A snide, cynical and foul-tempered little shit. An unfortunate life combined with his own self-isolating attitude and pride has made Matsuda a thoroughly vitriolic young man. He has little more than utter contempt to spare for the vast majority of humanity, a toxicity that he is barely able to contain enough to function alongside other people at all, his cowardice being the only trait that limits his barbed tongue from cutting into everyone around him freely, as he is far too adverse to true conflict to actually suffer the consequences for his opinions of those around him. He constantly bites back his lashing tongue, forces himself to be quiet and angrily tolerates a world that he wants absolutely nothing to do with because the alternative is not an option to him. This has left him in a state of constant seething, boiling with rage and contempt that he dares not express. He's a violent person at his core. Comes with the aforementioned rage, really. Were it not tempered by the very same cowardice that keeps him from speaking up against those that annoy him (that's everyone...) Matsuda would already have begun to prove his supposed superiority over those around him by the edge of one of his knives. He often thinks about it, getting lost in gruesome revenge fantasies and morbid thoughts of harming others. But, again, the potential consequences have left him too fearful to truly act on them, instead taking out these impulses on things much weaker than him who are less likely to cause him grief due to their deaths - primarily small animals. Rodents, cats and such, the butchered bodies of which often appear near his home. It gives him a sense of satisfaction and a rush of power, to be able to hold the life of another creature in his hand, and to put it out whenever he pleases. Feeds into his ego, really. And boy, what an ego that is. Crystallizing in the middle of an intricate web of complexes and terrible coping mechanisms for unaddressed trauma, Matsuda's mind is one of both astronomical self-worship and abyssal self-loathing. He is fanatically insecure, bouncing between seeing himself as the perfect, most intelligent man alive who is only tolerating all of the subhumans around him out of the goodness of his heart and attacking himself as worthless scum that does not even deserve his life let alone anything worthwhile in it. He routinely practices self harm, and often seems to seek out ways to punish himself for the act of existing, yet he still holds on to his view of everyone else as inherently even more worthless than he is, dumber, more short-sighted and even less deserving than himself. His hatred and spite is all-encompassing, and he himself does not enjoy mercy from its wrath. So with that in mind, maybe it is not so strange that the one thing that can clear the overcast of Matsuda's universal misanthropy is... Basic acknowledgement. His brain is constantly working overtime to push his pride into the stratosphere, because his own thoughts is the only positive reinforcement that he has received in his entire life. As such, treating him with genuine respect, making him actually feel seen and giving him that affirmation that he has never received anywhere else is a surefire way to awaken another of Matsuda's traits - a diehard sense of loyalty. It is rare to happen, considering his prickly nature, snide attitude and the many walls he puts up, but once Matsuda actually believes in another person and genuinely sees them as a positive presence in his life, he would die for them. Starving for that positive attention, he will throw himself wholeheartedly at such a person, quickly growing incredibly attached, perhaps to an obsessive degree. Maintaining this new enjoyable presence becomes his new highest priority, and he can easily grow both unhealthily codependent and frenetically jealous. He will grow terrified of losing this new person in his life, and seeing how easily he can flip into bouts of self-questioning that make him view anything as a sign of rejection, well... The results oftentimes aren't pretty. Finally, he has a rather strange relationship with the concept of families. Having never had one himself, it is something that he both desires greatly and hates others for having, and being exposed to healthy or happy family dynamics is one of the easiest ways to have him easily turn extraordinarily angry and spiteful, even by his usual standards. Still, he can't help but to long for his idealized image of what such a thing means, and he can easily project familial relationship dynamics onto those he grows attached to where they aren't warranted. He will look for guidance or companionship in the way one would from a mother, father or sibling, and while he would never use those words to describe what he is doing, it is rather unmistakable for those who recognize it. To go with this he also has a rather fierce fixation on his biological mother, a woman that he never met and barely knows anything about, but that he has created an angelic, idealized image of in his own head, perhaps from a belief that if she had lived, his life would not be what it is today. He blames himself for her passing, and routinely makes trips to her grave to grieve. It is ironic, that out of the many deaths that he will eventually be responsible for, the only one that causes him any regret is the one that was not his fault. Matsuda stands with a slender build, with brown hair that he kept haphazardly cut short enough to not get in the way of his vision but cares little to maintain otherwise, with sharp red eyes and pointed, angular features that leaves him slightly on the androgynous side, a "pretty boy" that if nothing else could be considered easy on the eyes. What ruins it is the permanent scowl that rests on his face and the disdain that burns in his eyes, condescension and spite dripping off the man in ways that make his specific brand of smug bitterness impossible to miss and to ignore. You do not need to let him speak to know how lowly Matsuda thinks of you, his rotten gaze tells the whole story. He does not like to look at himself, and thus covers up his own body rather extensively. He prefers darker hues, with black slacks, matching shoes and a black fur-lined jacket being go-to articles of clothing in his wardrobe, to which he often adds one of several buttoned shirts in different shades of red, mauve or gray, with t-shirts adding an additional layer under the buttonup. Desiring to obscure his figure from his own and others' gaze, he often layers to this degree no matter the season, something which often leaves him overheated during the summer. Under these clothes, Matsuda is marked with a network of various scars, some small, some more immediately obvious. A handful are reminders of particularly excessive abuse directed his way, but many more are self-inflicted, his arms and legs extensively marked up while his biceps and shoulders feature several small, distinct, crescent moon-shaped marks. He digs his nails into his own arms when stressed, it is a habit that he is working on ridding himself of. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]HISTORY Death defined him from the moment he was born. A combination of unfortunate circumstances led to the existence of Matsuda Tsuuka. The result of a quick, party-fueled tryst with a man that his mother never learned the name of, his father was gone long before she realized that she was pregnant. Going on from there, his delivery was a complicated one and for a plethora of health-related reasons, it ended up an incident that proved fatal to his mother and that he himself just barely survived. With one parent dead and the other unaccounted for, and his maternal family wanting nothing to do with him, Matsuda was given up to the system, and as soon as he was old enough he was handed over to the Lion's Embrace orphanage. This, as it turned out, would be the worst possible thing that could have happened to him. Early on, it grew increasingly obvious that Lion's Embrace was a farce. With complacent if not outright negligent staff, little to no oversight and a bottom-of-the-barrel standard of care for their children, the inmates very much ran this asylum - The children and teenagers raised at Lion's Embrace did as they pleased with little to no regulation or moderation, cliques ruled the day and, as soon as the rumor of the circumstances behind Matsuda's lack of parents began to circulate, the cruelty of youth quickly found something to lack on to. "Mother-killer", was the title his younger self had to grow accustomed to, and from there came ostracization, regular torment of lesser and greater kinds, from childish pranks that would be nothing grave if they were not repeated forever, obvious scorn and isolation, shoves and minor violence, and in a few cases being shoved down stairs and over ledges, something that broke more than one bone. Life in Lion's Embrace was hell for him, and as his tormentors attended the same school as him, this carried on wherever he went, the infection soon spreading into the student body as a whole. Caught between those partaking in the torment, those too fearful or passive to do anything and entirely absent or negligent adults, the early phases of Matsuda's life were fundamentally loveless, loveless and lonely. This embittered him, made him a volatile, angry and venomous child. He lashed out, and he grew distrustful of everyone in his surroundings, and he isolated himself. These tendencies fed into his already present loneliness as he moved up the grades, his behavior too ornery and aggravated for him to connect with new peers in middle or high school. In fact his irritable, snide and easily provoked personality made him even more of a target for those of such dispositions, which only made him angrier and as a result his behavior grew worse, which only did more to drive those around him away, or to harass him further. The ouroboros ate its own tail, and the cycle only did more to poison the mind of the developing young man. He bought his first blade when he was fourteen years old. For what exact purpose Matsuda did not know, perhaps being armed made him feel stronger, even if he never dared to use it. Perhaps it was simply a way to humor the morbid thoughts that had begun to drip their way into his mind, thoughts of violence and bloody vengeance towards all those who had wronged him, which he never worked up the nerve to follow through on. Instead he found a habit of turning it unto himself, the spite displayed towards him now long-since internalized. Still, his rage only continued to build, and it did so alongside his increasingly bloody thoughts of his similarly aged peers. He was a ticking time bomb, and it was only a matter of time until he was going to blow. So, eventually, it came. A particular school day, things carried on as they always did, he was lonely, he took the jeers and the japes of his peers, he took the sideway glances and the whispers. Then he was tripped, fell on his face, and he saw red. He turned towards the laughing teenager in question, and he leapt onto him. Screams intermixed, he was fairly sure that he bit into flesh at some point, metal glinted, an edge slashed skin. When he realized what had come over him and he took a step back, bloodied weapon in his hand, he had realized what had occurred. He was sixteen years old, having cut another classmate. Rage was replaced with panic in an instant and, not knowing what else to do, he went for the nearest exit and he ran. He ran away, into the city and he disappeared into the vast population of Tokyo, not daring to show his face anywhere near his school or Lion's Embrace again. He was terrified, and he vanished entirely. Matsuda would spend the next year a vagrant, homeless and relying on robberies, petty theft and the rare goodwill of others to survive, something that he would despise and deride as 'empty charity', expecting only cruelty at this point from a world that had delivered him nothing but. His memory of this entire time is a blur, but this was when he began to take out his many frustrations on smaller animals, delivering his need for power and control over his life unto stray cats, rodents and other city animals. He would carve these creatures, finding a certain delight in finally having authority over something, even if it was the life of a helpless, innocent animal. And somehow he would eventually luck himself into a job, seeing a poster advertising help needed at a local 7/11 store. Washing himself off the best he could on a beach and impossibly managing to talk himself into the position he would begin stocking shelves, making barely passable money, but it was money, which was something he had never had before. From there he was even able to find a cheap apartment, rented out by a less than reputable type in Tokyo's worst corners, but an apartment all the same. He had a home, and he had an income, but that was also all that he had. In this young man there was nothing else left, except that hollow, rotten rage, building up again as he began to fall back into a mundane routine, finally becoming a legal adult but no less wounded, no less wrathful. Once again, he had been wound up, a time bomb, ticking away... The next time, the bang might very well be something far more dangerous. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]ITEMS Blades: They make him feel very cool and strong. Matsuda has a fascination with weapons, and he usually carries two of them with him at most times - a balisong and a switchblade. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]QUIRK: SHATTER QUIRK RANK: C+ QUIRK TYPE: Emitter QUIRK DESCRIPTION: Shatter is the ability to manipulate, reshape and control glass in one's surroundings. Through the application of his quirk, Matsuda is able to extend his senses out into surrounding glass materials, which then gives him complete command over all glass within range. For simplicity, his quirk can be broken down into two boons, Glass Control and Glass Sense. Glass Control is the most straightforward and the most obvious aspect of Shatter. It is, well, exactly what it sounds like. By willing it so, Matsuda is able to make any and all glass within his range fly through the air, crack into pieces, reshape itself by filing away microfilaments of it and so on. He is also able to "harden" the glass in his control, not by literally making it harder but by mentally forcing it to hold together when it otherwise would not, allowing his glass to cut through much stronger materials that it otherwise would not be able to, or to act as shields for himself and others. The speed, precision, cutting power, durability and "lifting strength" - that is, how much other material he can lift by stabbing his glass into it and hovering it upwards, or by placing an object on a pane of glass that he controls - of his glass are all derived from his quirk rank. The Glass Sense, then, is the medium that allows him to do all of these things. Basically, Matsuda possesses a form of sixth sense that simply makes him aware of any and all glass within the range of his quirk. He will then extend his own consciousness through this glass sense, in order to make his glass control function. Beyond the basic fundamentals of making his quirk work at all, the Glass Sense also gives Matsuda a few more utility tricks that might not be immediately obvious. For example, he would be able to jab a glass shard into something and then let that shard stay lodged in, in order to track whatever he stabbed, or he might cover an area in powdered glass and feel the shifts of this powder to counter stealth tactics or an invisibility power. He could also spread a coating of glass shards on the ground in a hallway, or other passageway that he wishes safeguarded, since he would be able to feel when someone steps on those shards and thus alert him of their passing. For as simple and straightforward as this quirk is, it does offer a certain amount of versatility. QUIRK DRAWBACKS: First of all, the most obvious problem - Matsuda has no way to create glass of his own. He is therefore very reliant on his surroundings and what he carries with him, needing to ensure that the one material that his quirk works on is actually present around him. If there is no glass for him to use, he might as well be quirkless. Besides this, there's also the matter of the aforementioned Glass Sense. As noted, Matsuda's quirk functions by him projecting his consciousness through an additional sense that he possesses, and thus controlling glass around him as an extension of his own body. In and of itself this is not a terrible thing, but when used by an already unraveling mind, it means that Matsuda can and often does suffer from bouts of disassociation when using his quirk. It is often hard for him to tell where his body ends and where his glass begins, meaning that using his quirk for purposes such as shielding himself will often be more difficult than he might like, and he can easily waste valuable time in battle dodging or weaving away from attacks meant for his glass, believing that he would get injured if he did not evade. Furthermore, while he can in theory control all the glass within the range of his Glass Sense, this is not perfect and it can be overwhelmed. If he was faced with a truly astounding amount of different glass objects being sent his way, he could easily find himself unable to take command of all of it, his ailing mind stretched too far and leading to a mental break and exhaustion without any demonstrable result. On a related note, the more glass he is controlling at once, the sloppier, slower and more imprecise with it he will grow, as each piece of glass can be compared to a new extension of his body that he needs to devote effort to moving around.
