Unfinished business is such a nebulous term. When you utter the phrase into a sweaty, lawyer’s ear as they scramble across the ground of an empty alleyway, they think back to all the wrongs they’ve committed. The criminal defense attorney was notorious for getting the wrong people off their charges. Had it been a one-time affair then Antoine would have thought him doing his job. Everyone deserves a second chance. And this man was granted plenty throughout his life. Every case was another chance to break his pattern. Instead, he reinforced it with every corrupt bone in his body. Antoine understood what the law was for. And in kind, he carved out his identity in the niches the law could not reach. By this point, he had given up on Español as his default language. People were more inclined to speak English. Beyond that, he’d be marking himself as a target when he wasn’t a husk of a being. When his body was flesh and bone and not an amalgamation of forces — his best impression of a human being. “Hinata. Mei. Asahi. Yuki.” Antoine walked forward. “Do you remember them?” “Yes!” The lawyer screamed. English. “I saved them! You have the wrong person!” “Do you remember what they did?” He gulped. “Tonight,” Antoine aimed his pool stick at the man’s head as he whimpered. The lawyer’s head was the billiard ball. “You pay for your sins.”

“I’m back for more!” The door slams open. Brand new, too. Right off the hinges. A man with a long face, overbite, and horse ears gallops into the restaurant. Bernie’s Burgers recently had a run-in with him only to be deterred by security and a local model. “Lucky me, huh? Those two pain-in-the-asses are coincidentally missing today.” Horseface had been scouting this place plotting for revenge. Dealing with a 2v1 was above his pay grade. Especially since he was lookin’ to score a free meal and not much else. He had enough bite to get the job done if it’s a bunch of these shmucks, but with someone throwing doors around and the other conjuring flames from their hands, it wasn’t worth the trouble. He sits down at a table, kicking his feet up. An elderly couple is eating their authentic, American cuisine. Boots on the burgers and he gives ‘em both the stink eye. In shock, they stare. “Well? Skidaddle.” They gather their things and head out the now-broken door. “It’s a good day to be bad.”

“How about English?” Antoine swapped tongues. “Any better?” “Hehe…” Yamamoto shrugged. “Moshi moshi…?” “You monolingual fu—” He slipped back into Español. A light flickered. And the guest would meet a floating billiard ball with a pool stick inches behind it. Her voice was daggers, but the language barrier proved insurmountable. Who the hell is this?“A corpse?!” Yamamoto shrieked. “Why does he want to kill me?” With Antoine’s attention focused on the intruder, Yamamoto shuffled further away into the corner of the room. Antoine repositioned as he tossed another pool ball into the air. His pool stick was now aimed at both targets. He couldn’t shoot simultaneously, but they didn’t need to know that. “Don’t move.” If he could understand the hostility in her voice then Yamamoto should hear the venom in his. Maybe he’d have better luck with this one. The suit may not have spoken English, but the intruder might. “I don’t speak Japanese.” He offered the olive branch. “Are you protecting him?” If all else failed, he’d presume her his bodyguard and deal with her the way he dealt with the lawyer and the boss. Yamamoto would pay for his transgressions. His grip tightened.

She was reckless. The vehicle was moments away from breaking down. Even on an open, empty road, crashing was a matter of time. The angel’s tail found its way to the steering wheel, panic setting in the driver’s eyes. If she were as tough as she said, then Antoine would bring her along for the ride. “We’re going to cut him off.” Antoine extended his arm to intercept her jump and guide her over should something go wrong. If not, then he’d guarantee a safe landing with his quirk. No one complains about stable footing when hitting 90 miles per hour on the highway. The culprit charged the exit. The smell of burnt rubber overtook the smoke and flames from the wreckage. The lane split and descended into local traffic. There were a few ways to cut through, most of which were through people. “Hold on tight.” She didn’t have to. She could stay on the roof of this car and let Antoine do what he did best — save the day. But if she did, she’d watch him step onto empty air. Platform after platform would form under their feet. Then, when they reached the ramp, they’d cut across. People might think them suicidal if not for the slide he created. It took too much energy; his chain flashed red. He ignored it. The air from his footing rippled into a curved platform beneath them. Only the most observant would notice the change in its composition at this time of night. It was stable enough to support their weight yet smooth enough to slide like ice. “It’s all on you,” Maintaining the friction exhausted him. The scale of use was both large and complicated. By creating the opportunity, he’d rely on her halo to knock out the driver. If she couldn’t manage, then… He should have known better.

They speak English. Antoine lifted another billiard ball, the yellow, striped nine. If his assumptions were correct, the assassin’s abilities were limited to the material that orbited his hands. Now, was the material generated or manipulated? And to what extent could they control it? Range, finesse, etc. As Antoine released the ball into the air, it stood completely still. There was so much friction on its surface the ball was immovable by the forces of gravity. By targeting the ball instead of the air around it, he could manipulate it at a distance. The plan was to circumvent the defense options used by the assassin. If necessary, Antoine will ricochet the ball off the air. It will rebound in such a way, multiple times if need be, to target the assassin’s head. Even if the attempt fails, it’ll give him information. The inverse is also true. In exchange, Antoine was giving up information. The risk was worth it. He slammed the pool stick against the ball with such precision the recently immobile object shot at speeds physically impossible. Only the slightest amount of friction was applied to its side to keep it on course. “In Hell.” He spat. He never wanted this bastard’s name.

“It’s an alien!” Red jumped as he caught a glimpse of its features. He turned desperately to Antoine as it became a silhouette. “They’ve finally invaded. They’ve come for my genius!” “It’s an owl,” Antoine said. “The mask. It’s an owl.” One by one the feeds disappeared. The words ‘no connection’ popped up on each screen as they switched through the remaining cameras. Red’s shaking fingers stopped switching through them as panic set in. He was a deer in headlights. Antoine took over, remembering the outside of the warehouse and calculating which camera would be targeted last. “Stay here,” Antoine ran off to his briefcase, grabbing it before sneaking out of the warehouse. “I won’t let him inside.” It was a matter of timing. Antoine didn’t know how he was dealing with the cameras. By running out into the open, he’d be making himself a target to a killer he knew nothing of. Instead, he’d wait for his opportunity. And without Red or cameras to look at him, he didn’t have to compromise his alter ego. There. Some kind of needle flew threw the air, targeting the camera. With his pool stick in hand, he launched a billiard ball to intercept it. Tracing the angle of the attack, he saw the assassin in all his glory. And if the assassin were to do the same, he’d look into the eyes of a demon — a skull mask with red markings. But the sound of the camera being destroyed would draw his eyes away from the enemy and back to the roof. Right through the six-ball, huh?“Before I kill you,” Antoine said in English. “What’s your name?”

Japan’s a mess. He had only been here a week and had seen the cracks in the system. If it wasn’t for the constant reminder no one spoke Español, then he might have thought this was another island in the Caribbean. Strike that. With the infrastructure in place, it resembled the United States. Here’s to hoping the heroes aren’t as corrupt. “And what can I say? I’m a giver.” Bernard was giving another self-aggrandizing speech. He was a well-spring of opportunity, even in the midst of people’s failures. Somehow, despite Red’s passing, Antoine was given another chance. Beyond that, Bernard cared not for his vigilante streak and promised to keep it under wraps. Under one condition. Don’t kill anyone he says not to. Small price to pay for a place to sleep. And once Antoine finds Emile and leaves the country, it’s a promise he won’t have to keep. A motorcycle speeds by them. Antoine sees the cars about to pass and pulls on his chain before hesitating. Bernard interrupts before he can speak. “Go, go.” His forked, silver tongue licks his lips. “I want to see The Demon.” Antoine jumps out of the limousine as nothing more than a black silhouette, a being comprised entirely of force giving the impression of a man. Atop his face is a skull littered with red markings. In his hands is a brief case in hand he lands on the side of the car, ignoring the laws of physics. He crawls to the roof and opens the briefcase. He pulls out a pool stick and aims it at the floating eight-ball in front of him. Then, she arrives. “You’re in the w—” A gunshot. A windshield shatters. He launches the eight-ball, breaking the man’s hand as he drops the gun onto the road. While cars begin to swerve and crash, his steed persists. He looks to the woman beside him. “Are you hurt?”

“How about English?” Antoine tried again. Red responded with a blank stare before pulling out his phone. He walked off to the side of the warehouse and sat on the most comfortable box available. Draped across it was a wool blanket. Nestling into his seat, he continued to ignore Antoine. “Guess not.” Antoine frowned. He leaned against the wall as he surveyed the area. He took note of the exits before glancing down at the briefcase he placed on the ground. “Should’ve brought some cards instead.” Boredom. There was nothing to do. If anything, it was a good sign. But good times never last. Do they? “Someone’s here.” Red piped up. He scrolled through his phone, rapidly changing through screens. Once Antoine approached, he saw there were cameras. “You speak English?!” Antoine said. “They’re coming for me.” “You. Speak. English.” “Y-yes…” Red nervously repositioned himself, looking to obstruct the assassin’s line of sight with Antoine’s body. “Why didn’t you say anything earlier?” “I didn’t want to talk to you.” “Why not?!” “I was scared.” Oh. “It’s fine.” Antoine settled down. “We’ll be fine. I’ll protect you, okay?” “O-okay…” “Now, where is he?”

Nightfall. No one should be working at this hour. The janitorial staff have gone home, leaving a cleanliness that evades the morning. The potent scent of castile soap and window cleaner could get you high. But this doesn’t deter the men congregating in an office two corridors past the elevator. In the dark, empty hall the illuminated office was a beacon. A monster lurks in the shadows, its footsteps burdened with the weight of justice. “Cheers.” Glasses clanked. Three men sit around a table, each holding a bottle of sake. “To your freedom.” “To the best lawyer I could find.” “To my freedom!” The man to his left eyes him. “And, er, a kind, thoughtful boss…” “Better.” He laughs. The lawyer laughs. The employee tepidly joins. “Although, I’d prefer wise.” The lights go out. Their heads whip to the switch. An eight-ball is lodged within the wall, penetrating from the outside. Out the door comes a shadow. As its hand reaches the frame, they can see it’s anything but human. Its fingers are ethereal — an impression of a person. They come to see its face, a skull with red markings, as it locks on to the twitchiest person in the room. “I-is this a surprise?” He desperately looks at the lawyer and then his boss. He knew he had gotten off too easy. “You know I don’t like horror…” “Not a surprise.” The lawyer moved to stand before being forcefully sat again. “I just wanted to get you a chair, friend. More the merrier.” “More the merrier!” The boss chimes to no avail. The figure puts his other hand on the boss’s shoulder before slamming them onto the table. They both fall unconscious as the target scrambles to his feet. He runs as far as he can into the room, the exit blocked by Ghouligan. “What do you want?” He begs. “I’ll give you all my money. All their money!” “Tanjiro Yamamoto,” Ghouligan stepped away from the table and toward the entrance. “You are responsible for the deaths of countless innocents. You used your damned machines to sell drugs and weapons to any gang leader offering dinero. Yet you dare plea innocent in court?” He tosses the eight-ball up and down. “There is justice beyond the courts.” “Eh?” The man was equal parts confused and terrified. “Right. Japanese.” Ghouligan muttered. “I’m sure in your doki doki you know why I’m here.”

Antoine has many talents, most importantly punching and getting punched. Those talents landed him a job at Bernie’s Burgers as a security guard. The boss, Bernard, was doing everything to help Antoine acclimate to Japan. Including going through the proper channels to get a work visa. Paperwork this, petition approval that — boring! It was headache after headache despite his protests. He had no intention of staying in Japan. He was here to find his brother and tell him of their late father. Afterward, he’d leave the country, no questions asked. Everything up to that point was a matter of convenience. A job was a meal and a paycheck. But resisting proved a hassle. And Bernard was quick to distract Antonine with another opportunity. The boss saw talents in him that were beyond the average security guard. With Bernie’s Burgers acting as a front for his real business, Bernard sought to test how valuable an asset Antoine was. “Don’t be nervous.” Thanks to the benefit of his literal, silver tongue, he spoke to Antoine in Español. “You’ll do great.” “I’m not nervous,” While Antoine was grateful to speak his native language, he still found the sentiment off-putting. “I’m—” “You’ve gotta make sure our friend here stays nice and safe.” Bernard patted his colleague on the back, wrapping his arm around their shoulders. “They’ve got a big ol’ target on ‘em. I’m not keen on losing my best friend. You know we started our businesses on the same day?” “Bernard.” The man shook Bernard’s arm off. “Too touchy, no touchy.” “Fine, Red.” Bernard dusted off his suit. “I’ll leave you in Ant’s safe, strong arms.” Bernard left. Antoine looked at their base. It was an abandoned warehouse. It looked unlived in and unused. If that were the case, then strangers were unlikely to find them. Similarly, neither would police. Which would be annoying if they needed their help. “If someone’s after you, wouldn’t that make us sitting ducks?” Antoine paused. “Right. Japanese.”

A stranger offered help to the native before turning to him. Their name was Auden and while they didn’t speak Español they did speak English. It was better than nothing. With a somewhat thick accent that denoted his Carribean heritage, he offered his thanks. “Antoine.” Something caught his eye. “ Move.” A loud slam brought the restaurant to a halt as the door flew off its hinges. Antoine grabbed Auden and tossed them out of the way as the door slammed to the side of his head. It wasn’t gonna kill him, but the bloodied temple would hamper his eyesight. He knew this job would be a headache but he didn’t think of it literally. And now it was hard to think at all. The aggressor was barely human. Humanoid at best. With a long face and an overbite, only a mother could love. Their spite-driven discontent transcended language. Antoine didn’t need to understand them. He lifted the door and slammed it back into them, blindsiding them. “Don’t hit yourself on the way out.” Antoine chimed in. English. At least someone could appreciate the joke. “You bloody bastard.” They spoke English, too. Like a proper Brit. “I will tear your throat out and then I will serve it like a beef patty.” “I’m starting to question whether I know English now.” With everyone watching, he couldn’t go all out. “Why don’t we take this outside?” “You know, love,” The horse-faced vermin scratched the back of his ears and a long mane erupted from his neck. The over-bite turned into comically large chompers that would dramatically tear you to shreds if you let them. “I’d rather not.”

themes
1) Having *a system* is good. - That does not mean the current system, or any of the current systems are perfect, or even 'good enough.' - Flaws in the system lead to problematic people running free for one reason or another.
2) Killing is necessary. - If the system cannot rectify the problem, then it falls onto people like Ghouligan to deal with it. - He must also deal with the consequences of the system if he is captured. It's the nature of the struggle but one he accepts. 3) Not everyone is a killer. - Once you cross the line you become one of two people, one who can do it again or one who can't. - If you can, you live with the burden and do what must be done to cull outliers of the system. - If you cannot, there are other ways you can contribute. - It is up to the killers to protect the Not-Killers from bloodying their hands.
4) Killers cannot create - The thing that allows them to kill is what prevents them from creating a worthwhile system. - The reason you protect the non-killers is to protect their vision of their future, lest they be dragged down by the weight of their sins #edge

It’s tough to land a gig when you don’t know a lick of Japanese. After a few arigatos and a daijoubus falling on deaf ears, Antoine had given up on finding work. If it weren’t for his fellow gaijin — the jury’s not out on whether or not the word is a slur — then he would have had to dig in the dumpsters. Again. New country, same problems. Your next meal is never guaranteed. Whether it was out of pity or a false sense of comradery, a loud-mouthed American offered him a job. More importantly, the American spoke to Antoine in Español. The businessman knew how to sway the hearts of people around him. Being a polyglot didn’t hurt, either. The job was simple and played to Antoine’s strengths. Stand guard. The man brings him to a small location, a burger joint sporting enough grease to drown out the local competition. There was an empty building across the street. The restaurant couldn’t keep up with Bernie’s Burgers. Output, quality, and theme blew them out of the water. The WcDonald’s down the road remained an immovable monolith. Antoine dons the uniform, holsters his walky-talky, and stands by the door as he scans the room. The burgers look good. Once they discuss pay, he might give the place a shot. He’s not here for Japanese cuisine, after all. “Excuse me,” A customer bows. “Where’s the bathroom?” Antoine nods. “Um,” They repeat themselves but slower, more deliberate. “ Where is the BATHroom?” Antoine nods. What the hell are they saying?
