She was still in a ton of pain, but it was the kind of pain that would force her to do things. Showing up at Kei's workshop, she'd look like she just crawled out of bed with her oversized nightshirt, pajama pants and slippers. She had her hero suit in its case, and looking like she was tired. Dead tired. "Hey, Kei," she calls out, moving to set the case down as she set her hands down on the table. "I got your message, they're in a working state?" She had been looking forward to this for some time. These were going to be some heavy duty pieces of gear that was either going to shatter her like a mug being thrown off a skyscraper, or give her that edge she had been desperately needing. Kei Hada

Another day, another piece of gear finished.

This was the norm for Kei. With his demeanour and work ethic being as it was, people have been coming to him asking that he create something for them. It's reached a point where he's always working on a request someone made. Honestly he wouldn't be surprised if the amount of work he had was on par with his actual class projects.

In either case, Jun was the lucky candidate for today. He was fetching her gear from the cabinets on the far wall when she came in, his focus remaining on the item as he addressed her. "Hey Jun! Yeah you came just in time, I was just about to bring 'em out!"

And that's exactly what he did. Kei pulled what could only be miniature anchors from the cabinet, which were attached to a length of cable wrapped in some winches. Carrying one in each hand, he walked back to the table where he would've heard her voice from. "We just need to do some testin' to make sure they're easy for you to use. We got a trainin' area we could go to-" he paused when he saw her state.

Hair a mess. Still wearing pajamas. Bags under her eyes. She didn't look good at all.

The grin he was sporting just moments ago shrunk. "Hey- you okay? We can totally reschedule if you're not up for testin' today. You look like you could use some sleep."

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Jun shook her head, reaching up to wipe at her eye as she looked at the hair band on her wrist, thinking a moment. "I've been bed ridden for two weeks, I need to do something productive." She started to pull her hair back in order to put it up in its signature ponytail, looking up at him as she gave him a reassuring smile. "I'm good to go ahead and do the testing." This was far from the truth, but she wasn't going to let Kei know that. She was still not in the best of shape due to the incident, her skin itched and burned whenever she moved a certain way, and she was pretty sure if she breathed a certain way it'd cause everything to spiral out of control yet again. Buuuut, she had been looking forward to this for a long time, and she wasn't going to stop right at the moment of triumph. "You got someplace I can change real quick, right?" She reached over to pick up her suit, trying to remember where they kept those changing room again. Kei Hada

So like. He... he couldn't have heard her wrong, right? That was impossible right? Which meant Kei was now more alert, evident in the way he widened his eyes. "Two weeks?!" Surely no simulation in the university would render someone bedridden for that long, so something else must've happened.

Jun seemed ready to move on though, already asking for the changing rooms without explaining further. Pointing at what she requested in the corner of the room was all he could do while recovering from his mental whiplash. "You can change in there."

If she went in that direction he would place the winches on the table before turning around to face the lab door. The change room would give her ample amounts of privacy- it's just a courtesy from him at this rate. "I placed your gear on the table. When you're ready, you can grab 'em and we'll head to the training section of the labs for the tests." He paused, worrying his toothpick before he added. "While you tell me what happened?"

It was a long shot but he didn't want the discussion to just end there.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Jun slipped into the changing room, first popping open the case to reveal her suit. It was still uncanny to see, especially the newer features on it. The original, on top of being yellow (which she had to raise so much hell to get fixed), didn't have anything fancy outside of a special material to keep her warm in winter, cool in summer, and was effectively rain proof. The latter wasn't properly implemented, though, which led to her freezing in a watery environment for too long. The newer design had a special built-in harness for this specific piece of gear Kei had made, with modified materials to make it more waterproof. "I was on a trip at sea. Things went wrong." She'd not linger on the incident, changing out in about a minute. Upon leaving the room she'd make sure the belt was sufficiently secured. "Anyways, it's not important. I'll be fine." She'd step over to the table, picking up the first winch as she tested the weight of it. "Heavier than I anticipated...but I can make it work." She'd move it to her side, clicking it in place and making sure it was secure. What she wasn't voicing out loud was the anticipated pain this test would give; her body weight was going to be evenly distributed across the harness, which meant her chest would get some pressure that it didn't need. Picking up the second winch, she'd smile over at Kei, nodding. "Lead the way. I'll figure it out as I go." As she started to walk she'd click the second one in place, taking the anchor in hand and studying it. Kei Hada

And there was the miss Kei expected but didn't want all the same. Though to her credit, she did elaborate on slightly more than just I don't want to talk about it. "A sea trip? What were you doin' out there?" Maybe she wouldn't explain what got her incapacitated, but there's a bit of hope in learning why she was on the water in the first place. He could make that the more important part than her getting injured.

"But yeah, we can start movin'." Once Jun was ready, he'd open the door for her before leaving as well, taking the lead again once they were both in the hall. "The gear should work like your chains do really, you just gotta get used to the anchors at the ends. Sorry if they're too heavy by the way, we can reduce the weight if they throw you off too much." Man, maybe he was getting stronger without realizing again. The course was making him do a lot of heavy lifting.

The duo would eventually reach the end of the hall to a set of double doors, which Kei pushed open to reveal the other side; a room much larger than the workshops they passed, with obstacle courses and mats for spars. The only real difference between it and the training rooms the hero students would usually use were the drones that flew about to clean the place and act as aerial targets.

He stepped aside so Jun could view the room as well. "Usually we'd have a designated section to test in but I think it's just us here, so feel free to go anywhere you want! Red drones are targets and avoid the green ones- they're just puttin' things away."

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... As much as Jun hated keeping things from Kei, the details of her escapade were going to go unknown. She had no intent on hashing it out to Yaoyao, which also meant Kei was going to be in the dark. She hated doing that, but it kept her sane. The less she thought on it the better. "For now we'll see how they operate. Who knows, maybe I'll adapt to the weight and a reduction will throw me off?" She gave Kei a smile, rolling her shoulders as she entered into the test chamber. It was a nice area, she couldn't lie. She'd start to scan the area, seeing what the best course of action would be. "Alright, red is open season and green are our friends. Got it." She'd grip one of the anchors in hand, yanking it and tossing it out towards one of the target drones...only for the end to drop roughly three feet away. She looked down, testing the mechanism briefly as her face started to turn red. "Right, ah helpful if I disengage the stop on it...haha, the guys in the animes really make this look easy and simple!" Of course there was a mechanical stop. How else would a constant length be possible without it? She'd reel in the chain, promptly disengaging the stop and with the anchor in hand she'd immediately throw it back out, this time with much more force. Pain shot across her face for a moment, but the anchor met it's mark as it latched onto a red drone; it'd start to fly away, starting to pull more and more chain out. "-Right! Gotta get used to- WOAH!" She'd flip the stop again, and almost immediately the chain went taunt, pulling her up into the air. Kei Hada

Yeah, okay, she wasn't going to speak further on the subject after all. Kei was bummed out by the lack of information but ultimately it was her decision on whether or not she wanted to explain. It was likely personal, probably traumatizing if it made her bedridden for two weeks. He could understand not wanting to relive those memories.

Perhaps a little too well.

So it was back to the experiment instead, his journal and pencil at the ready to write his findings should he have any. He appreciated Jun's positive attitude regarding the weights of the anchors, but couldn't help but pull a face when she tried and failed her first attempt at throwing one out. "Yeeeah. Should've mentioned the stoppers on the winches sorry." He wrote the reminder down for good measure.

The second throw was much more successful; she even hit a red drone in the process! The support student raised a fist in the air. "Nice shot!" The praise was extinguished however when the drone was flying away with the anchor attached to it, which eventually took Jun with it. His face morphed to panic. He didn't think she would latch on to the thing. "Oh my god!"

Kei was quick to close his journal before he started running after the hero student. "Release the stop but don't do it all the way! You can control the speed the line extends and shrinks!"

There would still be some growing pains, but it'd be easier to say the least. Well, the fear of flying would still be present, but at the very least when comparing both places, at this point in time when the drone steered her into a padded wall, while the force itself was not enough to hurt too terribly bad, her injuries flared up regardless and caused her whole body to tense up, a cry escaping her lips. A moment later she'd be draggled along the ground, and another unfortunate feature about her suit was she felt everything. Despite the pain, her brain was looking for a solution. Reaching for the other anchor, she hit the release and yanked it free, tossing out the second chain to a passing pole, and yanking on it one good time felt it catch. Hitting the stop on the second winch, she suddenly felt her body being pulled upright, back on her feet and partially suspended between two points, legs bent as the entire left side of her body felt as if it were on fire. "Get...get..." she pointed up to the drone, body wanting to collapse to her knees solely to process the ordeal she just went through. Kei Hada

You know, Kei tried his best not to intrude on these sort of exercises, save for the verbal instructions on how to use the gear they're working with. Part of the experiment was testing one's ability to correct themselves after all, so his job was to analyze a person's natural course of action, not to involve himself in the fray. The one doing the exercise should get themselves out of problem they're in, so they sharpen their minds and gain the muscle memory of utilizing a new piece of gear.

But between the cry over a hit that shouldn't have hurt much at all, earlier knowledge that his friend had been stuck in bed for two weeks (two weeks!!!), and the fact she was actually asking for his help, he understood that they're done with experimenting. He should've not gone ahead with it when she said she was bedridden really but it was too late for that. At least there was an advantage on doing this sort of thing in a training facility.

As a student in the support department, Kei had control over everything here.

The cross-eyed sophomore whistled for the tethered bot's attention. "Renegade!" Yes, he knew the names of all the drones in the room. He had a year to familiarize himself with them. "Loosen up! We're done here." On command, the red drone stopped pulling away, and instead it gently flew to the floor so one of Jun's lines were no longer pulled taut.

They still had the other to take care of though. Kei looked to one of the green droids in the air. "Pristine?" It turned to him and blinked. "Could you untie the anchor on the pole and bring it here? Carefully." Pris made its way to the rope and deployed two arms to work on it, eventually taking the second anchor to join the first on the ground.

Only when it did that did the support student run to Jun and crouch down, hands hovering over her body if only because he was afraid of hurting her further by touching her. "Jun? Are you okay? Do you want me to take you to the infirmary?" Firing off questions as fast as he did was probably not benefiting her but he couldn't help it. He was worried.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Once all the tension was out of the lines she'd drop to her knees, taking in slow and steady breaths. She didn't want to go back to the infirmary, but she did need to rest and take a little time to recuperate. Burn wounds were different than being cut open, and she didn't need to worry too much about reopening a cut or ripping out stitches. She was pushing herself a little too hard, though. Even if every fiber of her being wanted to power through the pain and continue onwards. Though Kei's questioning did a pretty good job of convincing her to press forward. She'd first slam the reel first on the right side, anchor barely clearing the pole as it set back in its recess. "Fine," she says through gritted teeth, slowly getting to her feet. "Just a tap...will bear with the pain." She'd hit the reel on the second winch, taking in a deep breath. It would definitely take a little time to get used to the new equipment, and her body clearly was not ready for anything too intensive. She couldn't give in just yet, could she? She looked around, eyes catching a wall that she could rappel up. Her legs protested as she started to walk, but she just had to do one thing. "I might have to practice on my own after today, really familiarize myself with the controls. Gotta learn how to manipulate my weight to my advantage in the future..." Kei Hada

Yeah, Kei expected that. Stubborn as always with wanting to push herself beyond her limits despite the pain she was in. He knew her long enough to see that's just how Jun was, hard on herself and thinking she wouldn't amount to anything no matter how much of a lie that was.

Less expected were the bite behind her words, with the support student flinching as she solidified them with a resounding bang of the first winch. How could he respond really? She seemed adamant on continuing after the ordeal she just went through, and he felt he was on hot water already with his pestering. The last thing he wanted was to upset her further.

So upon her declaration that she should train alone next time, all Kei could give back was a defeated "Okay." He gave her some space by pouring his focus on the the red drone instead, banged up but otherwise fine. Only a few button presses were needed for it to be back in the air and on its merry way. The hero student didn't seem to need its services anymore anyway.

Kei then turned to watch her curiously as she headed to the wall, eyeing her walk for any potential limping but not commenting on it. "But for now you'll just have to stick with me for a bit longer yeah? Gotta make sure these things are perfect before you try to get used to them," he added with a lacklustre chuckle. It's about all he can do to assure her that he'll always be around if he needed her.

Her core was trying to lock down on her, and so she'd have to move quickly if she wanted to get a feel for how this went before she went catatonic. She felt bad for snapping at Kei like she did, mostly because in his words she heard her own demons. She wouldn't have any kind of limp, but it was clear as she moved her arm back to rocket the anchor up to take hold of any place that there was something wrong and that she was in pain. Once she saw the connection she'd immediately hit the reel, adjusting her body to rappel up the side of the wall. It was not a fun experience, and one that was awkward considering the placement of the winch, but in feeling the harness pull on her and how if she altered her stance just enough, it was doable to pull off. If only she didn't slip and smack her face against the wall. It didn't hurt as bad as the earlier incident, but it still wasn't pleasant. She'd pull herself up the rest of the way in shame, flopping there as she panted. "You know, maybe this was a bad idea," she says, finally allowing herself to speak the words and put away her wounded pride. "I'm...you know, electrical burns are not easy to work with, especially if you died getting them...wanna try this again sometime next week?" Kei Hada

Kei may not have said anything while the hero student was making her move, but the worry in his eyes couldn't have been more evident if he tried. She was definitely in pain that didn't originate from just the exercise and she was pushing through it anyway. And it only got worse when she reeled herself too fast and her body slammed directly on the wall.

Jesus Christ he felt that impact all the way from the ground where he stood. It took everything in him to not immediately call out to the girl again.

So he waited for Jun to catch her breath, mentally counting down to when he felt it necessary to call for a medic. Only when she spoke did he finally let out a sigh of relief- only to hold it again once he processed her words and his eyes went wide. Electrical burns? Dying from them?

Kei really wanted to comment but her relenting was more important than continuing the testing. Especially since she survived death at one point? "Yeah that works for me," was the response he eked out, voice squeaking with barely contained panic. "We can give this another go next week."

Next month more like it but he wasn't going to mention it.
