‘‘Nice?’’ She frowned, she didn’t adopt a cat to come across as a nice person. ‘‘She just needed a home.’’ She wasn’t even really sure why she did it. Maybe it was when she held the cat in her own arms and felt it purring and cuddling up to her despite the fact that she had transformed into a monster at the time. ‘‘That’s good. I was thinking of naming her Bastet.’’ The joke about Yoko being cat-like flew completely over her head. If anything she was just relieved to hear Nat wasn’t allergic, since her adopting Bastet had kind of been a big impulse decision. ‘‘Gyoza? Isn’t that a lot of work?’’ She stretched her arms again, yup, still tired. She had never made gyoza herself, but anyone who had eaten it before would know that dumplings probably weren't a dish for beginners. Then again, Nat seemed to like a challenge. ‘‘Not really, I was gonna order us takeout or something, I don’t want to cook today.’’ Her body was still sore from training. She had gone her entire life without using her quirk as much as possible, and now she suddenly had to transform several times a day, often maintaining the transformation for minutes at a time. She hardly had time for her swimming practice anymore because her legs and arms were so sore from training. Grabbing her laptop from nearby she put it in her lap and started looking for job offers. She wasn’t sure if she should tell Nat that she considered quitting her job because of her manager, or just quietly do her thing. Their financial situation wasn’t going to be shaken up if she was jobless for a bit. Heck, they had it pretty good at the school. A roof over their heads and free food and other amenities they could use. The part time job was really just for her own spending habits, namely whatever she spent on alcohol and cigarettes. nat

What she liked about Nat was that she was always willing to go along with her ideas. Well, mostly willing to go along with her ideas. When it came down to it, she knew she could sorta count on her roommate, but that sorta was all she needed in this moment to kick Mai’s ass. ‘‘Big swing incoming!!’’ She affirmed, following up on what Nat was cooking as she launched her roomie towards their teacher. Yoko couldn’t tell if her and Nat had ever been this united before. Maybe all they needed was a common enemy? The fact that Mai told the other students to shut up meant that she no longer had an active source to draw her anger from, and instead had to tune into the feeling itself. She doubted that their teacher did it in an attempt to sabotage her. Either way, she couldn’t help but grin when their classmates got told to shut up. What immediately wiped that grin from her face was the fact that Mai got around her punch and even managed to disengage. Annoying that their teacher was so fast, whoever had heard of a combat teacher being competent? It was equal parts frustrating because on one hand she had settled for losing in an embarrassing way, but on the other Mai had really gotten her riled up to want to beat her and it just wasn’t happening. To make matters worse, their combination attack didn’t hit, and now one of her arms was wrapped in a scarf again. She still couldn’t get over the fact that Mai was fighting with scarves. Not swords, not gauntlets, scarves. She was just about to tear herself free as Mai had anticipated, but paused when she saw that Nat had also been trapped. Instead, she tried to repurpose her strength and pull Nat towards her, only to give her booster into the air if she succeeded. ‘‘Nat, up high!’’ She called out, which meant that Mai might see it coming, but she didn’t care, all that mattered was that they kept attacking and kept applying pressure. ''Cool.'' She simply replied to Ryusei. That meant there was no pressure to this social interaction, just some random talking between classes before they had to go back to the grind. That suited her perfectly, names were a pain in the neck anyway. ''Yeah, agreeable.'' She agreed with him, trying to clarify further for Khepri. ''Like, if your stomach is sensitive or whatever. Is the food making you feel sick?''From the way he explained it Ryusei sounded like a total goody-two-shoes. Got inspired by other heroes as a kid and wanted to do it to save people? That checked out. Someone like him probably wouldn't be a rulebreaker. Khepri on the other hand... Their answer told her nothing. ''Egypt? Is that where you're from?'' She finished her bowl of noodles and took a sip of her water. ''My answer is short and sweet.'' She said, looking over at Ryusei. ''I don't want to become a hero. My shitty family is forcing me to do this.'' Something about her needing to set a good example and make the family name proud or whatever. Yoko clearly wasn't happy with it, but trying to make the most of her situation. When he asked her about the cloud she gave him a grumpy glare. ''Only when I'm having a bad day.'' She scowled. Which unfortunately for her, was every day. As she answered, the intensity of the rain grew a little stronger, but still remained completely isolated to just raining on Yoko. Resisting the urge to yell at her cloud, she was more than happy to shift the topic to whatever Khepri was trying to say. Something about math? ''Oi, Mafdet, what the hell are you talking about?'' She looked over at Ryusei. ''Is math your thing? Do you know what she means?''Mafdet KhepriRyusei Hachisuka

Another day, another training exercise. This time she had been paired up with that crazy person she had met at lunch the other day. What was their name again, Mafdet Khepri? The words that came out of their mouth made zero sense, which made her all the more relieved to hear that they were pairing up to spar against each other. That meant minimal talking, right? So long as Khepri wasn't secretly freakishly strong and embarrassed her, nothing could possibly go wrong with today's exercise. To make it easier on herself too she skipped right past the bullshit. As soon as they met up at the empty training field she pointed at Khepri. ''Let's get this thing started. If you surrender... I don't know just shout something weird or whatever.'' Not that she needed to tell her that. Still, as much as her opponent weirded her out, part of her liked that she was sparring against a fellow freak. That it wasn't some arrogant emitter quirk user who was too busy looking pretty to take the fight seriously. ''I'm not gonna hold anything back, so tough shit if you're weak.'' She did however, have the courtesy to put some distance between them before she engaged her transformation, turning blue, growing tusks, a tail and amplifying her muscles, yet somehow still remaining 5 feet tall. ''Show me what you got!'' She roared, charging at Khepri with her fist up, intending to take a swing at her once she got within range. There was no technique to her approach, it was brute force all the way because, well, Yoko was still an amateur. Mafdet Khepri

Isamu let out a grunt as Farrin kicked him back. Despite the blows Farrin were landing, the smile couldn't be wiped from Isamu's face as he seemed to enjoy himself the same way one would while sparring with an old friend. ''Quick thinking, Farrin O'Rourke!'' He praised his opponent while holding a hand over the spot where he was kicked. The hero student had put some distance between them now, but what was the worst he could do with it, retort? Panic? He wasn't exactly a pro, so the odds that he- Uh oh, he was taking aim at his comrades. Ah well, what could he do? The important part was that it looked like Farrin was having fun too. The guy controlling the centipede quickly ducked for cover, avoiding the stun round altogether while crying out. ''Holy shit Isamu, I thought you said you could handle him!'' Meanwhile, the woman barely moved from her spot, but simply grabbed one of her nearest allies to use as a meat shield, much to their dismay. ''OW! Damn it! Why me?!'' They protested after they got shocked and dropped to their knees. ''Sorry, you're too slow.'' She said coldly, the angel on her shoulder disappearing as she lifted her other arm to take aim, this time at Isamu. Yoko was seeing all this and trying to piece it all together as the events played out around her at lightning speed. She had never been in a combat situation before, not a real one anyway, only this simulated school ones, but they were nothing like this. Her leg was in horrible pain where she had been shot, but she wasn't bleeding or anything, in fact, it felt more like a strong phantom pain the longer she let it linger. With some effort, she could probably stand up again and help the other student. Meanwhile, Isamu immediately swung his knife at Farrin, hoping to catch him while he was shooting at his friends. Unfortunately, his momentum was halted by the adhesive round. ''No shit, you came prepared didn't you?'' Isamu grinned, looking down at his feet, pretending to be surprised while he fished out a hidden razor blade, tossing it at Farrin trying to cut him on the cheek. ''Isamu, heads up.'' The woman said, before uttering the phrase. ''Fair play.'' Another angel statue grew out of her other shoulder, taking aim at and firing at Isamu, but before the arrow could hit him, Yoko sprung up to try and help Farrin, just in time to get shot down by another arrow, sending her flying across the store past the dueling Isamu and Farrin. Strangely though, it felt as if her injuries were healing... ''Hey idiot! Are you okay?'' She called out for Farrin, unsure of whether she should get up from the cover she had landed behind. Farrin

Alongside Michael, the two of them were team gym gear... Maybe not the best hero duo name, but they had time to workshop that. The point was she also didn't really have her hero costume ready to go, but how could anyone expect them to? They were both first years after all. So, gym gear for the first evacuation and disaster type exercise it was. At least they were in it together. ''Damn right. We didn't get this far to fail.'' A bit of a weird statement for a fresh first year student to make, but to her it truly did feel like she had come much further than her first week at school. Now that she was beginning to take this hero thing a little more seriously, why would she want to fail on purpose? Besides, Michael had a dream that she had promised to help him accomplish, that meant she needed to make him look his absolute best during this training exercise. The teachers better be crying happy tears at the end of this thing. ''That's not a bad idea.'' She looked up at her rain cloud and gestured with her arm, as if she was trying and failing to move it forward. ''If only I could control where it rained and how much it rains.'' Perhaps the worst part was that her arms were too short to reach it, so she didn't even know if she could grab it, or her hands would just go right through. ''Well, whatever. Let's get this thing started.'' She motioned for him to follow her into the building. ''You better give it your all, Samaritan-kun.'' Her own personal way of saying she believed in him too, as roundabout as it was. Once inside the building looked... Just like any other building. If it wasn't for the empty street outside, Yoko would have thought they just walked right into a little slice of Tokyo itself. ''Up or down?'' She talked in a hushed voice, pointing up to indicate that maybe they should start heading up while they still had the chance. Before disaster struck. Unfortunately, the hero students didn't have long as suddenly, the building was hit by its first shake, startling Yoko as well as all the would-be civilians in need of rescuing. Samaritan

‘‘Yeah, I figured.’’ She tried not to show it, but she was secretly glad that they were on the same page. When Nat offered her hand out, Yoko carefully lifted the cat up to meet her, the little creature quick to nudge against her roommate’s hand, purring just as loudly. ‘‘Right? I adopted her so she’s going to be living with us now.’’ She let go of the cat and let it stretch out on her stomach before it jumped off the couch to brush up against Nat’s leg on its way to the water bowl. ‘‘Are you allergic to cats?’’ She asked out of curiosity, but it wasn’t like she was going to do anything about it, except maybe suggest Nat take allergy meds from now on. ‘‘You were gone for a while, what were you doing?’’ Yoko reached over to grab the book she had been reading before she almost fell asleep. Where had she left off? Something about a big plot twist… Her thoughts trailed off, but she did her best to actually listen to Nat. One, because she was bored and her friend had clearly been doing something more interesting with her day and two, because she might have bought food or snacks. Speaking of snacks, she perked up. ‘‘You liked sour stuff, right? I got some umeboshi from work that were about to go bad, they’re in the kitchen feel free to help yourself to some or whatever.’’ For some reason she couldn’t focus on reading, maybe she needed to sit up for a bit. Stretching her arms on the way up, Yoko yawned and took a sip of the glass of water she had left nearby, making sure to get up slowly so that she wouldn’t get dizzy. nat

''...We need to evacuate that?'' She stopped in front of a multistory building in the USJ, having to crane her neck up just so she could see the top. Either they had got the wrong building, or the teachers were seriously thinking her and Michael were somehow a collective thirty people in two costumes. She was immediately feeling pessimistic about the whole thing and doubting her own abilities. Her quirk didn't help her go fast, or fly. If anything she was at a blatant disadvantage here. She might even have given up early, had she not been paired with Michael. ''What do you think? I haven't done an emergency evacuation drill before.'' She looked over at her friend expectantly. If anyone believed they could do it, it was him. She opened her umbrella as she felt the rain cloud forming. Oh well, even if they failed, failing alongside Michael would be a whole lot more fun than failing alone. ''Sensei told us there'd be people in the building, but we're not allowed to know how many, just that we need to be prepared to act once disaster strikes.'' And judging from how barren and quiet their surroundings were, it would appear that disaster had yet to strike. ''If I'm gonna be honest, I never saw myself as a rescue hero. 'Oniki the Rescue Hero'? I don't see it, people would run away screaming.'' She said it with a smirk. That was the fate of someone stuck with her quirk. At least Michael could totally make it work because of his energy and personality. Samaritan

Oniki... Well, if she needed a placeholder for her hero name, why not just put Oniki? Anything she could think of herself was just guaranteed to be more cringe than that anyway. She let out another small chuckle at seeing him so excited over her name suggestion. Was it that good? A bit on the nose maybe, given his whole philosophy, but hero names were all about what meaning they had to the person and how easy they were to remember. She was laughing all the way up until he included her in his spoken fantasy, upon which she immediately grew flustered. ''O-Oi don't include me in your fantasy! I don't want people to think I'm cool!'' She protested with a hint of red on her face. After all, being cool was all about knowing you were cool, but never acknowledging it yourself, or something like that!! Indulging in the conversation as they walked she fired back with her own silly and serious suggestions. The walk home suddenly didn't feel all that taxing and she almost wondered if they had actually walked it. So that's what it was like to have a good conversation. To hang out with a friend... She could get used to that. Hopefully Michael wanted to hang out again soon, or maybe they might get paired for training exercises during class. When she finally reached her dorms she waved casually at Michael. ''See you in class!''Samaritan

Yoko once again found herself laying on the couch, but instead of just lazing around she was gently stroking the tiger patterned kitten that was resting on her stomach. Like a good roommate she had adopted a pet without telling Nat, but she knew Nat was about to come home soon too so it wasn't like it was that big of a deal. Unless she was allergic to cats of course. When she heard the door open she looked over lazily. ''Yo Nat.'' She didn't acknowledge the kitten at all, treating it as if they had always had a cat living with them. ''I've been thinking...'' The cat's purring against her body made her feel oddly relaxed. She felt like a monster, but this little kitten didn't mind. It didn't see her for her quirk, it just saw her for who she was, or at least that's how it felt. ''We're friends, aren't we?'' They had never really talked about it. Maybe because Yoko wasn't quick to throw the term around, or maybe because Nat didn't really bring it up either, but weren't they kind of? They hung out a lot and they were living together, and by now they knew a bit about each other's interests. That was kind of like what friends did wasn't it? Maybe it was blunt of her, but she felt the need to ask. If anything, just for her own sake so that it wouldn't keep her awake at night. nat

‘‘Nice going, Nat!’’ She grinned, knowing she could put her trust in her roomie. Maybe they had learned something from their sparring match against combat teacher Mai? Heck, if they passed this exercise they might just have to go thank her after, not that Yoko would suggest it. Going around thanking people so casually would ruin the image she was trying to build for herself. With all the seniors lined up barreling through them was easy, and to make matters better, she had the perfect weapon with her. Grabbing one of their seniors by the ankles she scooped them up and swung them at the other seniors, using them as a makeshift weapon. Mid-swing she stopped and looked over at Kaori. ‘‘Kaori!! You better not misfire that shit ball!’’ Their teammate just nodded awkwardly, before landing a hit on one of the seniors, causing them to lose their cool. In the aftermath they had managed to capture the villains and free the civilians but… ‘‘You girls…’’ Sadako sighed, putting a hand up to her temple. ‘‘After strategizing you concluded that sacrificing one of your own was the best way to move forward? You’re lucky it turned out okay, I can’t in good conscience reward you for being so reckless. In the future, I’d like to see you resolve your internal conflicts more peacefully.’’ She glanced down at her clipboard for a moment. ‘‘That being said, I’m letting all three of you pass.’’ Yoko was surprised, but she tried not to show it. ‘‘However…’’ Yup here it was, they were passing, but there was a catch. ‘‘You’re going to be assisting the janitor in cleaning up the campus after school for a week, starting tomorrow.’’ Sadako smiled brightly. Manual labor, great. Although, if she was doing it with Nat maybe it wasn’t too bad. Yeah, there were way worse punishments. nat

She blinked her eyes at his answer. ''If you say so, but don't just do it for me, or anyone else. Do whatever you want, Michael.'' For someone who was outwardly mean, she took boundaries and personal comfort very seriously. Same thing as Jun being uncomfortable with touch and her refusing to hit her during a sparring match. She knew what it was like to have boundaries and to be her own person, and since she refused to compromise on who she was, it was only fair that others did the same. Normally she wouldn't just let any stranger touch her hand, but context mattered and she had no reason to mistrust him or see him as just another shithead hero student. In fact, now that they were sitting here it felt nice. How long had it been since she held someone's hand? Usually all she was good at was pushing people away. Rarely did she meet someone as patient as Michael. ''Yeah.'' She trailed off, thinking about what he said about doing good and wanting to be good. ''If anyone ever gets in your way, if there are any 'villagers' you just tell me and I'll handle them for you.'' That was a promise, and Yoko wasn't someone who broke her promises. Breaking a promise was some straight up villain behavior. She glossed over the part about her dreams because she didn't want to think about it too hard. For today, she was fine with just having made a friend. Heck, in her world that was an enormous step forward. As they talked, the cloud gradually faded away into nothing, leaving a small rainbow over her head for a few seconds due to the sun that was shining down on them. When the rain stopped she put the umbrella away again in a manner that was automatic. She had done it countless of times, and sometimes hundreds of times in one day. ''Oniki?'' She sounded annoyed at first, but then couldn't help but let out a small chuckle at the sheer ridiculousness of the suggestion. ''That's too obscure, no one will get that reference.'' She stood up and dusted herself off. ''It's getting cold, I'm heading back to campus. Wanna come with?'' There was a pause as she offered him a hand to stand back up. Then she smirked, coming up with her own hero name suggestion for him. ''Samaritan.'' It wasn't as funny as Oniki, but she wasn't exactly a comedian either. Samaritan

‘‘You don’t know shit about me so you better-’’ She was about to go on a long tirade, but stopped when Nat dodged the attack and caused Kaori to hit herself with her own quirk. ‘‘Oi, what the hell is this?’’ She walked closer, which proved to be a mistake as she just narrowly avoided Kaori’s hand as she swiped at her. ‘‘Anger Ball?’’ She glanced over at Nat, not wanting to take her eyes off their ‘teammate’ if she was about to go berserk. ‘‘It’s called OBEY you IDIOTS! That’s what you were supposed to do!’’ She shouted, throwing a tantrum as she charged up another anger ball, but before she could sent it off after anyone Yoko stepped in and slapped her hand out of the way, using her troll quirk to restrain her and hold her down. With the added muscles from her quirk, it was a piece of cake to keep Kaori from attacking either of them anymore. ‘‘Are you insane?? You’re attacking your own teammates, do you realize what you’re doing?!’’ Yoko and Kaori quickly entered a shouting match, shouting insults back and forth at each other a few times. ‘‘I bet my quirk didn’t work on you because you’re an ugly monster!’’‘‘It didn’t work because I’m always angry you fucking idiot!’’Once things finally calmed down and both Kaori and Yoko were out of breath, Yoko turned to Nat. ‘‘I have an idea, I know exactly what our battle plan should be.’’Getting ready to storm the villain camp, Kaori stood there, sobbing. ‘‘I can’t believe you’re doing this to me.’’‘‘Shut up! You attacked us first!’’ Yoko roared, pointing a finger at her, resisting the temptation to deck Kaori in the face then and there. The plan was simple. Kaori was to charge in through the middle and draw away all the attention from the villains, while her and Nat swept in from the side, used the distraction to rescue the hostages and take down as many villains as they could. The result was predictably, exactly what they were hoping for. Kaori was surrounded in seconds, thank god their seniors weren’t allowed to use their quirks. ‘‘She’s alone? Is it a trap?’’ Before one of the seniors could finish his thoughts Yoko dropped down from the trees above, squashing him with her added troll transformation weight. ‘‘Freeze villains, or I’ll dismember your friend!’’ She growled, holding onto the one villain she had managed to capture like her life depended on it. What their seniors probably didn’t realize was that Yoko was only the second distraction. The most underrated member of their team, Nat, had all the opportunities she could want to act now. Fight the villains and save the hostages? It was completely within reach. ''Jeez, some hero you are...'' Chuckled one of their seniors, a little frightened by Yoko. nat
