[attr="class","shinigami"] On the case! Grant’s feet traveled on unfamiliar terrain, though that wasn’t anything new. Since he came to Japan a few months prior, he’d felt like a fish out of water. Why he’d chosen the island nation was beyond him- he just knew that he couldn’t stay in his home town. It had nothing to do with destiny or a burgeoning quirk scene. Aurora just… never felt quite right. He didn’t belong there, and after an awkward retirement from the precinct, he needed somewhere new, somewhere fresh. Tokyo, however, had been a daunting move. Going from a town of a little over a few thousand to a massive metropolis with millions had left his head reeling. Sure it meant there was plenty of work, even for his small firm, but it also meant that just going outside made his head dizzy. So many people, so much noise. Today, the crowds had defeated him. He retreated into a small little tea shop, a sign overhead reading ‘The Bovine’. Unlike the rest of the city, it was relatively quiet, with only a few patrons silently enjoying their tea while they read or browsed the internet. Grant let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding in. Soft music soothed his headache as he took a seat at the bar. ”Excuse me, could I please get a small cup of matcha?” he asked, his voice a gravelly baritone. Damian himself hadn’t been in japan for the longest and honestly? He felt like he should have come here years ago. It had the ambience he liked, it had the culture he enjoyed and the people around him were nothing but kind. Sure there were a lot of villain activities and plenty of fighting but that seemed so far removed here. The gentle music that played over his head was interrupted by the bell letting him know that someone entered his shop.
His smile widened and the owner of the bovine glided over to the spot that the somewhat exhausted looking fellow took a seat at. Or maybe it was just that he seemed exhausted to damian; he could actually be full of energy but just had one of those faces that made them seem tired. Long work nights maybe? The gravelly baritone earned a small earflick and he’d nod.
”Of course sir! One Small cup of matcha coming right up~”
The owner of the bovine’s tail flicked and he’d place down a menu just in case the fellow would like to check more drinks or food if he was thirsty for more or hungry. Damian himself worked like he had been preparing this kind of drink for his entire life. Humming softly to himself and his ears flicking this way or that as the few other people in his shop spoke to one another in hushed voices.
More so to see if anyone needed anything; did he have a heightened sense of hearing or was this just practice? Hard to really know without asking. The humming came to a standstill when the drink was placed in front of Grant.
”Is there anything else I can get you sir?”
His voice was gentle, soothing, something that you’d expect from someone that had lived their life in nothing but safety. But the sort of person that liked being there for others. Like this was his chosen profession and he was happy.

[attr="class","shinigami"] On the case! Grant was grateful for the menu since he was, in fact, in the market for a little treat. The Japanese word for ‘pastry’ had eluded him, but with the menu he was easily able to point to the strawberry danish. Even though the prejudice in Japan hadn’t been nearly as bad as back home in Indiana, Grant felt relieved to see whoever was running the counter was a mutant as well. Like there was a mutually understood experience between the two of them, even if they never broached the topic. “Don’t think I’ll ever get used to the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.” He chuckled, pushing a lock of hair from his eye. ”I’m from overseas.” He felt the strange need to clarify. ”A small town in a flyover state, to be more specific. This place feels familiar. Comfortable, even. Like a little slice of home.” He took a sip of his tea. He could feel his body finally starting to relax. ”Are you the owner?” [attr="class","mizocredit"] [newclass=.mizocredit a]font:bold 6pt calibri;letter-spacing:1px;color:#b5d1f1;[/newclass] [newclass=.shinigami]width:540px;padding:35px; border:1px solid #e1e1e1; background: #e1f79d; /* Old breakowsers */ background: -moz-linear-gradient(-45deg, #343c52 0%, #6f667b 100%); /* FF3.6-15 */background: -webkit-linear-gradient(-45deg, #343c52 0%,#6f667b 100%); /* Chrome10-25,Safari5.1-6 */background: linear-gradient(120deg, #343c52 20%,#6f667b 80%)[/newclass]

Another earflick and his eyes would go to where the other was pointing out the strawberry danish. If he wasn’t wrong there had been a batch that had just come out of the oven. Practically gliding over to the kitchen he’d quickly come back with the requested pastry. Things here ran like a smooth machine and there was very little that damian couldn’t get people immediately if things permitted.
”Tell me about it, sometimes it’s busier here than anywhere else I’ve been.”
It was certainly no france and there were hardly any of the cities save maybe new york that could quite compare to the mega city that was Tokyo. Hearing that the other was from overseas he’d give a genuine smile to Grant.
”You’re not the only one sir, I’m from america originally myself. Texas.”
The last part seemed oddly sympathetic as though he understood what they meant and hearing that this place was both familiar and comfortable… and then a slice of home? Well he’d beam brightly and lean on the bar counter, a little off to the side so as not to lean over the other’s plate and drink.
”I’m glad you feel that way. I am! My name is Damian. I’m sometimes bad at introductions but food and drink is often why people come here so introductions come whenever folks seem ready to talk.”
He’d motion with one hand to an empty table for a couple that had come on in, they were regulars that just came here to order water and use his wifi for a few hours. They’d ask if they wanted anything else more complex and he’d definitely get them when they were ready.
”Been here for a little while then?”
He’d ask with a quizzicall head tilt, he couldn’t recall seeing this particular mutant around before but… It was also possible he wasn’t entirely paying attention.

[attr="class","shinigami"] On the case! ”I thought you might be. Your hospitality is certainly reminiscent of the South.”Truthfully, Grant had spent very little time in the southern part of the United States, but ‘Southern Hospitality’ was common parlance. He was willing to feign being more knowledgeable on the matter than he was for the sake of relatability. A mutant and a fellow American? Grant hadn’t been privileged enough to meet anyone so similar to himself since he’d arrived here. ”Grant.” He offered in kind, snapping himself of his stupor. It was easy to get lost in his head sometimes, overthinking every little thing. Perhaps that was the price of having a brain wired for solving mysteries. ”Well, this is a tea shop, correct? Unless you’re offering anything else on the side, that feels like a given.” He chuckled. Grant took a sip from his matcha before answering. ”Been in Tokyo for a few months now, but I’m not great with crowds. I haven’t explored the city as much as I ought to.” Hell, he’d only ducked in here to get away from the crowds. ”This place is nice, though. Homey. As long as you don’t blow up in one of those hidden gem magazines, I think this may be my new go-to.”Grant let the silence linger for a moment, his anxious energy washed away with the tea. The ambience was nice…quiet. The way he liked things. ”So what brings a Texan down to Tokyo?” Grant finally breached the silence, collected enough to continue conversation.
