She kept her position on top, due thanks to Cool's influence, rearing back one of her hands to punch through the paint and alloy below her, metal digging into her skin as she reached down and pulled the man inside out by his collar. His scream of terror reminded her of an adult taking away a child's lollipop— utterly, utterly sad, and one that made Kaida frown. Looking up at Cool's van, Kaida reached for her earpiece — but not after knocking him unconscious with a well-placed slap to his airway — and shouted at Gabriel. "Oi, you've got someone coming your way."[break][break]
Unceremoniously, she threw him at the open doors of the van in front of her, hoping that Gabriel had the sense to catch him, and moved on with her assault.

Kaida continued writing about her sister, the young little girl who she had no idea of her looks nor personality, before eventually moving on to something random she had noticed about Yogi, her mentor's great pyrenees and his love of peanut butter. All random events and random things that ultimately had no meaning. That's what you were supposed to do with journals, right? Document everything, no matter how small? Surely it would come into use eventually.[break][break]
The blackbird in front of her, after a few more moments of struggle, finally pulled the worm out of the ground with a happy hop of its feet, before flying up into the canopy of leaves, landing on the branch of which Hikari's halo piece was situated in. It gobbled up the worm in one gulp, before turning to the object curiously, beady black eyes boring into what would be Hikari's. It hopped closer, once, twice, thrice, mystified with the shiny item and pecked at it. Once, twice, thrice. Whatever Hikari did in response would be met by squawking and a flurry of feathers, Kaida finally looking up at the tree, and closing her journal.[break][break]
Any other person would have shrugged and gone about their day— but Kaida, hard-trained to be a soldier and possibly one of the most paranoid people on campus, stood up and approached the tree, laying a hand on the bark. Then she raised a combat-boot clad foot... and kicked the tree. Hard. Not enough to splinter it in half, but with force to make whatever might be loose in the branches fall.

Anything the girl said barely registered in her mind, and as she kept talking, it vaguely reminded Kaida of tinkling windchimes in a gentle spring breeze, wait, why did she think that? Her grip was still steel-strong on the windowsill, the feeling of fire on her cheeks still present as she struggled to turn around and lower herself from that position of near-jumping to make eye contact. A fever? Maybe she did, if this is what a fever felt like. She's never felt this hot before.[break][break]
Kaida stuttered a thank you as the girl, who named herself Chiharu, handed her the cloth. She didn't make any move to use it, however.[break][break]
Only then did she take in her surroundings. A homely place, smelling faintly of well-worn wood, leather, and other rustic smells she would have recognised back in her old "home", the Ikarashi Estate. Traditional. Kaida had never liked the appeal of modern homes— one like this was a welcome change of pace, despite its unfamiliarity. Everything seemed... handmade. Did she do all of this? "Kaida Ikarashi," she introduced herself, her tone was considerably more evened out, but still cracked with nervousness. She blinked, icy-amber eyes glazed over. "where... is this? Those people who attacked you, where are they?" She looked up sharply. "Were you followed?"

Kaida followed Jun's lead up until the front door burst open, stopping and watching the interaction between her and the family member unfold. Whatever was happening here wasn't her place to intervene, although the senior did eye the sandal in the woman's hands warily. Who's to know what she could do with that thing?[break][break]
When attention was brought to her, Kaida immediately bowed at a decent angle, ever the traditionalist. "Kaida Ikarashi. Nice to meet you, please take care of me."[break][break]
She followed into the house last, still not entirely certain of her surroundings and the unfamiliar people she didn't know much about— as antisocial as she was, it would take time to get used to them, no matter how friendly they seemed. Many hands make light work, her sister had once said. Kaida had tried her hardest to strongarm her way through her clan, but she was slowly starting to come to the realisation that most likely all of it would come to naught if she had no one to back her up. The first and main reason why she had ever done anything solely by herself and only herself was because she didn't want to hurt anyone who might have cared about her. But Jun's insistence was getting to her, as well as the hot breath of the law and media down her spine— not to mention those unreadable stares Kenzou gave her when he thought she wasn't looking.[break][break]
"Not like you'd be going anywhere with your roundabout train of thought and stubbornness," Kaida joked, poking at Jun's temple playfully, before abruptly stopping. That was unlike her. "...Sorry."[break][break]
Where did that come from?[break][break]
Kenzou quietly watched from the front passenger seat with his arms crossed, still smiling, although his grin seemed to soften into a more genuine smile at that moment. If anything stood out in this small moment in time, it was the glances that kept being thrown Kenzou's way. It's not every day one of Tokyo's top heroes hops into your taxi, after all.[break][break]
They swiftly arrive at Ouros Investigative and Hero Agency. To Kaida's surprise, it's not anything like the modern buildings and towers agencies are usually placed in, like Kenzou's Perihelion Agency. The ocean had glittered in the distance before they arrived at the traditional Japanese villa, Kaida nodding appreciatively at the sight. Given the estate she was brought up in, she much preferred old rustic style to sterile white tiles.[break][break]
To Kaida's dismay, Kenzou walked straight up to the front door and knocked on it. Loudly. And shouted. Loudly. "Miss Pavlina! Your students have arrived!"[break][break]
Reflexively, Kaida put both hands on her flattened ears, embarrassed. Being with him in public was one thing, but in front of her own teacher? She didn't know how to react to that.

It might fall out during the fight due to the inhuman shape of her ears, which had been flattened ever so slightly in indignance ever since Gabriel had found her. It didn't matter. That just meant she didn't have to listen to his voice.[break][break]
The senior looked over Gaberiel's shoulder at the map wordlessly, taking note of every nook and cranny she could possibly use to her advantage. She was going into this bare-handed, after all. She had a few tricks up her sleeve.[break][break]
"No time to waste." She chipped in, moving to the van's double doors at the end of the vehicle, promptly throwing them open. Wind thrashed her hair around in disarray as she looked over her shoulder at the pair of misfits. "Slow them down if you can. I'll try and take over the wheel." And without further ado, she leapt.[break][break]
It was a rough landing— with the speed they were going at, a vicious snarl appeared on Kaida's face as she crashed into the car's hood, whipping her head up to glare at the perpetrators. Kaida found haste in jumping over the windshield before the people inside could possibly start shooting her— with the way they were trapped, no way out in sight, they would likely resort to drastic methods. With a huff she landed on the roof, edging carefully to the passenger's side. They would need to be taken out first.

In ancient wartimes, there was often debate on how correctly tactics were used to ambush enemies. An army could find solace in the night, moving unseen and using the new moon's dismal light to their advantage. Whereas others could brazenly attack in broad daylight, using surprise to kill dozing enemies. But there was never any stealth in it. Not in the sun— not until Kaida reflected on her memories, thinking of what tactics her family would use against their opponents.[break][break]

It's a simple fact. Whoever has the high ground has the advantage. Whoever has the high ground can see all of their enemies. But there's no higher ground than the air itself. [break][break]
Wind ripped and roared at Kaida's mane and feathers as she soared through the clouds, the sun beating down on her back like she was a lizard dehydrating under a too-hot heat lamp— but it's a small price to pay for the advantage the sun gave her. It's pure irony, she thought. The sun is the one thing most lifeforms look up to and enjoy, and here she is, hiding in its shadow. Kaida's thoughts flash back to the meeting.[break][break]

Kaida dove, folding her wings. Beneath her, Takamagahara. Behind her, the sun, the brightest light known to man, an object that no one could look at for too long, a perfect spot to hide in— a blindspot that no one could find her. Upon Takamagahara's halls she knew there were turrets hidden beneath— but none of them rise from their positions to fire at her, in time, that is. [break][break]
Stray leaves brushed against her wingtips as she leveled out, wind buffeting against her feathers as the telltale metallic thrung of the turrets rung throughout the air, robotically rising from their graves to aim at her. But it's already too late with the ice surging from her throat and through her teeth as Kaida soared past at blinding speeds, obliterating the weapons lining the wall, explosions thundering through the atmosphere as the dragoness destroyed them in one fell swoop. Small glaciers lined the top of the wall as fiery ash burst upwards, signifying that she had succeeded. Kaida roared out as she turned, seeing the rest of the turrets from the east and west wall emerge and turn to aim at her.[break][break]

At the sound, Kenzou perked up, looking behind him, then at Kei. "That's it! Everyone move, move! Go!"[break][break]
Footsteps thundered through the forest as the army encroached on the castle. The raid had begun.

Kaida listened and was joined by a headache that steadily increased from knocking on her door to absolutely battering it with its fists. She wasn't sure of where today was headed, but she was sure that sooner or later her patience with Gabriel and... mister Cool was going to run thin eventually. Seriously, what kind of a name was that? And why did Gabriel seem so interested in trying to stop these people? If anything, he should have been more involved as a journalist in the aftermath.[break][break]
She stared incredulously as Gabriel addressed her again. Hints about her identity and usage of her quirk were gossiped about, but often misinterpreted— though he had pinpointed getting her "dragon under control" as though he had known about the more sinister depths of her quirk. [break][break]

"You misunderstand." Kaida said, her stare evolving into a glare. "The emitter trait of my quirk can only be used when transformed. Anything Gabriel said most likely went in one ear and out the other. She could hardly register any of what he was saying, making her think she had somehow acquired an invisible shield that deflected all of Gabriel's Bullshit™. Today is sunny. Therefore, Kaida's doing her best to avoid said celestial object.[break][break]
She got some looks for pointedly avoiding the sunlight dappled walkways and sticking vicariously to the sides of the campus buildings. After the lecturer let them go, the other fourth-years ignored Kaida's predicament, but the other students in years below gave her quizzical stares and some poorly hidden giggles behind hands gingerly placed on their lips. Gossip is commonplace and hurtful in UAU, but it's commonplace to Kaida, as well— it bounced off her ears like light to sheer white snow. It used to bother her, and got in her weeks worth of detention. But not anymore.[break][break]
The senior sat down on a bench overlooking a rise of hills, where a few people sat beneath a tree a ways away, and ultimately gave her no notice. The building behind her gave her enough shade to hide away in, and she took a moment to watch a blackbird struggle with a worm being picked from the muddy grasses. With a sigh she started to reorganise her notes from that day's class, rubbing at the bags under her eyes. Life as a senior demanded less sleep from the little she already got in the first place.[break][break]
With a grumble under her breath, she pulled out her journal.[break][break]
It's not worn. She bought it last month and had intended on keeping a record of all the events she had gone through in the past year for future reference, should something damning ever come up. Mikurajima, Tokushima, and most recently and to come, Takamagahara. She started where she left off.[break][break]
I find myself frequently thinking of her, and how she is doing. I hope she is well, safe, and unharmed, despite the position she is in. We have never met, but, for some reason, I care for her more than I have for anyone else. Kaida stopped, the ink of her pen bleeding into the pages. Why is that?

That node of thought made her think about her clan's own origins. As with Jun's father's side of the family, there were no records of any Ikarashi Clan— purely because they were a clan formed from the yakuza rather than ones of noble origins.
