It still wasn't enough. After having suffered loss after loss, both at the Sports Festival and during the heroes and villains exercise she had worked towards bettering herself. Improving not just as a smith, but as a hero and warrior too. Her workshop was being cleaned, so she had rented out a small classroom for the afternoon, taking all her schematics and papers with her and scattering them haphazardly across the room and walls. The kind of weapons she could make were good, great, amazing even, but that wasn't enough for someone who bore the Ando family name, much less Masao who was the inheritor to the Paragon armor. No, her weapons needed to be the best of the best. Both the spear that she was working out how to make for herself, but also any requests she might get in the future. Her weapons should be second to none, bringing justice and peace to society. Looking over one of her schematics for a katana she got lost in thought for a moment. She could really use a second opinion. Even though she didn't like to rely on others for help, she was also aware that there was some value in getting the thoughts of a layperson. Patting her pocket to get her phone she paused as she felt nothing there. She must have left it in her room by accident. Just then, someone happened to walk past the classroom. Ever the opportunist she spoke up. ''You there. Would you care to join me for a moment? I could use your opinion on something.'' She didn't recognize him, maybe he was on the hero course? ''I am Masao Ando, a third year student on the support hero course.'' She bowed her head politely. Although she was uncharacteristically stoic and emotionally distant, her words had a hint of kindness to them. ''May I ask your name?''enma

Maintain or die. Those were the times given to Enma when told to maintain his grandfather's sword. He didn't believe his grandfather would kill him truly, but maybe he'd be dead to the old man. Or maybe he would, who knew? With a carefully-wrapped Raiju tied to his back, the antisocial boy made a trip down to the Support department in search of some choji oil. It was traditional and normally hard to find, but it just so happened there were enough connoisseurs in the department that he could grab some with a simple transaction. The person he established good rapport with knew to make it quick so he could be in and out. Thankfully, most students were focused on their work and concerned with not making anything explode. Enma ran himself through the same mental cycle as he entered the department to retrieve the oil. Get the oil, pay the money, get out. Destressing would include oiling the sword gently with a quality cotton cloth and peaceful silence. That wasn't happening today, as he suddenly felt his whole world shift as his attention was caught by a stray Support student. Normally, he would dread the conversation and would run at the first opportunity. I could use your opinion on something. Now if it meant seeing what that student was cooking, Enma wouldn't mind. It disrupted what he mentally prepared himself for, and he wouldn't smile, but he was ready. "Enma Arashi. Second year student on the hero course. What is it?" Plain, simple, to the point. Masao Ando

This one didn't waste any time. Perfect, if his manner of speech was always this efficient then she would surely get a satisfactory answer out of him. ''Arashi-san.'' She didn't recognize him, he probably wasn't the type to go looking for attention. ''As you can no doubt see, I am in the middle of a project.'' She gestured at the various papers and schematics around them. ''A weapon series, robust and flexible enough to cut it in the line of hero work. Mere guns or bombs will pale in comparison to these blades.''She couldn't help but notice the wrapped Raiju on his back, but she didn't say anything. ''Forgive me for not providing you with the proper context.'' She bowed her head gracefully. ''The Ando name is intrinsically tied to heroism and weapon making. We've been a family of weaponsmiths and heroes since the very genesis of the Heroes Association, hence my current field of study.'' She picked up a schematic, a rough sketch for a katana with a fiery red blade and handed it to Enma. ''Put simply, what are your thoughts on the design? Don't hold back, say anything that comes to mind. I can't help but notice that you appear to already be familiar with blades yourself too.'' She glanced at Raiju once more. She gave him some time to look over the schematics while she started cleaning up and gathering all the papers she had scattered on one of the desks. ''The materials required to create the weapons will be arriving next week. As you can imagine that makes my rather spontaneous request quite urgent in nature.''enma

At first, Enma was not looking forward to the unplanned masking he'd have to attempt in an effort to not rub a fellow student the wrong way. However, Masao brought a pleasant surprise to him. When entering the room, he was fidgeting and rigid while she continued to show plans for something that would be a dream for him. Clutching the wrapped Raiju, his eyes widened and his cold face sharpened and elongated in expression. "Ando-san, I hadn't made the connection. I am pleased to make your acquaintance."With a respectful bow, he continued hearing the pitch for what was coming. She was part of a crucial resource to Hero society. As someone who wanted to become a hero, he looked into important players and was attracted to the weaponsmiths that could help maintain Raiju...or provide a new blade once its Journey was complete. "I'm no smith, but my family has provided their own weapons for generations...since the time of samurai. One must always remember: mind the integrity. A sword is nothing without it."Nodding, he leaned forward and looked at the design as if he had forgotten Masao was next to him. Scanning it thoroughly, he checked for the different parts of the katana to make sure it came together just right. "Do you know what it means to make a katana?" Looking curiously over at Masao, he clutched Raiju tightly once more. With twitching expression, he shook his head and returned to a more matter-of-fact face. He recalled, momentarily, the advise of his grandfather but didn't want to lose his hard shell. "I think the design is fine, Ando-san."Masao Ando

''There is no need to be so formal.'' She put on the tiniest of smirks to appear more casual, but to most people her expression hardly changed. ''I simply felt it necessary to provide you with the proper context pertaining to my request.'' She was even a little surprised that he was so formal, most students were a lot more lax about it. Ylva Riis could learn a thing or two or hundred from Enma Arashi. ''I see.'' Her eyes lit up a bit, now this was a rarity. ''Weapons hold significance in your family too, perhaps for much longer than it has in mine. What a pleasant surprise, I did not expect to come across an expert by happenstance.''It wasn't uncommon for her to be ridiculed by the occasional comment that swords, spears, axes, they were all archaic and relics of the past. People who believed that weapons forged from steel couldn't possibly match up to guns, bombs or vehicles. To meet someone such as Enma, someone who much like herself was dedicated to the weapons of old wasn't something she saw every day. In a way, even though they had just met, it made campus feel a little smaller, in a good way. ''What it means to make a katana?'' She blinked her eyes and pondered the question for a moment. ''I have made countless weapons. I was being brought into the workshop before I was old enough to walk. Making weapons is a serious matter, each one of them has a soul and a story.'' Or at least that was what her parents had instilled in her. ''I'm curious about the answer you were looking for. What does it mean?'' She waited patiently for his answer, curious to hear the essence of his truth. ''Actually, seeing as you are familiar with swords, Arashi-san, I would like to make one more request of you.'' She bowed her head politely. ''If you could test this sword, this new model that I'm making, I would be in your debt.'' She would star to collect the papers. ''Naturally, you would get to keep it too, should it spark your interest.''enma

Blushing at being reminded of his formalities, Enma gave a shocked expression before toning it down and nodding. He listened intently as she related to the bond to weaponry that their families had. The Ando family were much more famous, but values persisted with or without fame. It was nice for the swordsman to find this connection, almost softening up his emotional armor. Waving his head and hand nervously, Enma reacted nervously to the compliment on his supposed expertise. "No, I dare not say I'm an expert."In some ways, he held a competent understanding. Though, he was likely only a learned observer of the things that mattered in his life. Raiju was an important sword that was put on the Journey. When Masao inquired on what he was leading to, Enma inhaled and exhaled squarely. "Every weapon you make will take its pound of flesh. That blood is on your hands as much as it's on the hands of those that wield it. It's inevitable, but it's the same pact that a wielder makes by picking up the katana."The weapons don't create the violence, only their wielders and proprietors do. Enma seemed to imply the permanent bond that is created between the creator and the use of their creation. "As long as you respect that rule of weaponsmithing, it will show in your craft. That is what my grandfather would say about those that made katanas in the past." Tempted to unwrap Raiju to allow Masao to appreciate what he carried, he was shocked by the offer to carry a blade personally made by her. "I would be honored...but I must be clear about my quirk. If I wield your blade, it may not look like it once did once it is in my hands for some time." Nervous about sharing the details about the Journey, he held Raiju close to his chest. "It hasn't changed much...but would you like to see my grandfather's blade? I haven't oiled it yet..." For the first time in his life, Enma looked forward to a conversation. Masao Ando

For as tough as he looked, he was surprisingly humble. Looks could be awfully deceiving, not that he looked, or like he had bad intentions, but she would have thought someone like him might have been eager to accept compliments about his skill, not downplay himself. It was a welcome surprise, Enma Arashi was growing more and more interesting by the minute. She smirked, a rarity for someone like her. ''Your finesse with the blade will speak for itself I'm sure.'' She was used to always being the most tense person in the room, but something about his reaction made her feel at ease. She listened intently when he finally pulled back the curtain on the question he had asked her. It seemed so obvious in hindsight and she felt a bit embarrassed for not having touched on that in her own response. ''I see. That was an insightful response, Arashi-san. You have convinced me through words alone that you do not carry a sword merely because it's some passing interest you have picked up along the way. You have thought much deeper on the implications of what it means to be an armed hero.'' She paused, glancing down at the floor for a moment as she considered whether she should say anymore. ''My objective is to make the best weapons that this world has ever seen, but that is just step one of my plan. With my blades in the hands of the right people, peace and justice can be brought to this world, and all blades that are in the hands of villains will be seized for the sake of the greater good. That is why I too, train to wield a weapon. The blood is on my hands as much as my client's, but I need to be there on the front lines.''And who was to say Enma Arashi couldn't be one such person? The deal seemed beneficial to her. If she gave her blade to a complete amateur she would hardly be able to get any helpful data back, but someone who was trained on the other hand? He could become her most promising customer yet. For Enma, he would receive a top of the line sword, the best that she could offer, all for the low price of nothing. His response puzzled her, did his quirk affect swords? ''How so?'' What a fascinating twist of fate. If anything, it made her more eager to craft something for him. ''This is related to your powers?'' She looked down at Raiju, then smirked and bowed her head politely. ''The honor is all mine. If I can make something that is befitting of your power, to find a suitable wielder for a sword, it's a weaponsmith's greatest pleasure.''enma

Masao struck Enma as an a bright mind of great potential beyond being another of the Ando company. Names meant a lot, but it was an important lesson that the individual meant the most. Thinking between Papa Arashi and Enma's father, their stark contrast, he was certain that this lesson was true. From the clean design of the blade to the keen nature of how she spoke, Enma was thoroughly impressed and happy to be invited into such a venture. To his own expertise, he had known that some details could only be understood through application instead of the theoretical. Many swordsmiths were trained warriors, but likely to simply have a deeper understanding of the necessities in making a blade. "I can assure you, my finesse with my blade can bring a lot to the table for a mind like yours." Oblivious to what meaning could be contrived from what he said, he continued on seriously. Setting his sword on the table and undoing the satin cloth that masked its appearance, he would reveal Raiju in its pristinely maintained glory. It hadn't seen true combat, but even if it had, his quirk kept it looking like new. From the pitch black, starless night polish of the sheathe to the pale blue wolf chasing its own tale in the tsuba, it was a work of art. Slowly opening it, the less-than-shiny, intentionally pale blade was like soft moonlight. Nothing too bright, nothing harsh or unpleasant. The beauty of a katana. "I appreciate wanting to be the best at something. The better you are, the more control you have over it. It's a good feeling to be skilled. By gracing me with your craft, I would happily offer myself as a training partner so that way we may see the frontline together in due time." Nodding, Enma felt his words getting away from himself. There was almost a smile, but as quickly as it came it had faded. Unnerved by the prospect of his quirk being observed, he didn't like the showboating his father did to market his sporting goods. He didn't like the idea of attention, but if it was for someone who could appreciate its nuance, then he wouldn't mind. "My quirk has a delicate, harmless front. But really, it turns any blade I wield into a portrait and an indomitable, undying force. You needn't worry of it befitting my power, but I don't know what lengths it will change what you give me. Still, I will make sure to show your creations the same love and respect as I show my grandfather's sword."Stepping back, he nonverbally invited Masao to inspect the sword. A gesture he hadn't ever considered before, but he also hadn't ever found someone who shared such interests with him. It was new, scary, yet exciting. Masao Ando

''You flatter me.'' She smirked, it was one thing that she got good grades and she knew it, but she had never had anyone compliment her intellect so directly. ''You've more than convinced me you're fit for the job.'' She carried on just as seriously. For once, it was nice to speak to someone who not only shared a common interest with her, but seemed to appreciate direct communication the same way she did. Some people would always ask her why she didn't smile more, why she didn't wear excessive makeup or paint her nails, and no matter what reason she gave she could never be let off the hook. She didn't feel like Enma would ask about any of that. They were here to talk about swords, and potentially open up to each other. She had already shared more with him than any other student at the school. She watched with anticipation as he undid the satin cloth. It was one thing to wrap your run of the mill sword in cloth, or put it in a sheath, but his was apparently different due to the properties of his quirk. In what way exactly was it different? She was eager to find out. ''Marvelous..'' She was practically at a loss for words at the reveal. Beautifully soft colors, and yet it had a strikingly unique appearance, like the sword was proudly announcing who it was. Not afraid to stand out in a crowd, truly a sword befitting of a future professional hero such as Enma Arashi. ''This sword, Raiju, it has been in your family for generations?'' Her eyes were practically sparkling with interest. ''Is that so? I would be a fool to pass up such a generous offer.'' And here she had been looking to train more on her own too. To get a training partner just like that? Fate was truly on her side today. ''Then surely, we shall strive to become the best together.'' She smiled, it was subtle, but it was a smile. Offering him a handshake. ''Unless your aspirations are wholly different? In which case, I will help you attain your own goals, Arashi-san.''The way he spoke about his power so carefully while remaining respectful of her own suggestions was admirable. ''A portrait, you say?'' She looked at him, then back down at Raiju to inspect it closer. ''You're kind, I can tell as much.'' All she needed to believe his words was one glance at his sword. She didn't know how much combat it had seen, but no matter how you looked at it, Enma took good care of his weapon. She put a finger down on the flat side of the blade and delicately traced the design without cutting herself. It was a good weight too, sturdy, but not too heavy to be cumbersome to wield. ''I look forward to seeing how you will shape the sword that I make for you into your own.'' She handed Raiju back to him, respectfully and carefully. A family culture centered around weapons, inherited quirks, an interest in weapons as a result of their upbringings, it was almost uncanny how many things they had in common. ''So, I can either make a sword for you, or you can commission me for one. Since you are familiar with weapons, I trust you would know how to put in a good commission, but whichever choice you make I'll be starting work on the sword as soon as possible.''enma

Sometimes, meeting new people wasn't so bad. Enma was always afraid of changing his daily routine and possibly being forced into a forced conversation. This wasn't forced, it was like breathing. Like wielding a sword, talking to Masao was effortless. Sure, there was effort in the formalities that the swordsman engaged in. However, their relatability was unlike any other he had ever experienced. To find a training partner and someone who could push him into fresh and new thought, it was exciting. "I put my energy into the things I am sure of. This, you can trust me on." A warmness and eagerness that hadn't shown for many others, the typically anxious and armored second year waited as Masao inspected Raiju. Seeing her marvel at it, it hadn't even properly been changed by the Journey. As she offered the sword back, Enma took it and felt his hand tingle. Holding it close to him, the hand holding the sheathed blade would begin to change in a rainbow gradient, appearing as dispersed colors from a light within. Happiness was glowing from his hand and it crawled up his arm and into his heart. What Enma thought as warmth was his quirk activating against his will. What was not seen was the change it made to the blade of Raiju. It was the beginning of its portrait, and the beauty of the Journey. "I want to vanquish the evil that rots our world. To do that, I must be the best. In that way, our aspirations align." Some may question what he means by vanquishing, but Enma had a harsh sense of justice. There hadn't been many good connections, maybe Masao could be a better influence than the stewing emotions that had nowhere to go and no one to help process. When offered on how he would receive her work, Enma pondered it as the colors in his hand became warmer. "I will gladly accept a sword from you, Masao-san. How it changes will be wonderful to see. I don't know how to accommodate my quirk fully, I know heroes use devices to enhance their powers or accent. But..."He hadn't noticed it until that very moment, but he looked down at the color of his hand. A circular symbol had almost carved itself into the black of the sheathe, a print of color that would signify the start of a new bond. An emblem with fire within it, simple and undefined beyond its basic display of the element. What could that fire mean? It was a staple of the sword now, and it happened before the eyes of another. "...That is my quirk. I...did not expect it to happen in front of anyone."Masao Ando

And somehow she did feel compelled to trust him. Not only was he contributing to her project, not only was he willingly wanting to test one of her weapons, but he was sharing what she assumed to be very personal secrets with her. Namely Raiju, and the nature of his quirk. Many students guarded the exact secrets surrounding their power with their life, so for him to show it to her... Her thoughts were interrupted when Raiju erupted into a rainbow of colors in his hand, and here she thought she had seen everything already. ''It would appear they do. There's enough rot in the world, change is inevitable.'' She smirked, unsure if he hadn't noticed that Raiju was changing, or if he was just so used to it by now that it seemed mundane to him. After having suffered loss after loss, Masao was starting to doubt she was cut out for the practical side of hero work. However, through Enma, through his strong convictions, his humble and respectful self and the colors of the Journey that lit the way, slowly but surely she was feeling the motivation seep back into her. She continued to listen to him intently, only blinking her eyes and looking down at his hand when he did and seemingly noticed what was happening. ''Raiju, it changed.'' She knew it would since he had told her as much, but to actually see it with her own eyes left her awestruck. Quirks were often terrifying, often deadly, but they could also be a beautiful, beautiful thing. ''Your quirk is incredible, Arashi-san.'' There was excitement in her voice that she usually couldn't express, but she dialed it back a bit when she took another look at his face. Did he use it by mistake? ''For what it's worth, your secret is safe with me.'' She took a couple of steps back. ''And I'll show you my power in return. The armor that has been passed through my family since quirks first appeared.'' She took a deep breath. The armor she was one day going to prove herself worthy of. The armor that made her Paragon. In a flash, almost like a magical girl transformation, Masao's body was covered in bright light, but just as quickly the light faded and in its place a heavy suit of armor covered her from her feet to her shoulders. She closed and opened her hand, testing the integrity of her transformation before smiling back at Enma. ''As you can see, my quirk is suited for defense, not offense. Perhaps that is part of why I create weapons.'' She walked back over to Enma and made her armor fade in the blink of an eye. ''My quirk responds to my state of well-being, so if I'm sick or hurt it is much less effective.'' She added. ''Now we've both shared a secret with each other.''enma

Embarrassed that the colorful nature of his hormones at work had simply seeped out from him, Enma tightened his grip around Raiju. He wasn't sure if the blade would change or any other part would change, as he hoped to maintain Raiju's form as much as possible. It was a loaner, so it wasn't exactly his to make modifications to. As the first big moment to manifest from his time on his own, it was shared with another in a way he didn't anticipate. It was then that Masao shared a similarly glamorous manifestation of power. Armor that appeared from beautiful light. A scintillation that bordered the beauty of a well-cut diamond. In awe, the man was speechless. It might've created a more awkward silence than he'd like, but soon his appreciation would show through. "Ando-san, it is peculiar that we both possess quirks that have a beauty in them. I do not want my enemies to see the beautiful aspect of mine, but I would like to appreciate yours truly."Nodding as she clarified important details of her quirk, Enma reached out nervously with his index and middle fingers pressed together and gestured in improvised calligraphy. A dark grey energy seeped and suddenly, an inky apparition would write upon the table with the words, "There is more to my quirk than what is good for a sword". "My body allows me to paint the world as long as there is a canvass, but the power of my quirk is reserved for important things in my life."To the matter of Masao building something that Enma would bond with, he had no doubt in his mind. The intimacy and budding friendship of their passions had been electric to him. "I await the day I can see the finished product. When should I expect to see it? And when are you next available for training?" Hand on the table, the calligraphy would slowly fade, dissipating into nothing. Masao Ando

Her quirk itself wasn't exactly a secret as it wasn't the easiest to hide, but she had deliberately given away one of her biggest weaknesses on how to weaken the armor to make him feel a little better. Besides, if they were to be training partners, friends, or what some might even call friendly rivals, she felt it important that he knew just in case it ever came up. Still, while she never hid her armor, she never really used it to show it off either. ''Is that so?'' She let out a soft chuckle and couldn't help but feel a little embarrassed, unsure of how to process such high praise. ''That is the first time anyone has ever said that my quirk possessed beauty. You flatter me.'' She understood why he didn't want villains to see the intricacies of his quirk, but perhaps that made sharing a moment like this all the more special? Now that she was keeping such a precious secret, one she would take with her to her grave if she had to. She wanted to communicate as much too, but for fear of coming off too intense she held her tongue. Wait... When did she ever care about what others thought? She watched closely as he used his quirk to write on the table. ''Not only a swordsman, Arashi-san is an artist too.'' His power is reserved for important things, such as his weapon. It would be more than an honor to have him use his artistry on a blade made by her own hands. ''Truly, a beautiful power in its own way.'' And she meant it too, even if she wasn't the best at communicating emotions. ''I can have the sword finished by next week. With the materials coming in soon, shaping them to a weapon worthy of your name should be a trivial process.'' She was exaggerating, but she wanted him to know that it wasn't a problem, and that she took this commission very seriously. She glanced at the calligraphy as it disappeared like a stain of breath upon a mirror. ''As for training, I can begin tomorrow.'' She took out her phone. ''Perhaps it would be beneficial for us to exchange phone numbers?'' She tried not to show that she was nervous, but she was. She never really asked people for their phone numbers, but logically it made sense if she was to train with Enma Arashi going forward. ''I have a workshop here on campus, I will let you know once the sword is finished.''enma

Something they could relate on was the genetics that gave history to their inherent quirks. A beautiful detail that the more they spoke, the more they unfolded these uncanny similarities. An armor had been passed down generation to generation for the line of smiths making up the Ando family. The inks of history's blade-wielding poets had been passed down similarly, making the Arashi family a clan of swordsmen. Contrasts and similarities worked in unison to bond them. Enma found beauty in things, less so people. Maybe he could find beauty in another soon enough, but he could at the very least appreciate the radiance of Masao's quirk. "Ando-san, it shines with hope and the armor glimmers with wonderful intricacy. That's as much poetry as you'll pull from me today." With a smirk, the swordsman bowed so formally. She had advised he needn't be, but it felt second-nature with how he was raised by Papa Arashi. Being complimented back made him bashful, which made him bridge his fingers and hold Raiju closely to his chest. "I'm not much of an artist, but I have practiced my calligraphy." Listening to her intently explain the process of creating the sword, he nodded with a refined excitement, like a pleased businessman. Once he knew they could start training immediately, his face went stoic. "Then you better be a morning person. I start my first session at eight in the morning." Leaning forward with intensity, he looked up at her with his crimson eyes. "Be prepared and come stretched. I will not go easy on you." Leaning back, he gave her a final smirk and a head nod. He didn't process that she wanted to exchange numbers. Almost like a glitching computer, he froze completely. Lost in his own head, the thoughts were clear as day. A girl wants my number? He was no child, but Masao brought that innocence to the surface that had never been addressed. "Why, yes, my phone. My phone number. Yes, of course Ando-san. Indeed." Pulling out his phone and fumbling it with shaky hands, he showed her his number off of his phone. Masao Ando

What was it like to be raised among swordsmen and poets? They shared a common interest, but she couldn't help but be fascinated with his mindset and the way he carried himself. She wanted to know more about him and not just because he was a client getting a sword commissioned. ''You truly have a way with words.'' So much so that it left her at a loss for words for once. ''If your skills with the blade is as seamless as your poetry I have no doubt that you are a formidable sparring partner.'' She didn't correct him for once when he bowed formally. After all she was raised on similar formalities so in a way it felt like home. ''Is that so?'' She smirked, feeling a little thump in her chest as her green eyes met his crimson own. When was the last time she had actually been excited to spar with someone? ''Fortunately I am a morning person. And I would expect no less from you, Arashi-san. The feeling is mutual. If we want to reach for the top then there is little sense in holding back.'' Even though she wasn't much of a fighter yet, perhaps that was about to change. This timing, her meeting Enma Arashi, it couldn't be more fortunate. This time she was the one who was completely oblivious of the implication when it came to exchanging numbers. Most of the time she didn't give out her number, mostly because she didn't have many friends, didn't go on dates, and usually told people she was making weapons for to meet her at her workshop. With Enma it simply made sense to exchange numbers if they were to train together frequently. ''Perfect.'' She smirked, typing it into her phone before sending him a simple text that consisted of an emoji with two swords crossed. ''I sent you a text so that you have my number in turn.'' She put her phone away and picked up her stack of papers and schematics. ''I have to get going for now, but I will stay in touch.'' She bowed formally before walking towards the door, stopping in the doorframe to look back at him. ''I will look forward to crossing swords with you tomorrow, Arashi-san.''enma
