The soft crunch of leaves went out from the underfoot and into the silent canopy of the wilderness. A figure dressed sharply — distinctly unbefitting the environment, considerably so — walked about the forest; the luscious green, with the midday sun refracting through the leaves above, fell upon the man's visage. His yellow skin, made like that of candy, became an illuminated lime, and his clothing, too, reflected the influence of the greater wilds. A small journal was held in the leather of his left hand, with his right tracing a pencil across a once blank sheet — the page, originally a subtle tinge of yellow, too was an afflicted green.
[break][break]
The doctor — unlicensed, beyond claiming the title baselessly — strode through the undergrowth, mapping his path along the page. It wasn't unknown territory, sure, but to one such as himself? It was vital to detail places where society wouldn't know where to look; places from which the modern world faded away and the only thing left was the wilderness that preceded them all. Though, one still dressed as he would never be truly removed from that culture.
[break][break]
Regardless of his place in the defined world, he took to the wild in search of its purpose for him — or, rather, that would be the sole reason if he was any lesser. Though justified in practicality, its true purpose was the simple delight it brought upon the wanderer's senses. Out here, the connection to the hive dimmed; though he was it, and it was he, the input of their individual minds overlapping in a sticky-sweet cacophony grew to be its own form of exhaustion. Here, where that tie stood by a thread away from severance, there was peace.
[break][break]
And, later, peace for the hive once the string thickened again.
[break][break]
But then came a new sound. Or, rather, a sound just away from the cliffside of known, as though it dangled from its height towards the black abyss below; not yet in the realm of fear, but soon to find it. Something guttural in enunciation but subtly underplayed amidst the crunch of brittle materials.
[break][break]
A natural curiosity arose in the man as he took to find the source, the bark of fallen trees and branches creaking beneath his leather soles. Upon which, after emerging from the growth, he came upon a stream. His end, though perhaps clear at another time before, found itself poisoned by a flow of scarlet, blanketing the river bed from sight. The doctor's eyes trailed along its path, following it upstream towards where the sound once came and, now, there lie the one responsible.
[break][break]
A creature of towering stature — one that made even the doctor seem no more an ant to an elephant — ripped into an animal, with blood from its carcass dripping into the river. There lay ahead of the doctor such a being, one truly unthinkable from where he stood; surely, it wasn't natural to the region. No, even if it were, they most certainly didn't come about naturally! — or, he thought, not without the presence of a mutation.
[break][break]
As he stood along the riverbank, so too hanging along the brink of the known and the unknown, a stone from beneath his foot shifted beneath his weight. Though he caught himself away from the fall, certainly the sound of his once footing made itself known, plunging into the sanguine depths with a splash — and a newly found tension.
