"Okay," she whispered, waiting for Kenzou to leave before looking at Kaida. "I'm not. I think I still might get sick," she says, setting her head on the table and shifting her position. "...Kaida. The island that the detective mentioned..." She closed her eyes, hands balling into fists. "I'm...One of my friends in high school. We were all in a military program. One of those that, if we chose that route, would give us some advancement if we signed up for the defense force. I didn't know if I was going to follow through, but my friend for sure wasn't. She was going to go to UAU. She wanted to be a hero, and the course was to buy time and make friends. She survived the incident, but...she suffered severe enough trauma so she couldn't fulfill her dream." She looked up at Kaida, tears running anew down her face. "When I was a kid, when I learned about my quirk, I blew a hole in the apartment that me and my parents lived in. No one was hurt, but it scared me. It showed me I had a power that was far greater than my peers. My friend, Shiromiya, had something that was far weaker, something that was mundane, but she had a spirit that could make it in this world." She took a breath, wiping her face. "I promised my mother I would never set down this path...that I would never use my quirk ever again. And because of that promise...the attack on the island was so sudden. I watched three of my classmates get flattened. Two more died making sure that as many people got to safety as possible. And I did nothing." She sniffled, trying to clear the tears but failing. "Kaida, Shiromiya's barely alive, but I could have done something. Anything. Maybe the first three could have been the only casualties. Maybe, if I had done something sooner, no one else could have gotten hurt. It wasn't until after communications were cut, that everyone was corralled into different parts of the island, that I did something...I'm not okay. I don't think I'll ever be okay, because I have to live with the guilt. If...if I seem like a burden, then tell me. Alongside Jun's words, Kaida couldn't help but think of her friend's mother furthermore when she mentioned her. In the brief moment they were alone together at Jun's house, Jun's mother had quietly and solemnly thanked Kaida for being Jun's friend— and she knew with the tremor in her tone, loneliness hadn't been a factor in Jun's small circle of friends. Something else had happened, but out of respect for her privacy, Kaida had never questioned anything. But her actions, Jun's intense stubbornness, suddenly had a lot more credibility to it.[break][break]

To hear Jun hurt like this hurt her— but it's never about her, it's only about the people she wanted to protect, and the people she wanted to destroy. Like Jun, she's incredibly stubborn when she wants to be, and that would likely never change— but it's different when you directly hurt the people around you, the ones you tried so hard to protect. Kaida blanched as Jun finished, firmly gripping her friend's shoulders as she bared her teeth.[break][break]

"Don't say that," she hissed. "you could never be a burden to me. I— you're right, I have been selfish, and I... I really, really don't deserve your kindness for all I've put you through, and I'm thankful for you being here. But some of this won't change, and what happened might happen again." Her thoughts flash back to Kenzou's lifeless body in that harsh sea-spray, and Jun's words about her friend's deaths. "People might die, and there's nothing we can do about that. If you want to continue doing this with me, you have to acknowledge that path won't be a painless one. There's going to be a lot of hardship. If you understand that, then I'll do all I can to keep us charging through it."[break][break]

Kaida quieted for a moment, breathing in through her nose as she closed her eyes, as if revalidating her existence. "You don't have a place in my world, but despite that fact, you're here every day of my life. Your tenacity is one of the things I admire about you, you know." In the brief snap of Kaida's vulnerability, there's a gentle and genuine smile, before it's gone like a blizzard rushing through a brittle forest, and the dragoness stood to her full height once more and retrieved the tanto on the table. "We should get moving to that appointment before Kenzou drags us out."[break][break]

Outside of the building, Kenzou waited still with his terrifying smile and stared down at them as they exited. Kaida took note of the meter tall object of something wrapped in red cloth that he was holding, and definitely didn't have before. "You've returned, good! We should make haste to your teacher's office at once! But firstly," Kenzou said, unwrapping the cloth and revealing a stack of bento boxes. "here!"[break][break]

He gave one to Kaida and one to Jun. Wordlessly, Kaida stared down at it as if it were going to poison her. "Where did you even get all of those?"[break][break]

"A passing salesman was offering them to workers on their breaks! I thought it was generous of him, so I bought all of them!"[break][break]

Kaida sighed, silently taking note of how Kenzou was staring at the tanto in Kaida's other hand. "Of course you did."[break][break]

"There's no time to lose! Let us depart immediately!"[break][break]

Kaida sighed again, moving to enter the taxi that was waiting for them.

Jun sniffled, listening to Kaida talk about the hardships, about how they weren't compatible, but...at the same time, she admitted something that Jun didn't expect. It was between the lines, something that Jun had to learn a long time ago, but it was the fact that her actions mattered. Something she did, mattered. Jun raised one of her sleeves and wiped her face, nodding slightly as she slowly got up. "Alright..." Her drive and determination was something she didn't quite get, though. Was she really that stubborn and thick-headed...? Outside she looked at the bentos, opening and closing her mouth. "Uh...I still don't have much of an appe-" Her stomach growled, and she blushed. So much so that she couldn't refuse the box that was now being shoved into her hands. She would pile into the taxi along with Kaida, taking a deep breath. "Well...at the very least, we started on all this together. We can end all this together. Nothing can stand up to us if we keep working together..." Kaida Ikarashi

Many hands make light work, her sister had once said. Kaida had tried her hardest to strongarm her way through her clan, but she was slowly starting to come to the realisation that most likely all of it would come to naught if she had no one to back her up. The first and main reason why she had ever done anything solely by herself and only herself was because she didn't want to hurt anyone who might have cared about her. But Jun's insistence was getting to her, as well as the hot breath of the law and media down her spine— not to mention those unreadable stares Kenzou gave her when he thought she wasn't looking.[break][break]

"Not like you'd be going anywhere with your roundabout train of thought and stubbornness," Kaida joked, poking at Jun's temple playfully, before abruptly stopping. That was unlike her. "...Sorry."[break][break]

Where did that come from?[break][break]

Kenzou quietly watched from the front passenger seat with his arms crossed, still smiling, although his grin seemed to soften into a more genuine smile at that moment. If anything stood out in this small moment in time, it was the glances that kept being thrown Kenzou's way. It's not every day one of Tokyo's top heroes hops into your taxi, after all.[break][break]

They swiftly arrive at Ouros Investigative and Hero Agency. To Kaida's surprise, it's not anything like the modern buildings and towers agencies are usually placed in, like Kenzou's Perihelion Agency. The ocean had glittered in the distance before they arrived at the traditional Japanese villa, Kaida nodding appreciatively at the sight. Given the estate she was brought up in, she much preferred old rustic style to sterile white tiles.[break][break]

To Kaida's dismay, Kenzou walked straight up to the front door and knocked on it. Loudly. And shouted. Loudly. "Miss Pavlina! Your students have arrived!"[break][break]

Reflexively, Kaida put both hands on her flattened ears, embarrassed. Being with him in public was one thing, but in front of her own teacher? She didn't know how to react to that.

She dabbled a little here and there with the bento on their way to Ouros, and she realized just how tired she was. The number of emotions, the stress, all of it was slowly wearing her down. So much so that being here, having to face one of her teachers...there was nothing left in the tank for her to feel in order to show fear. "Principal, I don't think that's the appro-" Iphi tried to explain her plan but the principal wasn't having any of it. "Iphi. You're an alumnus and a teacher. I've known you for years, and I know what happened with Ouros." Iphi's entire body would tense up as she felt the guilt of her rash decisions. "You can look after these two, but I expect you to prepare the proper line of questioning AND provide guidance. Clear?" Iphi's hands would tense for a moment and then relax. She didn't like playing the bad guy but was obligated to the school and the rules that students needed to follow. At least in her incident years ago she had graduated, so there was more emphasis on personal accountability than punishment in the case of Jun and Kaida.

The Present

Iphi awaited the arrival of her students. Everyone else was either out on an assignment or had the day off, so Ouros was relatively empty. She had given many interrogations before when it came to the detective work, and in the case of 'scaring the girls straight,' she was dressed for the occasion. She was wearing a short-sleeve suit with her hair tied up into a top bun. Opening the door she didn't have a happy expression on her face, greeting Kenzou with a solemn "Kenzou-san. Thank you for bringing these two here." her yellow eyes would flit between the two girls, disappointed in their actions and yet still hopeful that they could turn this all around with a bit of guidance. "Follow me." she'd gesture as she let the group follow her to the conference room. With the lights low she'd take a seat at the head of the table and rest her head on her hands, staring unblinking at the two girls.

Kaida swallowed as Iphigenia answered Kenzou's shout with a perturbed look on her features. It didn't bode well with her.[break][break]

"I will wait outside whilst you three discuss what actions must be taken." Kenzou said with a nod. [break][break]

Kaida looked at Kenzou over her shoulder before following Iphigenia inside, taking note of their surroundings. A calm environment, contrasting what she expected of a Hero Agency, and not unwelcome. As Iphigenia sat down, Kaida took note of her appearance. From what she could tell, the teacher seemed to be under immense stress, and not undoubtedly because of the actions the pair of students took. The senior chewed on her lip, feeling guilt gnaw at her chest. How did she even start?[break][break]

"I take full responsibility for my actions, which in turn, caused Jun to act rashly." The words flowed out of Kaida's mouth before she could stop them. "I have always felt as though the crimes in which my clan have acted on should be punished by my hand, and my hand alone— to pick up after their mistakes because I am of the same blood as them, and I should be the one to deal with it so no one else suffers." Kaida rubbed at her forehead, then the circles under her eyes, a hand covering her mouth. "But I realise, my actions have caused the people I try to protect nothing but emotional duress." Kaida trailed off. "I would like to..."[break][break]

Do what? She wasn't entirely sure yet. Leave it to the officials? She didn't trust them to help the innocent people in the clan. There were many in her family that hadn't done any wrong, and ostracising them was the wrong move. They needed one of their own to help them. At least, that was how she saw it.

For the girls it would be as if Iphi never blinked. She couldn't relax just yet until she did her job properly and that was the unfortunate act of interrogating these girls over their conduct. She would listen intently to their explanation, which made it abundantly clear that Kaida was the instigator, which wasn't news but it was something she needed to make a note for her own report. She'd take the time to write down what Kaida was saying all without breaking eye contact and she would do the same to Jun when it was her turn to speak.

Not only did you two break one of the most ironclad rules at UAU, but you actively prevented those with full credentials from doing their job." her eyes would shift over to Kaida's "regardless of family ties. You're both upperclassmen and should know better. There have been plenty at the school who have lost their spot for less."

She would pull out two files from her desk and drop them in front of the two. They were a comprehensive compilation of their personal histories and accomplishments at UAU. The one thing they would notice was different than the rest is that the section which detailed their enrollment was currently listed as 'tentative' for Jun and for Kaida there was a much harsher 'Student Enrollment should be terminated'. She'd give them a few minutes to catch up on this before speaking up once more. "So, would you like to remain as UAU students? Or should I collect your I.Ds here and now?" She still felt bad scaring the two like this, but at the request of the principal if they were to get off with just house arrest AND if Iphi's investigation into this was going to be turned into a lesson they really needed to understand the gravity of this situation.

Her history beyond U.A.U is spotty, and that's a given. No one but the clan knows what went on back home when she was a kid. There's more detail about her homelessness after being exiled, how she was recognised as a descendant of the Ikarashi, and her minor crimes committed before being absolved after joining the hero university. Kaida isn't stupid. She knows the only reason she's still in U.A.U is because she has her uses— the authorities can keep a closer eye on her that way, but even they're getting fed up with the dragoness' antics. Even she can outlive her uses. So as much as she wants to scream and shout that it isn't fair, that she didn't ask to be used her entire life, Kaida can only look up at Iphi with quiet bitterness and contempt.[break][break]

"What do you want us to do?" Kaida asked her, voice thin as a paper sheet, ready to rip in half and start defending herself if she needed to. She was not afraid of any consequence.

Iphi's shoulders slumped as she sighed, watching the two react to this interrogation. In a way it was like looking into a mirror of her own past. Kaida's silent defiance through clenched teeth was precisely how she would react when she was a student and dealt with the administration regarding her recklessness. Then there was Jun, who acted with more empathy, feeling remorse for her actions, yet remained stalwart when it came to her friend, easily something Sadako would and did do.

The only reason why Iphi would want to do this was to lull Jun and her into a false sense of security so they would slip up and admit everything.
