Cold and aloof at first glance, Mako does not inspire feelings of comeliness and friendship in many people back at school. She's very content with sleeping in the back of the class rather than socializing with anyone. She does so not because she's lazy, but rather because she's tired. Has to ride from home to the Academy and back every day, and sleeps very rarely, having to catch up. Her driving force is her siblings, whom she loves very much and has to take care of, in the absence of mother and father.
Another big thing about Mako is that she is very self-reliant. She does not want to burden others with her worries and grievances, and usually powers through problems on her own. It is very difficult for her to ask for help from others, especially people she does not know. Because of this trait, Mako learned to do many things by herself, and has the conventional skills and wisdom that would put most mothers to shame.
Despite the tough exterior, Mako has a few weaknesses to herself. She likes cute things, but keeps it a secret, as to not let people give her odd glances. The girl is aware of her less-than-pleasant look and demeanor, and tries to wear that label with a degree of pride. She also is a great fan of swimming and anything exercise. Superhero work she does not give too much thought about - her going to the academy is because she has these powers, and because she thinks she can hit a good job vacancy once she's done studying.

Most features about her seem sharp, from shoulders and elbows to the way she looks at you. Her teeth are also sharp and triangular - a residue of her quirk. Smells of salt and sea water. Wears a shirt that appears almost too small for her, not really covering her bellybutton, the sleeves not reaching her elbows. Also, a pair of black kendo pants and black-white sneakers. Everything besides the shoes look as though they've been well-worn, perhaps even made for a different person. Goes to school with a backpack made of brown leather. Judging by how the thing looks like, it is pretty expensive... or was, 30 years ago or so. General impression is that of a stray cat, or a delinquent.

DHojirozame Mako was born to her mother and father, Chihiro and Reijiro Hojirozame, both of whom were patented heroes. She was the oldest sister, followed by two more - Sakaki and Koyomi, as well as the youngest of the litter - her brother Tomo. The two were good and doting parents, until they died doing their duty saving people from a doomed natural gas tanker off the western shore of Japan. The tanker was caught on fire and exploded into a million pieces when the faulty systems finally gave out. Not even their bodies were found. Mako was 7 back then, and her siblings were too young to remember anything, which was good for them, probably.
Mako's grandmother, Sadako Hojirozame, took care after the kids, for a while. She was very old, but kind-hearted. From a young age, the girl had to help her out taking care of the house as well as her siblings. The woman was too frail and slow to be able to do everything, but she was a pool of folk knowledge. She taught Mako how to cook, clean, sew, and even treat certain illnesses with nothing else besides some local herbs growing in a small back garden. Oh, gardening was a thing too that she taught. Life was pretty hard though, as the woman's pension was not enough to fully support four children. They had to cut corners. From an early age, thus, Mako knew what poverty was like.
She had to help out somehow. Mako undertook most of the chores and was like a second mom to her sisters. Grades plummeted, of course, as she was more concerned with all the other troubles she had back home. Her one window of relief from the hustle was swimming. Like her parents, the girl was a great swimmer form an early age, and was part of the school's swimming team. Her teachers recommended her to take it up professionally, but Mako's family never had enough money for a coach.
When Mako was 16, grandmother became seriously ill and bedridden. Within a year, she died, and was buried at the local cemetery, in the cheapest of coffins offered by the government. They couldn't afford much beyond a simple gravestone, and a few flowers Mako planted nearby. Now, she was the oldest in the family, to take care of her siblings, who were 11, 10, and 9 at the time. Mako found partial employment at the post office, delivering parcels, mail, and adverts to mailboxes. This took most of her spare time that she did not spend with family, and still does. About the same time her mutation started kicking in. It was first seen during a swim class, during which she literally grew a tail, got covered with scales, and finished the laps 5 times faster than a human would. Emerging from the basin, Mako scared quite a lot of people, including her teachers.
Not particularly keen on keeping a subpar student who turned out to be a quirk-user too, the school quickly referred Mako to the Hero Academy, as soon as she graduated. They even gave her passing grades on all tests for her to succeed and be out of their hair for good. She didn't mind, the place seemed nice than the backwater school she had to go to. And, from what the girl heard, Heroes got a better stipend, better pay, and better work. She just had to be smart about it, lest she ended up like her parents. And so, with the new semester starting, class 1-B would find a new student sleeping at the back of the class. A shark-girl!

She grows a fin on her back, a shark-tail, and two extra fins on her elbows. Her teeth become sharp and angular, she grows gills to breathe underwater, and gains an uncanny ability of sensing people and catching their scents. Even when in her human form, Mako gets to enjoy some of the partial benefits, such as being able to have a mean bite, being on average faster than their regular human companions, and being able to breathe underwater, when not exerting oneself. When transformed, Mako is capable of swimming with shark speed, her skin becomes tougher, and she herself becomes faster and stronger, her bite - even scarier, and being able to swim and breathe unhindered underwater, no matter the situation.
QUIRK DRAWBACKS:
During transformation, Mako's body takes drastic changes, growing fins and all. If she does it while wearing clothes not suited for it, those clothes will be ripped apart, or entangle her, if too tough.
When transformed, Mako cannot breathe regular air very well. If overexerted, or if the fight happens in an environment with rare air, she will feel dizzy or even lose her breath.
If exposed to heat and hot sunlight when transformed, for an extended period of time, her skin will start cracking and bleeding. To prevent this, Mako would need to keep her skin wet by dumping water on it.
