It's quiet.[break][break]

The gentle lull of water against the riverbank as well as the faraway birdsong echoing throughout the valley is the only thing that kept Kaida company as she landed in a clearing with the earth shuddering beneath her weight, the sand beneath her talons shifting as she circled to discern where she was. It was a rare occasion where she had nothing going on in her life— she couldn't attend class, because she was on house arrest, unlike now where she was permitted off campus for some fresh air, and she was glad that the faculty had some lick of sense. Her occupation at the shrine was up in the air. She didn't want to be on campus either, with the burning stares of her fellow students, and the sudden existence of Koharu sagged her shoulders. It hurt more than the injuries that riddled her body after her fight with Ichiro.[break][break]

In the mountains, away from everything, with no one in sight. She hardly thought anyone would be out here, far from any worn-down hiking path— the nearest one was two miles off. With that knowledge in mind, a heavy sigh escaped the dragoness' nostrils as she tucked her wings in, trudging over to the nearby stream to stare at her reflection that danced in the water.[break][break]

A monstrous face stared back. Sharp teeth curled over a perpetually frowning lip, with roughened horns and jet black fur, and piercing icy-amber eyes.[break][break]

Before she knew it, she had angrily slapped the water upon seeing herself, growling under her breath. Looking at her dragon's self reminded her of that beast in her head— a soulless entity with only carnage in mind. She didn't want to see herself like that, but as time went on more and more, it was getting harder to deny the truth. Kaida had come out here in the first place to train herself to get used to that voice, hadn't she?[break][break]

Chiharu

It had been a quiet day today. With Chiharu looking out the large window of her house, she was easily able to enjoy the nature that was close to them. With a sigh, she could hear the gentle sway of hundreds of trees due to the wind, the sound of birds leaving at a rapid pace- wait, that wasn't totally normal. Just as she was feeling herself get lulled off to sleep, she'd open up her eyes and try to decern what would cause such a disturbance in the forest.

Quickly as ever, she'd grab up her quiver and bow, placing on an attus with an attached hood onto it to try to hide her identity. With movements that followed where the majority of the birds had left from, Chiharu would swiftly get deeper and deeper into the forest in hopes that she could figure out the origin. She'd hope that it wasn't some idiot like the last few times, and instead someone that had accidentally startled the area.

Once she was certain that she was able to find where it had originated from, Chiharu would get in a crouching position as she inched closer. Her bow was half drawn as she kept her eyes open and alert for whatever could be lurking in the forest. It didn't take long to see what the commotion had been. A beautiful scaled creature was in the clearing, obsidian colored and larger than any beast she had ever seen. Where did something like that even come from?

Her breath hitched a bit as she watched from afar, trying to see if the creature was friendly or not. Chiharu knew not of what it was doing here, or what it would do to her, but out of curiosity she would slowly move away from the tree line and carefully try to get closer. She had no idea of the beast was even sentient, and if it would try to hurt her the second she had been spotted. All of that wouldn't matter though, as a loud clatter of all of her arrows falling from her quiver would alert the beast to her location. Shoot, she forgot to sew up the bottom of it again!

The tranquil environment is getting to her. She had intended on meditating but the harsh sensation of sleep deprivation is making her eyes hurt and her head droop, her chin almost hitting the ground twice in a row. Kaida had only gotten an hour of rest last night— maybe two, considering her state of lucidity, and how her usually consistent thoughts are jumbled. The dragoness reared her head and shook it, briefly thinking about dunking her head into the icy-cold water to wake herself up. Yeah, maybe that would work.[break][break]

A sudden sound snapped in her ears. Suddenly she doesn't feel so tired.[break][break]

Kaida inhaled, the sound draconic and frost racking her throat as she prepared to possibly blast whatever might have chosen to come after her, human or not. A flash of red flickered in the edge of her vision as she searched the edges of the clearing, cold eyes eventually landing on a figure. It's a person— no, a girl. Young. She looked as equally startled as Kaida felt. Given the panic the girl presented, the dragoness assumed her to not be a threat, simply staring in her direction and letting the ice within her mouth die back down. Instead, her ears perked with curiousity at her presence.[break][break]

It was unusual to see anyone else this far out. Perhaps, she was a hiker? She wasn't dressed like one, however— a peculiar sight Kaida never did see to be dressed like the girl was, in almost foreign robes with no sign of typical factory-type materials. Who was she?

Ah, it noticed her. Moving down slowly, she would pick up her arrows and hold them under her arm. The movements were slow and precise, as she did not want to know what would come out of the beasts mouth as it looked like it had been charging something up moments ago.

Chiharu would then bow deeply to the beast, stand upright once more, and speak. "Hello there great beast! I reside close to this forest and happened to see many of the birds part from this location. As I view these lands as sacred, I wanted to make sure that nothing was amiss." Her words were calm and eloquent, like she was talking to a person of royalty or high stature. "I welcome you to partake in this forest as much as you need. If you need to rest or relax, I will stand guard as your humble servant." Another bow, but this time she'd awkwardly half fall over as she noticed one of her arrows slip from under her arm.

Recovering from that, she'd sigh in relief that she hadn't made too much of a fool of herself, before looking back to the beast before her. "I mean you no harm! I would never injure something so beautiful!" The words slipped out of her mouth, and it made her wonder if this thing even understood Japanese. Did all this shouting just look like she was angry? Was her trying to be nice going to get her blasted away and killed?

From Kaida's limited knowledge, it appeared that the girl was almost talking like a messenger from the heavens— she had people flee from her draconic form in fear, or shout at her in anger, but never in such awe like she seemed to possess, whether it came from a place of fear or not. It was incredibly confusing, and quite possibly the first time that it had ever happened, which made her even more intrigued in this wayward soul that happened upon her. Perhaps, she was a hunter, or simply one of those ancient peoples called "mountain men" that roamed the wild in search of solace away from society?[break][break]

Either way, Kaida knew she was likely to bring no harm.[break][break]

For now, the voice in her head was oddly lulled to sleep, silent for the time being as she turned around fully to approach the girl. Though as she took her first steps forwards to get a closer look, she stuttered. [break][break]

Not once in her life had she expected to be called that. Monstrous. Beastly. Terrifying. Abomination. Demon. The actual, literal Devil, by most of her family members. But beautiful? What had warranted that? She leaned down to inspect the girl when she got close enough, a soft breath of cold fog exhaling from her mouth. Chiharu

She only hoped that she wasn't about to get eaten. The beast was still large, and even if it attacked her she was sure that she wouldn't be able to harm it. This animal was unlike anything she had seen before; she'd definitely have to ask her father if he'd heard or seen anything like it before. Was it something that was an urban legend in this area that she didn't know about? Chiharu had no idea, nor would she be able to know until she asked.

As it approached her, Chiharu wouldn't look scared, but instead slowly offer her hand to them. A smile was on their face, and Chiharu would wait patiently for them to want to get closer to her. Calm movements were essential for any animal, and this beast was no different. "I hope you are not hurt, mighty beast. It is hard to tell with the obsidian ocean that is your body." Even as Kaida crouched down to be eye-level with this crimson-haired wonder, with frost raising from her lip, the girl held only curiousity and wonderment in her eyes, even going as far as to raise a hand to her snout. Usually she would have bristled, snapped at anyone who came close to get away, tell them to not come closer, growl, roar, and screech all at once to just leave her alone and let her have her peace of mind. She didn't feel it here, not those red-hot emotions that made her think of herself as anything but a monster. The girl's hand came closer, so close she could almost feel the electricity in the air between them.[break][break]

The first dart hit her neck.[break][break]

Kaida reared back with an ear-shattering roar, all dormant and dozing birds in the nearby trees taking flight in fright and fish at the surface of the river's water darting back underneath to safety. Something— someone had shot her in the neck, there's a muzzle flash in the treeline she didn't see before. By the time she's trying to gather her surroundings, two more hit her in the shoulder, causing her to shriek out again, thrashing wildly and her tail splitting a nearby tree in half. She stumbled backwards, feeling the surging sensation of sleep pull at her eyes again, only this time it's not sleep deprivation pulling at her heart, it's drugs, tranquilising darts that are forcing her into her inevitable slumber.[break][break]

She stumbled backwards away from the girl in her daze, having half the mind to not get her caught up in whoever the hell had dared to attack her so cowardly out of the blue like this, and in her stupor something wrapped itself around her horns, dragging her to the side. The dragoness whipped around to face the man with wires in his hands, pulling her head towards him, ready to snap when another wrapped itself around her throat.[break][break]

There's people, a group of people, and they're trying to hunt her— no, trap her.[break][break]

"Its legs! Go for its legs!" Someone shouted.[break][break]

With the wire choking her, she can't breathe at the men surrounding her. Some of them even approach the girl, and Kaida weakly snarled in protest, pulling back a talon to slam down upon them, but she staggered, the effects from the darts in her bloodstream taking effect.[break][break]

Chiharu

This felt magical. Chiharu felt lucky that she was able to be around such a magnificent beast, even for a moment. There was a calmness in the air that made it all the more special in her mind; she got to be close and witness something so beautiful with her own two eyes. She was sure that she would have stayed like that forever. Her eyes would close, tranquil and calm in the presence of this beast.

Due to this, she was unable to see where the shot came from. She'd open her eyes and look around to see something hitting the beast with some sort of dart. Her eyes would trace over her surroundings, angry over the fact that someone would hurt this beast. Quickly, she would drop her arrows, taking one and stringing it into her bow. "You better back down, heathens!" Without another word, she shot at the man that was choking her, shooting at his leg in hopes that it would cause him to loosen his grip on her neck.

With the men approaching her, she would grab up her arrows and place them in her mouth. Loading up another, she would hiss at the men in disgust, looking over to the beast to see how it was fairing. She'd fire another shot at the men approaching her, aiming for their hands, arms, and shoulders. If her acquaintance was getting attacked, she wasn't going to back down until the very end.

The girl's shot made the man cry out in pain, his hold loosening on her neck. She'd like to extend her thanks, but there's already two other men replacing him, sleeked out in camouflaged uniforms and mud on their faces. Are they also hunters? Yes, people like them exist to rid the dangerous quirked beasts from these forests, however, their actions suggest them as otherwise. If they were hunters, they wouldn't be trying to attack that girl. Despite her lethargy, Kaida deduced them to be poachers, looking for a rare pelt to sell off to an illegal bidder.[break][break]

God damn it all. There's no way I'm ending up as someone's stupid throw carpet![break][break]

To her surprise, the girl seemed to be holding up very well on her own. Though more people appear at the edge of her vision, throwing ropes over her wings, one wrapping around her snout and clamming her jaw shut. Even if the girl did use up all her arrows, there's no way she can fight them all— not without the intention of killing, and with the way she simply seemed to be aiming to slow them, Kaida knows that there's a type of purity in the girl's heart that has yet to be shadowed. Run, the dragoness tried to tell her with her eyes, staring down at her. Run! This doesn't concern you! I'm not having anyone else caught up in my mistakes.[break][break]

Her legs are thrown out from beneath her, having no strength in her muscles to fight the wires that tugged at every possible surface on her body, falling to the ground with a snarl. She tried to shift, but the netting is a solid weight above her. Someone's boots moved into her vision from the ground, a more heavyset looking person, but their voice is lighter than the other's. They have a mask on. They all do. Tengu masks, she briefly realised.[break][break]

The leader folds their hands behind their back as they stare down at Kaida, into her blazing icy-amber eyes, now glazing over with tiredness. They look behind themselves and throw out a hand. "Leave the girl!" They said to the men surrounding the kind stranger. "Even if we do capture her, it just means more trouble for us. Let her run away." The leader looked down upon Kaida. "Even if she were to try to fetch help, I sincerely doubt anyone would care about one measly beast."

Chiharu

Even though she was making a dent in the efforts of them, it wasn't truly enough. More came by the second, coming out from their hiding and making it known that they had been in wait for the beast. Had she been the trigger? Had they been looking for an opportunity to strike when she would be vulnerable or distracted? Chiharu felt horrible, sick to her stomach even, that she had been the reason. As she ran out of arrows, only hitting them idly and not actually doing much damage to them, she would attach her bow around her body and pull out her knife.

She'd snarl at them all, looking at how the beast was looking at her in anguish. "The gods will curse you for trying to defile such a beast, mark my words." You did not just hunt for the sake of it- you only took what was needed, and cared for what that creature gave you. "People like you are scum." Her words were like venom, and she her gaze was strong and hateful towards the men that were there.

Still, she knew she couldn't do much on her own; at the same time, there was nothing in her that wanted to leave this beast alone. "If you are wanting to kill this beast, then you must kill me first." She'd say boldly, holding the knife that she had taken out. "People know of me, they know of my red hair and my eyes- if you harm this beast they will look for you and gut you all like you are wanting to do to them!" She'd shout as loud as she could, knowing no one would hear but hoping someone would. She'd stand her ground, planting her feet firmly where she was.

"Gods? Kill you?" The leader scoffed. "As if we would do such a thing. You should recognise that we're doing you a service— you won't have to worry about coming into these woods anymore with this creature about, and nor will any innocent passersby it might prey on! You would be wise to heed how lenient I've been with you thus far." The leader turned back to Kaida. "Leave while you still can, brat."[break][break]

Turmoil were like waves in Kaida's heart, smashing against a dam, but the leader's actions and words cement against the cracks. The more they droned on, the more they got impatient, the more it seemed like they were going to harm that girl. The kind stranger she had never met before, who was seemingly willing to give up her life for Kaida— and for what? What person could possess such selflessness? Was she just like that, or insane? What could she do against all these people?[break][break]

Against a mighty storm, all you can do is run for cover.[break][break]

Your light mustn't go out, Kaida thought, looking past the leader's legs at the girl. To think that I would just sit here and wallow while this happened— useless! Unforgivable! Disgraceful![break][break]

But some people choose to weather it.[break][break]

"I've already given you enough chances," the leader hissed, waving their arm. On cue, the men moved forwards towards the girl, wires in their hands. The leader flinched in response to Kaida's movement, looking over their shoulder at them, only in time to see her tail shoot forwards.[break][break]

Layered in sword-sharp ice, they barely had time to scream before the dragon flung them into the forest, out of sight in mere seconds. Panic ensued, terrified gasps as Kaida stirred just barely from her slumber with an attempt to stand, a snarl lifting her lips and her lids closing over her eyes as she rose, tail swinging and hitting the man holding her right wing down. With one part of her free, she strained against her bonds, finding little to no rebut against the cowards who were now screaming as she rose to her full height, her gaze set on something unseen— but to her she was looking at the sun, the sun— the person who had tried to desperately to help her.[break][break]

Sluggishly, Kaida marched forwards with a roar, the poachers actually leaping out of her way as she crossed the field in seconds, dipping her snout down underneath the girl, aiming to land her on the dragon's back. Kaida ducked as another tranquillizer dart was fired her way, bouncing off of her horns fruitlessly. She spread her wings and snapped at the men who got in her way as she made her running start to shoot into the air, high, high above the forest, far away from the people who had tried to hurt them.[break][break]

Kaida's draconic voice hissed out, the wind like needles against her feathers, pin pricks on her skin. Blankly she realised it was the same feeling for when you lose feeling in your limbs, the sensation of static. Time didn't feel real, nothing around her did, sleep like a chain dragging her into the darkness. The trees around them were coming up quicker than she had a waking moment to do anything about it— she barely registered herself wrapping her own body around the ground and before she knew it, a dull, flashing and unbearable pain struck its way like lightning across her body as she made contact with the ground. Eventually, she slid to a stop, the sun blaring against her tightly shut eyes. It was bright— had they landed in a field? It didn't matter. Nothing mattered. Only that they were away from those people... away, and safe. Kaida didn't realise she had returned to her human form, dirt a feeling on her hands and grass in her hair, shadowing her face. God... this wasn't what she had planned for today.

Chiharu

She had bitten off more than she could chew. Chiharu wasn't any strong warrior like her father. She wasn't going to make people intimidated by her with a simple look; she knew these men would rather pity her than actually harm her. Still, she wasn't going to give up on this beast and let it get used for a trophy. She'd stand her ground, no matter how small she was.

With her unmoving it seemed that they got bored of her. This was it, she was going to die protecting a beast that may not even know that she was doing all this for them. She was going to know that whoever found her have to tell her father that she died protecting an animal that she knew for five minutes. Still, she had no regrets.

Just then, it seemed that the beast could hear her worries. She was given the chance to escape with it, and she took it. Moving over, she'd grab onto whatever she could and pull her close. Chiharu would clutch onto whatever, and pushed her body against the beast as she felt it slowly lift off into the sky. Below her was the ground, and she knew that no amount of her strong hair would save her from a fall like that.

It was exhilarating as she felt the wind slap at her face and mess up her red hair. The beast had saved her, and itself, but she could tell that the tranquilizers were still having an effect on them. They'd barrel downwards, with Chiharu holding onto dear life as she tumbled to the ground. She'd hit a tree with a gasp, getting shocked awake out of the fear of dying to know that they'd made it. Taking a few seconds to look around, she saw no beast, but a person? She'd blink once, then twice; was she a transformation? Another glance around, and no beast was in sight. She shared the black features of the dragon, like its hair and clothing.

With a gulp, she would go over and poke her cheek with her broken bow. Was she alive? Was she just unconscious? After a few moments of no response, Chiharu would sigh and move to try and pick her up. With a lot of effort, Chiharu would do her best to lift the girl onto her back and slowly take her back to her place.

Amidst the cold, there was warmth. Kaida didn't like the warmth— if it ever came in the form of sweltering heat, the hot unbearable summers, she would shy away in a dark corner. The sun never liked her. It had a harsh gaze, and refused to let her enjoy its warmth, both mentally and physically. In some ways, she's always turned away from the light. But there's a soft fragrance in her dream, like the warm touch of someone's hand, a someone who she had never met, but felt like she could trust her life with.[break][break]

That same harsh sunlight pierced her eyes as she snapped awake, the setting sun doing no justice for her bleary vision. Then it's gone— the drug is still doing its rounds on her, pulling backwards only to be launched forwards straight into her body. Blearily, she fell unconscious again. The next time she stirred, greens blurred by her vision. It only felt like seconds before she's in a different environment, but logically, time must have passed quickly. Before Kaida knew it, she was in someone's home. She felt herself being set down somewhere— where that was, she wasn't entirely sure, but the more she woke the more she felt the guilt creeping in.[break][break]

She should say something. Really, she should. But Kaida doesn't feel like she's at a liberty to, not after endangering that girl's life like that. So she stayed quiet, and would only speak if spoken to.

Chiharu

Chiharu felt like she was strong, but she wasn't that strong. Carrying the girl did quite a number on her, and she found herself having to struggle to actually move her as she wished she could have. It was sluggish but calculated, as she didn't want to accidentally drop her even as it seemed that she stirred in and out of sleep and tranquility.

By the time that they got to her house, she swore that she put on some weight just in sweat alone. It was no matter, as Chiharu would place Kaida in her bed and gently place a handwoven multi-colored blanket over her. Checking her forehead, Chiharu would move to place a cold towel on it, slowly looking over her body to see if she had any visible wounds or if there was anything stuck into her from their fall.

"Hm... I hope a pretty lady like you isn't hurt... I wonder, are you the beast I saw earlier?" Chiharu spoke, not expecting Kaida to be awake, let alone reply to her. "Ah, it was so majestic. Those people will rue the day they dare to defile something so sacred, I swear." She'd shake her head, before leaning over Kaida to open up the window to allow some fresh air. With a sigh, she would get up from the stool she'd placed down beside her and move to the wardrobe a few paces away. Without a care in the world, she would start to unwrap her attus in hopes of changing it out for a cleaner, non-dirt version.

Kaida continued to lapse in and out of consciousness, sleep a brutal mistress and a heavy weight on her eyelids. She distinctly felt something being wrapped around her, unmistaken in its warmth, a blanket. Did the girl put it on her? As she shifted beneath the covers, trying to discern what was happening, someone else's words flowed through her ears, as though it were covered in a thick seeping tar, a voice she could hardly hear. Perhaps she felt that way because Kaida didn't believe what the girl was saying.[break][break]

Kaida tried to devise what she meant. Was there someone else in the room that the girl was referring to? Someone else she couldn't sense? Was she talking about something else prior to the event in the forest? It must be that. It had to be.[break][break]

She doesn't know if she's been complimented like that before.[break][break]

The dragoness stirred with a pained grunt, senses coming back to her. Touch in the soft blanket that sat on her, hearing in the brilliant chirps of birds outside, taste in the dryness of her mouth from lack of hydration, and finally, sight in the form of the girl undressing in front of her. Wait, what?[break][break]

Kaida hasn't been set on fire before, but if she had to describe it, perhaps this is what it was like. Her skin, usually so cold and frozen felt like someone had poured boiling liquid gold onto it, nerves shot and ablaze all at once. She froze and tried to move at the same time— she was disrespecting someone's privacy by a remarkable degree, should she try and gouge her eyes out to avoid seeing it? Or maybe just close her eyes or look away to avoid eye contact, what a stupid idea— does she make a run for it, or stay put? What does she do? Why is the girl even doing that in the first place? Why isn't she making a move to do anything?[break][break]

Before the girl can fully reveal herself, Kaida whipped around with possibly the most reddest, tomato-coloured face known to man, and proceeded to try and wrench the window open to jump out of it.[break][break]

Honestly, it seemed like the only viable option to her.
