near approximation of justice in every facet except where it mattered; results.

I killed them. I freed my father of the debt he had been burdened with. I freed myself from inheriting that same debt. And I got my first glimpse into the new world.

We didn’t have a funeral. I’m the only one who would miss him… or so I thought. When digging through his trash I stumbled upon the fact I had a brother. A twin brother. We were separated by our parents. Pops always said things never worked out between my mom and him but it never seemed this bad.

They may have never met but Emilio deserves to know his father passed. And that he has a brother that’ll do anything for him. I bought a ticket to Japan.

The application of skill is more important than raw ability. Antoine learned to move and control his body to coincide with the utility of his quirk and to compensate for the lack of it when his chain breaks. He's always on his toes.

He loves drama, banter, and being the most unserious person imaginable. Deflection is one of his core tenants. Gabe intentionally treats things with a certain joviality to undermine people's attempts at getting to know him, being vulnerable, or otherwise riling them up. Kill them with kindness in the most annoying way possible.

Plus, he never grew out of the 'knows everything at 15' disease. Symptoms include pretentiousness, undue stubbornness, an unjustified ego, and a penchant for looking down on others with different perspectives. Give him a creative outlet and he thinks of himself as the next Scorsese. His magnum opus will finish the world... if he ever gets started on the damn thing. Sometimes he wears earrings, sometimes he doesn't. Sometimes he's wearing a red jacket, sometimes it's black. But if he's on the case, then he's always bringing his patented rose-tinted glasses. Gabriel stared into his own, terrified eyes. Tears rolled down his face washing away the splatters of blood across it — blood that wasn't his own. When he looked down in his hands he learned that they weren't his hands. They belonged to a man much older than him. He could see the callouses under the lacerations and viscera he desperately tried to shove back into his torso. It was a lost cause. The man's eyes moved again, looking at the feet of an obscured figure. When he looked up a blade was awaiting him. As it swung down everything went black.

For years Gabriel's parents — and the specialists they took him to — thought these visions were night day terrors. Through countless therapeutic sessions, that cater both to his mental health and understanding of his quirk, they made no progress. It wasn't until his 8th birthday that they believed his dream was more than a dream. And by that point...

It was too late.

He had been kidnapped by Trinity, a serial killer who killed in threes. A man who was so afraid of death that he performed a ritual to ease his aging, warped mind. He would abduct a grandfather, an uncle, and a boy no older than 10 — none of which related — only to subjugate them to the same fate he was terrified of. It started with the old man, the adult, and finally the boy. By the time Trinity finished his ritual, he was already losing himself to death anxiety.

On this blessed day, a hero arrived. There was a single casualty, a fatal injury (which the man survived), and then there was a Gabriel who had escaped unharmed. He hasn't peered into the future since.

The world was ending.

Doomsday, The Apocalypse, whatever you want to call it — it happened. And unless Oliver did everything in his power to save the world, it was going to happen again. Taking up the mantle of hero, he started his training. He grabbed the Katana that his grandfather kept in his library.

A weapon wasn’t enough. Training wasn’t enough. The butterfly effect is overblown. You can make massive changes to the past and not change a damn thing about the future. You can change who marries who, whether or not someone lives or dies in ten years, but if you’re going to stop the end of the world, you have to think on a cosmic scale.

The first step was killing his classmates.

They were all part of a psyop, a plan to brainwash Oliver into mundanity. They had already worn his mind, body, and soul. Until The Captain, he truly believed he wasn’t a hero.

It didn’t take long to prove him wrong. One by one his classmates fell. And with tears in his eyes, Oliver begged their corpses for forgiveness.

A pile of bones in the most literal sense. 

Standing at the height of a five-year-old, he wears oversized ragged clothing that smells like garbage. Fortunately, by constantly smoking cigarettes, he can drown out the scent with a lesser evil. On the bright side, it makes him look cool with any of the side effects that flesh and lungs would suffer. 

As a spirit, he manifests as a fist-sized blue flame, completely absent of heat. When he possesses his corpse, two flames appear where his irises would have been — an involuntary sign that he's home. Can't even pretend to sleep because everyone will be knockin' on the side of your dumpster asking for spare change.

Lastly, his voice is deep and gravelly. While the rest of him hasn't changed since he was five, his voice continued to change with his age. Maybe, it's a reflection of his inner identity. Maybe, it's because his bones are old.

Hugh was a dumpster baby. 

He was born to a homeless woman who didn't want him but couldn't afford to get the morning-after pill, let alone an abortion. She didn't know who the father was. Life was a messy, drugged-up blur. And had she thought the baby was alive when it was 'born' she might have felt bad about the affair. Instead, she didn't know and she didn't feel anything until the very end. 

No one ever found Hugh. No human found him. He was raised by rodents and treated like one of their own. Keep in mind, this was before quirks — there was a series of miracles that led him to be fed and free of disease. The lifestyle would eventually wear on his body. Once he turned five, he met his cold, bitter end in the same dumpster he was thrown in. 

And then he came back.

He looked at his body from a third-person view, not questioning what had happened, and simply stepped back into it. This time, he woke up all bones. It'd take a few years for him to learn about quirks and how the world changed. It was a dramatic shift. Apparently. But to him it was the same old same old. A lesson he quickly learned was that even if the world is flipped upside down, no one is going to take care of you but yourself. 

With age came wisdom. Hugh moved beyond his selfish individualism and opted to change the world in the ways he could — one stomach at a time. He's a modern-day, undead Robin Hood.

He can float a few feet off the ground and move a limited distance from his corpse. By possessing his own dead body, he's able to interact with the world gaining touch, smell, and taste.

That's what Kei is at a glance. For all the friendliness he exudes, he just can't seem to fully relax when he's around other people. Maybe it's the fear of doing something wrong in their presence. Only when Kei knows there's no danger to his wellbeing does he truly calm down. Kei is a short guy with a stocky build and bright yellow eyes, the only real oddity with his appearance being the cross-shaped pupils that’s a minor clue to what his quirk involves. His hair is unruly, bangs held back by the headband he wears so they don’t block his eyes. A toothpick can always be found held in his teeth when he’s not eating or sleeping, having made a habit of chewing them to prevent himself from biting his lip. Faint scars can be seen on his bottom lip from when the nervous tick used to be a bigger issue.

Clothes-wise, he dresses more for comfort than style. Outside the uniform he has several hoodies he wears out, and jumpsuits when he holes himself up in the workshop for hours on end. Even in uniform Kei keeps his tie loose, he’s not a fan of constrictive clothing. Cuts and scrapes are no stranger to the boy either, he sports bandaids on his person more often than not.

Kei wanted to be a hero once.

In a world as dangerous as it was, wanting to help in some way just seemed like a natural reaction to him. His older brother was the same, and in fact held values befitting of a hero: kindness, bravery, perseverance. He had a cool quirk that could propel him to the top and be an inspiration to all. Kei wished to be as amazing as he was.

He doubled down on his studies in middle and high school. Despite his weak quirk and small stature and tinkering nature, despite all the people who didn't believe him, what mattered most was having the knowledge and intuition that would get him in the hero department in university. At the end of the day, it was the instructors who had the final say on whether he was good enough.

Kei's priorities changed when his class was attacked during a field trip.

They were trapped; surrounded by monsters crafted by the villain holding them hostage. One closed in on them and Kei, in fear and desperation, placed his hands on the enemy and pushed his quirk as hard as he could.

After the event, he realized he didn't want to become a hero after all.

But he still wanted to help somehow.

So his focus shifted to gear instead, fine-tuning his craftsmanship into something he could take pride in with extracurriculars and online courses. He learned fast; built things that he still uses to this day. His work was recognized by real heroes.

Kei didn't want to be a hero anymore, and that's okay.

He was able to enrol in Japan's most prestigious university anyway.

Kei’s quirk allows him to regenerate liquids and fine grains using his hands. This ability, while simple, has many applications: refilling a glass of water, topping up a fuel tank, unlimited milk, you get the gist. His quirk works fastest with direct contact with the substance, and weakens the farther his hands are from the source.

With concentration, Kei can even use his quirk on a source from a distance so long as he's touching something that makes contact with it. This began with holding a glass to refill the drink inside, but his power has grown to the point where he can use nearby puddles to flood an area by touching the ground beneath his feet.

As a side-effect, he can sense the components a substance is made of once he makes a closed connection with it. Due to this ability, Kei can target these specific parts instead of the substance as a whole. In this way he can bypass the drawback of requiring exposure to the substance to replicate it at the cost of its integrity.

He can only duplicate what's existing, and he uses more of his energy the thicker the substance is. His Quirk eats at his blood sugar so overuse results in symptoms of hypoglycaemia like lightheadedness, fatigue, and anxiety. Direct exposure to the substance is mandatory if he hasn't encountered it before, so he can't duplicate dangerous substances like acids and toxins without risking his own life. Sensory overload is also an issue when he can sense everything connected to the surface he's touching; concentrating on what to use his Quirk on and what to avoid can overwhelm him if he's not careful.

Sunil Thapa is Rahul's late father and a former Hero who operated within New York. As an adult, he changed his surname (Ruther) to his birth name (Thapa). He could transform into a tall, white rabbit with quick feet and strong kicks.

Carmen Claudia Clemente De La Cruz is Rahul's late mother and a former gearmaker. She owned De La Blues, a shop where she created and maintained hero equipment. She only operated on the field when they needed a technical expert in non-combat situations. She could create blue diamond constructs.

» Gauntlet

Tanaki Yagi is Rahul's adoptive guardian and Sunil's best friend. He owns Heavy Hands Hero agency where Harecules worked until his untimely passing. His fist saps people's strength and makes it his own, temporarily making opponents lanky and thin. Taught Rahul how to fight.

» Abuela

Camila De La Cruz Calderón is Rahul's grandmother and Carmen's mother. She is quirkless and spent most of her life running the house and raising her children. Sold home-made crafts in her spare time as a source of extra income and a passion project. Keeps her late husband's final craft on her nightstand next to a photo of him.

Rahul uses his skin to transmute organic carbon into black rabbits with blue eyes. He knows where the Dust Bunnies are as an extension of his proprioception. Rahul can summon a bunny from his skin or another, pre-existing bunny but must be touching carbon. As an extension of himself, the bunnies act on conscious and subconscious desires.

They can communicate information to Rahul and between one another through eye contact. When destroyed, their memories return to Rahul where a second, black Thalamus processes the information.

DRAWBACKS

» A resource-dependent quirk is reliant on the resource and the medium. Deprive him of carbon and he cannot conjure Dust Bunnies. Damage his skin and interrupt the process.

» Overuse dries the skin, leading to redness, cracking, and bleeding. The worse his skin, the more his speed decreases. If pushed too far, Rahul can render himself immobile.

» A single hit turns a Dust Bunny into a puff of smoke. If you destroy too many bunnies it will overload his second Thalamus (awareness). You can aim for a war of attrition or create an opening by destroying them en masse.

A fighting style using a base of Muy Thai and Wrestling adapted for on-the-go hero work. With an emphasis on striking and using takedowns to throw opponents off-balance, Rahul avoids prolonged grappling and battles of attrition. Add a few rabbits (not a hare, but people can't tell the difference) and you can do the impawsible.

Having a fundamental understanding of hero gear is part of the job. Communicating with the experts and mitigating any mishaps when on patrol is necessary. Rahul focuses on practical, multi-faceted equipment.

A satchel containing his daily essentials. Includes but is not limited to his cellphone, various forms of identification, hand sanitizer, nail clippers, lotion, deodorant, a spare toothbrush, and a tiny tube of toothpaste. No one's seen him smoke but for one reason or another, he carries a zippo lighter.

When Rahul transferred to UA University, he applied for a provisional license. With his previous experience as a sidekick, Rahul starts his third year as a full-time student.
