The criminals lay on the ground, licking their wounds. For now, they’d concoct a plan. At least, that’s what they’d tell themselves as they wrestled with the fear in their hearts — death or prison. There was a fork in the road and little leeway to create their own path. Life wasn’t a series of words crafted by a higher being. They weren’t characters in a novel. And if they were, they wouldn’t have been the focus. They were infinitesimally small. The longer they stared at the umbral husk, the smaller they felt. “You can go.” Ghouligan shooed off the woman. There was important business to attend to. If this man was a hero, then Ghouligan might have to fight out of here, too, “You’re safe now.” It was best if she wasn’t caught in the middle of it. “Ghouligan.” Antoine introduced himself. A story had been recently published about his murders at a bank. Even for those who tacitly approved of vigilante work, turning a blind eye when they saw someone save another without a license, most drew a line at murder. He wouldn’t be surprised if they were immediately hostile. “What’s your name, hero?”

One by one, they fell. Without an ounce of hesitation nor a pound of uncertainty, Ghouligan slaughtered the criminals. They would have been spared in another universe — they were hardly worthwhile in their own right. Aside from their resolve, they were your average, low-level crooks. They were physically unimposing and sloppy in their attacks. The only problem they offered was the abundance of openings they had left Antoine. Their capsized skulls slammed into the ground, lifeless. And before Ghouligan could leave the alley and run into the building, a shadowy figure descended from the sky. The way they held their blade spoke volumes… “I’m just heading home.” Antoine pointed to Retsu’s house. A house that clearly wasn’t his. A house that was under attack. “It’s that way.” He was almost patronizing. But de-escalating the situation was what was most important. Gadget was capable and he had faith she’d hold her on, but who’s to say the house didn’t explode? Who’s to say Ghouligan hadn’t condemned her to an early grave? There was already blood on his hands, but usually, it was worth it. “I’ll be going?”

July 15th. 1:50 PM. There’s no one around. No, that’s not it. There aren’t places around either. Technically, yes, there is a river to the East. And if you head North for long enough, you’ll run into a cave littered with creatures you’d rather avoid. And you must have come from ‘somewhere’ which makes ‘here’ distinctly a place. But it’s not a place in the way a coffee shop is a place. There aren’t idle ears and eyes watching as people flow in and out of the building. There isn’t a cashier taking orders as their soul slowly slips away into the aether. There isn’t a private booth for two people to whisper secrets to one another — a fitting location for what’s to come. It’s not one of those places. It’s a place left untouched by humans. It’s a place where beasts can live in peace, only bothered by other kinds of monsters. It’s a place where the paths have ended, where there is only brush and bush and dirt. It’s a place where technology is absent. And if you were to bring a phone with you, you’d have a one in ten chance of your call getting through. It’s the place where he’d meet Gadget. Dion was invited, too, but he’s busy at the moment. He’ll be busy for a while. Something came up and it was something he’d do alone. But his will lives on. This was his idea after all. But for now, Ghouligan waits. And for once he’s not transformed. The mask is still on. He’s still carrying the briefcase with his arsenal, should things go wrong. There’s a liquid slug contained in a vial beneath his baggy jacket, but he’s not transformed. It’d be the first time someone in Japan would see him like this. He sits against the tree. Waiting.

Miss G was quick with the banter and even quicker with the interrogation. Moments after her arrival, their meeting was put to a halt. Instead, she inquired about the news story circulating. Ghouligan had been caught on camera — it was blurry, but enough to spread his image online. Adding the victims’ testimony served to amplify its validity. And even if there was no evidence to leverage, even if the testimonies were all false, and even if Miss G wasn’t an ally, he would have spoken the truth. Not his truth, but the truth. Regardless of justification, the fact of the matter was that Ghouligan did kill those criminals. What he found particularly odd was Miss G’s interest. After their first encounter, she should know about his methodology. Maybe this didn’t ‘make the cut,’ but more people would have died had he fought to pacify. “It’s true,” Ghouligan said. “I killed them.” Ghouligan didn’t appear human. He didn’t have skin, and he didn’t have a face, but underneath it all? He was. Grinta may not have known that. Make no mistake, she knows he’s human. But she would not know if his form, permanent or otherwise, altered his psyche, too. And it didn’t. Which made his uncaring, matter-of-fact tone as he spoke about their deaths all the more revealing.

“Yeah, I don’t get it personally.” Considering his workplace, Antoine ran into natives more often than not. They were interested in trying authentic, American cuisine. Whatever that means. Considering the place had been a melting pot for so long, it’s hard to tell what is “American” and what is a deviation from some other culture’s dish. Even so, there were a few foreigners that came in, too. And for whatever reason, there was a resounding sentiment in American culture, from what little he’s experienced, that Japan was the place to be. Usually from people who watched cartoons, but… “It’s walkable, I guess. But I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have to be. It wouldn’t be my first choice of residence.” There were a few muffled grunts and groans as the process continued. It felt like a knife being pulled out very, very slowly. Whether he liked to admit it or not, speaking to Megumi was helping. But she always had to press the damn issue. Friends. Like what does that even entail? “Right about what?”

The bag never made it to Ghouligan. It flew through the air, slowing until it gradually halted. Much like the will-o-wisps, it floated through unknown machinations of the world — the silhouette of a man never laid his hands on it. It wasn’t a lack of trust. Ghouligan saw the action for what it was: compliance. It wasn’t a distraction, nor were there bombs laced within the seams of the fabric. If there were any ill-intent, then he couldn’t make sense of it. When juxtaposed with desperation — three men outing themselves as criminals — Ghouligan knew who to target. But there was still the matter of punishment. These three sought safety. They would likely return to their old ways if he let them be. Ghouligan operated outside the system but acknowledged its efficacy. There were many ways it could be improved, all of which were beyond him, but it was vital for society to function. His role, here, was not to be the arbiter of all good and evil within the country. He was here to clean up the messes the system couldn’t. The cue stick slams against the pool balls. They ricochet off the alley walls and slam into each of their shins, cracking them. They all collapse onto the ground, even if it’s for a moment. Their gait will be hindered by their newfound limp. And while it’d eventually heal, it’d make outrunning any pursuers an impossibility. “You aren’t leaving yet.” He turned to the old woman and his ally. “Do both of you have everything?”

Japan’s greatest accomplishment is the walkability of its cities. With paved pathways and alleyways like veins, getting where you need to go on foot alone is easy. But with the proliferation of quirks, unregulated power at people’s fingertips — despite how desperately the government tried to limit it — still prompted the most opportunistic bottomfeeders to harass the most vulnerable parts of society. There’s a commotion in the alleyway. There’s always a commotion in the alleyway. A man’s voice pleads for help. A big, bad wolf looks to feast on Little Old Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs, a gluttonous meal befitting a monster. Apparently, the biscuit wasn’t enough. Stepping into the fray is something less than human. They have everything you might expect of a man: two arms, two legs, and a head, but they’re different. There isn’t skin on their body, only an undulating black umbra, expanding and retracting to the rhythm of an unsung heartbeat. Black wisps emanate from their body. And behind their mask, you can see they don’t have eyes, only an imprint of where they should be. There’s a metal pipe on the ground, a misplaced dumpster, and a man’s blade at another’s neck. These men were anything but harmless, yet they were still disposed of. A few thoughts come across Ghouligan’s as he drops three pool balls levitate before him. Lifting his cue stick, he prepares himself for the confrontation. “I can’t be sure who is and who isn’t a threat,” For all Ghouligan knew, the elderly woman could have been responsible for the altercation. He’s not one to judge on appearances — not when it’s a matter of life and death. “But this is everyone’s chance to put a life of crime behind them.” Half the time, people run. Even if they return to their old ways, criminals deserve a second chance. The other half chose to die where they stood. What’s the saying? You can lead a sinner to Church, but you can’t make them pray. “Let’s start by returning everything to their rightful owner.”

Gadget seemed the emotional sort. If this were the comfort she needed to stay composed throughout the firefight, then Antoine would comply. It was easy to hide his discomfort. Behind his mask was only an imprint of a face. There were no eyes to betray him as his mind briefly wandered to the last time he let himself get close to someone. It’s nightfall. There’s a campfire on the beach. Antoine can feel his smile as he glances at her silhouette, laughing at how burnt her marshmallows were. That’s so not edible. A hug and a boop later, the pair were interrupted. Reinforcements arrived. They sprawled from every nook and cranny like the roaches they were. And Antoine remembers who he is; he remembers where he is. It’s Japan. The sound of gunfire rings like church bells. The battle escalates. And whatever plans they had before were tossed to the wayside — heroism or not, these four needed to be dealt with. The chaos was an opening in itself, but there was still value in gathering intel from the heroes and the police. Gadget needed to press forward, even if it was the more dangerous path. “It’s time,” Antoine said. He pulled out three pool balls. The cue ball, the seven, and the four. He glances toward the drone before looking back at the reptile. “I’ll take care of them.” As the three spheres floated in the air, coated in the same black whisps comprising Ghouligan’s body, he’d give them the chance they deserved. With his cue stick readied it’d only take a moment to slam these into their ill-formed skulls. “If you want to live, then you’ll tell me everything you know,” Antoine said. “Then walk away.”

It’s noon. The Sun above is covered by a blanket of clouds as the breeze rustles the forest branches. It’s accompanied by a howl that the unfamiliar would attribute to a beast — a mighty wolf on the prowl for its next meal. The coinciding thuds, reminiscent of heavy footsteps, add to the illusion. But it’s nothing more than the trick of an oncoming storm. But there is a beast in the woods. A few brave souls returned from their expedition with countless stories of an imperceivable creature. It’s more accurate to say they all saw it but it was different for each of them. One saw a large humanoid covered in fur with grotesque appendages and hands and feet ill-fitting of their body. Another saw a serpent with eight heads and eight tails wrapping itself around a tree. The third saw a snow-white stallion with a long, spiraled horn grazing by the meadow. The rumors spread until they eventually found Antoine. He perused the woods as best he could before getting lost — not that he’d admit he was lost. He was on the hunt. This creature was a shapechanger or altered people’s perception. Either way, they were dangerous. Someone needed to get to the root of the matter… And it’s not like the heroes bought into the ordeal. Not yet, anyway.

Glass shatters. While patrolling the streets, Antoine catches wind of an altercation. There’s a grocery store, a thief wielding a knife, and a mysterious figure barely making an appearance before they run off. He wasn’t too far from the incident, but it was over by the time word spread. Police had already arrived and showing up wouldn’t help him find what he was looking for — an ally. The behavior was obvious. They were a vigilante. And if they had broken glass near the register to ‘save the day’ then they must have been facing… This way. Antoine turned. His goal wasn’t to retrace their footsteps. He needed to intercept them. He needed to see if they were worthwhile — someone worth adding to the Undertow. While people were reserved about adding others, as was he, it never hurt to see potential prospects. Numbers were scarce enough as is. On the roof he sees movement. A familiar face. Er, a lack thereof. The same hair-textured vigilante that had helped him against that gelatinous cube. An interview couldn’t hurt.A few blocks down, he’s in her way. Demon mask, husk of shadows, in all of his edgy glory. “Have a minute?”

A lot can happen in a day. Even more in three. When Antoine agreed to this meeting, he didn’t only think it’d be the next time he saw ‘G’ but that it’d be the last. He arrived in Japan in search of his brother but found himself entangled in the lives of strangers. Most notably Bernard and all the shenanigans that entailed. With his resources and newfound inspiration — some of which were prompted by this upcoming meeting and recent coordination amongst criminals — he planted the seeds of an underground network. Whether or not it’d flourish would depend on factors beyond his control. But he’d do his best to tend the soil. The project wasn’t to satiate his ego. It was the opposite; an admission that he needed help. Japan was too large and too corrupt a country. They still had ground to tread, but there were new avenues to explore. ‘G’ was paranoid. Justifiably so. And while he’d still keep them at an arm’s length, their perspective on the meeting was something he looked forward to. Now it was a matter of them showing up.

Antoine trusted Megumi as much as anyone could trust Megumi. They had only met once before but she proved her skill to him. And to think, he only had to deal with a sparse ‘I told you so’ from Bernard. Still, he had reservations about her bedside manner. Less about the way she spoke to him, he was pretty adaptable to any and all kinds of personalities, even the ones he disliked, and more about how rough she was. At first, he had written it off due to the severity of his initial injuries. Considering the process, and how quickly he’d recover, the upfront cost was a non-issue… even if he did pass out. But with how abruptly he locked onto the table, and how methodical she felt in her actions, he felt like a piece of meat at the butcher. With the proposed solution to dislodging the bullet, he had it under good authority it was going to hurt more than getting shot. To cope with the pain, he spoke. “Bernard warned me never to get too good at Japanese. Apparently, they dislike it when foreigners speak as well as they do. If they like us, it’s because we are different. And once we speak as well as they do, then they start to call us ‘fake Japanese’ — as a passive-aggressive insult.” He’d shrug if he could. “I think he’s trying to make me feel better about how slow I’m learning.”
