He loves drama, banter, and being the most unserious person imaginable. Deflection is one of his core tenants. Gabe intentionally treats things with a certain joviality to undermine people's attempts at getting to know him, being vulnerable, or otherwise riling them up. Kill them with kindness in the most annoying way possible.
Plus, he never grew out of the 'knows everything at 15' disease. Symptoms include pretentiousness, undue stubbornness, an unjustified ego, and a penchant for looking down on others with different perspectives. Give him a creative outlet and he thinks of himself as the next Scorsese. His magnum opus will finish the world... if he ever gets started on the damn thing. Constantly distracted by other, smaller projects and the overwhelming pressure of living up to his own expectations, he's hesitant to get started. And like hell, he'll be honest about it.

This was literally hell. Gabriel had gone to his most absurd, impractical idea as a means of disrespect towards Retsu and her way of thinking. But instead of putting her in her place, letting her know how little he thought of her, he stuck the landing. She wanted a flamethrower knife. An absurd idea whose effects were better replicated by a plethora of different tools yet was, unfortunately, part of his repertoire. This is exactly the kind of flashy bullshit that audiences — Gabe included — loved. “Make it?” He looks over the schematic. Pulling out his phone, he snaps a picture of it. And more importantly, Retsu’s fingers — it’s just enough for his quirk. “I’ll fix it.” There were ways to optimize the product that the creator, whoever it was, overlooked. They had a base understanding of how things worked but didn’t have the years of practical, on-set experience to see what would last in a real fight. “Three days.” He gets up. “It’ll find you.” THREE DAYS LATER A little black box with a ribbon mysteriously appears somewhere very important to her. When she opens it, she’ll find her little blade and a love note from her one and only. It’s a picture of a bird blushing doing those little uwu finger-pointing inward things. To my one true love.

Gabriel was no stranger to pyrotechnics. As a practical effects purist, it was one of the first fields he tackled. While CGI had gotten to a point where it was indistinguishable from reality, you couldn’t replicate the qualia of the event — the actors responding to something real and life-threatening in front of them. Still, there was a pit in his stomach. He knew he had to save his own life for the sake of a greater cause but to directly put people in harm’s way? No, not exactly. A gun or some bombs were deadlier than anything he could replicate with fire alone. His mind flashed a few ideas. What would Retsu want with pyrotechnics? She didn’t seem the type to care for dramatic entrances. He was broaching the limits of his knowledge as he fabricated complex ideas that would align with her tastes. “What…” The answer was so simple. It wasn’t an oversight made by professionals alone. Gabriel needed to be dumber. “You want, like, a flamethrower knife or something?” Gabriel braced himself for whatever her damned request was.

Rhetorical or otherwise, he was growing tired of the conversation. At this point, they were rooted in their ways and beliefs, and he was reaching the limit of his quirk through one viewing. It was time to put the cards on the table. “You got the sob story because we’re on a cute little date,” His eyes drift to the firearm. “And because of that gun of yours. Which leads me to my final question…” “Being a criminal feels like being a detective — bureaucracy everywhere. To get anything done, you need to make a deal.” Necessary preamble, if wordy. “I’m cashing in all of my chips.” Gabe pantomimes in kind. “I make shit. So, what do I have to make you leave with my life? A better gun? A new eye? A robot boyfriend?”

“Laugh,” Gabe says. “Retsu would laugh.” Good to know directing wasn’t his only talent. As skeptical a person as she was, Jun believed his performance. The only thing between Gabriel and his acting career was a few warrants for his arrest. That and a former classmate standing at the entrance of the alleyway. The last thing Gabe needed was getting Jun caught up in his mess — even if she saved his skin. “It was a bluff.” The best lies were rooted in truth. And even if she fact-checked him, it’d be too late. They would have gone their separate ways. “I’m an undercover detective for Ouros.” He puts his finger to his lips before donning his mask. “Our little secret,” He says. “But you can’t get caught in the middle of this. Too much bureaucracy.” He’d offer her a smile if he could. Instead, he changes the framing of his lenses, smiling through those. “We’ll catch up soon.” He started searching the bodies, making himself look busy — as if he were supposed to be here. Time was short. Heroes could arrive at any moment. They usually patrolled this area, the skirmish taking place shortly after they had left, taking advantage of time’s linearity. He doubts the criminals will escape, but if they do, then it’s the least of his worries. If Peacemaker was caught killing them on camera, it would have been the end of her vigilante career. Bad enough there’s footage of her working alongside Ghouligan, ruining her reputation as is. “I don’t know what’s going on with Samson,” With JoJo unconscious, Gabriel spoke to himself. If he’s lucky, some of this will seep into her unconsciousness. “But this is not my problem. I hope you fix your shit before you get back out there.” He’d eventually drive her to a friend’s house. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a bus to use as cover, only the dented van that had given Gabriel enough leeway to avoid a fatal blow from Samson. Even if it was meant to knock him out, the man was frailer than a demon like that could understand. “Look buddy,” Gabriel presses the gas, hoping to drag the pair with them. By this point, the police must be on their way and the criminals are bound to get captured, even if they happen to get a few bucks in their burlap sacks before promptly returning it. “We’re gonna have a nice long talk…” He drives off, setting his zappy hand to fatal. If it’s just the hair… He thinks to himself. Frying it shouldn’t hurt JoJo. All he needed was the girl sitting safely in the car so that she wouldn’t get run over in the process. God forbid the current catches her in the crossfire.

While Jun focused on the other, a wholly incompetent criminal in their own right, Gabriel was dealing with his own bundle of failure. The man offered him a hand up as he balanced against the wall so he wouldn’t find himself on the ground. “If we don’t help, she’s gonna kick all of our asses.” He looked at their body on the ground, writhing in pain from the strike that knocked them overhead and past both of them. “We can settle our beef after this… who knows… maybe we can… cut a deal or something.” They’re nervous. They don’t want to go to jail. He’s a low-level crook with aspirations of wealth and women and power. “Now get your ass up!” Gabriel takes his hand. “Sorry,” Gabriel tazed him and he’s on the ground, too. He lets out a deep breath. It’s him versus Jun, except Jun doesn’t even realize what’s happening. He takes off his mask. “Jun,” He says. “You’ve gotta get out of here.”

Great. Gabriel was up to speed. But his up-to-speed was different than most people’s. Not only did he learn of the second person inside of JoJo’s head — in both a metaphorical and literal sense, considering it’s actually her hair — but he had seen Samson’s thoughts, too. Considering he had a full view of the camera, he could pick and choose who he wanted to see. And with what was going on internally, JoJo might want to get out of there before Samson’s rebellious streak caused more trouble than it was worth. Gabriel put the van in drive and went to the front of the bank. The men inside saw it as an emergency exit— destroying a pillar was above their pay grade. They had guns but people with that kind of strength had incredible durability, too. They were not getting caught. As they retreated, one hung back to shoot at JoJo, buying them time. The other found a door slammed in their face, only to be grabbed by Chirp and tased on the ground. He then provoked Samson, hoping to save the last man’s life. “Don’t kill him,” Chirp yelled, emphasizing the demon’s name. “ Samson.”
