Kaida's head may as well have been a shield with how every single one of Jun's words bounced off her mind. Someone like her couldn't be convinced of purity with a few pretty rose-tinted words that didn't even dare dust off the surface of the old grave that she was— it would take years of unloading psychological trauma. Even then, it was unreasonable to think she could be 'fixed.' Fixed. What a laughable word. As if everything could be solved with a hug and belief in humanity. She would like to snap the necks of those who thought like that.[break][break]
She grimaced at herself knowing that her other half had delved into her thoughts again, glaring down at the rushing river before her, the turbulent water mirroring her miasmic tempest of a brain. "We are not the same." She glowered, pulling her fur cape from her shoulders, the crest of the Ikarashi Clan mocking her. "You are driven by the need to selflessly and tragically sustain others. Kaida wasted no time in placing her yari by the river bank and undressing, concerningly fast, tearing off the belts on her gauntlets and cuirass, leaving her upper body in her undershirt. It was obvious that she had absolutely no filter or care in the world for someone else seeing her au naturel, her fingers delving to the hem of her long-sleeved shirt as she glared at Jun, as if to say 'you did this to yourself.'

Kaida's resentful expression turned to one of exasperation as Jun gripped her gauntlet. Bathing was a luxury she couldn't afford, only a comfort she indulged in when infection dared raise its head through the blood she was doused in— otherwise, Kenzou's deathly phantom would taunt her, say that she was wasting her time, say that there were Clan soldiers out there that needed killing. And she agreed, by god, did she agree. Sango would know. Sango did not dare bring washcloths to her anymore, as the last time the kitsune did, Kaida had stared at her like she wanted to strangle her with it.[break][break]
"Why should I?" She seethed, ripping her hand away from Jun. "I can't afford to have you pamper me like you would groom a pet. Kaida couldn't stop staring as Chiharu beamed at her. It was like looking directly into the sun after she came up from the deep ocean for air— utterly blinding. For a girl who had shown no fear in the face of death, teeth bared and all, she was acting like it all had never happened, as though they were best of friends. It was... odd. Kaida wasn't entirely sure how to respond, so she only dipped her head, muttering a quiet "thank you".[break][break]
Chiharu was a kind and brave soul. Kaida loathed to think what might have happened to her had those poachers seen her in the wild; people were not kind in this world, no matter who you were, no matter where you came from. There's always someone that hates you.[break][break]
Yet... for Chiharu's sake, as Kaida felt the hand-woven blankets beneath her calloused fingertips, Kaida didn't want that to be the case. To be invited into a home as she was, was to be invited into a life. She wanted to know Chiharu better, but was it for the right reasons?[break][break]
Did she have the right to that? To insert herself into Chiharu's life, flaws, enemies and all, just to be selfish?[break][break]

Kaida looked at the ringmaster waving her over distastefully, in the middle of sipping on her frozen drink. Dream World wasn't something in her range of taste— she had simply tagged along a large group of students before ultimately abandoning them, not willing to put up with their loud voices and not-so-subtle stares. What they didn't know is that she was just there for the shaved ice and cold drinks, nothing more. She would be heading back to campus within the next few minutes.[break][break]
The ringmaster of the ring toss points at a large stuffed animal holed up at the top of his stall, the red and yellow livery blinding in the dim sunset light. "Come on, it's only a couple tickets for five rings! Give me your best shot!"[break][break]
Kaida stared at the dragon stuffie. It stared back.[break][break]

If anything, it was good for hand-to-eye coordination training. Kaida paid silently, staring down at the rings the ringmaster gave her.[break][break]

I'm far worse a threat than a measly "hero student", Kaida thought, offended that anyone would think of that as her title. [break][break]
Kaida's tail hardened with ice to whip forth and block the knives flung at her, sharpened weapons bouncing harmlessly off her fur as she raced forth with her jaws unhinged as though she were about to swallow Daiki whole. But it was a mere distraction for her tail that swung behind herself and over her own shoulder like a scorpion, aiming to spike Kazashi's brother like a fish on a pike— unlike the heroes who tittered in the stagelight, Kaida would willingly go for lethal violence first rather than restraining. Yes, an appropriate method for someone like him.[break][break]

Upon hearing those words, Kaida's heart seized. She didn't bother to look at the manilla folder, not-so-subtly glancing around the room for anyone who could be listening in, anyone who was waiting for them to slip up.[break][break]

He grunted with the weight of exertion, glancing back at Kei. "Good call, young man!" Kenzou said. "I didn't sense any of them." Looking back down the tunnel, the hero tightened his grip. "But it means we're going the right way. There will likely be—"[break][break] More of them.[break][break] Bright white arcs of light thundered towards them at unfathomable speeds. Kenzou dodged the first arc of lightning, only to be tackled through the wall behind them by a blur of a figure, who rolled into his lunge, immediately on his feet. Kenzou whipped around to look for his odachi, seeing it laying a body-length away from him— his first instinct was to grab it, but he knew that would be a mistake for his opponent wasn't any ordinary quirk user. It sickened him to his stomach, seeing this man again. Waves rocked under his feet as he remembered.[break][break] Katsuro Ikarashi. His white and black hair was a pale gold underneath the lantern light of the dojo they had landed in, tattoo on his entire right arm and chest on display, all the while glaring Kenzou down threateningly.[break][break] "It's been a while, hero," Katsuro said scathingly. "Glad to see you're out of your bed. Of course a little coma wouldn't put down someone like you. Still," Katsuro got into a fighting stance, raising his open palms. "I think you should give your futon another visit."[break][break] Kenzou sighed out his nose, gritting his teeth, weighing his options. He did not want to send Kei on alone, but with Kaida nowhere in sight, he was left with only his team to guide the student. Every second meant time. Losing time meant losing Koharu. Kenzou tightened his fists, crescents digging into his palms. There wasn't another choice. "Young Hada, I must command you to follow the leadings of my team and continue on without me." Katsuro did nothing as he retrieved his sword. "But do not worry. This..." Kenzou got into his own stance. "will only take a moment."[break][break] "Ha." Katsuro scoffed. "That's what they all say."[break][break] The next moments were terribly silent and long as they both thought out their plans of approach, only noticing the rumbling ceiling which shook rubble onto them seconds too late. The sky exploded as the dojo caved in, a familiar dragon's roar screeching out as Katsuro screamed before they were enveloped. Kenzou dodged backwards and peered through the dust with a cough as Kaida landed beside him, exploding from the debris. Go, her expression said as she opened her jaw, readying her ice. I will deal with this.[break][break] Kenzou nodded without hesitation, running back to Kei and with a quick gesture, diving into the tunnel. This wasn't something he had any qualms with. It was a blood feud— getting in the way of the Ikarashi while they were having a spat meant all of their dooms. As Zipper continued to fumble, Kaida was vaguely reminded of an avalanche. Zipper seemed to be snowballing down one.[break][break]
It’s not something she’s had happen to her before, and she’s not naive to think it will ever happen again. She’s not that lucky. Or maybe she is, and she’s found one of those rare fangirls that are obsessed with serial killers and villains- it’s a very real possibility.
