Leveraging as many connections as she could, Iphi was set up in a remote facility with some of the most advanced equipment. She was there because she wanted to conduct some live research on recreating the methods in which quirks operated and making support equipment for those like herself with less of a ‘traditional’ quirk. Sure, there had been plenty of research into the application of equipment to facilitate quirk usage with heroes and villains popping up over the last few decades with a wide variety of quirks, some similar to what one would expect from a comic book superhero and others swung wildly in either direction from being very mundane to completely uncontrollable. She even knew some people personally who were actively researching the potential to extract the quirk factor to see if it could be applied to other people or even inanimate things! Truly fascinating stuff.[break][break]

The idea to conduct this study in this originated from a question posed by a student in a class she was subbing. ‘Why can’t we make gear that could work like our quirks?” It was truly one of the few times in recent years she was completely caught off guard, having spent a long time sorting through the well of a brain she had for either an example or any studies actively being conducted before ultimately coming up with nothing. Even though she likely hadn’t been the only person to ever think of this she did have the means to put it into practice. So through a combination of the school's network and navigating the hero network she put a word out.[break][break]

Looking for willing test subjects to demonstrate and explain the functions of their quirk in a controlled environment.[break][break]

At the predetermined place deep in the heart of Tokyo, she waited in the control room for anyone who chose to accept this offer, sitting at a console in front of a glass window where the person, once they entered the room and greeted her, would end up to conduct the tests. [break][break]

Shion Utsui, another first-year student at UAU. Man, it seemed like the 1st years were much more eager to participate in extracurricular activities than the previous year's students. From his student profile, he had a fairly rare type of quirk that was often coequally dubbed a 'summon'. Being able to imbue objects with sentience or at least give them temporary complex thought would be a massive boon in support equipment, especially with the potential application for civilian use. Another one Iphi was eager to see in action!

Shion stepped out of what effectively was a room of its own, one that even contained some chairs and a desk inside. Riding the train here had been a trip filled with both dread and hope for the youth. While normally he would fly from place to place, an occasion like this made him want to avoid the sky altogether. No matter how perfect of a blue it was today. Finally, a professional could take a closer look at his quirk- and he would walk out of the building with answers. For better or for worse. The door. . . was it this one? Shion stood in the corridor, turning around to gaze at the empty plastic chairs where people would presumably wait to see whoever was behind the door before him. A doctor's office immediately came to mind, a spotless room where the wise man would identify the imbalance of humors within a human body. He disliked hospitals in general. It reminded him of something that had been accepted, yet was still feared in his heart. "Good morning. . ." Iphigenia would immediately see features of the youth which stood out as he entered. Magenta hair, large eyes, and a shade of skin that closely matched that of the researcher herself. It was clear. Geographically, their genetic homelands must have been quite close to one another. "Are you Professor Pavlina?" The voice which would ask the pro hero beyond the glass barrier was one that blurred the lines between feminine and masculine. Though, judging by the structure of their skeleton, an educated guess would result in the conclusion that they were a human male. Shion's face was calm, yet carried a hint of worry. First impressions were always important to Iphi. Partly because she tried to be as cordial as possible and the other part being that she never forgot the first time she would meet someone. Not exactly one to get flustered but she definitely had a rough start in her teaching career compared to Sadako. Empathy was something she forgot at times as her brain was flooded with facts and figures most of the time.

"Good Morning Shion!" She'd rise from her seat and given a customary bow. She had already read his file to know that in spite of his androgynous appearance, he was male, not that it mattered either way. "You can call me Iphi or Recall if you'd like! Whatever makes you the most comfortable." she was subtly eyeing him up and down, trying to see if his summon was active and assumed that it either was the broomstick of had something to do with it. "So, this is a testing facility where the project I'm working on is to find a way to employ quirks into support equipment." she would lead him into the testing chamber where the headpiece and wrist wraps laid where they always did "From this console I'll be monitoring your brain waves and vitals to collect some data on your quirk! Once you put those on, could you explain to me, in as much detail, how your quirk functions? I'd be happy to give any answers or suggestions based on that information." she'd let Shion get situated as she took her own seat in the next room, sparking the intercom "Whenever you're ready."

He wasn't exactly the biggest fan of having objects hooked up to him as it reminded him of hospitals- just like this building they were in, but thankfully it matched his expectation of what things would be like. Iphigenia moved to the other side of the room after her friendly greeting, to which Shion wasn't acting receptively to like he would any other time. Having followed her into the testing chamber, he removed some hair accessories so they wouldn't get in the way, pocketing them. After which he unbuttoned the cuffs of his shirt so they could be pulled up to the elbow. Having put on the wrist bands, the helmet was put on with his head facing upwards so his hair wouldn't get in the way. Once the complex machinery had turned on, connected to the mainframe from which Recall was watching, Shion started to explain the workings of his quirk. "So. . . I'll start now. My quirk allows me to summon Toto whenever I'm touching a broom, or anything like a broom with my body. He's usually the same size of- I guess a few meters." Shion's tone and manner of speech was hesitant, almost as if he was purposely trying to omit a detail as the broom in his hands slowly melded to become a motionless creature with many eyes. Resting on his lap. "Through a way I can't understand Toto can just- fly. Say no to gravity. They can carry the weight of about a single person, and can be as fast as one of those pricey motorcycles." He raised a knuckle, tapping the alien on it's body twice as a sound akin to a rock being hit with a hammer was barely heard to Iphigenia on her side. From his body language Iphi could see that the prospect of being hooked up to machinery wasn't exactly something he was keen to do. "If any part of the test feels overwhelming or you need to a break just say so, this is entirely voluntary from start to finish." hopefully some words of encouragement would help him feel more at ease. As a teacher the safety of students came first even if she really wanted to satiate her own curiosity with a test of his abilities.

She'd watch eagerly as the broom "came to life" resembling an alien creature you would find in media. It was definitely a more odd manifestation. From her experience quirks that let you summon or imbue properties into objects usually fell into either a completely autonomous summon, as in a creature created from the quirker OR imbuing properties into objects to increase their performance. Very rarely was it both and this alone was enough for her to check the headpiece to see what kind of activity was going on in his brain. It was lit up like a Christmas tree! In all the ways that didn't really make much sense, perhaps it was because of his connection with Toto? She'd need some more answers.

Shion responded to Iphi's voice through the intercom with a bit of the same anxiety, though the reason for it might not have been what the seasoned hero though it was. Feeling relieved that Recall seemed to have placed trust in them already, the youth continued. Allowing his companion to simply hang in the air as they were raised with one arm. He didn't really want to think about it, but the whiteness of the testing room felt quite. . . vacant. Like an empty bottle, there wasn't much inside of it to enjoy. Though it made sense, this room was intended for practical activities only. Maybe something could be painted on the walls? No. Scratch that. A decorated room looking empty only made it spookier! "I just think something, and Toto always does the closest thing to that! No better way I can explain it." Shion explained as the alien simply floated, their glazed eyes simply looking upwards at the ceiling. Despite being possibly called "cute", Toto had the emotive abilities of a fish. On Iphigenia's end, the student's brain activity was indeed worth noting. The flat screen showed information that the combination of having Toto active and engaging in cognitive processes made everything seem quite erratic in Shion's head. Truly an exciting case. She was less focused on Toto and more on the unusual brain activity from Shion. She had already formulated a few hypothesis as to why his quirk worked the way it did and the usage of Toto further supplemented her main theory. Her eyes would flick between the screens, making a mental note that his vital signs were incredibly stable and all the activity was located in his brain. "Not surprising that it's a mental command. I've worked with many who have quirks that involve manifesting objects or constructs; most don't require verbal commands." The only cases she'd seen where this wasn't true was with fully autonomous summon type quirkers.

"I'll have to dive more into the data. However, it looks like the manifestation of Toto involves erratic brain activity that is then transplanted into the object you summon Toto from. It's not you per say but it looks like Toto is fixed in your subconscious. The means to activate your quirk is the same as creating a manifestation of this deep rooted subconscious." She'd zoom in on the map of his synapses firing. "You're likely connecting your consciousness to Toto, so when you make commands or thoughts it travels like radio waves. They ping pong off of the item, in this case the broom, and that's likely why your brain lights up like a Christmas tree." she'd lean back and scribble some notes on her clipboard. "Anything else worth noting? Otherwise I think I've gotten all the data I need and I appreciate you coming out here to participate!"

終ノ空 Shion blinked; Iphigenia's explanation of his quirk's function bordered on mere technobabble for him. In through one ear, and out the other. "Okay." Mental command? He didn't really "order" Toto to do anything per se, they just did what he thought in his head. Manifesting? Subconscious? Erratic brain activity? Shion didn't quite get it, besides the part that this was all taking place within his head. He was never good at biology. Or science in general. Thinking back to high school, how he passed the tests was just memorizing everything then throwing it back up when needed. "Uh huh. . . so it's all in my head?" Christmas? Wasn't it a bit early? No, not the time for that yet! Instead of fruit cake, Shion's head appeared to be filled with something else entirely. A specific object that caused him to sweat a little, obviously a decision on how much to say or reveal for this person. "Well. . . Toto came in a little late for me. I was like 17 when they first came, and I think sis' had a quirk like mine- but she got it a lot earlier. I think she was 5?" The way he said it obviously came across as a facade of calm to someone as perceptive as the hero Recall. He did a good job of speaking normally, but the beads of sweat from before were still there. If anything Shion was genuine and spoke true to himself. She'd dealt with a lot of subjects which would just nod along with everything she said without questioning it, just accepting that whatever her assessment was was indeed the truth. For her, this was the fun part of being a scientist. Creating theories and hypotheses for why things were and continued to be the way they were. "I wouldn't exactly use that terminology; quirks are rooted in science. Highly specialized evolutionary traits that are molded after the quirk user." Since she had gotten all her readings she would place down her clipboard and push away from her desk, standing up and entering the room without skipping a beat "You should know that while the actual data isn't private as this is a joint effort any audio is under my care and mine alone." she'd unstrap him from the headpiece and cuffs "So you're free to speak your mind or share anything it'll stay between us." gently she'd place the devices back where they started making sure it was secure as it was a lot of yen to replace.

"A late bloomer, huh? Honestly, it's not as uncommon as you'd think. There's a theory that quirks are heading to a point of singularity." assuming he wouldn't have heard of this she'd continue. "The more generations of quirkers, the more strain they put on the body and as the generations follow one another, Quirks blend and evolve, producing stronger and more complex Quirks. However, with this increase in power, the Quirks will also become more difficult to control since the human body doesn't evolve quickly enough to keep up." assuming he'd let her, she'd put a hand on his shoulder. "You have nothing to worry about. Late bloomer or otherwise you have an impressive quirk and I look forward to seeing how you use it in the future."

終ノ空 As one of the brightest minds in Tokyo's community of researchers, Shion did expect some level of eccentricity in Iphigenia's behavior. There wasn't a "why" that he could understand for it, really. Special people tended to behave. . . special. While she reassured him, he couldn't help but think about what made Recall different. Her composed voice, large eyes that never seemed to blink when he was paying attention to them, and lack of stress or expressed emotion other than "calm" that Shion witnessed made him feel like a different specimen. "Oh, alright." If this wasn't a world filled with quirks, he'd definitely theorize if she could really be referred to as being within the bounds of a human being. "Uh huh! Singularity!" Shion nodded rapidly as Toto was now held to his chest like a plushie, the movement getting in the way of Iphigenia's hands as she tried removing the equipment on his head. He had heard that word somewhere before, but didn't understand it. Oh well, no reason not to nod along and pretend like he got like he did in class. But the catchup he had to do on his own after that. . . ugh. "Though. . . maybe there's one more thing I'd like to ask you, professor." All it took for Shion to spill the beans, may had been the little push of reassurance by Recall when he appeared uneasy. Quirks were always personal to their bearers, and because of that speaking of it was often paramount to revealing an aspect of oneself.  There was that theory suggesting that the person's nature directly affected the manifestation of their powers. . . even if it had been dismissed as pseudoscientific decades ago. But whatever, he could always imagine. "Let's say. . . that there's two siblings. One's got a quirk, but the other doesn't. One day, the sibling with the quirk- just passes away. The quirkless sibling develops a quirk a short time after that, and it's just like the one their sis- I mean, sibling had. And it happens a long time after the period quirks are supposed to manifest." Shion described the hypothetical scenario with great care and meticulousness, something that wasn't common for a walking bag of feathers like him. His voice also seemed to be more aware of the subject than when Iphigenia was explaining those concepts to him, paired with a quiet glance down at Toto in his arms. A single red eye looked straight at two yellow ones a few feet away, like two moons reflected on a red pond. "Would something like that be a coincidence? Just wondering." Iphigenia Pavlina

Shion sure wasn't the first person who didn't really grasp some of the conceptual parts of what she was explaining. Hell, most people his age didn't, especially 1st years. It was their first real experience in the hero world so it wasn't very common that someone had studied these more obscure aspects of quirks and the theories surrounding them. "You don't have to pretend for my sake. We're not in class after all. If you're by the administration building, you can come by my office for any follow-up questions." the nervousness Shion was displaying didn't go away but Iphi knew better than to push him into talking about it. Sadako had scolded her the first time she tried to give advice years ago as it was only solution-focused and lacking empathy. A side effect of her quirk made her really have to work at relating to people as she quite literally had an answer for everything. She was going to end the session right there, but Shion finally spoke up.

His 'hypothetical' was clearly derived from a real world experience. Which meant two things, either he was the one who he was referring to or he was speaking on behalf of someone else. Iphi would cup her chin and close her eyes as she thought, not actually pondering the question as she already had an answer to that, but rather trying to figure out the right way to say it while being respectful of Shion's feelings. Her eyes would flit down to Toto, unblinking as it stared back at her. "Hmm...I think that might be the property of a quirk in itself. It's not the first case I've heard of something like that happening." Freja Helt was another freshman who had a completely different quirk before the death of her sibling overwrote it. It wasn't likely that Shion would be speaking to Iphi on behalf of her and not wanting to expose her history she figured there might be a better way to connect the two of them. "There's an extremely rare class of Emitter quirks that can only bestow or transfer itself to others. In a lot of these cases the affected believes they're quirkless as the quirk doesn't activate until under specific conditions. Death is a catalyst for change." she tried to be as informative as possible without being insensitive. "If you want my professional recommendation I suggest that whoever you're referring to meets up with another contact of mine. This individual has had a very similar experience and it might be beneficial to chat with them." she'd hand Shion a card that had her personal line. "Think about it and I'll let you know when I finish processing the results. Thank you for you participation!"

終ノ空 "Ahaha- you really are perceptive. . ." Shion looked to the side with a bit of an "oh you got me" expression which communicated worry with a bitter smile. Had she figured everything out already?  Or hypothetically, was it even possible to lie to her? His attention snapped back to her words as Shion's much awaited answer unpacked itself from the black box. The same one he was unable to, yet reluctant to try and open on his own for several years now. Arguably, this is the most reckless thing he has done. It's not the first time. Neurons began firing around in Shion's gray matter just as much, if not more than a few seconds ago when said activity was monitored by Iphigenia's technology. So many possibilities, half-baked theories like raw dough rising up and deflating with the yeast of simple logic. "Death. . . the hypothetical person would be in this group of rare cases?" Quirks as a science so far has only been researched for half a century, not to mention the hiccups the path to progress had experienced over multiple catastrophes. As only a fraction of their true nature has been revealed, a lot of things were up to speculation. Hell, you didn't even need to be a scientist to come up with theories concerning why quirks came into being. And that's why there were so many that believed they were evidence of a "spirit world" or a realm beyond what humans could see. Was the "spirit world" involved in death being part of the catalyst? Or perhaps it was a genetic dead-man's trigger that activated in an effort to preserve it's own existence. Moving from one host to another and granting them the quirk. But can a quirk be so advanced to have a will of its own separate from the person it originated from? ". . . yeah." He said after a considerable pause. Any words Recall said after the point of Shion's current fixation seemed to go unheard. He simply stood there and appeared to zone out despite looking her straight in the eyes. Even Toto appeared to take notice, moving their eyes to glance up at their companion. "Oh. Well. Yeah! Absolutely! Thank you, professor! I'll definitely see you again!" The youth would frantically shake Recall's hand before turning around and darting out the door. Toto in tow.  Footsteps would echo through the empty halls as Shion stopped at a window, flinging it open and jumping out from a height of 5 stories without a second thought. He looked down at Toto as they both fell, eventually taking flight while regaining altitude. They were onto something now. Iphigenia Pavlina
