"Thank god," Jiji grunted, and Rei could feel him roll back in his chair. "For how many people come here in a week, you think there would be less, but no. Of course not."[break][break]

"Four is four," Rei amounted, shaking his head. "I would have expected there to be more given the type of people around here, but, I'm not complaining."[break][break]

"Young people these days," Jiji added on as if Rei hadn't said anything, which caused the young librarian to raise his brows slightly and roll his eyes. "no respect for literature. How many people in this town aren't thugs, Rei? How many of them actually study? Tell me."[break][break]

"Trust me, I would like to study. That's why I'm here- y'know... for the money-"[break][break]

He heard Jiji shift to glare at him.[break][break]

"Alright," Rei sighed in response, putting his headphones back on as he heard Jiji eventually amble away back to his office. Tagging was heinous. Tagging was awful. Tagging was bullshit. He hated feeling those rips in those books, the tears in their covers and the roughness of their pages, and he wishes he knew who did such a hateful crime to these poor souless souls who's life was only to ever educate others. Throwing those books out was like putting up a beloved baby for adoption. Absolutely inconceivable![break][break]

The narrator of the computer he was using directed him towards the registration of books, Rei grimacing as he took them away from the list. He hated it. He hated it.[break][break]

Then, he felt the desk he was sat by be tapped, Rei taking his headphones off, Jiji with another quip on his lips. "By the way, there were some police cars in the area earlier. Nothing on public alerts yet, but just keep your ears open, yeah?"[break][break]

The librarian thought for a moment after nodding. Had he gone after any gangs recently to injure them so badly to elicit such a response? He didn't think so. The heroes didn't bother with small-time talk in this area, only the policemen- and even then it was only interest in the innocent, not in gang-on-gang wars. Something else might have been going on. Sighing, Rei fumbled for a moment before finding his cane, making sure he was ready to duck and find his boss at any moment should someone come crying in. He sincerely didn't know what anyone would want with a library, but there were certainly some weird kooks in this day and age.

He had heard it all before. "Hey, what are you doing with those security cameras?" "Hey, why are you throwing cell phones into the middle of the street?" "Hey, why are those cell phones exploding and blinding drivers?" Petty nonsense that he did mostly well to tune out.[break][break]

What couldn't be turned out was the young, upstart vigilante and his henchmen that had chased Levi into the alleyway around the corner. God, it felt like he ran for miles. Felt awful. Worse than the push, honestly.[break][break]

"Listen, I don't know what you were doing to all those cell phones, but acts of villainous crime such as that must be punished! You're coming with us!" Literally textbook. If he had a dollar for every time he heard a 'hero speech' as poorly crafted as that, he'd have at least, like, $27. He slowly rolled across the boxes as the shimmering liquid metal around his right arm began to pool under his back.[break][break]

"Listen, fellas... I don't want any trouble... well, any more trouble. So I'm just gonna... ya know... get going."[break][break]

Perfectly on cue, as it had always been before, Skylark kicked into gear. The liquid nanotechnology seeped out of his jacket, anchoring him to the ground as it speed forward. Levi's prone body torpedoed through the brute's legs, granting freedom to the alleyway as tendrils of Skylark brought his torso upright. As his legs connected with the pavement, he once more broke into a sprint. Surely they wouldn't follow, right? Not this time, right?[break][break]

"Stop! In the name of Blunt Force Trauma and the Brute Boys!"[break][break]

Was that seriously this guy's name? Was he sleep-deprived when he made it up?[break][break]

It didn't matter. Levi needed to make an escape, and quick. To his right, a small crowd of people gathered to inspect the wrecked cars in his wake. From behind, the sound of police sirens filling the air. 3 minutes, 41 seconds. Not too shabby. And to his left...[break][break]

Hell itself. A library. Dead trees and dated technology awaited him through the threshold. Yet, provided with limited options, hell would have to suffice.[break][break]

His break into the Library was clean, neat. He was certain that the thugs wouldn't have seen him come in. Well, almost 90% certain. The silence of the library was too deafening to actually try to run the math. His sprint slowed as he sauntered instead to a nearby desk, quickly pulling his hair into a ponytail to throw off his pursuers. He tapped the desk softly as his walkie-talkie sputtered to life, offering free translation at the cost of his vocal cords.[break][break]

"Hi, I'm here for a... book? No... LIBRARY CARD..." He almost shushed himself as his excitement at remembering what people did in antiquated places such as these took hold. The walkie-talkie adjusted to a whisper. "A Library Card. That."

The dissonant whine of police sirens alerts him to unwelcome company before this person runs into the foyer and down to his desk, Rei momentarily pausing in his typing to listen to them. They've been running- they're out of breath, which is something that immediately sets him on edge. Who runs into a library? Everyone knows libraries aren't for running- or for talking for that matter. He would have much preferred for them to shout so he could snap at them to shhh and leave for being a poor, impulsive sport and disturbing him.[break][break]

"A ...library card?" Rei sounds far too inquisitive at that question as he hangs his headphones around his neck, a brow raising as he looks in the voice's general direction. Who asks for library cards these days? Just moments ago he was under the impression that no one really cared about books in his town. That isn't their real voice, either. There was something else to it. Even more suspicious. "Do you have an I.D on you? Or any type of verification?"[break][break]

There's shouting going on outside- and there's a lot of it, by the seems. God, he hopes it doesn't come in here, because he really doesn't have enough patience available today to deal with much else after having to rip books. Given that Jiji hasn't followed him up on what's happening out there, there shouldn't be a problem, but he's still curious. "What's going on out there? Someone spike the punch at a club again?" At that weird and out of place sentence, Rei shrugs. "Happened around here a couple times. Still haven't caught the perpetrator."

Levi's mind wandered briefly as the scent of old books filled his nostrils. What others may have described as pleasant and cozy, Levi considered putrid. The scent of decay of a thousand forests all so that people could do with a building what the average person could do with their phone.[break][break]

"Hm? ID?" He paused a moment, a blank stare on his face as he stared back at the Librarian. Was that even real? Did people really have to trade in their IDs for a library card? What a crooked deal! You can't drive a book! He spoke, a brief slip as his real voice filtered through his throat. "Shit, does Japan even have a DMV?" His eyebrows widened as he became aware of his English, trading his vocal cords into the walkie-talkie once more. "Uh, I do technically have an ID yes! Just unfortunately not here. With me... Can I trade you something else?"[break][break]

He patted at his jacket as the Librarian's question hung in the air. He could bum the guy a cigarette maybe? With any luck, it'd light the tree graveyard ablaze. "Uh, yeah. Something like that. Some guys were yelling about blowing up stuff and started chasing m.. people. Started chasing people around. Real bad scene, yeah?"[break][break]

As if on a stage that was actually a sitcom adapted from a movie that was once a book, the Library doors swung open. And on the other side?[break][break]

God, they really need to workshop that name. Said his inner voice.[break]

His free eye darted across the room in a shoddy attempt to find anything he could latch onto, to take control of. Libraries could be a death sentence for a man like him. "Hey Librarian, where uhh... Where would I find the section on not getting my teeth kicked in?"

Rei doesn't react much in terms of responding to the foreigner's foreign words- in fact he felt a little satisfaction in realising that something wasn't right about the situation at hand. He shifted slightly, stare still unfocused on the man- of course, he can only look in the direction of his voice rather than making direct eye contact. If anything, it just seemed like Rei was staring right through him. "Of course we do," Rei replied in exasperated English- he has an accent, but he's clear enough to understand without needing to repeat himself. "And no, you can't. I need some form of I.D so I can come after you if you hurt my books."[break][break]

At his next sentence, the librarian sighed and shook his head, deciding not to question whatever the hell everyone outside the building was getting up to at that moment. As long as it didn't involve him or Jiji, he didn't give one single shit. His entire disposition and attitude said "leave me the fuck out of this" as he turned back to his computer, about to continue talking but only jumping in fright at the response of the entrance doors swinging open. What the hell! Those doors were heavyset oak and thick in weight, who on earth had an attitude stewed in sewage enough to force them open like that?[break][break]

So the law was chasing this man. Frankly, Rei wished he had found another librarian to bother, as whoever had come barging in had pissed him off more than this random person in front of him had. Thankfully he had enough sense to shush them, something Rei appreciated greatly.[break][break]

Somewhere to hide? Whatever, as long as it got these goons to go away. Rei focused for a moment to determine where exactly he was, before pointing behind himself and to the left. "Bookcase under the stairwell." He said in English. "You can pull it out and hide under it if you like, I don't care."[break][break]

Regardless of whether or not these random punks would come up to him or not or the foreigner would continue talking, Rei would proceed to put his headphones back on and continue working.

"Oh shit, English!" Levi exclaimed in his natural voice as he learned two important notes today. The first was that the Librarian could speak English, expanding his capability for multitasking as he wouldn't need to focus on the walkie-talkie anymore. The second was that Japan had a DMV! He could get a proper ID! Save that one away for later Levi, might come in handy at some point![break][break]

The man seemed almost hesitant to point out a decent place for Levi to hide before his arm trailed off to a nearby bookcase offering refuge. "Thanks, you're a real one! Also will this work?" As Levi turned to make his grand escape, he flicked one of his most recent business cards in front of the Librarian's computer: Plain white with barely embossed words exclaiming "Losing Control? Get CTRL!" "I'm probably maybe really gonna need that library card!" He shouted as he ran in the pointed direction.[break][break]

As Levi made his break to the back area, Blunt Force Trauma and his goon squad made their break to the Librarian's desk. "Hey! Are you helping that guy?? Our boss is gonna want a word with him!" Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum broke away from their 'leader', turning over books as though Levi was hiding under them as BFT delivered yet another cliche 'you're coming with me' speech. "Listen, if you're his ally, you're comin' in too. Can't be too safe these days! Just answer me straight and we're good!" His men chuckled, a laugh that implied they might not actually have their hero's licenses just yet.[break][break]

"Hey Library man! There isn't a case of books back here! Just shelves! What am I looking for??"[break][break]

Levi's bad timing couldn't have been any worse as the silent members of the goon squad shifted their gaze, locking onto the sound of Levi's voice. Blunt Force Trauma grinned, reaching his hand out for the Librarian's collar.[break][break]

If someone came in here, I honestly didn't see or hear them. If I had known there was something going on in the area, I would have dipped ages ago."[break][break]

Oh for god's sake. Was he really risking his neck for this random foreigner he had never met before? What the hell was wrong with him? He really needed to stop being nice to people who didn't deserve it. "Alright.. case... case... If I were a case of books in a library, where would I be...?" Levi began pulling books from the bookshelf under the stairs, forcefully setting them on the ground with the assistance of gravity. Skylark began pooling herself around his hand, liquid metal reaching out to each book as an extension of his body to aid in his search. "Is it behind the books? Ooo! Maybe one of the books is like a secret lever!" He scanned the books, finding the biggest, heaviest one before pulling it away gently...[break][break]

Before watching gravity relieve the book of its position, dragging it to the ground with the others. "Stupid librarian, how am I supposed to hide if he can't even..."[break][break]

His train of thought broke as a small, skinlike dagger pierced the book next to his head. "Eeep!" He turned, staring down BFT's two goons as they rounded the corner. The smaller of the two leaned low to the ground, his skin molding into his hand as another dagger appeared. "Frankly... that's disgusting."[break][break]

He had to think fast if he was going to escape. Libraries were woefully lacking in tech, and that which they did have wouldn't suit him much purpose. He also couldn't necessarily go firing a sniper rifle in a library, lest he immediately give away his position to every cop in a two-block radius. Still... Skylark began forming in his right hand, a thicker and stockier appearance than usual as a shorter gun appeared in his hand. Remnants of the liquid dripped to the floor, coating the soles of his shoes to compensate for friction as he aimed the double-barreled shotgun behind himself. "Yeet!"[break][break]

The air-powered blast from the shotgun was nearly silent, save for a soft 'pop'. The force, however, had been enough to propel Levi forward, granting a much-needed headstart on his escape through the shelves. A blast of air impacted the pile of books left behind on the ground, exploding a stream of paper into the air. Neat, extra cover![break][break]

Brute Force Trauma offered a smile as the Librarian seemed to succumb to his fate. "Playin' dumb yeah?" His fist balled up tight, the faint smell of steam filling the air as two vents seemed to appear on his right elbow. "Ya know, they don't call me Blunt Force Trauma for nothing! You're coming with me scum, like it or not!"[break][break]

The screaming sound of what could only be described as a 1940s steam whistle released from the man's arm, as his fist flew effortlessly through the air toward's Rei's face.

Rei sighs for the umpteenth time today at the man's words lamenting over the choice he had made earlier in the day; to come into work, or not come into work. He could have stayed in his warm and cozy apartment, watched the rain drops dribble down the stained window, see as these idiots went rampant in the streets trying to catch this foreigner, made a cup of hot cocoa... but he needed the money for his Uni courses. But he could have gone on a paid leave for just an extra day over the weekend... but money...[break][break]
