In'ei was on deploy in full force. Diego hadn't even been apart of the organization the last time they were mobilized all in one go and as a result he felt uncomfortable. These were all his trusted colleagues, but his mind was elsewhere. Would Maxima send Luci down there? It wasn't something he didn't want to think about and because of his reluctance to go in with his usual persona he was assigned to the recon and Kumojiki would be coordinating the movements of the Nomu down there with him. Yaeko posed as a regular doctor treating every who needed it and chi-chi had a separate assignment. [break][break]

Deployed in their respective undercover alliances Diego would split up from Shurin under the guise of "Wanting to make these chumps pay" but in reality he was quick enough on his feet to move quickly without being detected and resilient enough to put up a fight. If he died here he would be sure to take out as many threats as possible. That was his role and he'd play it til the very end but...for now he put up his fists and grinned there was some sort of portal or teleporter in front of him and it was active. One moment she had been in the middle of the great battle, fighting to protect her students and bleeding out at the foot of a teleporter. Had she died then she would have died with lots of regrets. Most of all, there was one person she regret hurting. Fortunately, as fate would have it she didn't die, and was even saved by a villain. The problem was that... Well, her savior was a villain. Once Mummy had healed her, as if she was playing some kind of cruel joke on her, she pushed her through the teleporter, leaving the creature alone to do whatever she wanted with her students.

Due to the way she was shoved through, rather than step out all heroically, Lucille came tumbling through the teleporter, rolling backwards over herself until she came to a sudden stop. ''That little...'' She whined, rubbing her lower back as she slowly sat up. She inspected her midsection again, finding that the injury really had been healed, but there was a clear tear in her hero suit where she had been clawed. ''Thinks she can do whatever she wants.'' She sighed and stood up, dusting herself off as she still didn't realize she wasn't alone.

It wasn't until she stood up and was about to step through the teleporter that she thought to look behind her.

''Waaah!''

She immediately took a couple of steps back and raised her fists at him. ''D-D-Diego! What are you doing here? Are you working for the Elementalist?'' Getting over her initial shock she was prepared to throw hands if she had to.

The shimmering of the teleporter grew brighter and Diego grew more anxious. The sight of something green was enough for him to get moving as he dashed forward and swung only to stop inches from the head of his...[break][break]

A cold sweat broke out as he tried to regain his composure, but he was clearly not only was Luci the last person he expected to show up but he almost struck her which was something that made him sick. It brought back those feelings of the day when she died. [break][break]

So he remained silent, eyes wide as he observed her. She was in her hero costume, so she was clearly here as part of the raid and as much as he wanted to protect her he couldn't reveal his role. She broke the silence raising his fists in defiance and his expression got more serious.[break][break]

"I'm stronger than you." With a more stern tone than his usual bravado he didn't even raise his own fists. If she wanted to wail on him it would be fine, better than her getting hurt. As he was about to turn and leave, a faint beeping could be heard, and he turned to see that someone or something had placed an explosive device on the teleporter. "Idiot, cover your head!" He shouted as he dashed at his maximum speed and dove at her to get them both out of the way of the explosion. As he landed on the ground, making sure she could use him as a cushion, he looked over at the destroyed teleporter.[break][break]

''Y-Yeah? So what? That doesn't mean I'm going to let you get away!'' Besides, hadn't he technically snuck up on her and had ample time to strike her down? Maybe he was waiting to get the jump on her by activating his quirk, but then why not do it now? She knew his specialty was fighting at close range, so if she took flight that would make things much harder for him. ''Huh?'' She hardly had any time to react before the bomb went off, rescued at the last second by the guy she loved.

The guy who had betrayed her.

''Are you okay?'' She blurted out as she landed on top of him, her hands on his shoulders. Once she realized they were a little too close for comfort she quickly sat up again and looked in the direction of the teleporter just like him. ''The teleporter!'' She exclaimed in horror, running over to the wreckage. How was she supposed to get back to her students now? Stellar, Vox, she had to try to contact one of them to let them know what had happened, but for some reason her device was out of range. Was it because they were under the ocean? She turned to face Diego again, entering her battle stance once more. ''Did you do this? Did the Elementalist tell you to capture me alive? I'm not going down without a fight!'' The fact that they were stranded hadn't dawned on her just yet, as she was still a little overwhelmed from everything that had happened in such a short span of time. That, and she had to expect the worst from Diego, even if he was a former friend and her crush.

Everything about his organization forbade contact with people in your former life since the chance of compromising your cover went up like crazy. There were people formerly in In'ei who were forced to leave Tokyo after making a critical mistake like this but he really couldn't help it. He wasn't fired up like she usually saw him he was more...calm. At least on the outside as on the inside he felt like he could scream. She was RIGHT THERE and he couldn't say or do anything.[break][break]

"I'm fine I-" he turned away so she couldn't see the intense redness of his face they hadn't been that close since Luci would insist as teenagers to take photos together so they would always have memories of each other. She was just as naive back then, as if he could ever forget her.[break][break]

He still had a job to do. "Elementalist? That chump? I'm here to kick his ass from daring to send those monsters on MY territory." He grinned ear to ear. "If I was here for you, I would have already beaten you; I'm stronger. I've ALWAYS been stronger." He felt himself straining and a confrontation seemed almost inevitable.[break][break]

A creature with multiple eyeballs began to glow red, and rapid footsteps could be heard heading in their direction and without even thinking Diego immediately grabbed Luci, throwing her over his shoulders just like old times and ran as fast as he could through this maze like area, ultimately finding a door that wasn't sealed and that led to a small storage shed. He would squeeze them both inside and set her down as he waited for the creatures to move on only to turn back and see her close he was to Luci. [break][break]

All the missions he had taken were nothing like this. This was his biggest dream and worst nightmare all at once.

He was here to beat up the Elementalist? Maybe the villains weren't as united as they were led to believe? ''Yeah right! I've been training, you don't know what I'm capable of now!'' She huffed, throwing a couple of shadowboxing jabs at him that would turn into real punches if he dared step any closer. That was until they were spotted and she froze up mid-pose. She stared back at the eyeballs as she thought about what to do next. Activate her quirk and take flight? Was it a better idea to run or fight? Before she could make a decision it had practically been made for her when Diego scooped her up over his shoulder. ''H-Hey!'' She called out, feeling her face light up with embarrassment at being carried like this.

But then it was like the feeling of danger vanished all at once as she remembered their first year-up exam together. She had used up her quirk to make temporary shelters for civilians, but had no energy left to run from the danger. That's when he scooped her up just like this and ran faster than she had ever seen him run before.

As he squeezed them into the supply shed she held her breath, waiting for the creature to pass them by before she even thought about saying something. Her face only grew redder when Diego turned to look back at her. ''What do you think you're doing?!'' She whisper-shouted as she pouted and punched him lightly on his chest in protest. ''I don't have time to be hiding away with you here, move!'' She insisted, finally taking a moment to catch her breath after she had thrown a few weak punches his way. ''...Where are we? How did you get here?'' She asked, having regained her composure as she tried to get a clear picture of what they were doing.

He let out a sigh of relief as the danger passed. He wasn't concerned about himself; he just had Luci around, and he felt like he was back in school with her, always protecting the sunshine in his life. It was hard not to view her as the girl who had half a quirk and was always optimistic even when things were tough.[break][break]

He didn't like messing with his cover, but Luci was so persistent, and her punches made him want to pass out. Not because they were strong but because he felt so vulnerable at that moment, and it certainly didn't help that she smelled good. He clenched his fists as hard as he could so he could focus on the present. "Are you stupid? I just saved your ass, you'd be in big shit without me Phantasm- LUCI!" He basically yelled this, causing the light of the eye from earlier to briefly come back and scan the room. He held his breath and gestured for Luci to do the same, and once it passed, he exhaled again.[break][break]

"I don't have time for this I need to s- I'm going to destroy whatever this idiot has planned." Great save as always, Diego. He would open the door slightly and peer out, seeing no one in the hallway before he squeezed past Luci and stepped out. "Go home." he couldn't face her again as he couldn't hide how sad he felt saying this. "You're just going to get in my way; I don't work with heroes." He began to walk away, praying that someone would come help Luci evacuate since he had a job to do. He desperately wanted to turn around and go with her but he couldn't think of any excuse and it was clear that she didn't want to be stuck with him anyways.[break][break]

His yelling startled her a bit and she quickly duck down and held her breath, looking back at him as the monster came back their way. She missed him so much, even more so when she saw him like this. Why did he have to turn his back on heroism? Did he realize how much he had hurt her? How much she cared for him even now, even after he had most likely done so many unspeakable crimes? ''You're too loud, that's one of your bad habits!'' She retorted once the creature disappeared again.

The fact that he had called her Luci didn't escape her either. Not many people called her that, and even if they did no one said it like him. No one made her heart race this way. She let out a quiet huff as he walked past her and started telling her to go home. Didn't he take her seriously at all? He may be some important villain now, but she was a hero too! And not just some rookie! As he started walking away she followed him, speeding up and grabbing him by his wrist. ''Stop, Diego.'' She replied firmly. ''I'm not going anywhere, there are hero students down there and they are my responsibility.'' She tugged on his wrist. ''And so are you...'' She looked off to the side for a moment. ''You saved me, I'll admit as much. Thank you. But I'm still arresting you, and we are not leaving this place until the Elementalist has lost, so you are going to have to come with me.''

A flicker of annoyance flashed over his face. He was loud? "Do you know how many times your big mouth go us into to trouble?! I always was the one bailing you out." he snapped back at her; no one else could get under his skin so easily.[break][break]

He froze as she latched onto him. Anyone else would have been on the receiving end of his fist, but instead, he froze while he listened to her. He wanted her to hold on forever and never let go, but staying like this meant all of this, everything he went through would be for nothing. He dove into darkness for her and couldn't return until he finished what he started. [break][break]

After a long silence, he would gently pull his arm away and spoke to her quietly, unable to turn around. "You haven't changed." It might have sounded like an insult to Luci, but he felt his heart racing. It was the most he'd talked to her in years, and she was still the person he loved more than anything else.[break][break]

He'd turn back around, having been able to maintain his composure again. "You don't know where you're going, so if you want to keep an eye on me follow me then." He didn't know where he was going either, but just being around Luci made him regress back to their old dynamic where he put himself out in front as a shield. "If you're going to go after the guy that's causing all this then we're on the same side. I'm gonna beat him to a pulp."

She continued to look at him through the silence, giving him as long as he needed to respond while refusing to show any signs of weakness. She wasn't the same helpless little girl she was when they first met, she had grown a lot over the years, especially after her death. ''Fine, I will. You're too dangerous to be left alone.'' She huffed, following closely behind him. She had to admit, of all the people to bump into out here, she was happy that it was Diego. They were fighting for opposite teams now, but for the time being their goals aligned. Gradually as they walked, she started walking next to him instead of behind him. He was clearly making good on their little alliance, seeing as he had plenty of opportunities to attack her by now.

''Sounds like he's been making enemies left and right ever since the elemental attacks.'' For a moment, if she forgot the fact that there were killer monsters on the loose, a raging war being fought under the ocean and that they were both kitted out to fight with their lives on the line. If she ignored all that, she could almost see them being just another couple, walking together on an island vacation. As they walked she couldn't help but hold onto a grudge from their previous conversation, letting the silence hang in the air for a moment before speaking up. ''I never got us in trouble, by the way, I just speak from the heart.'' She crossed her arms, pouting to herself. ''Teach always told you to be quiet in class, or think things through before you act. "Read the room, hero." He kept his eyes facing forward as he walked, talking to her without breaking his act completely was hard enough but looking at her face made him uncomfortable. It was like looking directly into the sun but somehow even brighter than that so he needed to stay calm. ''That's my line!'' Like hell she was going to let him die either! ''You're so infuriating! And you're too proud of your speed and strength!'' She couldn't exactly refute that he was faster than her, so she wasn't even going to. What bothered her way more was the fact that he kept calling her hero, like they were strangers, like they didn't have a shared past, almost as if he was blind to how much she loved him. The thought that maybe he knew and was just stringing her along, using her feelings for him to his advantage she didn't even want to entertain for a second.

Diego, the old Diego, he had to be in there somewhere, somehow...

When he told her she shouldn't care about him she fell silent, her eyes sad as she looked at the hatch. ''How can you say that with a straight face?'' Her voice was a lot more quiet and meek. ''Of course I care about what happens to you, idiot. I can't just forget what we had like you. I'm not built that way.'' Had she not been old and wise enough to know to keep her emotions in check in enemy territory she might have shed a tear, but she could always hold that back and worry about it later. When she went down first she tried to reach out to Stellar first. There was a lot of static coming through and she wasn't even sure if her voice reached her, but she still tried. ''Stellar? Stellar! If you get this message, I have been warped away from the western quarter, there are students there and they don't have anyone who can guide them can you-'' She grimaced as the static grew too strong, turning her comms off again.

She looked to either side of wherever she ended up, making sure the coast was clear before she ushered Diego down. ''Well, at least it looks different from any other path we've tried.''

"That's what I'm good at; who isn't proud of what they're good at? I'm the number 1 villain in all of Tokyo, and once I beat that into the Elementalist, he'll get this eyesore off my turf!" He was getting a bit too close to Luci and had to ham it up to put some distance between them. This was the only way he knew how, and he had already broken her heart once; surely, she had moved on since then. She was the most special person in the world, and only an idiot couldn't see that.[break][break]

Her claims of him forgetting everything almost made him break. He wanted to cry. The feeling of a knife being jammed into his heart was better than hearing that from the one he loved. He wanted to tell her she was wrong that she lived in his mind and heart every day. That he spent his nights praying that she'd remain safe.[break][break]

So he remained silent. It took everything he had, but he did it. No bravado, no Manticora, no Blueshift. He was just Diego, shaped by his regrets and desperately in love with someone he couldn't be with.[break][break]

He smashed the panel on the door they had just come in to make sure they couldn't be followed and then closed the hatch as he made his way down. He was trying to find the words, and after an eternity of silence, he finally managed to say, "There's a bend there." He pointed to their left. "Let's go." He moved past Luci, solemn expression as he made his way down the corridors until...[break][break]

Of course, The Elementalist would have countermeasures for people sneaking around! He was an idiot for thinking this would work! Barriers rose on either side, blocking their escape, and then moved together, aiming to crush them. Diego immediately flexed his gravity and pushed against them as they moved in, slowing but not stopping them. It wasn't something he could do on his own, and since he couldn't explain the plan, he had to get the point across quickly: "The exam! Stop them like you did the robots!" During that time, they performed a combo move using Diego's quirk to stop the movements, and then Luci used her 'vomit' to make a barrier. Hopefully, she was telling the truth when she said she couldn't forget him; if she had, they would be crushed.[break][break]

She just wouldn't hug him tightly like she did back then after they passed even though he wished she would.
