Unfortunately for Luci Diego was already on the move, finding a quiet space in the building wasn't hard and he just needed to pretend to be on the phone with family...that he didn't have. "Oh, hello, Mom, yes, yes, I'm at the restaurant with my coworkers! It's really fun." He'd pause as the person on the end relayed some new information. "You found mud on it? Well don't worry I'll take care of it for you later." A smalltimer named Grime had just shown up at their location and it was up to Diego to take care of it. He needed to step outside and not draw attention to himself, so he made a quick excuse when he came back to the room about needing to take a phone call, but...where was Luci? Don't tell me she left already? He couldn't tell if he was relieved or upset, perhaps a bit of both. With an internal sigh, he quickly scanned the place and didn't see anything out of the ordinary until he realized there was a tiny bit of sludge on the outside window. [break][break]
He stepped out and looked over to see Luci standing awkwardly near a close wall; unaware that further down the alley was his target he spoke openly, "So? What did you bring me out here for?" Sounding more like his usual self, he took a couple of steps forward. "Hey Luci..a-san." Shit. Grime was clearly suspicious of them, and Diego had to pivot to his other personality. "Y-You said you had something to say to me?" He took a step closer to her, blush only hidden under the cover of night with his face close to Luci's. His eyes pleading for her to do or say something that would bring their suspicion level down; otherwise, this whole mission was forfeit for both of them. [break][break]

Momo's clinging didn't really bother him, but the tug on his other arm made him briefly flash red, and his heart sound like a jet engine. Luci had clung to him before over the years, from using him for support to asking for a piggyback ride when they were younger and she was tired, but this was...different. Maybe it was because they were in their 30s and because he'd never seen Luci looking so beautiful, but his nerves were going haywire. [break][break]
The onigiri was very tempting, and Diego was cursing internally since not only did Luci remember his favorite food, but she was clearly a little drunk and, therefore, acting more genuine than he'd seen her in years. It was as if they weren't actually enemies to her at that moment, so when he went to address her in his phony schtick, his eyes lingered as they met hers. [break][break]
Luckily, the CEO gave him the perfect opportunity to break away before he did something he'd regret. His body language didn't change but his ears perked up. The Mummy, Yingshe, Bakuretsu...any civilian might have heard this coded language and thought of it as nonsense, but he was very familiar with villains that were on the rise.[break][break]
His expression didn't change as he engaged in casual chatter with Momo. Did Luci realize what was going on? Either way he needed to make a quick exit and gather information properly while he had the chance. "Oh, excuse me, Lucia-san, Momo-san, I'll need you both to let go of me; I need to step out and use the restroom." He gave a 'nervous' laugh as he stood up, bowed and left the room. Momo would look over at Luci(a) and gesture for her to come closer. "Are you interested in the new guy too? He's super dreamy, and I've heard he's super single, too! Amano-chan mentioned that aside from some girl he's interested in he's definitely available! We'll see who wins by the end of the night?" She winked and then returned to her drink. Oh boy.

Socializing was absolutely not Diego's strong suit. He spent the last decade or so in isolation, interacting with people through a fake persona, and the most he got to do with that was get into more fights. Sure, he was doing it for the sake of heroes and the betterment of society, but that didn't mean he was happy about it. This was both more and yet less bearable since Luci was here. [break][break]

"Daigo-kun, do you want something to eat? Yakitori? Hokke? Eihire?" Her eyes sparkled at Diego, clearly enamored with him and wanting all his attention, but she didn't even know his favorite food or anything about him. It was sad, especially with the love of his life sitting right next to him. "More or less, I'm just not a big drinker, so tea is great for me." he'd turn to Momo. "I'm fine, but I appreciate the gesture."[break][break]

He couldn't believe he said that! Diego could feel his soul leaving his body as he hammed it up in front of Luci. Not only was he an undercover hero, but he was an undercover hero masquerading as a villain, pretending to not know the love of his life was right before him. A dream that became his worst nightmare was the most accurate description[break][break]
He'd call Luci on her bluff and give a slight bow. "I would be honored to; I hope you don't mind if I ask the same." Even if it wasn't part of his mission he did find it a bit cathartic to be able to speak to Luci so casually. "Absolutely. I'll head home and change. Please let me know where we're heading, and I'll meet you all there." Once he got the name of the place he would finish his day and report back to In'ei about his progress. [break][break]
"I'll remain undercover for the time being. Phantasmagoria is working under the same cover and likely has the same objective." The gruff voice on the other end of the communicator sighed before saying, "Cooperate then. There's no other option; the CEO is too dangerous to be left to chance." Diego fully expected to be chewed out, but to have the old man keep him on. He must have had a lot of faith in him and Diego wouldn't let him down.[break][break]
Dressed up in a casual yet work-function-appropriate outfit, he made his way to the restaurant/bar and opened the sliding door to the space they had reserved. "Daigo-kun! Over here there's a spot between me and Lucia-san!" It was Momo, the overly flirtatious woman, and since he didn't want to be suspicious, he took a seat between the two of them and then asked for tea. The last thing he needed was to drink during this undercover mission and blow his cover in front of the CEO, who had suspiciously not arrived yet

Being in love with such a strong woman drove him crazy. Her giving attitude gave him such conflicting feelings he wanted to strangle her just as much as he wanted to kiss her, but there was, hopefully, a time and a place for that. A benefit of having known each other for almost three decades was that he could read her like a book and her him...sort of. "I don't usually drink," he'd scratched the back of his head nervously but then spoke up, looking directly at Luci. "Since you asked so nicely and have been such a great help, I'd love to go. Especially if you're there!" He'd flash a smile, internally screaming but knowing that what he said would bother her more than it bothered him. He may have been madly in love with her, but she wouldn't be able to stand getting close to a villain. He was calling her bluff.

If it wasn't for over a decade of practice Diego would have been having a panic attack. Luci? Here? In front of him? Undercover? Huh? Huh?? Not only that but she had someone put together a disguise that made her look even cuter than normal. If there was one thing he couldn't hide it was his embarrassment and clearly the other women picked up on it as the woman named Momo pouted and looked at Lucia. "Lucia-san! No fair you can't keep him all to yourself!" She'd flash eyes at Diego and add, "Come find me whenever you're done getting coffee, okay? I'll show you the ropes around here~" giggling, she'd take off with her friend and get back to work.[break][break]
Speaking in a much softer voice than normal, Diego smiled at Luci. "I'm sure I'll be fine, Lucia-san. Everyone here has been nothing but friendly and I really appreciate it! It's made my first day very welcoming." He needed to figure out what the hell she was doing here, and there was no way he could speak to her openly, but at the same time, there was no way he could make demands of her as the new person around here. Luckily, Luci had the same idea, and he would feign surprise. "What a coincidence! I was just about to ask where the break room is. Can't start my day without a good cup of coffee." He would follow Luci, getting eyes from various women around the office and giving them friendly waves as he passed. A couple of them could be heard remarking how lucky Lucia was. [break][break]
Once they were clear away from people and Luci spoke openly, dropping her act. She scolded him a lot growing up and this was exactly like flashing back to all those times. "Shh! You're talking way too loud." To sell the illusion, he would grab a spare coffee cup and begin to fill it up. "I can go wherever I want; I'm a villain, remember." He kept his voice to basically a whisper, "More importantly, what are YOU doing here? You stick out like a sore thumb, you're a Hero." He wanted to add 'You're too beautiful for this' but he couldn't bring himself to say it. It was hard standing this close to her and whatever perfume she was wearing was intoxicating. [break][break]
Just then, someone would enter the breakroom. "Oh Lucia-san! Perfect timing we're going to go out after work for drinks and maybe some dancing! Please come with us!" She looked over to Diego. "You're Daigo-san? Please come with us! It would be so nice to get to know you!" She'd clasp her hands together waiting for the two to respond. Diego wasn't sure, so his eyes would flit between the two of them before he'd clear his throat. "W-What do you say, Lucia-san?" Please say no, please say no.

Diego wasn't exactly sure if he was more annoyed or honored to be picked for this job...perhaps a little bit of both? He was specifically asked in an office with mostly women because, according to Yaeko, he was above average in attractiveness. He rolled his eyes at her, but took the job anyways. There was only one person who's opinion he cared about, and he hadn't seen her in a bit. [break][break]
His job was to be a temp worker hired by this company while gathering information on the CEO to feed back to In'ei. There were rumors that the person in charge was involved in the underworld, but nothing could be proven. So Diego, going by Daigo, was there to socialize and get any information possible from anyone the CEO was close to. From the financial staff to the secretary, there wasn't anyone off-limits here, but Diego had to be discreet.[break][break]
"Momo-chan! Isn't he SUPER handsome??" A girl was latched onto him as Diego gave his best smile. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Sayoko and Momo. I'm Daigo. Daigo Nishimura and I'll be in your care from today on." He gave a respectful bow as the two women squealed, "Sayo-chan! Amano is bringing the secretary too! We don't get super handsome guys around here often!" She looked up at Daigo. "So Daigo-kun, are you single? I don't see a wedding ring~" Diego scratched his head and laughed nervously. "I'm usually busy working, so I don't really have time for dating, you see..." The two women's eyes sparkled and Diego took a nervous step back.[break][break]
"Oh, they're here! Amano-san, Lucia-san! Come meet Daigo!" Diego took a step forward and bowed respectfully at the two women before he even got a good look at them. "Pleasure to meet you; I'm Daigo Nishimura. I'll be in your care from now on-" He froze. There was no way he wouldn't recognize Luci, even if she was dressed up in disguise. After an uncomfortable amount of time, the two women from earlier remarked, "Oh, look at that! He's stunned! Daigo-chan, Amano-san and Lucia-san are both single!" They giggled with each other as Diego tried to regain his composure. "If neither of you go for him I will!!" Momo laughed to herself.

Diego would put his hands in his pocket and stare at the spot where Luci once was. As Shurin took his leave, having opened a path for Diego to take her, she thought about throwing it away. Just ditching In'ei and taking Luci away somewhere to live their lives together, he would never have to see her cry again. For now, he needed to finish his job here. If, by chance, he ran into his target, he just prayed that Luci would never find out what he had to do.

Her greatest achievement. So he was wrong she didn't hold any feelings for him other than anger and pity. Why else would she want to bring him in so bad? She wants to move on, and as much as he probably should have, he couldn't. From the moment her dirt-covered face in tattered clothes showed up at his base when they were kids, she held his heart. Even in this path of darkness, he never wavered from his true goal, which was to protect her future. He couldn't bring her happiness, but he could protect her by continuing down this path. He smiled a bit, hearing the sound of her putting on his jacket, which stopped her crying almost immediately. They were trapped but for a moment he wished they could remain here forever. She'd be safe and he could tell her how he really felt. He'd be able to cook all her favorite meals, and even though she couldn't taste them anymore, he knew she was more about texture anyway. After hearing her do the same, he slowly drifted off a quick rest to recover some of his injuries and stamina from the long fight ahead. [break][break]
He wasn't exactly sure how long he was out but the sound of approaching crashing and smashing woke him up and he immediately jumped to his feet. Luci was still sleeping and he'd move over towards her, she was always such a heavy sleeper and...pretty too. He shook his head, focus Diego! "Hey, get up, we've got company!" He'd take a step towards the barrier that the sound was coming from only to see a large axe pierce the space and tear it open. "Oho, looks like the little Manticore is trapped~" Shurin, of course. Diego immediately grinned. "Whats a piece of garbage like you doing here? You miss me?" He raised his fists ready to start a fake fight. Shurin laughed and took out a device, which he threw past Diego next to Luci. "Hanging out with heroes? You've gone soft, Manticora; I'm gonna enjoy getting revenge for you smashing up my warehouse." he'd look past Diego to Luci with a devilish grin "Oh and bye bye birdie! I ain't gonna fight two of you at once so you're gonna go on a little trip." Diego's smile widened as he charged towards Shurin, swinging and making their scuffle look as realistic as possible. If he turned around now, he would break, and Shurin knew that killing heroes was a no-go. [break][break]

He could feel her staring daggers at him, it was something she'd done thousands of times before. Every time he got into a fight, didn't do well on an exam, slacked off, and slept in, she would somehow always find him and, more importantly, always find out. Truly annoying but...his memories didn't view her like that. All the times, he would get beat up, and she would be right there no matter what to patch him up. She always brought him soup and medicine when he came down with a cold from falling asleep outside. As angry as she would get, she always had a smile on her face, and that made all of this that much harder.[break][break]
"You should. You'll ruin your reputation if you hang around a villain all the time and you're not going to arrest me." He had heard Luci cry a few times so her muffled sounds didn't fall on deaf ears. He'd grit his teeth, frustrated that once again he was the one who made her cry. Did she want him to go to jail that badly? No...that wasn't it. Could it be- No, even if it was true it wasn't right. Someone who failed her over and over again had no right to stand on the same stage as her but he couldn't just let her cry. He wasn't cold, not even the least bit.[break][break]
"You're still such a crybaby." He said as he looked down at his torn jacket from the fighting he'd done up to this point and removed it before tossing it to Luci. He didn't say a single thing about it, but it was something he did often when they were really young and she was cold. He was used to living outdoors and when they started living together he would frequently wake up to her shivering and this was the only way he knew how to help. [break][break]

He refused to answer the question. There was no truthful answer he could tell her since he was both alone and not alone. In'ei wasn't exactly a social club, and treating it like that was the fastest way to get stripped from active duty. Besides even if he wasn't, they weren't on the same side at least Luci didn't believe they were on the same side. Yet she still believed in him and still wanted to connect with him...why? He didn't understand why. She was a Pro Hero, and Pro Heroes shouldn't have empathy for villains. [break][break]
Always a light in the darkness for him, the 'Diego' way made him bite his lip in frustration. This WAS the Diego way. She wasn't naive to him. She was an amazing, strong person to keep fighting without wavering after all this time, to care after all this time. He didn't deserve it; he didn't deserve to look at her in the eyes. Shurin would find them and know that the first click meant he needed an assist, and the second click meant he wasn't alone. If Luci didn't have anyone who could come and save her then he would do it the only way he knew how. "What kind of idiot thinks criminals should have dreams." He didn't use the word naive since he genuinely believed that Luci. "I'm gonna gather my strength after I rest and get us out of here. Then you can go back to your friends, coworkers, boyfriend or husband or...whatever. I'll keep doing what I'm doing." Either way they'd be stuck here for a long while, hopefully the barrier would hold in the meantime. [break][break]

Luci's quick thinking was what really saved them. He would relax his gravity over time until he was satisfied that the strength of the barrier she made could stand up to the walls. She was so much quicker than last time. It was like she was a different person altogether. From where she was ashamed of using her quirk to now being proud to call herself a hero who used her quirk freely. [break][break]
He let out a light chuckle. "If my memory serves me right, you said the same thing back there right before you-" He stopped himself, looking away before taking a seat in the farthest corner and looking away. "That's what I'm good at; who isn't proud of what they're good at? I'm the number 1 villain in all of Tokyo, and once I beat that into the Elementalist, he'll get this eyesore off my turf!" He was getting a bit too close to Luci and had to ham it up to put some distance between them. This was the only way he knew how, and he had already broken her heart once; surely, she had moved on since then. She was the most special person in the world, and only an idiot couldn't see that.[break][break]
Her claims of him forgetting everything almost made him break. He wanted to cry. The feeling of a knife being jammed into his heart was better than hearing that from the one he loved. He wanted to tell her she was wrong that she lived in his mind and heart every day. That he spent his nights praying that she'd remain safe.[break][break]
So he remained silent. It took everything he had, but he did it. No bravado, no Manticora, no Blueshift. He was just Diego, shaped by his regrets and desperately in love with someone he couldn't be with.[break][break]
He smashed the panel on the door they had just come in to make sure they couldn't be followed and then closed the hatch as he made his way down. He was trying to find the words, and after an eternity of silence, he finally managed to say, "There's a bend there." He pointed to their left. "Let's go." He moved past Luci, solemn expression as he made his way down the corridors until...[break][break]

Of course, The Elementalist would have countermeasures for people sneaking around! He was an idiot for thinking this would work! Barriers rose on either side, blocking their escape, and then moved together, aiming to crush them. Diego immediately flexed his gravity and pushed against them as they moved in, slowing but not stopping them. It wasn't something he could do on his own, and since he couldn't explain the plan, he had to get the point across quickly: "The exam! Stop them like you did the robots!" During that time, they performed a combo move using Diego's quirk to stop the movements, and then Luci used her 'vomit' to make a barrier. Hopefully, she was telling the truth when she said she couldn't forget him; if she had, they would be crushed.[break][break]
She just wouldn't hug him tightly like she did back then after they passed even though he wished she would.
