Shame knotted in Tobias's throat as the unusual man simply replied that it was quite normal for people to be afraid of him. That was enough to give Tobias pause-- as was the man's cheerful disregard for the strangeness of the whole situation. Fear dulled to simple disquiet.
The other man stood, tentacles shaking free of the plastic balls. He stood head-and-shoulders over Tobias, his tentacles writhing hypnotically around him. Tobias stared, longer than would have been considered polite. The other man confessed that he hadn't seen where Tobias had fallen from, which... meant that Tobias would have to put forth more of an effort to find a door, he supposed.
"That complicates things," Tobias sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He could always burn through the safety net, but... if this was some sort of pocket-dimension, and he accidentally set fire to the Hugh E. Ham's on the outside, too, the cost of the collateral damage would be problematic for his agency, and for heroes at-large. He couldn't risk endangering the bystanders that were there. He'd have to just... search. The peculiar gentleman took stock of his surroundings, reaching the same conclusion that Tobias already had-- that this place was entirely too large.
"It does, sir," Tobias patiently agreed, "Much bigger. I'm sure it's quirk-related. Most unusual situations are..."
Tobias moved carefully along the edge of the ball pit, lacing and unlacing his fingers from the safety net that contianed it.
"And my name isn't 'Alice', sir," Tobias said, his tone conversational, "I'm Detective Murakami, with the Ouros A- ack!"
As Tobias took a step, his foot slipped through a hole in the base of the ball pit. It was as if a plug had been pulled from the drain in a tub-- for as soon as Tobias's foot slipped, the balls began to filter through the hole, sinking around him. Tobias clung desperately to the net, trying to hoist his legs up onto solid ground, or at least hook them into the net, but found nothing.
"O-oh God. Oh God--"
The plastic balls continued to drain through the hole, and as wild eyes swept to the world beyond the ball-pit, Tobias wondered if there was nothing more than a void beyond the ball-pit-- if a fall would mean his demise.
"W-watch out for holes-!" Tobias insisted, his tone quavering. Each time his foot found flat ground, it would erode beneath his foot as soon as Tobias put pressure upon it, opening the hole even wider before, causing the torrent of balls to increase.

A dull ache pulsed in Tobias's shoulders and neck as he sat up, his cheek sticking to the surface of his desk. As he looked blearily around, he realized that this wasn't his study at home, but his office at work-- a not uncommon occurence. He groaned, reached for his insulated mug, and took a sip. A grimace crossed Tobias's features-- cold tea.
Tobias reached for his electric kettle, giving it an experimental shake. The kettle sloshed hollowly. It was a dire situation, to be sure. The detective rose stiffly from his seat, clutching the kettle in one hand. He paused at a small mirror mounted on the wall, running a hand through his hair. It still stood at odd angles from being pushed against the crook of Tobias's arm. He checked his watch-- well, most of the agency's members wouldn't be in for a while. No one around to witness his rumpled appearance.
The detective set-out from his office, groggily pushing his glasses up to rub the sleep from his eyes. When his glasses fell back into place, he beheld two of his coworkers in the break area-- Pavlina-san and... Dos Santos-san. And here Toby was, looking like a slob. No tie, top button of his shirt undone, hair rumpled--
Tobias froze, his expression blank as his mind processed what his eyes beheld. What... what were they doing here... so early...? He checked his watch again. Yes, they were really here that early. Tobias cleared his throat, offering a gravelly, "Good morning."
His embarrassment making him short-spoken, Tobias offered a shallow bow to the two of them before moving towards the sink to fill his kettle, hiding his flushed face in the process.

Tobias deposited his coat onto an unoccupied chair, breathing a steadying sigh as he stepped towards the mouth of the play structure. He was a broad-shouldered man, taller than the average Japanese man and certainly taller than the average Japanese child. With a glance, he knew that it would be a tight squeeze. But… it had to be done. Removing his shoes, he set them with his coat, and in his socks, slacks, shirt and tie, the redhead clambered into the plastic tunnel.
The progress was slow-going. His shoulders bumped against the curved walls, and periodically he’d bump his head against the top of the tunnel. Tobias could barely even lift his head. The noise of the play-place faded, muffled as he crawled deeper. The ground turned upwards slightly, and he began to climb in earnest.
He found a rhythm– or, at least, he thought he did– a method for crawling where he didn’t jostle himself every step of the way. No– that wasn’t accurate, he hadn’t changed anything about how he was crawling–
The tunnel was getting larger.
What more, he could no longer hear the sounds of the arcade behind him.
It was silent.
And, for some unknown reason, it smelled of tea.
Tobias could feel his stomach clenching with nerves. He had to get out of here before he caused any sort of collateral damage. Just back the way he came, right? Tobias began scooting backwards down the tunnel, trying to keep his breath steady. He could create some lie about forgetting some tool in his coat or wanting a bit of string to help him find his way back… some paltry excuse to help save face.
He had been crawling for a while– then, his leg found open air– knocked off-balance by the sudden unforeseen loss of ground, Tobias toppled out of the tunnel legs first, landing in the very same ball pit with an undignified yelp, and a rather fantastic explosion of plastic balls.
I didn’t make any turns– that should have taken me towards the exit–
Wild gray eyes swung towards the sky above, and saw only the safety-net. It was like he had been dropped out of thin air.
Tobias glanced around the ball pit, and saw that he was not in fact alone, either. Though he would later deign to admit it, Tobias flinched, startled by the unforeseen company.
“I-I b-beg your pardon, you… you scared the devil out of me!” Tobias gasped, clutching his chest, “Wasn’t… wasn’t expecting there to be anyone else here.”
His eyes trailed upward again. Tobias tried to stand up, wobbling to the safety-net on the sides of the ball pit– perhaps he could yell to one of the others, like an officer– to get further directions on where to go.
Where an entire arcade and dining area should have been, however, there was simply an unending maze of tunnels and slides and climbing structures as far as the eye could see.
“...this makes no sense, not a lick of sense,” Tobias murmured. He looked upwards again, then around the edges of the ball pit. There were no doors anywhere. Was he going to die in this godforsaken play-structure? He had to get out of here! Or so help him, he would die trying!
…and, if he found the kid along the way, that would be an immense help.
“Excuse me, sir–” Tobias turned towards the rather peculiar looking gentleman, “Did you perchance see how I got here…?”
There had to have been some doorway... and if he could enter through that doorway, then... he could exit, too, right?

Tobias was all but gasping for air when another voice replied to him from further into the house. An immediate answer, containing the other investigators full name, was given. The redhead moved cautiously towards the voice, and nearly bumped into the man he assumed it belonged to. The two were of a similar stature and dress– though this man’s appearance seemed rather like the oni of Japanese folklore. The only indication that Tobias was quirked was the rivulets of gold that twisted over every square inch of his body.
“Pardon me, Detective Moore,” Tobias said with a bow, “I’m Tobias Murakami, I’m with Ouros Agency. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Feeling rather awkward about the whole kerfuffle, the detective was reluctant to stay– someone was already assigned to the job, after all, and it wasn’t a very shrewd use of resources…
“Oh, it’s no trouble,” Tobias was quick to reassure Mr. Moore, bowing again, “I apologize for intruding upon an investigation that was already underway…”
Even if it was just for a microwave.
The other man seemed to handle the mistake with grace, extending a hand towards Tobias as a sort of peace-offering. Well, what the hell– dispatch still hadn’t gotten back to him regarding the mess-up, and the cantankerous old man was likely still keeping watch just beyond the front door… Tobias might as well lend a hand, particularly if Mr. Moore was amicable to the help.
Tobias clasped Moore’s hand in his own, exchanging a resolute handshake with him.
“What have you found so far-?” Tobias asked, not wanting to overstep or be redundant. Steely grey eyes roved over the countertops of the kitchen, and over the ground, sweeping for any hints of mischief. It was... incredibly clean, spare the absence of an obvious microwave.

The redhead’s grip tightened on the steering wheel, the leather of the grip groaning beneath the skin of his palm. While Tobias knew that he couldn’t reasonably avoid returning to the field forever, there was still a thrill of nerves that ran through him with each and every call. Even with the agency giving him “easy” cases, his heart would still leap into his throat every time they sent him out. Even an innocuous case could be his last. Today’s ventures brought him to the outskirts of the Kiyashi Ward Mall– a sprawling open-air facility with numerous floors of shops, restaurants, and entertainment. Tobias banked right off of the street and into the parking lot, peering through the front windshield to the business he had been summoned to. It was a squat, nondescript beige building, separate from the mall itself. Over its main entrance was a neon sign, unlit in the midday sun, that read “Hugh E. Ham’s”, over which the garish, grinning face of a cartoon pig stared vacuously over the parking lot. Tobias sighed, pulling down an adjoining parking lot aisle into a vacant spot, turning the keys in the ignition. The business was an indoor playground and arcade, geared to elementary-aged children. That, on its own, was fine– but the prevalence of farm animal mascots, in both costumed character and animatronic forms– was less than ideal. But… he had a job to do– an “easy” job, per the person at Ouros who had assigned him with the job. And he’d be damned if he’d fail at an easy job. Tobias emerged from the company car, locking the door behind him and pocketing the keys. He would pause for only a moment outside of the main entrance, popping an antacid into his mouth, before pushing through the entrance doors. Sights, sounds, and smells immediately assaulted the detective’s senses, causing his expression to pucker into barely-contained disgust. The shrill, conflicting sounds of arcade machines, the scent of hot-dogs (their specialty) and other fair-themed food, and the shrieks of children both delighted and infuriated. Underneath it all, there was also a sickly smell, attempted to be drowned-out by bleach but still noticeably present. “Welcome to Hugh E. Ham’s, sir,” a chipper attendant greeted, offering Tobias a smile fraught with orthodontic work, “How may I assist you?” Tobias pulled a leather wallet from his waist, flashing his badge and ID to the overzealous teen, “I’m Detective Murakami– I was called here about a missing child?”“Oh, yes sir– please proceed to the small playground, down the hall to the left-” Tobias nodded his thanks, proceeding through a white picket gate into the play-area. He dodged hapless children and bustling parties, keeping to the edge of the room until he found the hallway indicated by the front-desk clerk. Video games were interspersed all throughout the establishment in neat little rows, sprawling out from a massive jungle-gym in its midst. Children climbed and scurried through the mazes of play-equipment, chattering excitedly amongst themselves. In the midst of the chaos, Tobias’s suit-and-tie looked incredibly out-of-place. As he approached the small playground, he noticed a small gathering of people– a few employees of the establishment, a police officer, and a plain-clothes woman with an anxious expression. “Good afternoon,” Tobias greeted as he approached, bowing to the group, “Detective Murakami, from the Ouros Agency.”He flashed his badge again before pocketing it. The police officer stepped towards Tobias, offering a brief, “It’s a pleasure, Detective. I’m Officer Fujioka.” “Likewise, miss. What happened?”“Ms. Mizutani brought her son, Tadashi, here for a friend’s birthday party,” the officer explained, “When it came time to go, however, she couldn’t find him. Upon reviewing the security feed, we realized that he was last seen entering the small play-structure, and never left-” Tobias arched an eyebrow. The police, and a pro hero, had been summoned for a child that was hiding in a play-structure? “I know,” Officer Fujioka said with a sigh, seeing Tobias’s expression, “But bear with me– a few employees, and even my fellow officer, have ventured into the structure in search of the child. But, after entering that tunnel-” the officer pointed towards a tunnel a few meters from the entrance, a lurid yellow, “-they haven’t been seen again. And they can’t seem to hear us.” Tobias’s face fell in alarm. “Radio and phone communication?”“Silent.” Tobias breathed a heavy sigh– it had to be something quirk-related. Quirks always added a level of unpredictability to cases. “Is the child– or any involved parties– quirked?”“None reported– though the tapes did catch an unusual sight just prior to the child’s disappearance-” The police officer tapped at their phone, unlocking it, before turning the screen towards Tobias. It was a wide-angle shot from above, pointed towards the entrance of the playground where the group now gathered. A peculiar individual who stood head-and-shoulders taller than most people dipping low towards the entrance of the play area before crawling inside. Their height alone was enough to scream “quirker”, but the fact that the tails of their coat seemed to writhe like tentacles was similarly incriminating. Tobias frowned, looking towards the entrance of the same play-area. He pinched his nose and sighed. If every other person who’d ventured in had disappeared, logically he would, too– but it was the only way to find the others. “Alright,” Tobias grunted, unbuttoning his suit coat, “Thank you, officer. I’ll do what I can.”Pim Finnegan

Sometimes, working for a public agency comes with confounding miscommunications. For example, Dispatch might elect to send one of their contracted employees (like Mr. Moore) to calls that “weren’t serious enough” to warrant actual police or hero response– only to neglect to remove the call from the board, and neglect to annotate that Mr. Moore had been sent. Such a scenario is what led Tobias Murakami to be dispatched to the call regarding the stolen microwave. It was his first official call as a member of the Ouros Agency, which came-through on his radio. “A… microwave?” the redhead intoned, rising from his desk-chair as he retrieved the keys to his work-vehicle. “Yes, Detective Murakami, a microwave. And some power cords. The RP was very distraught over their disappearance, and is requesting an investigation.” “Understood,” Tobias said simply, breathing a sigh, “Murakami, en route to the RP’s location. Ten minute ETA.”“10-4, en route.” With a groan, Tobias donned his duty belt and trudged through the door of his office, holstering his work-phone and his radio as he went. He followed the familiar serpentine halls towards the parking lot, selecting a non-descript black sedan from a line of similar vehicles. The engine coughed to life, and the black car reversed from its spot before pulling away. *** When Murakami arrived on-scene, he briefly alerted dispatch of his arrival before disembarking from the vehicle, straightening his tie and smoothing the front of his suit with the palms of his hands. An older gentleman stood at the front door, looking waspish. He thinned his eyes at the redhead as he approached. “What do you want?!” the old man snapped. “I’m Detective Murakami, I was sent from Ouros Agency regarding your call about the microwave?” the redheaded pro said simply, bowing at the waist. “Does the Ouros Agency give its heroes pocket watches?! Your buddy got here a good twenty minutes ago.” “I… beg your pardon, sir?”“You’re late, Detective Layabout! Your partner’s been inside doing all the work.” Partner…? Dispatch didn’t say anything about a partner… and he seriously doubted that they'd been there for twenty minutes. “Oh, pardon me,” Tobias said with another bow, “I was tied-up on another call, sir. Let me confer with my partner and we’ll be certain to get this taken care of.”Better to save face in front of the public with a little white lie than to flatly contradict them and look like an ass. Tobias toggled the bone-mic that was looped into one of his ears, giving a mild, “Dispatch, was another unit sent from a different agency?” A pregnant silence fell. This afforded Tobias the time to lean down and place plastic covers over his shoes before stepping into the abode. Once out of the homeowner's line of vision, he called-out to the apparent "partner" within. “Hello? Is there another detective on the premises?” Tobias called-out. What if it was a trap, and he had just blown his cover? What if it was a sting operation? A thrill of fear flooded Tobias’s chest, and the man put a steadying hand over his sternum. It was as if a spectral hand had clenched itself around his lungs, causing the corners of his vision to go momentarily dim. It’s fine. It had to be some sort of departmental oversight. You aren’t in danger, Murakami.

Tobias Murakami had become a new fixture around the Ouros Investigation and Hero Agency, though his appearances were rare. He would arrive early each morning, greeting anyone he passed with a bow and quiet hello, his eyes averted. Then he would retreat to his office, only emerging with a teapot in-hand, moving purposefully towards the office kitchenette.
To start, they had him doing paperwork– to “ease him back into investigative work”. Demoralizing, is what it was. He used to be a covert operative, taking down the biggest and baddest international villainous threats– and now he was pushing papers for this small-fry Japanese agency? There was little to be done, though– his brush with death had unnerved Tobias, and he’d been forced to retire from the squad he’d dedicated more than the last decade to.
Tobias Murakami arrived at the old mansion at about eight-thirty that morning– early enough to move at an unbothered pace, to set a teapot boiling and get his computer running, all prior to the actual nine o’ clock start. This also afforded him the luxury of not encountering many coworkers prior to his shift.
What Tobias did not anticipate was the young woman standing at-attention by his office door. A pale girl with hair as red as his, and a neat black dress that only served to further wash her complexion out. Had the dictionary a definition of “dead fish-eyes”, her gaze would have been the exemplary picture– for they were as devoid of emotion as devoid of blinking.
“Good… morning, miss,” Tobias said, the greeting creaking out of his mouth like the protest of an old door with rusted hinges.
As he was in the office, Tobias sported his usual suit– a nondescript black suit with red tie and white button-down shirt. But, with the tanness of his complexion, he looked… dignified. The gold rivulets that sprawled across his skin from head-to-toe gave the impression of a broken statue that had been mended with gold, then brought to life.
“Is there something that I can assist you with?”
He hoped not. But propriety demanded that he asked. It wouldn’t be polite to charge past the woman into his office, which she was inconveniently situated right next to.

Most would label Tobias as "straitlaced" when first encountering him, which would be quite accurate on a surface level. He is a man of few words, moving through life with a cordial grace. His seriousness belies a strict moral compass that scarcely wavers. Tobias will always try to do what is just and fair, simply because that's what is right. He's not without compassion, however. Despite his quiet, frigid exterior, Tobias is a bleeding heart for the unfortunate. He may not be the most demonstrative, but he will show his affections other ways, usually through acts of service. Overt shows of affection simply embarrass him, even flustering him, and he tends to avoid them. Tobias's greatest weakness is his own stubbornness. The positions he's filled throughout life have required a certain degree of tenacity, and his sense of duty won't allow him to quite until the task at-hand is resolved... often at his own expense. Moreover, his time with the special services has left him reasonably traumatized, given the nature of his work, so Tobias suffers bouts of anxiety and panic attacks. If Tobias fully succumbs to his quirk, there's a distinct shift in his personality, as well. No inkling of his usual self remains, only a savage, nonverbal beast hellbent on destruction. The only way of stopping it is to extinguish it. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]APPEARANCE » HEIGHT: 5'11" // 12' transformed

» FACE CLAIM SERIES: Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront) Tobias has a striking appearance, broad in the shoulder and chest but narrow in the hip. His body is stacked with functional muscle, with only the occasional pudge around the waist. In most facets of his life, he prefers suits, which creates quite the imposing air when combined with his build. A pair of silver-rimmed glasses sit smartly upon his proud nose. Everything about Tobias is well-kempt and precise. His nails are never dirty, his sideburns are always well-kempt and the skin-fade beneath his undercut is always tidy. He has tight movements and a cutting baritone voice. When he listens to a person, he gives them is full attention-- which can be quite unnerving, at times. Even when his quirk is inactive, there are "tells" that he has a quirk all over his body. Veins of gold serpentine all over his body, catching light and glimmering. There are imperfections in the veins, as it floods anywhere Tobias bears old scars. Most prominent is an enormous starburst on his chest. If anyone asks about them, though, he'll likely get embarrassed and avoid the question, finding it impertinent. If he's recently transformed, the vestiges of his quirk remain for three days before flaking away. [attr="class","body"] [attr="class","header2"]HISTORY Tobias Murakami had a tumultuous early life. The illegitimate child of esteemed opera singer Claudia Germanotta and her lover and local politician, Dr. Makoto Murakami. The two met at an after-party and, after one escapade, Claudia became pregnant. Fearing for his reputation, Makoto urged his lover to abort the pregnancy, but Claudia refused. She would bring her child into this world and raise him on her own, with or without Makoto's help. Claudia took a hiatus from performing during Tobias's first two years of life, bonding with her infant son. They lived modestly, surviving on her savings. She continued to rehearse until Tobias was old enough to travel. Then, the two of them traveled the world together as Claudia performed for crowds across the globe. Young Tobias was raised with a love of the theater, particularly opera– he loved the costumes that his mother always wore, loved listening to her sing. His life was not without its troubles– being young and beautiful, Claudia continued to be quite active in the party scene. Sometimes Tobias was tended to by babysitters, but sometimes young Claudia forgot, and Tobias was left to his own devices. It was a blissful but short-lived lifestyle. Claudia fell gravely ill while on-tour. As her health took a dire turn, she contacted Makoto, fearing for her son's well-being. Tobias never knew what his mother had said to his father in their numerous conversations– but, in her final days, she revealed to Tobias that he'd be staying with his estranged father until she got better. That was the last that Tobias saw of her. He was eight years old at the time. The transition into his new life was a difficult one. Makoto Murakami and his wife had two children of their own, both Tobias's senior. They all collectively seemed to deign the boy's presence there. Tobias, beset by grief, proved a difficult child, too. Denial gave way to sorrow and fury, but he had no one to turn to for help navigating those emotions. His mother was all he had ever had, and now he had no one. Additionally, as he was catapulted into the public school system, his complete unfamiliarity with Japanese alienated him from his peers. He was big for his age, filled with confusing emotions, and he had strange hair and pale eyes. In this time of great stress, his quirk emerged. One day, when another classmate pushed the boy too far, Tobias lashed-out against them. Golden magma burbled from his skin, burning him and the grass around him. As his fury mounted, the eruption accelerated, fully engulfing the child. Tobias blacked-out, and didn't come-to until he was extinguished by the fire department. The playground had been decimated. And Tobias– now locked in a fiery shell– was the clear culprit. He was expelled, sent to a school for troubled children–for, despite Tobias’s protests, the school administrators and his parents had believed his destruction to have been voluntary. It was at this school where Tobias began to flourish. In the throes of the Quirk Rights Movement, and with many parents of the era being products of the Vigilante era and earlier, many of the children there were simply kids with quirks that their parents didn’t know how to manage. Perhaps it could have been considered a predecessor to a “hero” school, although it did still serve unquirked children. It also focused predominantly on managing one’s powers and psychiatric health. Here, Tobias learned Japanese, received counseling for his grief and anger, and began to understand his quirk. He learned that his quirk was spurred by spikes of emotion, and could usually reduce the damage done by calming himself down. He still struggled to fit-in due to his appearance and stature, but he found his own niche of classmates to run around with. The Murakami's did the bare minimum for Tobias, only permitting him to visit during holidays, but otherwise pretending the boy did not exist– frankly, Tobias dreaded the holidays as much as they did, and found every excuse to avoid visiting them. The rest of his adolescence passed with relative normalcy– from elementary school to junior high, then from junior high to high school. His progress in learning to control his quirk in elementary school and junior high school allowed him to be unenrolled from the troubled school– but, not wanting anything to do with Makoto’s illegitimate son, Tobias was sent directly to the JGSDF High Technical School– a high school that acted as a precursor to joining the Japanese military. Tobias excelled there. He was a bright boy with a powerful quirk who thrived in the structure that military school provided him. Immediately after graduation, Tobias joined a covert governmental unit that specialized in investigations of high-level villainous threats– and subsequently covertly neutralized them by any means necessary, whether by arrest or execution. While the young man enjoyed the investigative work–finding small bits of information here-and-there in order to intuit answers– the executions never sat right with him. Though Tobias never did the killing himself, his quirk often sparked the flames that burned away the evidence and made the villain’s disappearance look like an accident. The guilt of being even loosely involved would often turn his stomach. Six months ago, Tobias was sent on a mission that would change the course of his life forever. They were targeting the Kanzaki-kai, a gang in Japan that focused primarily on smuggling illicit items and dealing them to elite’s internationally. For a long time, Tobias’s unit had been tracking Kanzaki-kai, and they had gained information that the group would be striking a new deal with another gang in a week’s time, and that one of the boss’s sons (the third-in-command) would be present for the exchange. The plan was made and the unit was dispatched the night before the sting operation. The designated time came and went without a single Kanzaki-kai member making an appearance. Unrest rippled through the outfit. Had they been given bad information? Had the Kanzaki-kai changed locations at the last minute, or called the deal off? It was far worse than that– whoever had given them the information was double-dealing, and the Kanzaki-kai swooped in with hundreds of their loyal yakuza goons, raining an unforeseen attack on the officers present. A chaotic battle ensued. Somewhere in the midst of it all, Hikaru Kanzaki– the youngest son of the gang’s boss– struck Tobias with a close-range, quirk-generated explosion aimed directly at Tobias’s chest. Any normal person would have died– and Tobias almost did. The force of the blast threw him from his feet, and blood began to seep from his chest-wound. The world around him swam and his vision began to fade. Well… it was a short life, but at least he had done some good, Tobias thought… As the young man slipped into unconsciousness, his quirk activated in a last-ditch effort to save him, molten gold coating the wounds and sealing them. Tobias was retrieved by someone else from his cohort, and awoke weeks later in a hospital room. The incident had rendered all of the blood in his circulatory system liquid-gold, giving his body the signature veins that weaved their way all over his body. At the site of the attack, a starburst of gold consumes most of his chest. After months of rehabilitation and many difficult conversations, Tobias was medically retired from the unit. He still maintains his role as an investigator, but has been shuffled into a public pro-hero position. Due to his continued rehabilitation, he has yet to be cleared for work again. QUIRK RANK: S
QUIRK TYPE: Transformation
QUIRK DESCRIPTION: Tobias possesses a two-step reactive adaptation-- which is a fancy way of saying that, when his body is subjected to certain external stimuli, it transforms in order to protect his well-being. Specifically, any sort of physical trauma (injury or threat of injury, peak in cortisol or adrenaline, and the likes) will cause the gold in his veins to become molten. The molten gold fully engulfs his body, burning as it contacts the air and setting any flammable items in the vicinity ablaze. As the molten gold cools, it becomes black and obsidian-like with veins of gold weaving through it. He effectively becomes a living, jet-black statue. This form can still move, much like a living person, but it feels like metal and stone to the touch. By becoming a living statue, Tobias protects himself from potential injury, since stone and metal cannot bleed.
The rate of transformation is greatly impacted by the immediacy of the threat, and whether or not Tobias can get things back under control before becoming fully-consumed. If a threat (perceived or real) is enduring, or if he's continually angry or frightened, the transformation can take only a post before fully consuming him. If Tobias can calm himself down, however, he can halt a transformation before it fully engulfs him, only armoring certain regions of his body. In the most severe situations-- for example, if Tobias is desperate or believes that his end is inevitable, his form changes into something more bestial, and it will rampage until extinguished or satisfied.
QUIRK DRAWBACKS: Firstly, Tobias's power only activates in reaction to an external stimulus-- injury or threat thereof, a startle reflex, or anything else that will cause a person's adrenaline or cortisol to spike. It's not something that he can call-upon at-will. The transformation persists until Tobias calms down, and then it begins to solidify. Once fully solidified, the statue-mode lasts ten days. Since his transformation is rather incendiary, it tends to burn through any clothes he may have been wearing before, which presents its own situational challenges. It's fine if you're a genderless effigy-- but if only your arms are stony and the rest of you is a pink, squishy human it's just immodest.
If Tobias remains transformed for too long, however, his form becomes more bestial, as do his sensibilities, and he’ll rampage until he’s either fully extinguished, or until his target no longer poses a threat.
His quirk follows a very strict eruption -> molten gold -> cooling -> obsidian sequence. Once he’s solidified, he cannot erupt again until the old shell is shed. It takes approximately three days for a normal shell to shed, during which time his eyes, veins, and mouth glow from within. If he rampages, the bestial form remains for seven days. Tobias is typically quite weak after shedding his obsidian shell, because he cannot eat or drink during that time.
Toby is weak against cold- and water-based attacks. They can force him out of the eruption and molten stages, and immediately into the cooling stage, rendering him somewhat prone. Even untransformed, he's a force to be reckoned with-- but transformed, he's hitting with either molten-gold or obsidian, so... it's best to not be on the receiving end of a punch.
