"Heroes are a plague." Rei hisses in response, his lip curling as though he's smelled a rotting corpse. "I think I'd rather have the vigilantes patrol the streets rather than them. No concept of heroics. No white or black. No idiots fighting over worthless spots on a podium for fame. Just deliver the justice to those who deserve it and be done with it, however it may be done, no questions asked." Rei pauses, unsure as he finds his way back onto the footpath. "Probably not the answer you were looking for considering how politics go with strangers, but I don't care. That's just how I feel."[break][break]
He rounds another corner, listening for the telltale sound of the flickering neon sign of the bar next to his apartment. It fizzes in his ear as he searches his pocket for his keys, fumbling for the keyhole as another thought pops into his head. The familiar icy trickle of warning pricked the hairs on the back of the librarian's neck as the villain closed in on him, and Rei's grip on his cane tightened- if he could see anything here, then it was recognising that getting touched by them would be a bad idea. He was ready to draw on the awful creature, even if it meant getting in trouble, but he had always found removing other people's fingers to be a more fun alternative than to falling prey to those who dared to lay their hands on him. Though, the girl seemed to answer to his plight faster than he could.[break][break]
Rei kept one hand on his cane, planting it into the ground next to him as he stared down at where he had heard the villain thump to the ground. He had a multitude of mixed emotions, the most prominent one being regret as he hadn't gotten to give the freak a taste of his own medicine. Others being irritation over the girl next to him lamenting over something he'd only growled and bickered over, but never not really regretting being: quirkless.[break][break]
"Don't be sorry," Rei responded, adjusting his grip on his cane so it would poke at the villain to determine if he was really out of the count or not. "just acknowledge that you can be better than what you think you are. Being quirkless never stopped me. Got me in trouble because people picked on me, but it didn't stop me."[break][break]

Rei frowns. He doesn't. The only person he's ever really stopped to help is himself because no one ever does for him. Sure, he'll get the occasional person to lend him a hand but that's only because he tripped on a loose tile- he knows everyone looks at him awkwardly when they see the cane in his hand and his blank eyes looking through them like he had just returned home from war overseas after killing a dozen men. They don't help him, he doesn't help them. It might have been a selfish way to look at the world, but the librarian is hardly someone to care about anyone else's opinions.[break][break]
"No." Rei responds bluntly. [break][break]
He places the book within his bag and lets the silence hang for a moment, debating on what to say next. "I probably would have eventually found a way out of the situation. And if I didn't, well, who's to care what happens to me?" He adds sourly. "The heroes don't. They might help me out if they see a thug, but in the end that's just their job, and they still pack up their bags at the end of the day and go home. Doesn't matter what happens to me afterward. Do you ever stop to think about why you shouldn't help someone?" [break][break]

"Leave me be." He huffed as he attempted to navigate his way around the beast, dragging his cane behind him as he stepped out onto the street, ultimately forgetting where he was due to going on an unbeaten path- but like hell he was going to admit that. Since when had that ever been a problem for him?[break][break]
From day one, he hadn't even gotten either of the stick. He'd gotten nothing. Rei would take being quirkless over being blind any day, to see what the world looked like, so brilliant in colours and creatures rather than the darkness and the light he was so used to- but even that was asking for too much. To have a little place in the world was something he could only hope to ask for, hope to think about, but it's a dead, pipe dream and one he knows better than to think about. So he gets a little fed up, knowing that there's someone taking something so precious for granted and feeling so sorry for themselves.[break][break]
"And I'm blind," Rei harshly snaps back, stubbornly refusing to move from his position. "what do you want me to do? Dress in a grass skirt and do the hula to distract this freak?"[break][break]
Though, begrudgingly, he did feel something for this poor self-deprecating girl. He was talking crassly because he couldn't be bothered and wanted nothing to do with whatever cords they'd struck over each other, but Rei would be lying if it didn't strike one in himself too. To think you couldn't do anything just because you were quirkless- impossible. If he had a quirk he would be on top of the world by now, but he had done just fine along the way without one. Rei squints sightlessly- honestly, he wouldn't have cared much if he was burnt on the spot then and there. Living a mundane, useless life as someone as powerless as him, a man with no quirk or eyes, has caused him to live on a day-to-day basis. Not looking to the future, and only looking in the now. Whatever came to him, he was there to witness it, but not any further than that- doing that required commitment, and the librarian wasn't exactly the type of person to care about anyone, or anything. He doesn't really know what to do, or what to think when his fingers eventually land on the book he missed after fumbling for a few moments, staring quietly, at whatever was in front of him. "... Thanks." Rei said, tone not unlike a child sulking after they had been one-upped by an older sibling. Fitting, but also confusing, considering he should have been more shaken up. But he's more bewildered at the random act of kindness rather than almost being shivved.[break][break]
"What... are you?" Rei eventually musters up the courage to say, staring upwards at where he thinks the beast is. "If you sent them running that quickly, then I'd guess... transformation quirk of some kind. Why bother helping me?"

Rei sighs for the umpteenth time today at the man's words lamenting over the choice he had made earlier in the day; to come into work, or not come into work. He could have stayed in his warm and cozy apartment, watched the rain drops dribble down the stained window, see as these idiots went rampant in the streets trying to catch this foreigner, made a cup of hot cocoa... but he needed the money for his Uni courses. But he could have gone on a paid leave for just an extra day over the weekend... but money...[break][break]
It's a common thought process for him- to badger over something completely irrelevant whilst someone threatened his life. In Shinjuku, as a man blind and quirkless, you tend to get used to these sorts of things reaaaaaaal quickly.[break][break]
So when his blade shrriinggs in sound as he unsheathes it, swinging it upwards and across the face of whatever this dumb bastard's name was, all Rei can think about is what he's going to have for lunch today.[break][break]
"Maybe those pancakes from that little old lady down the road... never too early for pancakes," Rei muses as backs away, readying his sword by his cheek as he gets into a too-familiar fighting stance. When the next one comes for him, he's ready- diving foot first over the front desk so the decades old equipment doesn't get damaged, setting up in an open area of the foyer where the sound doesn't echo too much. "Or the avocado toast that Jiji makes... he owes me that much for this today."

He braces himself for the inevitable thwack that he's about to receive, a sense of pain he's familiar with given his disposition of being "easily" bulliable young man. Rei would have given an overly exaggerated sigh at the prospect of someone gripping his collar, but he's learned to bite his tongue to prevent any unnecessary further... events that he might be at a disadvantage in. Honestly, if he had a dollar for every time some entitled prick had grabbed him by his scruff like he was a kitten that needed to be badgered, he would be a millionare by now. Possibly even a millionare that could afford certified quirk-related surgery that enabled him to see! What a marvel that would be.[break][break]

"What guy?" Rei tried to play dumb, fumbling once more for his headphones for a second before bringing them up. He would use his blindness excuse as a last resort- he didn't exactly like playing that card as a weakness. "In case you haven't noticed, I was working. Had my headphones on. If someone came in here, I honestly didn't see or hear them. If I had known there was something going on in the area, I would have dipped ages ago."[break][break]
Oh for god's sake. Was he really risking his neck for this random foreigner he had never met before? What the hell was wrong with him? He really needed to stop being nice to people who didn't deserve it. Of course, Rei heard the sound before seeing it.
First, amongst the cheerful cries from the children climbing the monkey bars in the playground, was a young girl's voice. She didn't sound to be very old- maybe around the same age as him if he guessed correctly. Usually he would pay it no mind, continuing to enjoy the company of the birds who came to be at his side with peace, but he knew something was wrong the instant they took flight not a moment after that nameless person behind him had talked presumably about that tree that strange entity was hiding behind.[break][break]
Firstly, he was mildly annoyed that the only company who didn't irritate him had been scared away.[break][break]
Secondly, he was overly annoyed that someone was starting a fight. Here. In a park. Could have been the streets, or the beach, where all the noise was supposed to happen- he didn't care. Just not here.[break][break]
When the girl lands but a dozen feet away from his position, he shifts again, though he doesn't bother to look at her. "You alright back there... miss?" Rei asked, tone indifferent, though he's trying to indirectly inquire about what's happening while still seeming like an idiot with the attention span of a three month old puppy. "It's a great tree and all, but you probably shouldn't be climbing it, or whatever you were doing."

The instant she moves to snatch his cane, he responds with equal vigour.[break][break]
The scream she emanates as her amputated fingers fall to the ground with the blood like gentle raindrops are an absolute melody to his sensitive ears. He ducks out of the range of her punch like a snake in oil, under her exposed waist which also leaves another opening for him to slash at, effectively putting that dastardly woman out of her realm of expectation and into his, now controlling the flow of battle. He readies the sword within the cane's open sheath, fingertips hovering over it as he backed away from the other two people now by the woman's side, desperately asking her if she was okay.[break][break]
What did they think? That fingers were going to grow back if they wished hard enough? Did they expect extra points of gratitude for shaking down a blind man so foolishly as they did?[break][break]
He heard the one with the shorter gait straighten up and sprint towards him whilst the other larger one stayed at the woman's side, their tone of voice leading him to believe that they were all woman, Rei sighing in exasperation regardless of whoever might prompt to attack him. His gaze was blindly drawn towards the ground, unfocused- it was one extreme advantage towards his blindness. Practically no one could tell where he was going to attack, and it proved his point when he drew himself backwards when his opponent swung at him, Rei readying his blade by his cheek, only to stab straight downwards and skewer her foot, cueing a shout that sent the cats that had prowled back in curiousity flying once more.[break][break]
Slowing himself to concentrate as he continued to move backwards, Rei readied himself- but of course, he wasn't ready for the other gang member to suddenly appear behind him. Bless quirks.

Rei doesn't react much in terms of responding to the foreigner's foreign words- in fact he felt a little satisfaction in realising that something wasn't right about the situation at hand. He shifted slightly, stare still unfocused on the man- of course, he can only look in the direction of his voice rather than making direct eye contact. If anything, it just seemed like Rei was staring right through him. "Of course we do," Rei replied in exasperated English- he has an accent, but he's clear enough to understand without needing to repeat himself. "And no, you can't. I need some form of I.D so I can come after you if you hurt my books."[break][break]
At his next sentence, the librarian sighed and shook his head, deciding not to question whatever the hell everyone outside the building was getting up to at that moment. As long as it didn't involve him or Jiji, he didn't give one single shit. His entire disposition and attitude said "leave me the fuck out of this" as he turned back to his computer, about to continue talking but only jumping in fright at the response of the entrance doors swinging open. What the hell! Those doors were heavyset oak and thick in weight, who on earth had an attitude stewed in sewage enough to force them open like that?[break][break]
So the law was chasing this man. Frankly, Rei wished he had found another librarian to bother, as whoever had come barging in had pissed him off more than this random person in front of him had. Thankfully he had enough sense to shush them, something Rei appreciated greatly.[break][break]
Somewhere to hide? Whatever, as long as it got these goons to go away. Rei focused for a moment to determine where exactly he was, before pointing behind himself and to the left. "Bookcase under the stairwell." He said in English. "You can pull it out and hide under it if you like, I don't care."[break][break]

The dissonant whine of police sirens alerts him to unwelcome company before this person runs into the foyer and down to his desk, Rei momentarily pausing in his typing to listen to them. They've been running- they're out of breath, which is something that immediately sets him on edge. Who runs into a library? Everyone knows libraries aren't for running- or for talking for that matter. He would have much preferred for them to shout so he could snap at them to shhh and leave for being a poor, impulsive sport and disturbing him.[break][break]
"A ...library card?" Rei sounds far too inquisitive at that question as he hangs his headphones around his neck, a brow raising as he looks in the voice's general direction. Who asks for library cards these days? Just moments ago he was under the impression that no one really cared about books in his town. That isn't their real voice, either. There was something else to it. Even more suspicious. "Do you have an I.D on you? Or any type of verification?"[break][break]
There's shouting going on outside- and there's a lot of it, by the seems. God, he hopes it doesn't come in here, because he really doesn't have enough patience available today to deal with much else after having to rip books. Given that Jiji hasn't followed him up on what's happening out there, there shouldn't be a problem, but he's still curious. "What's going on out there? Someone spike the punch at a club again?" At that weird and out of place sentence, Rei shrugs. "Happened around here a couple times. Still haven't caught the perpetrator."

He gets the answer to his question in physical form when the women in front of him takes his collar in her hands and slams him into the nearest wall, prompting him to drop his bag with a loud clutter on the ground, the wind immediately being knocked from his chest. Ouch. He could have dodged that, but as someone like him who couldn't fight brazenly with pride and prejudice, he was forced to use the cockiness of others to his advantage to get what he wanted. Whoever else was with her, the lackeys or rather, immediately snatched it as soon as he hit the wall, and Rei grimaces when he felt her hot breath filter down his neck.[break][break]
"There was really no need to do that," Rei grunted, not at all liking how tense this woman's attitude was- someone with her level of sensitivity, he wouldn't be surprised if her next action was to wrap her hands around his throat. He heard his things clatter to the ground as the others rummaged through his belongings, something that he rolls his eyes at. "See, look? Nothing valuable. Can I go now?"[break][break]
Her grip tightened. Not the right choice of words. "Not 'till you give us something," She hisses back. "what's on you? ...That cane of yours looks mighty pricey," He can feel her shift to look down at the sheathed sword he's holding a vice grip onto. "how bout that?"[break][break]
At that, his frown darkens. Take the books, he would get angry- but his cane? Not on his life.

"Alright," Rei sighed in response, putting his headphones back on as he heard Jiji eventually amble away back to his office. Tagging was heinous. Tagging was awful. Tagging was bullshit. He hated feeling those rips in those books, the tears in their covers and the roughness of their pages, and he wishes he knew who did such a hateful crime to these poor souless souls who's life was only to ever educate others. Throwing those books out was like putting up a beloved baby for adoption. Absolutely inconceivable![break][break]
The narrator of the computer he was using directed him towards the registration of books, Rei grimacing as he took them away from the list. He hated it. He hated it.[break][break]
Then, he felt the desk he was sat by be tapped, Rei taking his headphones off, Jiji with another quip on his lips. "By the way, there were some police cars in the area earlier. Nothing on public alerts yet, but just keep your ears open, yeah?"[break][break]
The librarian thought for a moment after nodding. Had he gone after any gangs recently to injure them so badly to elicit such a response? He didn't think so. The heroes didn't bother with small-time talk in this area, only the policemen- and even then it was only interest in the innocent, not in gang-on-gang wars. Something else might have been going on. Sighing, Rei fumbled for a moment before finding his cane, making sure he was ready to duck and find his boss at any moment should someone come crying in. He sincerely didn't know what anyone would want with a library, but there were certainly some weird kooks in this day and age.
