While Truthteller would wait quietly to hear Antonio out, Diego found himself getting more and more irritated. He was indebted to Truthteller and all of Bansho/In'ei; they had stopped him from falling completely into darkness and understood his struggle. It gave him consistent work and a consistent place to live, and it let him watch over the whole reason he even gave up his old life.[break][break]
"What do YOU get out of it?" Diego took steps forward, clearly letting his anger get the best of him. "You get to do what you set out to do! You get to help people, protect them from what they can't understand and make the world a safer place. All while shopping there was this nagging feeling he couldn't quite shake. He had specifically chosen this day thanks to intel from Bansho that most active duty heroes would be away from the mall as they had purposely put one of their own on patrol, one who wouldn't flag Diego as a problem if they saw him and could feign ignorance in the unavoidable case. Clearly they couldn't account for everything and that was where Luci came in.[break][break]
Now that his guard was back up he would act normally until a chance arrived and he would move, in the literal blink of the eye, to get a look at his pursuer. Of course, it was her; who else would it be? He rolled his eyes and sighed heavily through his nostrils, knowing that getting Luci involved would just be trouble regardless of the intention she had, but he did have an idea. After missing so many birthdays he owed her more than a dozen gifts but the puzzlebox would have to do for now. "Excuse me." he'd keep his voice low. Diego sighed as he walked into the store. This was proving to be an impossible challenge and he was absolutely terrible at gift giving. The only person he ever did right by was Luci but that was over a decade ago. His eyes lingered on a puzzlebox near him before he shook his head and approached the clerk. [break][break]

If Luci caught up, she would definitely hear this next part: "She's fairly difficult to please, but I owe her a lot, so I want something personal." The clerk would nod and gesture to an origami kit which let you make different things such as cranes and hearts. His brow furled as he went from candle to candle having chosen to live minimalist he didn't have a single clue how to properly decorate. Not only were their different scents but different types of wax? What was the difference between essential oils and coconut wax...? He weighed the two candles between himself before a friendly store clerk approached and offered him a hand. Out of earshot of Luci he would start to explain as they walked, "I'm not good with this type of thing you see its a gift for a coworker and I'm not sure what she likes..." they would get closer to where Luci would now hear and Diego would continue with what he was saying not sounding wildly out of context "...She's about...25? Young and a lot of energy. I don't want to disappoint her." He would stop as the clerk took in what he said and then handed him a candle. "This one is very popular with our younger ladies!" He would inspect it, reading the words 'Moonlight Mist', which was ultimately nonsense to him, but nodded. As she rung it up he would pay with cash and then make his way down the mall. [break][break]
As he walked, he would look at all the store names before pausing at a clothing store catered exclusively to women. He would squint as he read some of what they had on sale but ultimately decided to keep going. Sure, Yaeko might be happy with clothing but if there was one thing he didn't want to risk it was getting her the wrong size. She helped with all of his medical issues for free on her own time and he had a lot of respect for the lengths she would go for the rest of In'ei.[break][break]
He did remember that she was interested in arts and crafts so after a few more stores he entered a crafts store. The real question was...where to even start? He was pretty hopeless.[break][break]

The holidays had never been easy for Diego. When he was a kid, he didn't have a family or even a place he could call home, so the winter just meant being cold and extra hungry. Even when Luci came into the picture, it wasn't easy making sure she was fed let alone him. Usually there was enough money leftover for one present and at the time Diego always made sure she had something to open on Christmas Day.[break][break]
Was that what brought him here? Not exactly; instead, he was here to give a gift to the leader of Bansho for taking him in and helping him all these years. With a beanie, jacket, glasses and removing the skull bone he usually had he made his way through the shopping mall slowly knocking off stuff on his list of things to buy. [break][break]
He was so focused that when he bumped into Luci, he didn't even realize it was her, saying, "Sorry about that." He continued to make his way through the crowd. It was respectful to buy gifts for all your coworkers and with Shurin being easy that left the two ladies. [break][break]
His only experience with that was with Luci, but he doubted a puzzle box or something shiny would be appreciated by those two so it was about window shopping until he found something. First was a luxury store with candles as the main selling point. He would enter and look around, picking up a few and sniffing them before asking someone for help. He had to find something that Chi-Chi would like...something girly? fruity? He was really clueless.

"Like I give a damn about something like that!" Diego would drop back on the ground as he watched Antonio make a beeline for the car. This was truly the final test, would he focus on saving those in front of him or would his pride get in the way? Either way Diego had to give him some breathing room so he leaned into his arrogance to sell the illusion "Oi Oi Oi done already? Who cares about a bunch of small fry." He would take slow steps towards the scene giving Antonio plenty of time to decide. [break][break]
And decide he did. Impressing both Diego and the paid actors Antonio choose to put himself in harms way. Once the electricity had subsided Diego stopped, his eccentric smile returning to a pensive look. "Fortunately, I have no more interest in fighting you, Ironheart." his voice was much calmer and quieter as he pulled out a gun. "We'll patch you up, but you'll need to take a nap." A sedative shot out, bypassing his defenses. "Alright. Let's bring him." The group in the car would get out and soon...[break][break]
Antonio would wake up fully patched up and in what looked like an interrogation room. Diego leaned against the corner wall and standing in front of Diego was the familiar face of Truthteller. "I'll get right to the point. Ironheart, we know your history, and given your skills and resolve, we'd like to offer you a way to reenter hero society." He would pause, waiting for any response before continuing, "In'ei is a subdivision of Bansho. You are familiar with 'Manticora', yes? He was sent to test you as member of In'ei." Diego would speak up, "Sorry old man. I had to sell it to see if you lived up to the name." Truthteller would clear his throat. "As you might have heard, my quirk can identify lies, so you have two options: option 1, we put you in jail as a criminal, or option 2, you join In'ei. You'll remain a deep cover agent, so your identity as a villain will remain, but you'll be back on the path of doing good. Take your time when it comes to this decision, don't take it lightly." With that, he'd fall silent[break][break]
This wouldn't be an easy decision for Antonio and both Truthteller and Diego were certain that he'd have a lot to say about this now and in the future. For now, it was just a matter of whether this whole effort wasn't in vain.

Nanba, now in over his head, was clearly starting to panic, trying not to blow their cover, but was now shouting orders at Grime, "Grime, get him! Kill him now!" He blurted out what exactly Diego wanted. A credible threat and the use of deadly force was enough to get this man thrown in jail. It wasn't enough for Diego, though he could feel himself itching for a fight undercover work as a normal person didn't do much for him.[break][break]
As Grime engaged his quirk Diego would do the same slowing his "fall" to mess with the timing only to see, out of the corner of his eye, Luci with a...could that really be called a disguise? Well, she was pretty drunk so this was probably the best she could manage. Her timing was still great even back when they were younger he would always hold the focus of their opponent and she would come in once they were distracted, if only they could have become a proper team...[break][break]
"Watch your step, or you'll lose your HEAD." He spun his body around and slammed his heel against Grime's head sending him flying into a wall, unconscious. With the main threat being dealt with he would pause for a moment debating if he should just let himself get captured to end this facade once and for all but...No, he had one last important job to do. He would kick up to his maximum speed at Luci, shoving something into her arms before using his quirk to rise into the air. Landing back on the rooftop he would take one more glance back at her, she could handle it from here there was no doubt in his mind. Then he was gone. Diego kept up his facade, but internally, he couldn't help but smile; Luci was still so damn bad at not trusting people so easily. She truly was like the sun wanting to brighten up the days of anyone and everything around her without stopping to consider if she could. "Fine, but after this, if you try to arrest me, you'll fail, so focus on what needs to be done only." If he got moving she'd never catch up to him anyways, that should have been clear for the both of them[break][break]
As he entered the room with Luci over his shoulder, he'd resume his unassuming facade with the fake smile and speak to those looking at him. "Lucia-san was lost. I'm sorry for the disturbance and worrying you all!" He'd set Luci down and give a bow just to get flagged down by his target. Diego had been given a device for tracking and audio recording that was small enough that if placed on Nanba, he wouldn't have noticed, and more importantly, Luci wouldn't notice either. A petty villain like him wouldn't be able to afford things like this and he couldn't risk her finding out his real goal.[break][break]
"Nanba-san thank you so much for the opportunity." He'd give a quick bow to him and respectfully to the others. When offered a drink when he sat with them he had his chance, faking him almost dropping it with a slight of hand he would flick the tracker onto Nanba in a spot where it wouldn't be easily detected. "I'm so sorry! Please accept my humble apologies, I'm a little nervous" He'd give a little laugh to sell the illusion.[break][break]
"Don't worry about it Daigo-kun!" His phone rang "If you'll excuse me, my investors and I need to step out for a bit. Everyone the next round is on the house including food so indulge yourself as thanks for all your hard work!" He'd cheer and then get up moving outside. Whatever they were up to, it wasn't good. With that enforcer outside it was going to be time to fight.
Diego may have offered a truce but it wasn't like he was eager to see Luci in danger so he would give a quick excuse and make his way out of the room. A quick disguise to hide his appearance, and he would be off to the roof, observing for a moment as they discussed their illegal business before he'd reveal himself. "Oh? Looks like we've got some shady business here, sorry I'm late to the party!" He would leap off the roof and swing down at Grime.

A pivot and leaning into his strengths? Diego couldn't give him higher marks even if he wanted to. Ironheart was durable, and he knew it which only served to push Diegos already unnerving smile to one that looked like a maniac. He was truly enjoying himself even more than the act "You look so proud of yourself, want me to praise you?" He would use Ironhearts constitution to push himself off of him and raised both arms to cover hit vitals as he took a glancing blow. The stinging on his bare arms was proof the Ironheart was a name that fit the name, skin of steel and resolve of steel made for an impressive candidate. [break][break]
As he moved back he would click the second button indicating that Ironheart had passed the second test which meant it was show time. The car that was previously parked would begin to drive by erratically before hitting a telephone pole just outside of the area. The two were fighting with a young adult rolling down the window and calling for help. If that wasn't enough one of the "live-wires" somehow snapped and was now touching the car making it impossible for the person driving it to leave.[break][break]
This gave Ironheart a choice: would he stay and fight Diego or go help someone only he could. Diego, to act his part, still challenged him, "Don't get distracted, chump!" and he launched at Antonio with another straight punch.[break][break]

If it wasn't for the shadows on the alleyway Luci would be sure to see his surprise. Not because of what she said but how she said it, Luci was never great at hiding things or acting. This felt more genuine than any act she'd ever put on in the past, which was usually about things that were inconsequential, truthfully. Perhaps it was because she was drunk? He had never seen her drunk before; they went their separate ways before he could celebrate her birthday. He had missed a lot of her birthdays...[break][break]
He had already hidden the truth from her for so long that the best he could do about his feelings for her was to use her name roundaboutly. He was so tired of lying and keeping himself away from her that these last few run-ins had made him want to leave this life more than ever. "Don't apologize." It was his fault, after all; was she really still feeling guilty all this time? He couldn't keep up with what was an act and what was real anymore. Not from his own life and not from hers. "I had to learn how to survive on my own." He had to put some distance between the two of them. His heart was racing still as the image of the kiss they almost shared was burned into his brain. If she ever tried something like that again, he definitely wouldn't be able to stop himself. However, he offered her a shoulder as she was shaky on her feet. "Listen, the reason we're here doesn't matter; we want the same thing for different reasons, so let's work together for today and today only." She began to bring her back to the room with all their coworkers. "Keep drinking and having a good time." They couldn't make them any more suspicious, or they'd be putting all these innocent people in danger. Diego, of course, would keep that last bit of information to himself. [break][break]

"Ironheart is exactly as you'd expect him to be. A man made of steel and the constitution of one. Your usual to-hand methods are unlikely to make him budge, but your job is to keep him entertained until we arrive. We'll be the ones to test his true nature." The orders he received echoed in his head as he engaged the senior pro hero.[break][break]
Still, he enjoyed fighting and always had. So he let the swing land only to feel the metal against his fist; he sure was durable, and that was to be expected. Diego wasn't dumb enough to let himself be caught, so with a quick feint, he would basically yell, "Fire? More like hot air!" With almost a flicker of movement, he could circle around Antonio and give him a firm kick to the back.[break][break]
Farther down the road, a car approached. Diego backed off after kick, and he recognized it. In'ei agreed to protect the public, so creating real disasters as a means to test future heroes was a no-go. They had to improvise. What better way to test Ironheart than by faking an electrical emergency? Something he could easily solve if he so desired. They just needed to wait for a break in their scuffle and the signal from Diego...[break][break]
