When Kozue puts his mind toward something, he fully commits. Whether it's completing a personal project or stepping in to help someone, Kozue isn't the person to give up, often to the point where it becomes detrimental. He'll forgo food, sleep and his physical health at times in pursuit of whatever goal he's pursuing. He'll often find himself engrossed in his work and projects, with being lost in thought to the point where he is unaware of his surrounding, mumbling to himself under his breath. He's the type of person to keep to himself, which combined with his other tendencies often lead to him being perceived as anti-social. Despite this, he's friendly and kind toward folks when his attention is in their direction, cracking jokes and generally doing his best to treat people with kindness.
The main exception to his general rule of kindness is directed towards assholes who take advantage and hurt others. If he perceives someone as being mistreated and blatantly slighted, he's quick to shove his nose in, often willing to throw hands when needed. Part of him sees this, as him trying to do good for others, which isn't untrue. But what he struggles to admit to himself, is that he has a lot of anger, and when faced with people like that, he sees it as a good excuse to let it out. He wants to protect others and keep them safe, but at the same time, he can't let jerks just be jerks. He's stubborn to a fault, seeing the world very flatly from his perspective, with a real trouble in looking from another perspective. He's very much someone who struggles to focus on the big picture, preferring to direct his attention toward what is right in front of him. Overall, he feels like he has a lot to prove, which continues to drive him.
Growing up, Kozue had relied on looking on the bright side of thing. He grew up learning to love the little things in life, and the small moments. He's experienced in making the most out of anything, with culminated in his forte in engineering. Starting off by learning to fix small things around the house, it grew into a passion the more he tinkered. A sense of control he otherwise lacked in his day to day. He could engross himself in his little world, experimenting until he had created something entirely new. Kozue never knew his real father. He often tells himself that he doesn't really care, but that's untrue. His father cheated on his wife, with a woman he had met in Korea. That woman was Kozue's mother, Hana. Kozue's father was gone before the boy was even born. Kozue was born, looking just like his father, much to the chagrin of his grandparents. Hana loved her son, but as a single mother things were hard. During Kozue's early years, her parents would help with the child rearing, doing what they could to help their daughter raise her bastard son. And things went mostly well. During these early years, Kozue was encouraged by his grandparents to become a good man, to help support his mother and them by getting a good job. These expectations weren't held by his mother, but she didn't say much regarding dismissing it.
One fall afternoon, tragedy struck. A villain who was making their escape after robbing a bank, ended up causing a large car pile up along the highway. Two of these victims were Kozue's grandparents who unfortunately passed due to the injures from the accident. Hana began to work more, with it being her way of mourning the loss of her parents. She had no safety net. She had to provide for her only remaining family. Her darling son.
Kozue now entering middle school, began to mourn in his own way. Wanting to help in any way he could, he spent his time after school doing repairs around the house. What started off as minor repairs on appliances and and doorways, slowly built into a love of tinkering. Hana would often come home from work, to see her son sitting in the dining room, a random appliance in piece before him, as he had taken it apart to study how it worked. He was mostly self-taught, using the internet or the library whenever he got stuck. He felt happy in a way he hadn't before. Something he truly loved.
While in his home life, he was seemingly in a groove, his school life was a stark contrast. Being a foreigner, at least in appearance did a lot to give the other kids reason to pick on him. He did his best to fight back, but he often wasn't believed and was often outnumbered and overpowered. Kozue found himself frustrated constantly, feeling like he was walking on eggshells whenever he was at school. Whether it be online, in class or after school, Kozue was being bullied was a constant. Not wanting to worry his mother, he lied and said school was going great. No point in letting her down.
Eventually, as he entered high school, he reached a breaking point. One day while he was acting as an errand boy for one group of his bullies, he ran into one particular nasty jerk. The singular bully tripped Kozue, who hit the ground hard, spilling the drinks. As the bully laughed, Kozue snapped and began to wail on him. Not only was this bully in particular all talk, but this was a one on one. And the raging Kozue kicked the bully's ass, leaving him with a nasty burn. This lead to Kozue getting into trouble as there was clear evidence of what Kozue had done. The burn mark on the bully's chest. He was suspended for a week, before returning and finding himself isolated by his peers. Rumors swirled around, with most of which calling him a psycho. Others tried to pick of Kozue, but he swung back much harder now, leading to further isolation, as the rumors were seemingly proved true.
As they neared graduation, talk of entering the world of heroics became the most common conversations he'd hear. Kozue himself, thought the idea was glamourous, and upon graduation, and with his mother's blessing, he left Korea to head to Japan. There the goal felt obvious, to enter UAU and study to become a hero. In this day and age, that was the best job, right? You could protect people and be a celebrity. As a professional hero, he could support his mother fully, allowing her to retire early. But life wasn't that kind.
He failed the entrance exam three times. Despite now living in Japan and working part time, he always seemed to fail the entrance. While he might have had better luck if he applied for the Support Course, he insisted on the Hero track, leading to repeated rejection. It wasn't that he wasn't good, but he was average. Nothing special. Not really someone who deserved to go to the top hero school. He was just normal.
Frustrated, one night Kozue witnessed a robbery. Feeling pissed off a recent rejection, he stepped into it, acting as a hero the best he could. This event ended up shaping his trajectory.
