Grocery day!

Gabriel’s pantry was empty. With how busy he’s been recently, any food leftover produce had spoiled and been subsequently tossed into the trash. Considering he usually got his snacks spur of the moment, it left him with a very obvious mission. And for once, it didn’t have to do with his job at Ouros!

He goes. He grabs the goods. He gets in line. Everything is going according to plan. His stomach starts rumbling as he thinks about the giant dinner he’s going to make for himself. But before he can ring up his goods…

A ruckus.

Oh no. Gabriel lets out a deep, defeated sigh. I’m SO hungry…

“Everyone put your heads down!” A man presses a knife to a bystander's neck. “I want all the goddamn money in that register.”

“Great,” Gabriel mutters, slipping his hand into his pocket. Without looking, he tries to text Iphi in hopes of backup. “Maybe a license isn’t such a bad idea.”

The phone vibrated in her pocket while leaving a family diner and Jo took a second to crack her neck before checking her phone.

"I gotta say it may look a little odd to go to these places alone, but ya just can't beat the deal on the food these places always have."

She smiled while taking her phone out of her pocket before her eyes narrowed at the message. Okay, this was a little of a head-scratcher, on the one side this was definitely a problem. However, it was one knife... surely squirrely should be able to handle that right?

On second thought, never mind.

After a quick text, she was on her way and waiting for him to send his location. For now, she simply started moving towards the one grocer she remembered people always talking about, surely that could be the one. Plus if she was wrong she could head to the sky and get there in a minute or two.

[CHIRP ♪♪]

No one did anything.

At most, they looked around. They looked desperately at each other. They looked at their groceries. They looked through the windows outside, praying for a hero. But there wasn’t a hero. The closest thing they got was Gabriel sending a message to Ouros. The closest thing they had were the few, brave souls looking at the man, the knife, and the cashier. The closest thing they had to a hero, now, was letting things play out as they were.

None of them could do anything.

One move and someone died. Yet again, Gabriel was here confronted with a murderer and an inability to do a goddamned thing. Almost twenty years and he’s as helpless as ever. And there’ll be blood on his hands for his cowardice.

“Hey.”

Everyone turned. The brave, the cowards, and the criminal. They were all looking at Gabe.

“Let me help.”

People were more confused than ever.

“At this rate, you’re never gonna get out of here in time. You get what? A few thousand bucks? Let’s open up a few more machines.” Gabriel started moving on his own. The proposition was so absurd it bought him time. He skipped the line and went to the cashier next to him. “Open this damn thing up.” By this point, the back of his head was toward the man, allowing him to mouth the next few words.

I’ll save them. And then a few words for himself alone. What the hell am I thinking?

Well, now Jo found herself heading to a grocery store to deal with some hootenanny that had been stirred up by the squirrel. Scratch that she couldn't entirely blame him, at least not yet. Maybe happened to be a man of circumstance and found himself in unfortunate situations.

Yeah, that could be the case, I mean let's be real here. She of all people couldn't exactly NOT believe in crazy circumstances considering everything that had gone on in her life.

Besides, when JoJo first started swinging towards her destination, she had someone leave a tip to the police. It's better to give herself a time limit on handling these things rather than not telling the proper authorities. Surely Squirrely probably already had a plan going on with the ongoing situation.

Landing on the roof of the store, she leaned close to a window and looked inside to get a lay of the...

Jo really hated that squirrel.

[CHIRP ♪♪]

Gabriel walked up to the man, money bags in hand — an attempt to appease and de-escalate the situation. While he was an accomplice at the moment, when they went out to the parking lot, he could wrestle the knife out of the man’s hand. Maybe even deck him in the schnozz while he was at it, too.

But things went from bad to worse.

“C’mon, let’s get out of here.” He offered the man the bag of money, hoping that he’d let go of the hostage. And luckily for him… he did.

“Do you think I’m fucking dumb?” The man took a wild swing at Gabriel, who would have ducked out of the way if not for the cashier within range of the slash. He pushed them out of the way and into the arms of a few people to the side. Then, as he moved backward in tandem, he received a gnarly gash to the arm as he tripped backward over a handbasket.

Crap, crap, crap!

Not his best showing so far. He needed to think quickly. The man was aiming a vital stab towards his neck and he had nowhere to go.

Okay, Jo said she hated the guy, not that she wanted the guy brutally murdered in front of civilians and to give another reason for the general public to embrace therapy.

Clearly whatever the plan was had sunk and it was time to intervene for better or worse. Thankfully, she had a clear view of Squirrel Boy from the window. A clot of hair the size of a baseball popped out of her hand like popcorn whilst the suit from before covered the rest of her face.

A feeling of guilt stretched down her back seeing the guy get slashed and drawn blood. Likely if she wasn't busy mocking she probably could've knocked this guy out already.

With a wind back of her arm she sent the ball flying through the window and straight to the attacker's arm. Unfortunately, if she had gone for the head she'd likely pop it or leave a hole with how hard she had to throw to get it there to help out squirrely.

A broken arm or busting it completely was whatever to her, odds are there's someone with a quirk out there that would be able to restore the bastard attacking squirrel...

After their rehabilitation sentence of course.

An opening!

Gabriel wasn’t sure what the hell hit his arm, but the criminal cried out as his bones snapped. He dropped the knife to the ground, unwilling to bear the pain searing through his biceps. He looked through the shattered window at the person outside, their face covered in some weird, freakish mask. A moment later, he’d find himself laid out on the ground.

His jaw was in pain now, too. With a knife in one hand and bruised knuckles in the other, Gabriel gritted his teeth. The man was knocked out cold. With a deep exhale he walked over to one of the cashiers — notably not the hostage — and placed the knife in front of them.

“Hope you’re not a criminal, too.” Gabe winked before looking at the broken glass. What a liar he was, because he recognized that face (sort of) but what were the odds of them running into each other again? Especially now, when he had left that life behind him. “Uh, thanks for the help? Where’s Iphi?”

Gabe set them up for failure, but he had his alibi. And goddamn did he need it!

Okay, so looks like the general public here was going to be embracing therapy either way with that snap of the perpetrator's bone during the impact. Okay, not exactly what Jo wanted but hell it was either that or, ya know Squirrely dying and the guy dying was not the better choice.

Regardless of the slight appeal that it had for some reason.

Listening to his words and seeing that one little wink almost made her throw another ball, but let's be real. Between the fella on the ground and some of the damage on Squirrely himself, she likely had done enough today.

"Iphi?" The only word that came outta her mouth and she forgot to speak in that broken puberty voice. Realizing her mistake, the voice came out strong and clear to hopefully fool everyone else inside the building.

"I dunno no Iphi, but it looks like these people are safe and police will soon be on the way to deal with that troublemaker on the floor. So I suggest that everyone head outta this place for now and ya know don't take anything ya didn't pay for, odds are they'll catch ya on the camera and that would be a real stupid thing to explain next time ya need cola."

When Jo was nervous the words came spewing out. Lord did they come spewing out at that moment. The last thing that was needed was her regular voice getting out and eventually getting traced back to her... it's not crazy if they have the technology to do it.

Dang it!

Cops were on the way; thus, the vigilante needed to skidaddle.

They didn’t know who Iphi was — fair enough — but it let him know he wasn’t at risk either. If Peacekeeper were tracking him, considering her suspicious appearance, then Gabe might be at risk. For what? Who the hell knows! But you don’t exactly want a hairy stalker following you, y’know?

As they took their leave, Gabriel showed off his credentials. He was a detective for Ouros, he gathered all the money and returned it to the cashiers as the manager stepped onto the floor, and people resumed their day. Albeit, a bit scared. Now, to deal with the cops. With how he dealt with the aftermath, he hoped the suspicious play caught on camera would… make sense? If anything, the immobilized criminal should hopefully get him out of that bind, too.

The kicker? It was all self-defense! The bad guy swung first. And then a vigilante — or unknown hero, working in the shadows, as he’d tell the cops, came and bailed him out of a tough spot.

Only thing…

Their voice…

Was I saved by a teenager??
