“C’mon, guys,” Chirp steps into the alley with an outstretched hand. He makes a series of three gestures and sparks fly from the sleeve on his arm. It’s set to stun. And judging by the looks on their faces, they’re ill-prepared for his kind of company. “You know this isn’t your turf.”

Chirp has no idea whether or not this is their turf. But the way they skulk around the alleyways, carrying something they try to keep hidden, and the way they jumped when he caught them in the middle of whatever it was they were doing, alerted him not only to their naivete but to the situation a whole.

He didn’t need to be Sherlock.

They look at each other warily, before whispering a few words to each other.

“There’s two of us…”

“There’s two of us! One of him!”

“We can take him?”

“We can take him!”

Their body language changes as they open the box. Gabriel can’t quite make it out, but that doesn’t stop him from bluffing further.

“Do you know what’ll happen if Retsu finds out you killed me?” His bird mask winked. “If you would be so lucky.”

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Jun was still in her slump. Tired, irritable, self-conscious more than usual, whole nine yards. And like so many times in the past she heard voices down an alleyway on her way home from work. With how jaded she was, she was more than willing to let someone else deal with this particular problem tonight; it might have been out of character, but she was tired and she was still in the process of dealing with life and her own issues. And then she heard: "Do you know what’ll happen if Retsu finds out you killed me?" She paused, processing. Does he mean Bakiriretsu? The psycho that's managed to kill or injure a bunch of heroes and cops lately? She wanted to let it go, but the nagging feeling in her chest told her to turn and offer no quarter. Setting her bag at the entrance of the alley, she stepped in and shouted, "Hey! All you poozers! Put your weapons down and surrender!" Oh jeez. She was not confident at all tonight, and she may as well be signing her own death order. CHIRP ♪♪

“Jun?” Gabriel says aloud. Crap. If she didn’t recognize the mask, then she might have not realized it was him. And even if a little research after the fact would have revealed his identity, it would have been better than dealing with the consequences of an awkward conversation. If they made it out of this alive.

Quickly, he pivots.

“It’s a three-on-one now, fellas. We’re all against her, aren’t we? We can’t let a hero get in the way of our squabble, right?” They aren’t too bright and fall for the gambit.

“Y-yeah!

“Screw a hero!”

They charge past Chirp and make their first strike on Jun. But as the one on the left trips over Gabriel’s foot, he stumbles before catching himself.

“Hey, man, what the fuck?”

“Sorry, I’m pigeon-toed.”

“What’s that even mean??”

“It means I’m distracting you.”

The second took a wide swing of that secret thing covered in a wrapped cloth, hiding the object underneath. But with the weight, one can presume it’s heavy enough to crush a skull.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Jun took a half step back, making herself seem vulnerable but in reality it was a way for her to get into position. "Three on one? That's hardly fair!" Her rings glowed, attempting to tap into her determination so she could maybe end the fight without throwing a punch. "You should have brought more guys!" As the first began his charge she pondered why he wasn't backing down; a naval gun should have formed behind her. Except when she looked back all that was there was a floating anchor on a chain. Of all times for my emotions to go out of wack... She turned back in time to duck under the blow, reaching behind her to grab the chain and yank the anchor forward, intending to slam it into the guy's midsection and send him flying. The other two seemed preoccupied; she guessed they had squared off. She did walk into what she perceived to be a territory squabble. Maybe she could get all three all the streets tonight...maybe. CHIRP ♪♪

While Jun focused on the other, a wholly incompetent criminal in their own right, Gabriel was dealing with his own bundle of failure. The man offered him a hand up as he balanced against the wall so he wouldn’t find himself on the ground.

“If we don’t help, she’s gonna kick all of our asses.” He looked at their body on the ground, writhing in pain from the strike that knocked them overhead and past both of them. “We can settle our beef after this… who knows… maybe we can… cut a deal or something.” They’re nervous. They don’t want to go to jail. He’s a low-level crook with aspirations of wealth and women and power. “Now get your ass up!”

Gabriel takes his hand.

“Sorry,” Gabriel tazed him and he’s on the ground, too. He lets out a deep breath. It’s him versus Jun, except Jun doesn’t even realize what’s happening. He takes off his mask. “Jun,” He says. “You’ve gotta get out of here.”

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... First guy down, and looking down she saw that the bird guy managed to take out a second. One on one...this was going to be simple. And as she squared up, trying to sort out her own trainwreck of her emotions, she began to move forward, intending to land a haymaker on this masked son of a- "Gabe?!" She put on the brakes just in time, skidding to the stop as she scowled up at him. She had heard about his arrest and subsequent breakout. To a higher extent, she wanted to slap him silly next time she saw him, but this...this was outright weird. "What are you doing here? What's with the mask? And the guys? And, I dunno, working with a mass murderer?!" She was having trouble accessing her emotions before, but now she seemed to have a good enough goal to make them do what she needed them to do. CHIRP ♪♪

“Laugh,” Gabe says. “Retsu would laugh.”

Good to know directing wasn’t his only talent. As skeptical a person as she was, Jun believed his performance. The only thing between Gabriel and his acting career was a few warrants for his arrest. That and a former classmate standing at the entrance of the alleyway. The last thing Gabe needed was getting Jun caught up in his mess — even if she saved his skin.

“It was a bluff.” The best lies were rooted in truth. And even if she fact-checked him, it’d be too late. They would have gone their separate ways. “I’m an undercover detective for Ouros.” He puts his finger to his lips before donning his mask.

“Our little secret,” He says. “But you can’t get caught in the middle of this. Too much bureaucracy.” He’d offer her a smile if he could. Instead, he changes the framing of his lenses, smiling through those.

“We’ll catch up soon.”

He started searching the bodies, making himself look busy — as if he were supposed to be here. Time was short. Heroes could arrive at any moment. They usually patrolled this area, the skirmish taking place shortly after they had left, taking advantage of time’s linearity. Without finding much of anything, he feigned disappointment. Gabriel looked back, hoping Jun would heed his warning.

[attr="class","bmsk"] in blackest night... Jun just stared at him, dumbfounded. "What?!" There was...so much that she didn't understand. Too much, in fact. But he was in a weird position, and her being her put her in a weird position, and the fact that Gabe said he was working with Ouros just further added to her confusion. She was interning there, so...she didn't know. Maybe she could ask Recall-senpai about all this. Regardless, if there was a level of danger than Jun couldn't just interact with Gabe all willy-nilly. So, in her worst possible performance yet, she yelled out, "You're not going to get away with this!" Before taking off back the way she came, confused and annoyed. She didn't like Gabe, and found him annoying, but...when it came to the job, she could at least try and be professional. She just hoped it didn't get him killed. CHIRP ♪♪,
