Between her practical experiences when training with Jun, Farrin and Zen and her drive to become stronger Emi had decided to pursue something she hadn't consider before—support Gear. The bread and butter of Hero work for a lot of the pros she had initially discounted this as an option given that she didn't have any skill with a weapon and wasn't sure, given her frame, any support gear would actually be able to support her without shattering. This was until she had a talk with Freja who had worked with an upperclassman on developing her new bat that gave her hope. She had initially contacted Ana in hopes she could give her the same treatment, but she was quoted as "Too busy for a simple project like that that anyone could do if they had a brain " which...maybe it wasn't such a bad thing. She did however direct her to another classmate of hers who was skilled in engineering that agreed to meet up with her.

Emi was understandably nervous and had never been to the support labs before this. She knew nothing about this person aside from a name, Kei Hada. Most of the upperclassmen were pretty scary in her eyes aside from Jun. Everyone else she had met was intimidating even a lot of the first years seemed to instantly fit in with this crazy school. With extremely nervous energy she approached the lab they were supposed to meet and knocked on the closed door "H-Hello? I'm Emilia Hall I was sent here by Ana for help with a support gear request?" She wouldn't enter until the door was opened, as she didn't want to interrupt whatever her senpai was doing.

It wasn't often that Kei's services were requested because Ana refused a project and recommended that he take it on instead.

That was a lie. It was.

Not that Kei minded. They did this for each other all the time, where Ana did that while Kei redirected students' requests to her when they required her expertise. He can be realistic. He didn't understand every scientific concept out there. He won't jeopardize a project because he was too proud to realize he wasn't the right person for the job.

So he was glad Ana thought he was for this one, even if he wasn't the hero student's first choice.

Kei was on a step ladder when the girl arrived, with tools he finished using in his arms as he organized them back on the shelf where they belonged. He turned at the call of her voice and smiled. "Hey! Yeah, you've come to the right place!" Shelving the rest of this things, he stepped down and greeted her, hand offered for a handshake. "Name's Kei Hada! Ana mentioned me. What can I do for ya?"

Emi felt like she could breathe again once Kei began speaking. It was so nice to hear someone speak normally in this crazy school, and this was reflected in her eyes as they lit up, eagerly shaking his hand and introducing herself. "Emilia Hall. 1st Year Hero Course. It's super nice to meet you!" with more enthusiasm than before now that she wasn't as nervous.

From there, it was all about explaining herself as best as she could. "I wanted to get something to help me in combat. To make up for something I'm lacking," she would reflexively clench her first thinking of the frustrating display she had shown in front of her senpai. "You see, my quirk makes me stronger and tougher through cosmic radiation. It's not harmful to others but..." she would engage her quirk at this time to let Kei see briefly what she was referring to the extra weight making the floor creak as blue wisps of cool energy enveloped her body and escaped into the air around her turning back into nothing "My problem is all I can do is punch hard and take hits. If I can't get close to my target I'm...useless." there was an emphasis on the word unintentionally on her part as she disabled her quirk returning to her regular form. "I-Is there anything I can do to help with that?"

Normal, non-stressful interactions were always a plus in his book. It's why he liked the support labs so much. For all the failed experiments he had to help clean after, it didn't happen nearly as often as him just working on some creation he had. No evil was lurking in the darkness. No one was staring straight into his soul. It was just a nice, calm time talking shop with someone who wanted to overcome a weakness.

Cross-shaped eyes would widen at the glow, and it caused him to step back on instinct despite the hero student saying the energy was harmless. "Ooooh cosmic energy, that's so cool though!" Kei let out a hum as he looked on. "But I see. It'd be hard when you're against someone who could hit you from far away." Squinting in thought, Kei walked to the table to grab his journal and started to jot notes down, mind already churning. "I think I have an idea on how to up the range of your Quirk. Does the radiation always envelop you or can you control where you emit it?"

Emi could have cried with how happy this interaction made her. It was stressful with all the people she had met so far, even with the most straightforward conversations. Plus, with how much she embarrassed herself on the yacht trip, she felt extra sensitive. This, combined with her forwardness toward her mentor, she wanted to push herself to prove she could do this. Being a hero was more important to her than she initially thought!

She would blush at the compliment being given by Kei. He had likely met dozens of people with different quirks and yet he thought hers was cool?? Flattery will get you everywhere. "Uhm...at first I thought I could only use my quirk over my whole body but a few students gave me some pointers" she would clench her fists as the aura surrounding her began to lessen as it flowed towards her arms, the output of the cosmic aura increasing tenfold around her arms. "Like this? If I focus it enough and punch really really hard it lets me hit like a few inches in front of me." she would relax as the aura flowed back to its natural position "But there's not really much else I can do about it." If anyone could help her figure this out it would be an upperclassman!

Kei eyed the brighter glow on the girl's arms, smiling as his pen continued to fly across paper. "I see, thanks for demonstratin'! Gives me a better understandin' of what we could do here. And don't worry, figurin' out what else you can do is my specialty." He closed his journal and set it down. "Kinda wanna test somethin' actually." With that declaration he ventured to the shelves that dominated one of the walls. Well, all the walls had them, but this one had what he wanted.

"Let's get a proof of concept." Kei procured a jar, large enough to fit a hand in. He held it out for the hero student to take. "What I wanna know is if the energy could be contained in some way. If you put your hand in this jar then use your Quirk, does it leak out of the openin' by your wrist? If it does, then that means I could make somethin' that could hold on to your radiation so you can dispel all of it at once. That way you can slowly build up that energy to increase your range without pushin' yourself."

For the first time outside of her roommates Emi felt that she had finally met someone who understood her. Kei's kindness was more refreshing than anything, making her feel like she could be more herself. A rosy red flooded her cheeks as she smiled wholeheartedly. "Of course! I'm asking you for help; after all, I gotta make it easy for you!" she would watch eagerly as he shuffled about the workshop procuring a jar.

With her always expressive face, Kei would see the skepticism, which soon turned to wonderment after the more detailed explanation. "Oh! That makes a lot of sense. I've never tested that myself." she would carefully extend her arm into the jar before focusing specifically on that limb to generate as much radiation as possible. Much to her excitement, it looked like Kei's theory was correct as the radiation pooled around the opening before flowing out and dissipating after contact with the air. "So...it's kind of like overfilling a glass?" Emi was pretty average overall with grades, so the conceptual idea Kei was referring to was somewhat lost on her, and she hoped she didn't seem too simple-minded. Wait...why did she care so much about his opinion?

Talking to someone so friendly and honest was such a breath of fresh air that it almost made Kei jealous. So open was she to share the pros and cons of her power, and to ask for aid with getting more out of it. If only that was all he worried about when it came to his own. His smile remained. He was happy for her, really. "Which is why I'm thankin' ya! I know we both benefit but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate the thought."

He deemed the girl's next thought an A+ on effort but she didn't quite reach the same conclusion he did. Kei wiggled his hand in a so-so motion. "In a sense yeah." Kei poked at the jar with his pen. "I'm very literal when I say I needed to know if this could be contained. There's Quirks nowadays that let people just go through things, so I had to see for myself that this didn't do that so my idea could even be feasible in the first place." His mind immediately went to Farrin, who used his Quirk to conjure a wall that matter could still pass through but at a much slower pace. In a way it meant that his energy also passed through matter if it could influence its speed. Which meant that Kei couldn't ignore the possibility that Emilia's did the same.

Luckily, it didn't. Which made his job much easier. "So here's what I'm thinkin'." Sketching on his journal some more, the support student eventually flipped it to show Emilia a drawing of a pair of gloves. "Braces on your arms, in a material that's light yet could withstand a lot of your energy. Since it'll be withheld and not dissipate in the air like it's doin' now, you could just build it up over time and have more of your radiation to work with. How does that sound?"

Emi may have been out of her depth, but Kei was indeed a kind person. He didn't talk down to her and didn't mock her for not knowing the concepts he was discussing with her. She would continue to nod to be polite even though she didn't quite understand what was going on, opting to remove her hand from the jar once she felt he had enough data. "Oh that makes sense!" she chimed in, having met a small handful of people with wildly varied quirks in her short tenure at UAU.

Once he flipped the paper around, it would all make more sense to her. "Oh, so if the radiation by my quirk is how my powers work...then this would let me control it better?" Her eyes widened as she realized what she could do with something like this. Even in her test earlier at punching the rock during the ultimate training, she was able to direct the energy into her arm instead of it flowing freely, and when she punched, it went a few feet forward. So if she could keep the energy there... "You're amazing, Kei!" she shouted suddenly before turning beet red and placing her hands on her cheeks. "I mean, you're an amazing genius...not that amazing in another way becaus- Wait no I don't mean you're not amazing I just-" she felt herself completely burning up, unable to clarify what she meant. Was this...was this love at first sight?

So Kei knew he was smart. He knew this, not out of an inflated ego but because his place in UAU was proof that he was allowed to think this of himself. His years of hard work had made him confident in his ability to innovate while remaining humble when it came to his prowess in his craft.

It didn't change the fact that someone highlighting his genius caught him off guard, every single time.

His face mimicked hers in colour, flustered by the sudden compliment as he let out a sudden laugh. "Uh- thank you?" And now Emilia was stumbling over her words oh God. Kei waved a hand to try to placate her. "Oh it's okay! I get it I think?" Not his best attempt but hopefully she understood that he understood what she meant. Yep. That sure was a sentence.

"Anyways-" another chuckle escaped him as he tried to steer their conversation back to the task at hand. "Yes, better control! You could even condense this energy into these gloves to pack a bigger punch if you want." Kei dug into his pocket for his phone, navigating to his contacts before offering it to her. "If that works for you, you could put your details in my phone and I'll let you know in your preferred method when your gear's ready to test!"

If only he realized what his actions looked like.

Oh my god were they...were they flirting? Emi could barely even look at Kei, but his acceptance of the compliment and subsequent blush was a good sign! Her heart was beating a bit quicker, and she tried to shake the butterflies she felt in her stomach. "Y-You're welcome!" she managed to get out before going silent once again.

She would suddenly snap out of this stupor when she was told how she could use the new gauntlets that Kei proposed. If she could master something like this, then she wouldn't fall behind! In a situation like the one with Jun, she wouldn't have to throw herself directly into danger. She may have discovered she was bulletproof, but there were much more dangerous situations where she would need to find another way to fight. "U-uhm..." her hand trembled as she reached for Kei's phone and put her cellphone number in it. "Y-Yeah, that works for me! You can just, uhm...text me? Any time really!" her face turned a dark red, unable to believe that she could just say that. Love at first sight was really real!

While Emilia had butterflies, all Kei felt was relief over her choice of communication. Text, thank God. He always thought email was too formal to send to someone his age, and nevermind the idea of calling this person. Not that she was a bad person to talk to- he just didn't handle calls well due to how often he jumped from one topic to the next. His stammering made them longer than necessary. So once Kei retrieved his phone from her he gave a thumbs up. "Sounds good! And I'll be takin' this too." He took back the jar as they did enough testing.

The support student hummed as he held the container in his hands. "I think that should be it! Unless there's somethin' else you wanna bring up?" He'd never been good at ending these sort of meetings. They usually concluded on the client's terms, once they were satisfied with the plans of bringing their equipment to fruition.

Emi felt a mix of apprehension and oddly enough...excitement? There were a lot of unknowns now, but the way Kei acted probably meant he felt the same about her as she did for him. She had never spoken to a boy in that way before, and she desperately wished there was someone to give her advice at the moment before she did anything stupid. He was definitely giving her an out, and she didn't know how to end this whole exchange so she chose to go with her gut. "I u-uh..." she stammered before giving Kei a full bow. "Thanks for all your hard work!" before she could even hear a response, she hurried out of the lab at a speed faster than walking but slower than fully running. Once she was out of sight, she would finally exhale, slumping down against a wall as she pulled out her phone. From there, she would start a text with her roommates 'You guys won't believe what happened...' She probably should have realized that Kei was being nice but...well, she was a hopeless romantic after all.
