Frankly, considering her young age Makoto didn't have much water to hold to her name just yet- but Kaida was quite sure that this stunt of hers was going to put her on the map.[break][break]

A considerably eager crowd had already gathered around the table posted up out front of the Kashiwa Shrine, the sixteen-year-old Makoto waving and ringing a bell at anyone who dared to walk past her cave, acting like a salesman who had just discovered his newest stint in the business and frying all the big fish around him. Like she had struck gold. But the dragoness couldn't complain-advertising efforts in the past hadn't flown too high, but when cute fluffy foxes were involved, who had the heart to say no to actually ethically adopting a wild animal?[break][break]

"It's perfectly legal, ma'am," Makoto reassured the next activist who approached her with a fuming complexion, a sweet smile on her features. "you don't actually own the pet and care for it- it's still a wild animal in the reserve, it's just technically a pet under your name now! So if you do decide to adopt, please consider donating to help protect your pet from people who want to take their homes away!"[break][break]

Still suspicious, the woman looked down at Kaida's feet from where she was sat behind the table, signing off the forms that had just been handed in from the public, the dragoness herself glaring back. Or rather, at the creature that laid next to her. "And what about that one?"[break][break]

"Oh, Paki?" Makoto questioned, glancing down at the young red fox who yawned before burying his nose in his tail. "He's a rescue."[break][break]

Oh boy. Was Kaida going to have to explain for the umpteenth time about the poor thing's situation? Kaida didn't understand how he could sleep with all of these people around.

Oh, to be just like one of those foxes simply lazing about and napping under the sun... Well, she'd probably hate it to a certain extent given how poorly she and sunlight tends to mix, but what wouldn't she give to be as absent-minded and oblivious to the sorry state of affairs that goes on between humans.[break][break]

"You shouldn't be trying to feed it."[break][break]

The child stiffens under her gaze, gingerly retracting their hand from the fox that attempts to sniff the treat they hold. And for a moment, she does feel bad seeing the look of guilt they have on their face, very obviously mixed with confusion as they slip subtle gazes towards the creature.[break][break]

"It's not because we want to starve them...." She sighs, scratching the back of her neck as she kneels down to match the child's height. "Foxes get their energy from playing around with other special creatures of the forest. And they're really close friends that really enjoy each other's company. If you give it give it a treat, and other people also give it treats, it's gonna think that people are always going to give it food. Then it'll get really lazy, and it'll stop playing with their forest friends. And those little friends would get really lonely, don't you think?"[break][break]

It's an absolutely horrible lie she dares to spew, but this child is just about young enough to believe in such heartfelt tales. That and when she sees just how their face lights up, she really can't find it in her to explain the whole thing about foxes preying on other woodland critters. They smile so brightly, picking themselves up and bowing in thanks. And with one final wave, they'll be called away by their parents and run off with something that will stick with them for years to come.[break][break]

When you really think on it, what are other adults going to do? Correct the child who now believes in a world of wonder? Teach them to ignore signs of danger and keep attempting to feed wild animals? They should be glad that she's also helping to keep their kids away from catching any potential sicknesses from these foxes.

"A rescue?" The woman scoffed. "Surely he's just a wild animal that you've turned into a pet."[break][break]

Oh, the constants of misunderstandings. "Paki is actually a rescue from an illegal exotics trade, ma'am." Makoto replied. "He's never been a wild fox and was raised in captivity. Even if we were to release him, he wouldn't retain many basic hunting instincts, and would starve in a week." Makoto picked Paki up carefully, a hand under his chest and hindquarters. "He's better off here."[break][break]

The woman threw up her hands. "But wouldn't he be better off in a sanctuary of some sorts? He's not a domesticated—"[break][break]

"I've heard enough of this." Kaida suddenly spoke up, hand on her forehead as the other tapped on the table. "Paki is a rescue, and is now recognised as a domesticated pet. He's practically a dog, and would not be capable of living on his own in the wild. Is that clear?"[break][break]

The woman looked like she was about to speak up again, but upon seeing Kaida raise her head to glare at her with icy-cold eyes, she shrunk back with a huff, promptly leaving and muttering under her breath. The dragoness visibly relaxed, Makoto appearing like she was about to witness a battle, but also relaxing. She placed Paki on the table, out of the way of Kaida's documents. The crowd, now seeing that the dispute was over, lined up again. As Kaida signed a few more adoptions off, she overhead a nearby conversation with a peculiar looking woman and a young child.[break][break]

A fairytale. A lie. But as far as Kaida's concerned, it's necessary, both morally and in truth.[break][break]

"Why don't you take a break, Kaida?" Makoto suggested as the elder woman's gaze was diverted over her shoulder at the one with the child. [break][break]

"Fine. But if anyone tries to start something again, call me over." Kaida left to approach the lady, watching as the child trailed away happily. There's a moment of silence before she spoke up. "That was nice, what you did back there." Kaida said. "Too many people come about and try to feed these guys candy. It's like bread for pigeons." She rolled her eyes. "Zero nutritional value. Are you also here today to adopt a fox?"
