Mary was left in the care of a local church as her parents couldn't afford to take care of their child. When she was admitted to the church, she was given a name and a place to call home. Everything was fine as Mary got along with some of the kids there, though her interactions with them weren't always easy. Mary's chary disposition made it difficult to befriend anyone, even those with good intentions. She learned early on that not everyone possesses a good heart, as one of the children had tried to persuade her into doing something that could get her in trouble. Even though the child appeared friendly at first, she quickly knew that he had other ideas and he wanted to get Mary involved.
Leaving Mary neglected so that she could become absorbed into a world of comic books, reveling in the idea that maybe some day she could be a cool and bold as the heroes in the stories wasn't an option as she was easily swept by other kids mischievous plans to prank their caretakers. Peace in the church was oftentimes clashed with the dubious children who wanted to make things difficult for the caretakers, yet Mary couldn't help but feel that the kids who had been orphaned and sanctioned in the church made the place feel lively. Whenever she was dragged into a ridiculous idea of a prank, she would lie about participating, only to wander off and explore the church grounds. The church had been around for awhile, having established itself sometime before quirks had become common. As she was exploring, she got a glimpse of something truly horrifying. It wasn't anything that she had seen from a comic book, but more in a horror movie as the scene was a bloody mess.
A villain had came and claimed his prize, luckily she wasn't spotted by the villain for she kept her self hidden as she watched him defile a couple of deceased staff who worked for the church. She didn't know what to do except call for help. Soon as her body bolted from the scene of the crime, the villain took notice and gave chase. It wasn't until she was in the heat of the moment that her quirk had manifested, out of sheer desperation she took care of the villain who had claimed the lives of two innocent people. When a wandering staff member of the church came to investigate the strange noise, they were met with the same sight that Mary had witnessed. However, instead of running to help Mary she was instead accused of the killings of a missing staff member and the man who invaded holy grounds, forcing her to flee and live the rest of her teenage life on the streets up to adulthood.
