Oh, he was just cleaning. That made sense. “Gotcha…” With the mountain of a mess he left for him, it made sense for Gen to pick up a few odd things here or there. He had to expect the strong smell of cleaning products to take over the air, followed by the slightly subtler sounds of his would-be roommate cursing under his breath. Heavy doses of spite and chloride were the only things that could ever hope to get through the miniature landfill that was his room. There were just a couple of problems with those assumptions. One, he didn’t hear so much as a whisper from his roomie, and two, that didn’t smell like no fucking cleaning product he’d ever heard of.[break][break]
Even Elijah’s surprising courtesy of opening the window couldn’t conceal that smell. The scent of charred plastic, fabric and food, mixed into one. “No seriously-” For a moment, he turned his eyes away from the magazine to look at his new janitor, but a moment was all he needed. One of the unfortunate parts of trying to work with freshmen was the undeniable fact that 99.9% were dumb as fucking bricks. Dumb kids, that’s what they were. Could you blame them? Not really, they were quite literally pulled straight out of high school and onto this racket. It was unfair to expect anything else from them. Was Gen still going to resent these first-years for it? You bet your ass he was. That being said, this guy was something else.

Taking a nap in the middle of an exercise was something he could respect. He was an advocate for working smarter, not harder. Where he drew the line was at being lazy for the sake of it. There had to be an edge to gain from all the corners you were cutting. That was the difference between being smart and being a bum. This guy was definitely the latter. He had also wasted precious minutes of his life by making him think he was the real deal, which made Gen feel a bit embarrassed, but that had nothing to do with his reaction, I swear.

“Oh great, you’re one of those.” The realization was quick to dawn on him. The inky-black liquid covering him would soon fade, giving way to human skin, a faux fur coat, and a smug smile on his lips. A pair of brown eyes would roll in annoyance. “Yeah, and you’re just so cool for flunking Supercop school. Real badass stuff right there.” Leaning against the back of a couch, Gen would look down upon his opponent as if he were no more than an insect. “Tell me, is this your way of ‘fighting the power’ or are you just another useless nepotism hire who knows he doesn’t need to work?” [break][break]

The confirmation he was looking for. It wasn’t a panicked attack or a shitty monologue, but it would have to do. From the other side of the door, Gen’s ears would pick up the sound of his opponent’s phone bouncing across the floor. Going with a silent Quirk for scouting would prove to be the right call. Now that he had his location, all he needed to do was make an entrance.[break][break]
If Zenkai wanted to use the darkness to get some shut-eye, then he was in for a rude awakening. Almost as soon as it appeared, the blinding shroud that had enveloped the room would begin to dissipate. The rays of sun would slowly begin to filter through the windows. At the center of the apartment, the impenetrable darkness converged on itself, like water circling a recently unplugged drain. However, it would not disappear, not completely at least.[break][break]
With each second that passed by, the shadowy veil that had first covered the room would begin to change. What was first a silent intangible cloud would begin to condense into a venomous ooze that bubbled rapidly, threatening to consume anything it touched. Then, the liquid would take shape. First, a pair of legs, then a torso, some hands, a head. With the sound of a thousand tiny bones snapping in unison, a stark-white grin, dripping with malice. It looked human, but at the same time, something about it looked… off. A black hole made in the image of a man, devoid of any human compassion or emotion.[break][break]
“Hatake-san, right?” Ten different voices addressed the young man, all with distinct pitches, cadences and emotions composing them, but all carrying the same message. Some sounded like a ghost calling out their name in hushed whispers, others sounded like ear-piercing screams, one was filled with anger, and among that chorus, one of them actually sounded like the real Gen.[break][break]

That’s weird. By now, most people would be giving him an earful. At the very least, he expected him to mouth off some curses his way. Now this, this was entertainment! Tempers flared, fighting words were tossed from every direction, and now, the first hand was thrown. Sparks were flying from these kids, literally. And all they needed was for the mastermind to give them a little push in the right direction and.. BAM! They’re at their throats. Ice, consider yourself broken.
Still, he would have to wait. It wasn’t the right time. He needed more information. He had their group dynamic somewhat figured out. He even had two of these kids almost figured out. The angry one’s gauntlets were the easiest to counter. Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and Gen had just the tool to deal with that.

The meek one would take a bit longer to solve. That punch was not as strong as it should’ve been. For most people, getting socked with a steaming hot metal glove would suck ass,no matter who was using it. You wouldn’t just take it on the chin like a champ, you’d fall like a sack of potatoes! Especially scrawny little shits like this one. More than that, his first instinct wasn’t to run away or to punch back, it was to grab onto the glove. The literally smoking hot one. A Quirk was probably the answer. Higher endurance wasn’t exactly an uncommon side effect, there were a lot of ways one could get thicker skin, especially when you account for mutations. Could be a useful trick to add to his repertoire.

Main reason he didn’t show his face was the girl. Slander had prevented her from leaving, but there were still too many questions left unanswered. What was her Quirk? How did she fight? Long range? Short range? Matter manipulation? Speed? Strength? Was it one of the fabled Bullshit Quirks? It was too big a risk to reveal himself for the moment. Thankfully, he had just the trick to once again push these kids into the right direction.

Nothing could prepare Elijah for what was waiting for him on the other side of that door. Not the tragic accident that left him orphaned, not the years of propaganda about the greatness of Heroes, not the countless speeches about how tough and serious college was, and definitely not the entrance exam. The sight was enough to shatter any lofty expectations he could’ve ever built up about U.A. as an instition, as well as those who attended it.[break][break]
What stood before the newest member of the Heroics Department was a landfill that just so happened to be surrounded by a dorm room. A carpet of cans and all sorts of crap rolled out of the room to welcome him as some of the trash began to flow out of the room. It was like someone had just upended the contents of a garbage truck onto the room. I mean, it was nasty, dude. [break][break]
Just from standing outside the door, Elijah could see countless candy wrappers strewn about the room, from the tinfoil used to cover chocolate bars, to empty bags of chips and crumbs everywhere. In the back, he could see a mountain of dishes, looking over this wasteland. Which was strange, considering that the place had a shared kitchen with a dishwasher equipped. Whoever his roommate was had to get all of these plates into this room, and then refuse to send them back at any point. Impressively unkempt was definitely a word to describe this.[break][break]
Off to the side, he could spot a sea of dirty laundry pushed to one half of the room. As if that weren’t enough, he could spot random socks left on every piece of furniture. Some hung on the edges of the bed frames, whilst others were just lying atop both bedside tables, and… wait, was there one on the ceiling fan? What the fuck? How did that even get there, what?[break][break]
Before anyone could ever hope to piece this mess together, Elijah would be greeted by the man behind all of this. “You’re the new guy, right? Eli… something.” The voice came from one of the beds, where a young man around Elijah’s age was currently flipping through this week’s edition of Weekly Shonen Jump. “Make yourself at home… if you can.” Should the Canadian turn towards the other side of the room, he’d find that the spare bed had been recently turned into an impromptu dinner table. With a half-finished plate of pizza, an empty bag of cookies and countless crumbs littered atop it.[break][break]

Alright, back to business. Getting to see her was definitely a plus, but Gen had some business to tend to. Torturing his group of first-years, scouting the rest of the freshmen, and oh yeah, that roommate was supposed to show up in a few days. “Shit.” In a biting twist of irony, Zenkai’s low-effort approach to this whole affair would turn out to be the correct one. “He’s laying low. Out of sight.” Granted, it was for all the wrong reasons, but from down in the first floor, Gen had no way of knowing that. “He’s good.” With a sigh, the sophomore came to the worst possible conclusion all-too-quickly. A pessimist at heart, he didn’t have the luxury of hoping for the best. [break][break]
Great. Now he had to actually enter the building, check every fucking floor and make sure to suss out for traps around every corner. These were all risks he did not enjoy taking, especially when he knew jack shit about his opponent’s Quirk or fighting style. Still, time was of the essence, and he had already wasted plenty. “What a pain in the ass”, he mouthed to himself as he stepped through the doors to the building. His Quirk made sure to camouflage his movements, placing a visual and auditory illusion of an empty street wherever he walked.[break][break]
Seeing as his opponent hadn’t set anything to wait for him at the lobby, Gen began climbing through the staircase. Elevators were death traps just waiting to be sprung, so he’d have to take the long way around. He couldn’t take his chances, not with this guy.[break][break]
And so, Gen carefully walked through every floor, checking every corner and making sure to send a double through every door, and every time, he found nothing. Not an explosion, not an ambush, not even a clever little one-liner. Zero, zilch, nada. That’s what he was getting. This all served to feed his rampant paranoia. Every empty room just made the chances of something waiting in the next one. Even if Zen had no intention on killing him, the suspense he had inadvertently built up certainly was.[break][break]
And so, Gen would keep climbing step after step of this ominous apartment. After a few floors, the perimeter sweep had taken quite a toll, both on his mind and his body. “Man… I really need… huff-to work on my cardio.” Still, after catching his breath, he’d press onwards, swallowing any traces of fear that might come with whatever came next.[break][break]
Sooner rather than later, though, Gen would strike gold. Zenkai’s little stroll through social media would hit the snag he was waiting for. Suddenly, all the lights in the room would go dark. No, that wasn’t quite it. It wasn’t even noon, and yet, he couldn’t even see the palm of his hand. The roof, the floor, the bomb, even his phone, pitch-black darkness had enveloped the space around the future Sun Wukong. An ill-omen that heralded the arrival of his opponent, like a set of ominous gray clouds before a storm.[break][break]

“I… see.” Gen wasn’t exactly shocked to hear that Jun wasn’t really into MTG. As she just said, her love of 80k came down mostly to painting figures and bonding with her family. Every move she made, in and out of games, made it clear she wasn’t exactly up for such a mentally taxing game. She was neither the most tactically nor strategically sound person out there. At least, that was the boy’s totally unbiased view of her. Still, hearing about seeing that game as nothing more than paperweights and pretty picture almost made him break out some remark targeted at her intelligence, or lack thereof. [break][break]
Case in point, the issue about terrain. “Nakamura” had no earthly idea about point limits and the like, so he’d have to go along with whatever rules Jun put forth. However, even under that disguise, Gen couldn’t help but show off how clever he was, especially in front of his so-called colleague. “I got a few textbooks and some stuff for lunch, maybe we could use that?” Spotting his window to close in, the alleged business school student would sit down on the opposite end of the table, making the place his new home.[break][break]
Unzipping the bag he had slung over his shoulder, the young man would produce a series of items to serve as cover. Namely, a half-finished pepsi bottle, a can of Monster Energy, and an unopened pack of chocolate chip cookies to serve as cover. “When I played at my friend’s house, we just used what we had lying around for terrain. Usually just cups n’ stuff.” Next up was a stack of textbooks, placed on one half of the table, serving as a plateau of sorts. “What do you think, Kanjo-senpai?”[break][break]

Being a college student came with a lot of benefits that were sadly out of reach for any mere high schooler. Now that they weren’t minors, the school had way less to worry about in terms of keeping track of these idiots. As long as it was legal, they could do whatever the hell they wanted: they could skip classes just cause, be as late as they want, they could hang out at campus with no one bothering them, and, if you were really lame and had literally nothing better to do with your life, you could attend extra classes.[break][break]
That probably explained why Kurokami Gen was seen auditing more classes than other seniors. It wasn’t an everyday type of thing—even he wasn’t that pathetic—but every once in a while, he’d pop into a first-year’s class, pretend to listen, sign-up for a practical exercise, rig the draw, and fight whatever freshman he chose. And that’s how he ended up running a bomb drill with one of the newcomers, some loser called Zenkai Hatake.[break][break]
Now of course, Gen wasn’t doing this to try to help the new guys or try to better himself as a Hero, no, fuck that noise! You think Mister “All for One” here gave a flying fuck about the newest generation of Heroes? He had two great reasons for blessing these newbies with his presence. The first was that it allowed him to make sure that a certain trio would keep getting placed in the same teams, and the second was… well, why spoil the surprise now?[break][break]
As the class was divided into teams, Gen was briefed on the rules of the game. Inside a small apartment building on Ground Beta, his opponent would be waiting for him with a bomb in their possession. This Zenkai was to play the part of the villain, one Gen would’ve felt better suited for. The exercise would end once either the “Hero” disarmed the bomb by pressing one of the buttons attached to it, or until the time limit ran out, which would give Zenkai the win. Before the buzzer could mark the start of this adorable facade, Gen made sure to check on his gear as he kept an eye on the windows of the place, trying to discern any information he could about the whereabouts of this so-called criminal.[break][break]

“W-Wow, that’s… a lot.” She could see the gears turning in his mind as he tried to picture five whole armies splayed out on a living room table. “I mean, five, woah.” With a shake of his head, he returned to reality.[break][break]

Whilst the trio argued back-and-forth, a pair of brown eyes looked over them within earshot. Through a truly Herculean feat of restraint, their owner was able to hold back a wave of laughter as he witnessed this quarrel unfold before him. He hadn’t even shown up and they were already riled up, and they were just a few words away from beating the everloving shit out of each other. Even he couldn’t have planned such a good start. Unfortunately, that would be all. A small misunderstanding, one that highlighted their personalities to perfection. Luca was your garden variety hothead, his head a powder keg too unstable for anyone without a psych degree to dare defuse; Takara was the clever one, even if she was almost as self-obsessed as the one holding this facade; and Akagi was the glue that would hold these two problematic personalities together. In that respect, he was doing too good a job in one senpai’s eyes. [break][break]
If they were to be left to their devices, then this would be as far as they went. Akagi would’ve defused Takara’s self-indulgent drama, whilst probably getting an earful from the brawl. This just wouldn’t do. Their senior needed to see some sparks flying, and I don’t just mean tension, I mean real Quirk-induced sparks. So unfortunately for the white-haired freshman, he would soon have the displeasure of hearing his own voice undoing his good work. [break][break]
It wouldn’t take much to set Luca off, from the looks of it. It was all a matter of timing. His ears would need to hear the wrong thing at the right time. With practiced precision, Gen would launch an illusion near the Junkdog’s ears. [break][break]

Akagi’s voice echoed with a level of spite that had yet to be seen before, and unfortunately, it wouldn’t be the last time they would hear it. As Takara turned away from this conversation, she could hear the white-haired boy shooting one last remark her way. With her, the man behind the curtain needed precision, thankfully, he knew just where to strike.[break][break]

After 21 excruciating days biding his time, the first week of this semester had been an incredible success for one Kurokami Gen. This loose collection of character defects had come out of the gates swinging with one of his best schemes yet, and so far, it had gone off without a hitch. His fellow sophomore, Jun, had been baited into taking part in a proxy war; the light of his life had agreed to sponsor his side, guaranteeing his win; and the three freshmen… well, they were a work in progress, but it was nothing a few months of torture training couldn't fix.

After a few weeks on campus, word was starting to spread, not of the contest, but of the heartless All for One’s transparent interest in a group of three freshmen. Toshigawa Takara, Reijiro Akagi, and Itadori Luca. All, by design, of course. Discretion was not a word in Gen’s vocabulary. An instigator by nature, this piece of human garbage wasted no time circulating the rumors himself. By the time the second week had passed, word had traveled high and low, even managing to escape the confines of the Heroics Department. It wouldn’t take long for it to reach the ears of other interested parties.

If anyone wanted to reach him, well, they didn’t need to look for long. As it turned out, the son of a bitch just so happened to be standing around one of the many hallways, eyeing a poster promoting a future showing by U.A. University’s film club. Satoshi Kon’s Paprika. He made a mental note to torrent it for later. He couldn’t wait to see what she made of it. With a smug grin painted on his lips, he began to walk away, blissfully unaware of anyone who might want to punch him, or worse, talk. [break][break]
