If there was one trait that could be said to define Yugure Saori it was curiosity. From a young age she loved nothing more than to observe, learn and interact with all manner of things. Not to mention people. What interested her most was how seemingly small things could bring immense changes. A dropped cup of coffee could ruin a person's entire day, souring their mood and spreading their anger and annoyance to everyone around them. Likewise a single act of kindness or moment of good luck could brighten up their day and spread like a wave of positivity. Everything seemed connected, as if some invisible string was tied to each and every being, object and phenomenon alike, their interactions producing the intricately woven tapestry called history. It never ceased to awe her how much a single change could affect everything that came after.

In none had she found an example so poignant as in her childhood friend Kawahara Ruri. 

For as long as Saori had known her Ruri had been a bundle of positivity, somehow remaining unmarred despite her unfortunate circumstances. No matter what happened she always seemed to bounce back and before she knew it Saori had found herself growing attached to Ruri. When Saori found out she'd become orphaned a few words in the right ears were all that it took to have her included in the family. It was one of the first times Saori realized how much power not just words but her words could hold. As ever, it made her want to learn more and see what she could truly accomplish.



Junior high school was an enlightening experience. Having made sure her grades were good enough to transfer to a high-end school a fair distance away from her home Saori took to her new habitat like a fish to water. A social environment where no one knew her proved to be the catalyst that allowed her to refine her skills, for those outside of her family were in one way far harder to influence yet in another far easier. With her conscience getting in her way far less Saori managed to influence changes she could have only dreamed about, albeit even then she made sure to keep her every action morally acceptable. Before long she'd made it onto the student council, became its president when the former one graduated and by the time of her own graduation did so as her year's valedictorian.



To everyone's surprise Saori didn't continue on to an even more prestigious high school. With her tests done and her abilities proven she picked one far closer to home in order to be around her family instead. While it was still a rather demanding one she chose the decrease in difficulty left her with far more free time for other pursuits. More practical ones. Part-time jobs to gain experience in the real world were paired with volunteer work and political inquiries to see all sides of society. The more Saori saw the more she wished to see what change she could bring.

To ensure the stability she'd need she started by establishing a consulting firm once she graduated, using the connections she'd made to ensure lucrative contracts and rapidly building the company up into a small but influential business. Sweeping through the professional world she affected as many changes as she could, trying her best to always ensure she left any place better when she left it than it had been when she arrived. Even so, as much as securing a windfall for herself and her loved ones was important, the impact she managed to make wasn't nearly as impressive as she'd have wanted.



She knew that there was only so much one person could do no matter how much they devoted themselves to something. With the correct guidance however the actions of but a single individual could make all the difference. When it came to pro heroes there was far more than one of them out there. By their hundreds they patrolled, fought and reacted to whatever threat came within sight. It was the most inefficient method Saori had ever seen. So, after years of preparation, Contessa was born. An identity meant not to take point but to guide heroes onto the right track. To redirect efforts to where they would become needed instead of counting on coincidence to have a hero be where something went wrong. For the right person in the right place at the right time could make all the difference.

Over time Saori found that even with her assistance a great many tragedies remained unpreventable. The law, while it protected, also hindered. There was nuance in all things and while there was a time for red tape there was also a time where it did nought but get in the way. So, the identity of The Weaver was born. Both to create another layer of separation between her identities and to adopt a different methodology entirely. Vigilantes and heroes each had different advantages and disadvantages. Lack of legality made organizing far more difficult for vigilantes yet gave them far more flexibility in their ability to prevent harm. Not to mention their tendency to actively seek out injustice gave them a far closer connection to the communities they protected. Where for heroes Contessa commanded and guided, for vigilantes The Weaver would connect them to those they needed, and those who needed them. 

Yet it was still but a drop in the bucket. When harm came once more to those close to her Saori finally acknowledged that she was missing part of the equation. The other side of the coin. Villainy was like a tide. It could not be stopped entirely, only redirected. There would never cease to be downtrodden that took to crime, nor sociopaths craving a high or the insane making their whims everyone else's problem. Much like a real tide it was easy to get swept up in villainy and never rise above the water's surface again. The identity of The Spider was created with even more care than that of The Weaver. For of all her identities this one was the most dangerous, not just to herself but to those she cared for as well. With high stakes came high rewards and so too was it perhaps the one with which she could get the furthest.

For while her intentions were to protect, what as ever truly defined Saori was her curiosity. She wished to know how much she could accomplish with connections to all three sides of the conflict. How close she could get to the flame before it burned and how long she could dance across the razor's edge before it came back to bite her. What heights she could reach. What a web she could weave. Megalomaniacs were made with less but even so Saori did not lose track of her priorities.

The creation of a safe haven for those she cared for. As The Spider, Saori took the role of an info broker, selling and gifting intel alike when it best suited her. Not only did she control what info she gave but more importantly what she didn't give, leaving all ignorant as to whether they were following their own path or merely dancing to her tune. 

Ever closer she drew to her goal. Heroes affected, vigilantes connected and villains distracted. A hundred swirling streams redirecting the tide in a way none noticed, leaving a small island of safety for her loved ones amidst Tokyo's ocean of crime. It was one that was far from perfect, a web that required constant adjusting and risked being torn at the slightest mishap. Yet imperfect and labor intensive as it was it left Saori in the perfect position to affect the changes she wished for. One small nudge at a time.
