Department of Heroes Freshman
A skills assessment! The perfect opportunity for Miroru's anxiety to run absolutely wild.
She was familiar with Dauntless at this point. She enjoyed his classes, especially the practical aspects of finding ways to bring criminals to ground and remove them as a threat without being overly brutal or exposing the city to further harm by being reluctant to bring to bear the force necessary to resolve a dangerous situation.
But this was different! This time he wanted to see her stuff in action! To go toe to toe with a professional hero! It was an awesome opportunity! It was exciting! It was... ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING.
What if she messed up? What if she embarrassed herself?! What if she lost Dauntless's faith in her?! Was she overestimating herself to believe he had any to begin with?!
W H A T I F ran through her mind over and over. But in the end, there was still only one thing to be done.
Show up.
So she showed up, heading to meet Dauntless at Ground Gamma, redoing the bandages holding her burn dressings against her forearms and covering her knuckles for the fourth time today as she did.
Maybe he wouldn't notice how nervous she was.
I can pay no price too great for justice.

- LOCATION - "It means fearless." Well, Demura can't say he didn't expect something like this to happen when he accepted the position at U.A. Kids often had a need to want to prove their worth to others, whether they be mentors, peers, or even strangers. And the freshmen at the university were no different. And what better way to satisfy that urge than to earn some rep and clout from taking on, no, taking down the school's combat instructor. Imagine it, beating the guy who was supposed to be teaching you how to fight, in a spar. The ego-boost a person could get from the would be incalculable. Which was why he felt the need to ground the would-be challengers in reality. Show them their actual limits. He had an open-door policy regarding spars; if he had time, he'd do it. They were training the next generation of heroes, so any leeway couldn't be allowed. It'd give rise to complacency, to cockiness, to recklessness. And anyone one of those got people killed. That wouldn't happen under his watch. Many of the freshman last year had asked for sessions right out of the gate, and now had given him much trouble. Some were stronger than him, or faster, but they didn't have a good foundation in fighting. Other had that, but their Quirks themselves lacked. No one had the right combination to pose a serious threat to him. This year's freshman... they were different. And Miroru was one of the shining examples of that. She had a clearer understanding of her capabilities than he did at that age, and an even more clear understanding of the type of future she wanted to help build and protect. He admitted he had his doubts when she first displayed the limits of her Quirk, which prompted a one-to-one meeting with the student, but he knew now that she was on the path to being among the best of them. So he admitted he was surprised when she asked to go against him. Or maybe, he shouldn't have been. People like her did what was necessary to achieve their goals and pursued every avenue to on the path towards them. As one of her teachers, he could only do his best to help her along the way. Upon seeing her come into view, his gaze immediately focused on the wrapped bandages of her arms. He knew it was related to Quirk-overuse and clicked his teeth. "Alright Miroru, you know how this works. We go until either I cede to you, or until I think you've reached your limits. Remember to pace yourself, and to not burn yourself out. Even though I want you giving your all, this is still just a sparring session. No need have an extended stay in the infirmary, alright?" His tone was even, the same he used when in the lecture halls. Demura didn't have his rifle, one because Miroru's Quirk rendered it just a paperweight essentially, and two, because he wanted her to get used to physically powerful opponents. It'd do well to figure out how to deal with them early on. "You ready?" Miroru
