Character Creation
For information on character creation, read this thread [o]
Q. I’m struggling with my profile and could use a little extra help. Where do I go?
We have an #ask_staff channel on discord that is there for all your needs. Alternatively, if you'd like to chat with the community for help, you can use #member-help-desk. If you'd prefer a more open discussion, you can also share ideas in #quirkshopping.
Q. Is it okay to poke a mod or staff about upgrades or approvals?
The mods are always here to help you on FFJ but also keep in mind that some of them live busy lives with jobs, school, and other IRL obligations. As a general standard, we aim to make sure that most types of requests are processed no later than a week after submission. We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding. If after a week has passed, and you've received no word, then please do message one of us. If requests aren't being processed in a "timely manner," it usually means we're going through a very busy patch, but we'll try our best to get your stuff taken care of as soon as possible.
Q. How many characters can someone have?
Each member can have up to 6 characters at the same time. If you wish to make more after your limit, you will need to NG+ one of your characters, purchase an additional slot from the event shop, or use those ideas for NPCs on your narrative account.
Q. How many of each starting EXP do I get?
Each person gets 1 advanced start and 1 expert start. Every other character will need to be the standard start unless they are using one of the event shop starts.
Q. Is there a limit to how many characters I can have per faction?
No, you are able to use your 6 slots for any faction, however you see fit. 2 additional slots are gained only through the event shop.
Q. How young can my character be?
The age minimum for every faction is 18. The only time that characters are allowed to be under this is for NPCs.
Q. Can I be in more than one faction?
Since the line between factions can be blurred, though you may do actions that are characteristic of another faction, you can only have one on your profile (which will be shown on your side profile, Discord tags and character sheet). Usually this will be seen in non-civilians having civilian personas, such as a regular day job or difference in appearance to their alter ego. If you start doing a lot of actions that may be seen as unfitting of your faction (a civilian overusing their quirk without a license, or perhaps a hero ending the lives of innocents) you may be asked to switch factions fully.
Q. What start should I choose?
This all depends on what you want to do with your exp and character! The higher starts have more options due to how you can more your exp, but if you are unsure as to how you want to allocate your exp, you can wait to use it until later. Think about how you would want your character to interact with the world around them and others.
Q. How many skills am I allowed to have?
You can have as many as you want; there is no hard limit on the amount of skills you can have. When you are making skills however, they should be based around your quirk, equipment, manufacturing, or combat related instances. Skills that surround skills and hobbies outside of these uses do not need to be added to your profile.
Site/Roleplay Questions
Q. Are missions the only way to gain EXP?
Missions are the main way to gain EXP but it is not the only way. Site Events are the other way that you can get EXP on the site.
Q. How much edge is too much edge?
We all like the dark occasional back story but try and keep in mind that FFJ is a PG-13 site and does have members at or around that age. Furthermore, there are also players on this site that might've experienced the sort of trauma that you want to explore in your writing. We ask that you try your best to not get too graphic with the details and that you preface your profile/posts with trigger warnings when appropriate.
Q. What do I do if I don’t feel comfortable or able to complete a thread with someone for whatever reason?
Sometimes we don’t always click in our threads as much as we do in IRL or discord. If you ever feel like a thread is just not working out, being kind and courteous about it can go a long way. Simply message the parties involved to let them know that you won’t be able to finish the thread for X or Y reason. If this ever happens please try and be understanding that this person is simply being honest with you and in no way does it reflect how this person feels about you as a person. Sometimes IC characters just don’t match up. It happens.
Q. Is it okay for me to swear in character?
We are a PG-13 site, but you're welcome to swear if you please. Swearing is actually pretty common in our Discord, and we don't really come down on it unless people take it too far. If your character has that sort of aesthetic or personality, you're free to write it out, but if you ever feel as though you're pushing into excessive territory, perhaps a little bit of self-censoring might be in order.
Q. Is it ever okay to make something personal OOC from something that happens ICly?
No. Sometimes things will happen in character that we might not agree with, but it’s never okay to take it out on anyone for personal reasons. If you ever feel like you have been treated unfairly or would like to discuss it, we recommend that you first try and discuss it with all parties involved privately. If you can't settle the dispute amongst yourselves, you can go to a member of staff to have a mediated dialogue to hopefully resolve the situation.
Q. I’m having trouble finding a role play partner...What should I do?
The best advice we can possibly give you is to get involved on Discord. Most people tend not to lurk on the forums looking for open threads. It's much easier to simply pop into the Discord and say that you're looking for people to RP with. Alternatively, you can check the #plot_advertising or #plot_circle channel to see if anyone is looking for an RP partner. If being in large groups isn't your forte, try DMing people from the server with your ideas, especially if you think your character would interact with theirs! Don't be shy, we're all really excited to meet and write with you!
Q. What do I do if my thread partner isn’t responding?
Sometimes people get busy and are unable to write a post. This is something we all must first understand. If you feel like it has gone far past what you could see as a reasonable waiting time, you should DM them first to politely ask if they forgot or if they want their turn to be skipped. If they don't respond to your DM in a timely manner, you should move on and continue or conclude the thread without them or choose to abandon it altogether.
UAU/Student Questions
For information on UAU and students, refer here [o]
Q. Who can work at UAU?
Characters in the factions of Heroes, UAU Faculty and Civilians can work at UAU as staff members (teachers, tutors and specialty substitutes). Students can also work at the school if they have a plausible reason to.
Q. Where can students live?
Due to it being a university, students can choose to live on campus (either alone or with a roommate), at home, or in other lodgings. Dorms are separated as: male, female and non-binary (genderfluid individuals and those that do not identify as the given options go to this dorm).
Q. Do students from different departments get to interact?
Yes, students from different departments will have general classes together, as well as in common areas of the school.
Q. How/when can I graduate?
Whenever you'd like. There is no hard lock keeping your students in school, so if you feel as if you want to leave the university life and have your student become a fully fledged hero, you can do so at any time. Additionally, since you can start off in any year, you can go up a year whenever you see fit. Due to the fact that you will be leaving the safety of UAU however, staff suggests that you try to make your character a bit stronger than when they arrived beforehand.
Q. Is there a dress code for students and staff?
Students have uniforms that they are given and it is mandatory to wear them during classes. When students are in between classes/on campus however, other clothing can be worn. Staff should wear business casual clothing and are given UAU merchandise to accessorize. The clothing items that students can choose from is:
Skirts (short and long), shorts, pants, capri pants, t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts and sweaters. School branded socks, hoodies and hats are also available.
Equipment Questions
For information on equipment, refer here [o]
Q. What are manufacturer's skills for?
These skills allows individuals to design and make items for themselves and others in their specialization. These items can be for everyday use, or can be to help refine and enhance a user's quirks or abilities.
Q. Can I make my own items if I have a manufacturer's skill?
Yes! As long as the items you are making are within the specialization of your skill, you can make it.
Q. What types of specializations are there?
There is no clear list for what the specializations are. As long as you can give staff an argument as to why your character would have such a skill, we will approve it.
Q. Can anyone have a manufacturing skill?
Yes, as long as you have some way of making items, you are able to acquire this skill. If you are struggling, perhaps think about what hobbies or skills your character has and see if this could be added onto in order to make things.
Q. Can pets be equipment?
Yes, if the pet in question is bioengineered and at least A- to account for its autonomy. They cannot have a Quirk either; Quirked animals are only available as PCs and NPCs.
Discord Questions
Q. What are the differences in roles on the sidebar?
Staff consists of: Site Coordinator, Administrator, Moderator, and Junior Moderator. The FFJer role is given to everyone, and faction roles are allocated upon approval. If you see a difference in color from these roles, these people have either achieved it through past site events, or have majorly contributed to the community in some manner.
Q. The Discord is PG-13, but can I swear?
Yes. Again, we ask that you try not to get excessive with it, but you are free to swear.
Q. Are we required to join the discord?
No. There is no requirement to join the Discord, but we highly recommend it. The Discord is the best way to get involved with the community. RPing on FFJ without ever joining the Discord will make your RP experience very difficult. You'll have a significantly harder time finding RP partners, and you'll also have a bit of a difficult time keeping up with all of the IC happenings and changes to site protocol.
Q. What do I do if I have an issue either with a member on-site or in discord?
Sometimes we might not all get along, but we all have a choice in how we handle it. If you can't settle it amongst yourselves privately, you don't feel comfortable with confronting them directly, or you're worried that you might escalate the situation, please seek the attention of a member of staff.
Q. How do I get added to X chat?
There's a helpful little channel called #role-self-assign that you can use to get all of the available roles that you need to gain access to various chats. If you're unable to give yourself a role that you need or you need help removing a role that you have, you can go to the #ask-staff channel.
