He had no idea why they were constantly matched up with Freja but at this point he didn't really care to ask. She was a cool kid and a good hero and for the most part he could get her to do most of the work if the need arose. The way she reacted to compliments and jokes also made it easier to pass the time. She was dorky and awkward like a little fawn with a baseball bat you did not want to fuck with. It was for that reason that he felt the need make sure no one fucked with her and that reason alone. No other reason. Stop looking into this now.

"So, knife man, thunder monk and burning building" Zenkai spoke, right before shoving a whole fistful of popcorn into his mouth. "Everytime I'm with you something weird always seems to happen. It's kind of like the world itself is telling me to stay away from you" The golden boi teased. While it was meant to be a joke, there was some truth to the statement. The two of them had been through quite a bit of shit together, most if it was life threatening. It probably would have been scary if it wasn't exactly the kind of stuff they signed up to handle. Still those were the kinds of situations where the protagonists in all the manga would fall in love with the girl, but that was bullshit right? That stuff didn't actually happen in real life. "Too bad I'm a shit listener"

Their patrol today was In a quiet neighborhood, away from the usual hustle and bustle of Tokyo. If Zen was a betting man he would have put his money on U.A. finally realizing trouble followed the pair and put them in a quiet district to keep them out of any shenanigans. Whether or not the universities tactics would plan out was anyone's guess, but the monkey king had a feeling shit was coming for them

She truly had no idea why she was paired up with Zenkai either. In terms of getting into trouble, the two of them had to be one of, if not THE most cursed duo from school. Maybe the school just hadn’t noticed or they didn’t care. She was all for risking her life as a hero, that’s what the job was all about after all. However, her and Zen were just barely first year students. There was no way anything could have prepared her for this level of danger! Not even running with a street gang.

“Yeah.” She looked up at them as they shoved popcorn in their mouth. They really liked to snack, but she couldn’t blame them. If she was built like them she would probably need a lot more fuel to get going every day too. “Pretty intense, huh.” She stepped over a small dent in the road, bat in one hand as usual. “Oi.” She scowled up at him, but clearly in that way where he knew she wasn’t serious. “Are you sure it isn’t just you? You give off major Protagonist-kun energy.” She teased right back before continuing. “I’m simply a helpless damsel who gets dragged along for the scary ride. Woe is me.” She shrugged, making sure to sound extra dramatic. Normally she would never joke about being a damsel, not when she had so much to prove to the world, but she was comfortable making jokes like that with Zen. The part about being a shit listener got a laugh out of her.

“Want me to jinx us? What do you think the next thread will be? I bet it’s gonna be some giant scary sewer rat.” She blinked her eyes and looked up at them, grinning mischievously. “He’ll go for your popcorn first.”

She was getting better at handling his mock-bullying and was starting to hold her ground if not go along with it for the sake of the bit. She had a point though, while getting into life threatening situations was a daily occurrence when the two of them hung out, it happened plenty of times with other people as well. Maybe he was actually the one that attracted all the trouble. "God help the world if he made me the protagonist. I can't imagine a worse job than that." He looked down at his companion as he inhaled another handful of popcorn. "Though I guess if you're the damsel in distress than I wouldn't mind saving you every once in a while"

Freja's comment about jingling them would receive an eye roll from the titan. "I seriously doubt there is a big enough rat in this city that could steal my popcorn from me, Helt. That's just silly" They grinned and poked at Freja's side "Besides what in the world would a sewer rat want with my popcorn? There is WAY better food around here."

As if on queue a chorus of screams erupted from their left, people running wildly yet again from some unknown threat. Just as the golden boi turned his attention to the kerfuffle a blurry, brown flash past by him and in an instant their popcorn was gone. Following the direction of the blurs trajectory, Zenkai was greeted to the sight of a gigantic, gnarly looking rat with shabby clothes. In its two front paws lay the titan's prized popcorn along with various jewels and other food. "Fuck me running, Helt. You really did just jinx us."

She smirked at his reply. “No protagonist ever wants to be the protagonist.” She felt a faint blush coming on and quickly looked away when Zenkai brought up her being a damsel in distress, she had practically set herself up for that one. Since when had she become comfortable enough to joke about that? With Sumi, Miroru, Zenkai? Usually being weak and needing protection was somewhat of an anger trigger for her. Not even because she was quirkless, even back before the swap when she was Elias it was a whole complex she had about her. She still remembered David handing her the knife. Telling her to take a life if she wanted to prove herself. The memory made her shudder silently.

“It wants to steal the hero's popcorn, that’s why.” She made up some excuse on the fly, poking them back with the tip of her bat. Her conversations with Zen were always strange, but never boring. One minute they could be talking about school or movies, the next she was hyping up a hypothetical giant sewer rat.

When the screams first filled the air Freja turned to look too, but just like Zenkai she wasn’t fast enough to stop the blur that zipped past them. “Huh?” It took her a brief moment, but when she noticed what Zenkai was referring to she let out a surprised shriek of her own, scrambling to raise her bat and get ready to fight. “M-Me?! I didn’t do that!” She took a few steps forward keeping her bat raised as she addressed the sewer creature. “S-Sir? Can you understand me?”

[attr="class","ZenkaiExposition"]"You definitely did do that!" Zenkai shouted as he pointed to the hideous rat thing in front of them. "You said giant sewer rat and BAM! GIANT SEWER RAT!" The titan roared as he pointed an accusatory finger at the girl. "This is your fault and you know it!" Zen couldn't finish that sentence without cracking up. The perfect timing of their most recent catastrophe was just too much for the poor boy. "Next please tell me we're going to find a million dollars each so we don't have to deal with this creature"

The rat for its part had stopped to listen to the two would-be heroes bicker. It was twitched and quaking as it held onto its prized possessions for dear life. "Meeksies run for life, Meeksies chased from home by mean greens" The rat twitched in response to Freja's question. "Meeksies just want to sleep well in home with treasure" Zenkai honestly had no idea what the rat was talking about but it was pretty clear that this was a rat with a quirk to mimic a human and not the other way around.

"Uh…So…You need help bud? Where did you get all those shiny things from? Who is the mean green?" The titan asked as the rat twitched nervously. It didn't take long for Zenkai's question to be answered as four human sized turtles jumped out of the sewers to confront the Rat "Give us our loot old man! The Sewers are our turf now and if you want to love down there you're going to have to pay the fee." One of the turtles, sporting a red headband snapped at the scared rat. The golden boi noticed each turtle sported a different headband and a different weapon, it was surreal.

"You've got to be fucking kidding me." Zenkai sighed and turned to Freja "You did this, you did all of this and now I have to deal with it"

She shook her head. “No way! That’s not how it works, I’m quirkless, remember? If anything this would have to be the work of a quirk!” She pointed an accusatory finger back at Zenkai even though she wasn’t directly accusing them of anything. “If it was that easy to manifest things I’m sure our world would look very different.” Not that she would mind a million dollars.

“Mean greens?” She looked back at Zenkai, gradually lowering her bat as she realized the rat wasn’t about to pounce them after all. A yelp escaped her lips as she turned to look at the turtles ascend from below. Just what the heck was going on in Tokyo’s sewers? Maybe there was a chance these turtles were actually just bags of money in turtle costumes.. Right?

“I did this??? Are you hearing yourself? I said giant rat. I didn't mention an entourage of giant mobster turtles! I bet it was you, you and your guy brain thinking about silly guy things!” She poked at them with her bat. She took a moment to catch her breath and then looked back at the scene that was unfolding. Four armed turtles and a scared rat. “How do we deal with this, anyway? Turtles..” she spoke up trying to get their attention with a small wave. “Yeah hi, mind filling us in on what’s happening here?”

He shouted back at her as the entire gang of mutant animals watched the two of them bicker like an old married couple. "The turtles might be a little extra but the rat is definitely all your fault, I mean it's so oddly specific how could it not be?" Zenkai rolled his eyes as he turned to face the four new arrivals as Freja asked them about what was going on. He was right and he knew it.

"Stay out of the way babe, this is sewer business. We don't need topsiders like you getting in the way!" The red turtle spoke. "We're the adolescent humanoid mobster turtles, we own the sewers now and if anyone wants to live there they got to pay use!" The blue one spoke, only to be hit by the red one "Bruh, I just told them it isn't any of their business, why you telling them all that?" The red one scolded as the blue one slicked backwards "Sorry dude…just excited about the name is all…" The red one smirked "Yeah…It's pretty rad"

The sapphire-eyed titan to turns between looking at the group bicker and throwing accusatory glances towards Freja as the situation unfolded before them. "So…You're the bad guys then huh?" Zenkai asked once the group was finally finished arguing. "No, you topsiders don't understand how the sewers work" Zenkai sighed and shook their head slowly as he cracked his neck "Well…you're topside right now and mugging creepy little rat people is against the rules, so why don't you just move along and go back to the sewers"

Of course, the group of turtles chose not to go back to the sewers.

She couldn’t believe their logic. “Oh, just now? Just manifesting out of nowhere? Wouldn’t that be convenient!” She pouted, crossing her arms as she turned her head away from Zenkai. “I get it now, this has to be your doing, it’s just like.. a dumb prank or something, right?”

“Topsiders?” She furrowed her brow looking slightly offended, even if she didn’t know if it was meant as an insult. As blue and red over here bickered, Freja looked back at Zenkai mouthing a very confused ‘what the fuck??’ “Adolescent humanoid mobster turtles?” She muttered, as if the very words themselves had flavor and that flavor was the sewers they came from. How had she ever felt bad about her own hero name choice when there guys paraded that name around proudly.

Zenkai was trying to give the turtles an easy out, which they were foolish not to take. After they had so kindly asked them to back off, Freja’s patience was wearing thin. It wasn’t the right thing to do, but their perceived opponents were armed and not backing down. Dashing forward, Freja swung her bat at the blue turtle’s head, deciding to strike first since her and Zenkai were outnumbered anyway. “We asked you NICELY!” She hissed, committing fully to her swing.

[attr="class","ZenkaiExposition"]If this situation happened when the two of them had first started going out on patrols together than the titan was sure that his shy little partner would have stayed back and tried to convince the turtles to leave as well. This was not their first patrol though, and instead of trying to de-escalate the situation Freja decided to do the exact opposite and chose violence. It was an entertaining choice to say the least and while Zenkai was usually against unwarranted violence they did like this new side of Freja.

The turtles for their part reacted accordingly. The red one lifted up his Sais to block the bat as the red of the gang sprung into action. While the two of them might have been outnumbered it was pretty doubtful that they were out gunned. There was no way in hell that a group of teenaged turtles were strong enough or trained enough to beat their asses. "Helt, even I know the first rule of heroics is to de-escalate the situation." The monkey king playfully chided as he covered Freja's back.

The Turtles reacted as expected, spreading out so that the red and blue were fighting Freja and the purple and orange ones were fighting Zen. "Just letting you know, Helt. Even if we're doing this in the name of justice, we're still abusing animals" The titan joked as he charged at the staff-wielding purple turtle, deflecting a blow from the wooden stick before countering with a blow straight to the chest, doing no real damage but sending the turtle flying backwards. "I forgot…we have to hit them in the head don't we?"

She didn’t want to appear eager to escalate, but the truth was armed turtle mutants refusing to back down were intimidating. Especially coming out in a group like this. Maybe they weren’t to Zenkai, but to someone like her she would rather keep the advantage going into the fight, because they were probably going to lose it quickly. Even so, despite her acting quickly, her bat was still blocked by one of the turtles.

“I tried de-escalating!” She tried to defend herself, but even she knew she had been quick to pull the trigger. She wasn’t even eager to fight, she just didn’t want a repeat of what happened when her and Farrin were ambushed. These turtles were speaking the language of the street, refusing to back down and so she answered in kind. “You’re making it worse!” She whined, regretting her decision to attack more and more by the seconds. “Do we?” She parried and dodged a series of incoming attacks herself. When she and Zenkai first went on patrol she definitely wasn’t this strong. She had a long way to go, but she had improved already. Bringing her bat around, she stayed within a close range of the blue and red turtles, this time aiming to try and disarm the red one with a swing to his wrists. “Listen, it’s not too late to go back to the sewer!”

Zenkai chuckled as he dodged a blow to the head by the nunchuck wielding orange turtle. "I'd hardly call charging at them with a bat "De-escalation", listen, I won't judge, were you just trying to pick a fight?" The golden boi continued to tease his companion as he dodged a few more strikes from the orange turtle. It was far more interesting to make fun of Freja than to deal with the teenaged turtles and their Accutane rage. It was this attitude that got Zenkai as staff across the face as the purple one struck while his attention was on the orange one. "Hey! One on one's! It's only fair!" Zenkai protested though the tone in his voice made it clear he wasn't expecting any kind of sympathy from his attackers.

The while the blue one ran around to Freja's side the red one engaged the bat weilding maniac in one on one combat. Attacking and parrying as the would-be hero swung her bat at him. Eventually though the quirkless hero got the better of the turtle and one one might blow sent her bat straight into the wrist of the turtle with a sickening crack. The red one screamed in pain as he dropped his Sai as his wrist was broken. Even though his other weapon had yet to be disabled it was clear he'd be out of the fight for the time being.

Now that they felt it, probably. He had tanked actual lighting strikes from a crazy monk, surely taking hits from a staff was just another Tuesday with that physique.

She was already out of breath. Her attempt to disarm the red turtle had been a success, but she was running out of steam fast. Freja was used to fighting one on one, or at the very least with equal numbers. She hadn't been put in a situation like this before. Not since her training session with Miroru, and even then her classmate had been a lot more merciful than these turtles proved to be. ''Zenkai!'' Even in a life or death situation she couldn't help but feel concern for them, maybe more so than she did for her own well-being. Had she seen them tank hit after hit? Yes, between the lightning monk and the burning house she shouldn't still be getting afraid, and yet seeing that nun chuck smack against the back of their head... She could only fear the worst.

Rather than try to position herself so that she could guard or parry the blue turtle's katanas, she instead aimed the tip of her bat towards his stomach, pressing the mechanism to fire as she attempted to fire her grappling hook right into his stomach, hopefully stopping him before his deadly blades could find their target. ''Zenkai! Are you okay?'' She called out, only glancing over her shoulder.

Now that they had a splitting headache they were in no mood to deal with the turtles bullshit any longer. They didn't get angry, Zenkai didn't do angry, but they did want to go home and sleep and they easiest way to do that was through violence.

The nunchuck wielding turtle stood no chance as Zenkai reached out and grabbed ahold of his shell. Spinning around as fast as he could, Zenkai through the masked turtle directly into his brother watching the two of them go tumbling into a concrete wall nearby. "Now you've gone and done it, now we're actually going to have to kick your asses." The golden boi said confidently as they rubbed the back of their head.

The blue turtle was hit dead center by Freja's surprise attack, causing him to go sailing backwards, dropping his Katanas. "You know what, you topsiders aren't worth it, we're getting out of here!" The red one shouted, picking up his Sais before running away. "Yeah, if you're ever down in the sewers you're dead meat!" The blue one added before the rest of them took off, presumably to go find a sewer grate to crawl into.

"Yeah…I still have no idea what the fuck just happened" Zenkai sighed after the four turtles took off, looking around for the rat who was nowhere to be seen. "Well, thank God that's over" The titan shouted as they laid down on the ground and sprawled out. "Let me use your lap as a pillow, I need a nap, my head is killing me" the monkey king closed their eyes as the let out a frustrated sigh. They were going to have to go into the sewers and deal with those fucking turtles at some point. They just knew it.
