Calliope

Calliope was getting a bit fed up with her quirk. When she was in Greece, everyone that she was around knew of her quirk and avoided eye contact. Here however, people didn't know, and she'd already caused a lot of people to get ill because of her quirk. It wasn't like it was the end of the world when she did, but it made her feel worse than she felt like she needed to feel because she was hindering their ability to do basic things.

The sunglasses that she currently had were nothing special, and they'd already slipped off a few times which allowed her to impact those she interacted with. Sometimes it was great, but other times it was such a nuisance. She was not able to fully control how she used it, and if she could help it, she'd want to be able to use it when she wanted to.

Having gotten information from some of the people from her school, she would head over someone that could help her. A manufacturer, around her age, that would be able to hopefully make something especially for her. She had printed off some images of what she wanted, and brought her sunglasses as a reference. Knocking on the front door, she would idly stay on her phone to avoid the awkward silence. Maybe this person would be able to help her?

Another day, another dollar. Or yen? Nah. Didn't hit the same. 

Darius was posted at the equipment storefront today. The workshop was pretty barebones decor wise, lacking the frills and puffy presentation that many other vendors liked to boast about. FICSIT preferred a rugged, utilitarian approach to their aesthetics and products, and Darius agreed with the decision wholeheartedly.

The muscled engineer sighed, eyebrows narrowing as he idly tinkered with the screws and connectors on a hydraulic glove. Friday evening was always busy—the weekend meant lots of hero students coming to check the cool toys out for the Hell of it. He'd sold enough basic pieces of gear today to make the stockholders proud, but slinging shelf product didn't satisfy Darius the same way working on custom commissions did. 

The giant concrete box that was the workshop didn't seem too inviting from the outside. A distinct lack of windows and dull paint were layered by the orange-black colors of the FICSIT logo. As it didn't seem like a regular store, knocking wasn't uncommon—Darius looking up from his work to shout: "DOORS OPEN!" He'd grunt, standing up from his stool and blowing a stray strand of hair from his eyes. The front door led to a showroom of their low-risk civilian grade products, but the actual run stuff along with the man himself were locked squarely behind several hundred centimeters of reinforced glass polymer.

Calliope

As much as it didn't look inviting, Calli didn't judge. She knew that the places that sometimes looked the grossest, could be the best things ever. Those old mom and pop shops with two seats felt more homey and safe than any big, overly expensive restaurant. With a breath, she would step inside and make a note to keep her sunglasses pressed to her face.

"Heya uh, I heard about you from some people at the school? UAU? I'm here about some equipment?" She would holler as she opened the door, not immediately seeing the person who had shouted to her. As she walked further in, she'd look at some of the equipment that was on display, but not pay it too much mind. To her, something super teched out or bulky never really made sense to her; why would you want to have some weird gauntlets to prove that your punch just sucks ass without them? There was something so good about being able to feel the pain of a good punch that equipment could never replicate.

"I was wanting to get some sunglasses, for my quirk?" It sounded like a weird sentence, so she made it sound like a question for some reason. Was it really for her quirk, or just that she didn't want to annoy people? Either way she needed it, and she would look cool having custom sunglasses. "Would that be something you could do...?" Her eyes would wander before someone caught her eye.

Most of the gear Calliope would pass by looked extremely industrial. Lots of gleaming metal, big, blocky designs, all generally way more utilitarian than most fancified support gear would be. "Well judging by all the crap- er, wonderful products we got in here, I'd say you came to the right place!" He'd pass through the secured, armored door and onto the show room floor proper. 

"Hmm? Sunglasses huh? Very nice! You have laser eyes? Spooky stare?" Darius and Calliope would cross paths, the man folding his arms and trying his best to not look terribly intimidating as he towered over her. "Whatever it is, something that simple shouldn't be a sweat. Hey, something that simple? Won't even need proof of licensure or enrollment. Oh!" He snapped his fingers, memory sparking. "Right! You said you came here based on word of mouth from UAU? If you got your I.D. on you we're running student discounts for most levels of equipment."

He glanced around the room proudly, coincidentally having yet to meet the girl's gaze. "We got plenty of tinted goggles around as basic stock, but if you were lookin' for something like sunglasses specifically? That'd have to be a commission." And thank GOD for that. Something to stimulate his brain a little after a long day of playing salesman.

"I guess it's a spooky stare? I make people dizzy when I look at them." Calli would reply plainly, her eyes glancing over him as he came into view better. He was a cutie, but he was tall. She'd look up to try to meet his gaze, crossing her arms to mimic him.

"I brought them anyways." She'd pull out her proof of enrollment and her student I.D. to show him. "I gotta love discounts. That's sweet of you to do."

Looking around, there was nothing that really caught her eye. "Naw, as much as I wouldn't mind getting something simple, I don't want to have something basic. I want it to be mine, ya know? Get that signature touch, especially from someone so capable!" She'd motion to him, wanting to give him props on his professional nature. "Here are the references and uh, the ones I'm wearing." She'd give him the images first; they mostly showed more wrap around sunglasses that still looked cool. Afterwards, she'd pass her sunglasses over. "These work okay, but they slip too easily and aren't super comfortable." She'd avoid his gaze and instead stare at his chest; after a few seconds, she wasn't sure that was any better.

"Huh? Really? I've felt fine..." Darius' eyebrows furrowed, the cogs in his brain turning slowly. "Ah! If you want sunglasses that probably means having something to do with line of sight. ...But I'm also huge so not sure how you'd have avoided me this whole time!" He would laugh happily. "You can give me the full rundown on your Quirk when we get to the good part." 

He'd take the offered documentation as gingerly as a man his size could, giving them a quick glance over before handing them back. "Looks legit. Nice to meet ya, Calliope. I guess if I know your name you should get to know mine—Darius Ficsit!" His chest puffed slightly. "And no sweat on the prices. We're pretty new in Japan still, so getting a good reputation going with the best of the best is only good business!"

At least she came prepared. "Full references? More than most folks come in with!" Darius took a few steps to an open part of the floor, flipping a ground level lever that caused a workbench to rise up, complete with multi light lamps and perfect level. "Let's see... so you're looking for just a durable, comfy, non-slip pair? No extra bells or whistles?" The engineer placed the existing glasses on the table, shining a small laser at the lens. "I assume these work to stop your Quirk from unwanted activation, yeah? Would you happen to know how much tint is needed? Would even a small peak be too much?"

"I have to look directly in your eyes. Afterwards, any line of sight I have on you makes it stay. Don't ask me why or how." She really didn't know, that's just how things were. "Darius huh? That's a funky name. Definitely never met someone with that type of name before." Then again, her name was pretty unique too. "Nice to meet you."

She wouldn't reach much as the table came up, but she did whistle at how cool it was. That shit just came up like nothing! So sick. "Nothing extra. At the most maybe a band or rope so I can have it around my neck. And uh... The more tint the better. Even though those glasses stop it from happening, it's the fact of the matter that people can still see where I'm looking which may cause them to try to meet my gaze. You know, that's a normal thing for someone to want to do." She'd stare at the bench as she talked. "Is that enough of an idea of what could work?"

"Funky? Ha! I'm a proud American at heart!" Darius grinned wife. Lucky that the Japanese for 'American' was pretty phonetically similar to the actual English, as he had assumed Calliope wouldn't speak the language. "So you got a trigger to activate it by locking eyes. Once triggered it maintains the effect until you don't see 'em." Pretty strange logically speaking, but Quirks were quirky! He was blessed with a simplistic Quirk befitting his straightforward mindset. 

"Hmm. I get the concern. What about night or dark spaces? If you ever want to not risk a stare in that situation but still actually see, you'd need something like a one-way tint. Buuut that means your sunglasses wouldn't work as sunglasses. It stops light from leaving your eyes, not reaching it. Could make a secondary lens pair to switch between the two. Maybe some kind of built in switch? Eh. More moving parts the more likely something is to break, and this is supposed to be simple. Oh! What about a changeable pair of lenses you can affix manually? Best of both worlds and avoids overcomplicating things." 

Darius blinked. "Rambled a bit there. Yeah I can do it. Any of the ideas I pitched sound good to you?"

"American? I see." That was interesting that people from all over the world were able to come to Japan and connect like this. "Never been, or maybe I did when I was younger."

As he gave off ideas, she really had no idea what she wanted. It seemed so complicated. "Don't you have those like... Reflective sunglasses? That are like a mirror when someone looks at them but you just look normally?" She wasn't sure that would work. "I don't mind the changeable pairs but... I think having something is what I want. If I'm fighting someone I want to be able to just keep them on or off and not have to change something." Plus, that was one more thing she could easily break. "Though, I'm not the expert here." Calliope just wanted something simple and efficient. "Even if you don't know right now, I don't mind workshopping it with you."

"Well sure. That's basically what a one-way tint is, 'cept with reflection rather than absorption. A single pair of those would work wonders in most situations—but like I warned you, a mirrored or one-way set won't actually help with blinding lights." He leaned against the workbench, spreading out the references pictures and giving them another look over. "Course, your number one worry is making sure your Quirk doesn't activate on accident. If you want to keep it super simple we can just do a single fixed pair." 

A fresh blueprint was laid across the bench, Darius leaning over and begining to etch a drawing. "Lightweight. Durable. Comfortable for long periods. Mirrored lens. And if we're already giving it a band to secure it around the head, can just up the elasticity so it's easy to wear and pull off at a moment's notice." He'd nod, tapping the blueprint. "Fair word of warning, FICSIT isn't really a fashion boutique. I can make you something that resembles a sleek pair of wraparounds, but it won't necessarily be the prettiest thing you've ever seen, yeah? Function over form is my personal motto when it comes to designing important equipment like this." 

He'd scoop up the reference material and hand it back with a gleaming smile, careful to look at the top of her head rather than her eyes to the best of his ability. "Now that the basic ideas are down I'd need an actual workplace to start messing with concepts. Provided you like the core concepts I listed off, the actual visuals and color are flexible. Since it's a small time project I can bring you back into our Level 5 shop if you'd like. Otherwise I can get some protoypes going and call you back another day."

Being able to help her with blinding lights would be nice... But she wasn't sure how many situations she would be in that would need that. "Hmm..." Biting on her lip, she'd take it into consideration.

"I don't care about being pretty." She'd cross her arms, knowing that it was the least of her concerns. "I care a lot more about being able to not have to use it when it isn't needed. Especially during the day. As long as they look normal enough, I don't care."

"I like what you have going so far." She'd look over everything, taking back her things and putting her sunglasses back on. "I have nothing else planned today, so really, I'm good to go forward and watch you work, unless that makes you nervous or something." She's like to refine it in person if possible so that he didn't have to wait around for her.

"Works for me. I know part of the Hero gig these days is 'branding' and whatever else but I'd rather have a working piece of equipment than a pretty one." With the greenlight to go forward using the schematics, Darius smirked and gestured to a large set of double doors with a massive "5" above them. "Feel free to step on in back with me, then. Low level stuff so all I'll have you wear is some safety goggles and gloves. Should go without saying but please don't touch anything but your own project. Annnd since we've settled on a rough design I can whip you up a quote so you can see the price before I actually make the things. Sound good?" 

Unlike the other numbered doors with locked, reinforced frames, Level 5 were a simple set of push bar doors leading into a modest workshop. Strays bits and pieces and unfinished commissions were strewn about separate tables. "Goggles and gloves," Darius directed himself and Calliope to nearby bins to don the safety gear before beelining for an empty table and setting the blueprint into a rectangular marked space. A computer scanner read the schematics information, pulling tools and material he'd need in the creation of Calliope's sunglasses. 

"And here's the quote." He tore off a ticket from the printer, the machine calculating based on the materials pulled and the estimated time to completion. "Made sure to remember your discount, though it wasn't too expensive in the first place."

"I don't care for branding myself all that much. I'm not looking to be some big name hero with a cool logo or something." It wasn't why she wanted to be a hero. If she wanted clout, it would be easier to be a movie star or singer. Still, she wanted them to at least look decent enough.

Following him into the back rooms, she kept her guard up a bit, but also didn't freak out about the fact that she was being led away from the main entrance by a strong tall man. "Makes sense. I'm only handsy with consent." She'd snicker, before putting on the gloves and goggles. She'd fix her hair so some of it was behind the band and some of it was out of it before keeping close to him.

Looking at the total, she'd fish out the yen without giving it a second thought. "Honest pay for honest work, I'd say. I'd rather go here than some expensive sunglasses store that is boasting about being able to give me super sight. You seem genuine, and I like that best." She'd pass the yen over and cross her arms. "I don't mind just standing here though, so please, take your time."

"I would hope so! I, for one, wouldn't want anyone but an expert touching my critical field gear either." Either the engineer had missed the joke or purposefully ignored it—though given his hyper focused demeanor it was probably the former. "Same privilege extends to your gear, too. Only ones that will be messing with it are you and me." She paid without muss or fuss, Darius giving it a quick count before folding the bills and twisting a rubber band around the roll, tossing it in a nearby drawer. "Very nice!"

"Now that that's all settled, it's time for the fun part: making it!" Not that the creative process would be all that interesting to anyone but a dedicated nerd like Darius. It started with injecting molten polymer into a mold, clearly modeled as the front half of the wraparounds. While the liquid hissed and settled, Ficsit flipped through a few different eyewear materials before settling on a black, slick, glinting lens that reflected the outside world in it's ebony expanse. "Good news is this isn't glass. Means if someone breaks it with a punch or Quirk during combat you don't risk getting a shard sent straight into your eye. You sticking with the mirrored lens?"

"I'm not expert, so I won't be touching anything." She trusted that he would do a good job with her gear, so she was glad to know that it wasn't something that was going to be tossed around. "Ah, I'm glad it's not a collaborative experience for you." Though she no doubt knew that other manufacturers were good, she wasn't really apt to trust someone with her creation if she didn't know that they were working on it.

Calli would watch him patiently, looking to see that he was working diligently on the aspects of her sunglasses. They were going to look good, Calli had no doubt, but it was a treat to be able to see how they were made. "Yeah, I wouldn't like that. I'm sure I'm going to get punched in the face a lot." Even with her fight with Junsuina, she'd gotten a few good punches to the face. "Mirrored? Um... Yeah I think so." She knew that it wasn't the ideal thing, but it was something that felt right for her. It would guarantee that people wouldn't try to look at her eyes and predict where she was aiming at. "I think that'll be the best bet for me right now."
