oh baby, that's what dreams are made of

adjusting to university life has proved a nearly insurmountable task for ayumi.[break][break]

her time back home was a peaceful one. the community was small, only 700 people altogether, and cohesion was born in the hearts of people who grew up with each other, who lived with each other, who bought from each other, and who saw each other as equals. in the hallowed hallways of u.a.u., ayumi can't help but feel suffocated by the constant, irrepressable power dynamic inherent to every interaction. someone is always better than her, someone always knows it, and someone is always trying to make sure that she knows it, too. she's always on a different level, looking up at the people who trained for this work for the majority of her lives. in all respects of the word, she's a newcomer. there's no getting around it.[break][break]

then again, isn't human life a newcomer to the history of earth in the first place? this fact has never felt so true until ayumi dares to sit on a campus building roof and stare at the dark tapestry overhead.[break][break]

she considers the history of the universe in the span of a day. if she considers that the big bang would have occurred at the stroke of midnight, earth would have only formed at 4:38:00p.m., the moon would have shattered into itself at 4:48:00p.m., unicellular organisms formed at 5:55:00p.m., 10:53:00p.m. marks the rise of multicellular life, and human beings would have only stumbled into the world at 11:59:56p.m., only four seconds before the end of the day. they are all newcomers, lonely in the universe, looking into the stars and wondering if anyone else is out there, if, maybe, they came into existence before the clock struck twelve as well.[break][break]

it's silly to feel so comforted by such a bleak timeline of the existence of everything, but ayumi does. sitting alongside the door to the roof, staring up at the sky, her black hair cascading down her shoulder in loose rivers of ink, she does feel comforted, like maybe she's in it with everybody else, that maybe she'll have a community of newcomers to life at u.a.u. too, just like she did back home.[break][break]

Emi felt like she was hitting her stride since enrolling. It took a while, but between some successful patrols, making a few more friends, meeting a boy, and even just the progress on her quirk, her confidence was the highest it had ever been. She had even decided that instead of just getting food on campus and heading to her usual spot, she would leave the campus to grab a few bento from a place recommended to her.

She may have been feeling herself today, but old habits die hard, and she liked to either eat lunch with her roommates or in a secluded spot that was never occupied. Unfortunately, this was such a day that she would be forced to eat alone. Unperturbed by this, especially on such a lovely day, she would make her way towards the building that was her usual spot, but instead of entering, she would move to a secluded area, and with her quirk, she would leap up, landing on the roof. It wasn't a space cut off from students, so there was no need to worry about getting into trouble. She just liked having a space where she wouldn't have to worry about being judged by the volume of food she needed to eat daily. With seven bento boxes, it was quite a spectacle to watch her eat. Walking around the corner, she would be talking to herself, "The shrimp, chicken, beef, or veggie first? All look so good and I ca-" upon the sight that she wasn't alone, she would freeze, her face turning a deep red as she burned with embarrassment over such a critical misstep. She was like a deer in headlights, unable to find her voice or even address the stranger properly as her anxiety spiked to its maximum.
