“What does a student counselor have to do with my bow anyways…?” May wondered to herself as she walked along the halls of UAU towards it’s training grounds. She’d made an appointment with the student counselor, detailing a few of her feelings on the sheet she’d like to address and the response she’d gotten was a time, a place and was told to bring her equipment and athletic clothing. It was curious invitation but then again, it was a hero school. So she’d just roll with it.

May was dressed in some of her practice clothes today. She wore a fitted, long-sleeved white performance shirt crafted from lightweight fabric designed to wick away moisture. One sleeve was long, running right up to her wrist while the other was short allowing her to wear a long earthy brown-black glove that ended at her elbow. All the fingers were uncovered except two which allowed her tactile sensitivity while maintaining a good grip on her bowstring. Her non-dominant arm has a leather arm guard, designed to protect her from the snap of the bowstring when it’s released.

Her pants are a combination of function and style. Flexible and skintight leggings in a rich brown hue, they’re reinforced at the knee’s and hips offering minor protection when crouching or kneeling. The deep pockets on the thighs hold her phone as well as a few small tools for on-the-go bow maintenance. A wide brown leather belt is cinched around her waist to add a tasteful touch of rugged elegance to the outfit which has a small pouch attached which at the moment is currently full of sour-apple candies.

Her hair, tugged up into a lazy ponytail and her face clean of any makeup except for the fluttery coat of mascara on her lashes. She looks confident in the way she walks. Over her shoulder was a sleek recurve bow made from a combination of wood and metallic components. The body of the bow is hand-carved with dozens of nature-inspired designs, a project she’d been working on over time.

It’s not such a long walk before she makes it to the training grounds, stretching a little bit as she arrives and looking around for this counselor she was supposed to meet. With her luck it was one of their teachers about to toss her around like a ragdoll and show her the meaning of feeling useless in combat, something she had kind of felt lately. She was a one-trick-pony in a lot of regards and it was starting to weigh on her compared to her classmates with quirks that could do so much more.

“Hello?” She called out, looking around with those multi-faceted eyes.

[Sadako Gotoh]

May Twenty-First was a curious case even for a UAU student. She wasn’t denying her the opportunity for a normal counselling session, May was absolutely going to get that too. However, part of looking after a student’s mental well being also involved assessing their physical health. In short, she wanted to see how May moved. She was a weapon user just like many of the other students in her care, Freja was another one that came to mind. Weapon users were faced with the unique weakness of being prone to getting disarmed, meaning they didn’t just need to be fast and strong, they needed to know how to protect their weapon too.

That was exactly why Sadako had called her outside, the talk of their session today would be less formal, but she was always up for lending an ear to May’s troubles and anxieties.

Sadako was dressed business casual as usual. It was her work uniform and she was at work after all. “Welcome, May. I’m glad you could make it.” She smiled with her arms behind her back. “How are you feeling? Has our school been treating you okay?” She has shown up dressed for the occasion which was a relief. Some students inevitably got confused when their counsellor request they meet at the training grounds. “You’re probably wondering why I’ve called you out here. The truth is, I want to test your skills a little bit. We’re gonna play a game of keep away.” She grinned, “it’s simple, you have to keep ahold of your bow and I will try to take it from you. Afterwards, we can talk about anything you want to. I figured since the weather is so nice today, we could do it out here?”

May stretched a little bit upon her approach. Part of her wondered about the approach of this ‘session’, but then…she was attending UAU. Pretty much anything was game in this place. The other night a teacher had kicked down her door and had her react like a hero might if someone broke into their room at night. It had been a bit of a shock to the system, moreso because it was her damn uncle.

May moved up to Sadako and dipped into a polite and perhaps overly formal bow, “Hello Miss uhm…” She paused for a second, wrinkling her nose. She’d always been terrible with names.

“…Sadako?” She said, almost cautiously.

May adjusted the bow hanging over her shoulder and furrowed her brows slightly, “Hm. I mean, I’m feeling ok. The school has been a bit of a shock to the system, that’s for sure. But I think given time it will treat me better.” She chuckled a little bit. Of course she didn’t mention that she was lagging so far behind all of her classmates in everything hero related. Her quirk really didn’t compare to theirs at this point in time. She was essentially, an archer with fancy arrows.

She nodded in response to WHY she was out here. May reached up again, flicking the bowstring gently, “Keep away huh?” She tilted her head a little bit. It seemed an odd test coming from a counselor, but May was down to clown so long as it provided some sort of active benefit.

She tugged her bow gently from her shoulder, grasping it in her left hand and nodded, “Out seems as good a place as any.” She eyed the woman curiously but was smiling regardless.

“Cmon then. Let’s dance, I’ve got all the time in the world.” She said with a hint of confidence. Of course, she wasn’t confident. The only upper hand she might have would be her gymnastics training but that was basics currently at best. May hadn’t been expected to get a workout today, but perhaps this would work up a sweat and KO her this evening.

''Yeah. Sadako, or Gleipnir, whichever you prefer.'' She smiled, having all of May's best interests at heart she only wanted to see her succeed, as she did with all the other students. She returned the bow. ''Don't worry, there's no need to be formal with me.'' She rather wanted to strike a balance between being an educator, but also a friend. Since she wasn't a teacher like many of her colleagues, she was in a unique position, and being that she was a counselor, establishing friendly, yet professional relations with the students was key.

''I admire your optimism.'' She put her hands together softly. ''It goes a long way in this career path.'' May might not know it, but the ability to bear the shocking, or the surprising, or maybe even downright bad, and then turning it into something better was not something just anyone could do. It required practice, but above all else a strong will. ''That's right. Keep away.'' When she separated her palms again, a chain started to emerge from one of them, a chain which she gripped tight in one hand and began swinging around like a lasso.

''You're full of energy, aren't you?'' She couldn't hold back a giggle. ''Then, here I come!'' Throwing the chain forward, Sadako started out with a simple attack just to test May's reflexes. Aiming the chain up near the top of her shoulder, she tried to snatch the bow from a position that would be quite easy to dodge or defend against.
