Today is sunny. Therefore, Kaida's doing her best to avoid said celestial object.[break][break]

She got some looks for pointedly avoiding the sunlight dappled walkways and sticking vicariously to the sides of the campus buildings. After the lecturer let them go, the other fourth-years ignored Kaida's predicament, but the other students in years below gave her quizzical stares and some poorly hidden giggles behind hands gingerly placed on their lips. Gossip is commonplace and hurtful in UAU, but it's commonplace to Kaida, as well— it bounced off her ears like light to sheer white snow. It used to bother her, and got in her weeks worth of detention. But not anymore.[break][break]

The senior sat down on a bench overlooking a rise of hills, where a few people sat beneath a tree a ways away, and ultimately gave her no notice. The building behind her gave her enough shade to hide away in, and she took a moment to watch a blackbird struggle with a worm being picked from the muddy grasses. With a sigh she started to reorganise her notes from that day's class, rubbing at the bags under her eyes. Life as a senior demanded less sleep from the little she already got in the first place.[break][break]

With a grumble under her breath, she pulled out her journal.[break][break]

It's not worn. She bought it last month and had intended on keeping a record of all the events she had gone through in the past year for future reference, should something damning ever come up. Mikurajima, Tokushima, and most recently and to come, Takamagahara. She started where she left off.[break][break]

I find myself frequently thinking of her, and how she is doing. I hope she is well, safe, and unharmed, despite the position she is in. We have never met, but, for some reason, I care for her more than I have for anyone else. Kaida stopped, the ink of her pen bleeding into the pages. Why is that?

kaida might as well be the vampire to hikari's angel—where the other girl bleeds into the darkness, the redhead seraph thrives in the sunlight. she's laid out on a pool bed, tanning oil slathered across her scantily clad body, and dressed only in a skimpy bikini, the ideal outfit for both showing off and getting the perfect tan line. it's days like these, sunny and without a cloud in the sky, that hikari prefers to dedicate to her hobbies—tanning and eavesdropping, the perfect activities for a girlboss in training. unfortunately for kaida, she already made herself a target. it's just math—when hikari sees a weirdo sequestered away beneath treeshade, and though she will laugh and giggle and point in the moment, she will also make a mental note to revisit them when she has time. gossip is the name of the game, afterall, when it comes to being the most popular and powerful bitch in school, and hikari genuinely doesn't give a shit if it's "rude" or an "invansion of privacy". if kaida didn't want her diary to be read, she should have just, like, thought about it or something. who knows. hikari certainly doesn't.[break][break]

what she DOES know, however, is that there's gotta be something real juicy in that book. that's why, while hikari sips on an iced coffee from the local cafe in an isolated and quiet area of the school's rooftop pool, she gently instructs all pieces of her halo to spread across campus and embed themselves in areas where they're unlikely to be found out. while usually any request of her halo would end up in an argument, this is one activity all of the shards can agree on. for some reason, every personality therein really loves gossip—hikari can't really blame them, though. it's like a really engaging novel for a girlboss who really hates to read.[break][break]

the only shard she really cares about is the one going to the tree she saw kaida beneath. it's a short distance from the pool to the tree, and it only takes a moment or two for the glimmering, scintillating halo shard to fly across campus and come to a standstill far above where kaida is sitting. from there, it gently floats down into the tree cover, where it eventually embeds into a branch directly above the quiet fourth-year's head, only tangentially obscured by leaf cover. unfortunately, with the force it uses to pierce the tree, it jostles the branch just enough to shake down a few leaves, which drift gently on the wind down towards the grass underfoot.[break][break]

hikari cringes as she wordlessly tunes into the shard, allowing her eyes to peer through it's point of view. yiiiiikes. hope she thinks that's just a bird or somethin...

Kaida continued writing about her sister, the young little girl who she had no idea of her looks nor personality, before eventually moving on to something random she had noticed about Yogi, her mentor's great pyrenees and his love of peanut butter. All random events and random things that ultimately had no meaning. That's what you were supposed to do with journals, right? Document everything, no matter how small? Surely it would come into use eventually.[break][break]

The blackbird in front of her, after a few more moments of struggle, finally pulled the worm out of the ground with a happy hop of its feet, before flying up into the canopy of leaves, landing on the branch of which Hikari's halo piece was situated in. It gobbled up the worm in one gulp, before turning to the object curiously, beady black eyes boring into what would be Hikari's. It hopped closer, once, twice, thrice, mystified with the shiny item and pecked at it. Once, twice, thrice. Whatever Hikari did in response would be met by squawking and a flurry of feathers, Kaida finally looking up at the tree, and closing her journal.[break][break]

Any other person would have shrugged and gone about their day— but Kaida, hard-trained to be a soldier and possibly one of the most paranoid people on campus, stood up and approached the tree, laying a hand on the bark. Then she raised a combat-boot clad foot... and kicked the tree. Hard. Not enough to splinter it in half, but with force to make whatever might be loose in the branches fall.

a fishbowl perspective reveals the object of hikari's desire—kaida's journal, albeit a bit too blurry for hikari to make out the exact text of, given her shard's distance from the ground. seconds after the shard has settled itself in the tree's branches, right around when hikari gets half the mind to order the shard to reposition itself a bit further down the canopy and a bit closer to the ground, hikari watches with trepidation as a robin, worm-in-beak, soars up to the very same branch to peer at the shard occupying a space a few inches from it. the robin swallows the worm, and then hops closer and closer to the shard. hikari curses to herself in her head.[break][break]

goddamnit. can you, like, get outta the way?[break][break]

the bird doesn't give a shit. in fact, it peers closer and closer, until it's beak is mere centimeters away from the errant shard of hikari's halo. a pregnant pause passes, and then the bird very suddenly pecks at the shard, and pulsations of acute psychic pain rapidly pass through hikari's body. fuuuuuuck, that hurts, she mentally cries to herself as she physically winces and recoils where she sits across campus, cradling her head. a few students certainly give her strange looks in response. of course, the situation only gets worse when, without hikari even noticing, kaida kicks the tree hard enough to completely dislodge the shard from it's seat in the canopy. more pain ripples through hikari's head in response, but that hardly touches on the fury that further characterizes her thoughts as the shard falls to the grass in front of kaida, prismatic in color, a kaleidoscope erupting from its surface everytime the sunlight briefly catches its jagged faces. hikari continues to watch from it, but she rapidly and blindly picks herself up from her tanning chair in the process.[break][break]

it's an empty threat. hikari knows just as well as the shards of her halo that breaking any shard is extremely painful for both her and the shard, and it's not quite the outcome either of them want, but it's enough to get the damn thing to just SHUT UP. hikari flicks away the telepathic conversation by gently shaking her head back and forth, but the headache remains from the pecking incident, reverberating through her upper body and sinuses like dissipating waves of water. she raises a hand to gently pressing on her temples in hopes to allow the pressure to relieve itself, and though it works for a second, it only returns as soon as her hands leave when she finds herself approached by someone.[break][break]

black hair, citrine eyes... oh god, it's the girl hikari was spying on. to confirm, hikari locks her eyes with the shard held in kaida's hands, and her expression quickly sours. with a roll of her eyes, hikari attempts to control the shard and wrest it away from kaida's hands to return it to it's rightful place atop her head, and in the process, the buxom redhead rises to her feet and crosses her arms while popping her hip out.[break][break]

"am i okay?" she hisses, eyes narrowed and brows furrowed as she stares up at the taller girl. "uh, no! do you like make it a habit to randomly go picking up other people's things? or are you just like stupid or something???"[break][break]

there's a lot of unwanted aggression for someone who was very obviously in the wrong, but anybody whose seen hikari would immediately clock her as a girl who feels entitled to her own fury in every situation.

Usually they appear in gaggles of three or four with pumpkin spice lattes and lipstick so toxic she's surprised they're not inhaling poisonous fumes, but this one is alone, with no one else to back her probably botox'd ass up. As a subject of their gossip, Kaida ultimately wanted nothing to do with them. But here she is.[break][break]

The dragoness lets the crystal go with no fuss, blankly looking at the girl. Kaida already looked like she wanted to get on the nearest spaceship and make it for Mars to start a new life. this girl is remarkably phlegmatic and boring, the exact type of outcast hikari would have an absolute field day with. unique to kaida though, was some actual teeth, which hikari wasn't quite used to dealing with given these types of girls. hell, even though jun literally threw hikari off of a chair, she offered to patch hikari up shortly thereafter. it seemed social ostracism didn't dull the shine of this girl's knife, which ultimately makes an exchange of words much more exciting than usual. just like a smarmy politician, hikari would delight in running speech circles around this rando.[break][break]

"soooo i guess i was right on the mark with you being stupid, given that you don't seem to know what tanning oil is," hikari jabs, recovering from mental anguish just in time to leverage a toxic grin on her face. "oh, or you're just acting like you don't so that you can make a half-assed insult at a girl who couldn't give half of a shit about you! was making yourself look like an idiot worth it, or do you wanna try again?"[break][break]

to hikari, it's surprising that this is even happening given how benign the other girl seems. regardless, the idea to keep jabbing at her with ruthless words ossifies into hikari's head shortly thereafter as she leans back on her hips and curls her arms across her chest just beneath her bust. if she can't spy and gossip, the next best thing is to bully!
