It was a new thing the school was doing, mystery sparring opponents. The idea being you didn't get any prep time, but only got to see who you were facing moments before the sparring match started. It was meant to simulate the real world, and how as heroes they could never be prepared for what kind of villains or vigilantes society might throw at them. It made sense to her, quirks were so varied in their substance and expression that one couldn't possibly be ready for anything and everything. Sometimes you had to adapt on the fly.

Well, whoever got her sure lucked out, or was unlucky, depending on how they would look at it. As a quirkless student she probably wasn't much of an opponent to most, but she had been honing her fighting skills and training more lately, so she was going to give it her all regardless. She didn't have a hero suit yet, so she had shown up in her UAU sports wear, gotta represent the school even though they were on school grounds! She had also tied her gray hair back in a ponytail so that it wouldn't get in the way. Naturally, she had her trusted bat, BBB by her side too. She wasn't expecting this fight to be an easy one regardless of opponent. Something she had learned in the last couple of months since joining hero school was that nothing was ever easy around here. Taking to her side of the barren PE training grounds, Freja stood and waited for her opponent to arrive.

He wasn't really much in the mood for things, but being part of the faculty meant he had to keep doing thing he was being told to do, otherwise he would break his curriculum and get thrown back in a cell. And as much as doing stupid chores was boring, it certainly was less boring than jail. It was almost ironic how he was still forced to fight other poeple after he left his life in the undeground behind. Years back he was still there fighting for his life and for a chance to see his father again, but alas... being the son of a wanted super secretive crime boss villain wasn't exacly roses and rainbows. "Alright so, I'm not really in the mood, so if you like... give up you'll be doing both of us a favor." Leonard told the other lady. It wasn't the first time he offered his oppoent to surrender. He wasn't going to, because doing so was clearly a sign of weakness, but not many people wanted to fight with "Little Devil" and his deadly quirk, so most time he just slapped them around a couple of times and called it a day. "You don't really have much to prove anyway no?" Leonard would add, stopping a few paces away, facing his would-be opponent.

Her opponent didn't exactly look like a beaming ray of sunshine, but she couldn't blame him. Maybe he was nervous too and just had a lot on his mind? It was odd. She had survived encounter after encounter with villains and yet she always felt nervous when she had to face off against other students. Maybe it was because she knew they weren't bad people? ''Huh?'' She had to do a double take and make sure she actually heard him right. Give up??

''What do you mean? That would ruin the point of the exercise. There's no way I'll improve if I give up.'' She had never been asked if she wanted to surrender before. Usually it was either a fair sparring match, or a one-sided fight against bullies who were all too eager to use their powers against a quirkless opponent. Upon taking a closer look she realized she had seen him somewhere... Wasn't he also present for the bomb exercise a while back? She distinctly remembered him as one of the students that came off as more intimidating than anything else. Just her luck.

''Much to prove? I have everything to prove.'' Hers was a constant uphill battle, it couldn't be helped when her lack of powers made her an anomaly in the hero course. ''I'm sorry you're not really in the mood, but I can't back down. I need to become stronger.'' She relaxed the grip on her bat a little. ''I'm Freja, by the way. Freja Helt, first year. What's your name?''

It was then that the white haired boy jumped up, the moment he heard something reeling in. There was a wire or some thing attached to the weapon, was she trying to hook him up on a fishing line? Did she think he would be that stupid? "Oh, so you're the sneaky kind of slippery little shits." Leonard grumbled, creating a globe of dark that he would then lob in the air. If she really wanted to fight him then he would not hold anything back. First order of business, the glob in the air would explode in a shower of spikes, much like a grenade made of needles. Another two would be thrown, with the express intention of having the girl dodge into the black sludge on the floor, where it could shoot up in the form of shadowy hands and trap her like a big glue trap. "Something tells me I shouldn't get close to that weird contraption you wave around. Real go go gadget pain in my ass." Leonard would add, taking mental note that at the moment he had a clear advantage from someone wielding a melee weapon. He was now sure there would be some other kind of mechanisms in there that could make his life very annoying.

''Duds?'' She furrowed her brow. ''I'm not a dud. I'm a hero student just like you.'' She could only assume the black bodysuit which he summoned so casually had to do with his quirk. Wait, was she just glossing over the fact that he said cage matches? Just where did this guy come from that they organized cage matches for people, quirked or not to fight in? She had no time to question him as the field was covered in this same dark matter next. Shadows? Some kind of energy? It couldn't be good news for her that it was spreading so quickly.

''I won't know unless I try.'' She was trying her best to appear confident, but she had to admit her prospects weren't looking good right now. Then again, what would she accomplish from just surrendering now? Nothing. She might learn something from fighting Leo, but she risked learning nothing and maybe even questioning her place in this hero system if she simply didn't take up the fight. ''Is that so?'' Lacked the time, huh? She would be the judge of that. Readying her bat, she was about to take a step forward when she looked down again. She flinched and quickly retracted her foot upon seeing the spikes. She wasn't about to lose her motivation because of one match, hell no! A quick glance around her told her getting up close to him by running would be pretty much impossible, and the shadowy hands were fast approaching on her position too. With little time to think she arrived at a fast solution, thankfully she was good at thinking on her feet and very proficient in wielding and aiming her weapon.

She was going to try to thread the needle.

Spinning her bat around once, she pointed the tip at Leonard before pressing the mechanism to fire a grappling hook at him, aiming to try and hit him with a ranged attack, rather than predictably run up to him and hit her feet on the spikes, or risk getting caught by the hands before she could even land her first hit.
