“Search and rescue isn’t always dealing with environmental factors. Sometimes you will also need to handle an active Villain threat while trying to find and retrieve civilians. You’re going to work in pairs today to navigate through a simulation based on this premise. Upperclassmen will be playing Villain threats and civilians that require rescue. They will not make it easy on you. Your actions will be monitored throughout the dome.”

The professor addressed the class in front of the Unforeseen Simulation Joint rather than one of the normal lecture halls. Practical lessons for the Heroics course couldn’t exactly be held in a classroom, after all. Momo was excited for a chance to do some hands-on activities. Especially when it came to rescue since that was her focus.

She bounced in place, her energy and enthusiasm obvious as pairs were assigned. Somehow, she was last. Not that she minded. In fact, she even interjected right before her assignment, “Saving the best for last, right?!” The professor elected to ignore that and proceeded with the partnering.

“Aimoto, you’re with Tanaka.”

It was obvious since they were the last two left, but Momo had never met the other student before and since the teacher had used their surnames, it was time for a proper introduction. Momo trotted over to him and bowed. “Hi! I’m Aimoto Momo! It’s nice to meet you!” Then a light bulb went off over her head. Not literally, of course. Though in a world filled with Quirks, anything was technically possible. The shift in her features did give away, quite obviously too, that Momo had a realization. She was in her Hero costume, which meant she could give her future Hero name too.

“Though you can call me Red Girl while we’re on the job!”

It was a brand new day at U.A University and Kaito was ready for whatever challenge they would have to do that day. He was very much hoping it wouldn’t be another boring day and that he would be able to do something fun. Even if it was a day that they wouldn’t be using their quirks, he wanted to be able to put all of his energy somewhere. That was one of the many problems of being so energetic, he hated sitting still or standing for that matter. They were standing in front of USJ.[break][break]

Kaito looked up at the professor who was talking about Search and Rescue information which was cool and all but Kaito was ready for the practical aspect. He didn’t have to wait long though since the professor was going there. The professor spoke of how Search and Rescue wasn’t all about environmental factors and that sometimes there was a villain threat. This was right up Kaito’s alley. In this simulation, he was going to go up against some Upperclassmen and that brought a grin to his face. Excitement jolted through his body as the professor started pairing off people.[break][break]

Being called last with someone named Aimoto, Kaito looked around and saw her moving over to him. She bowed and he did the same out of respect. She introduced herself formally. She was Aimoto Momo or really Momo Aimoto. Japan had a weird way of using last names first but it would only be weird to an outsider. Before he could introduce himself, she added on more to her introduction, telling him that he could refer to her as Red Girl while in the field. Judging by her hero costume and that last addition, Red Girl was the hero name she chose which was cool. “Nice to meet you, Aimoto. I am Tanaka Kaito but my prospective hero name is ThunderCell.”[break][break]

Kaito smiled before it hit him. He didn’t have a hero suit. He was wearing the standard gym uniform. Heck, he didn’t even have a hero suit made yet. Things were kind of hard back home so he didn’t really put time into saving for such a thing. Well, once he started earning, that would be one of the first things he would invest in since he wouldn’t want to look underprepared. [break][break]

“My quirk is called Voltage, which you can probably guess that I use electricity. With my quirk, I can generate, conduct, and discharge electrical currents at will. I use that to either throw it like lightning or enhance my physical abilities. What can you do, Red? Mind if I call you Red?” Kaito was already ready to turn the class into a competition on who can do the course faster and to do that he needed to be one his S+ game. He also would need to know how his partner’s quirk worked.

Kaito was assuming a lot about Momo if he thought she could figure out what his Quirk did by name alone. Momo happened to be a little more oblivious than the name was obvious. Lucky for her, he was willing to explain it. Speaking of lucky though…

“That’s so cool!”

Momo clapped her hands together excitedly. Her big blue eyes radiated with genuine awe over hearing about his Quirk. She loved the flashy ones. Her own was sort of flashy, but in a way that made people that didn’t like insects and bugs uncomfy.

“I just summon ladybugs that bring me good luck!”

Momo had no idea how her Quirk actually worked. She had yet to put two-and-two together that the ladybugs zapped energy from whatever she was concerned about to give her a boost where she needed it most. The spotted beetles of fortune just showed up and Momo did better than she’d do without them.

“And you can totally call me Red!”

Yes! My first nickname!

Clearly she and Kaito were already halfway to being the best of friends. At least in Momo’s mind. She’d settle for nothing less, even though Kaito’s focus was on being good partners for the challenge ahead. Momo knew they would be in heart. Everything always worked out for her. That’s what the ladybugs were for.

“We’re going to be an awesome tag team,” she declared as she practically bounced toward the USJ entrance. Then she stopped. She remembered something. Around her waist was the yo-yo with which she used to fight and move around.

“I can also give people a little zap with my yo-yo!” That was probably important information for Kaito to know if he was curious about what she could do. “Or heat ‘em up! Or chill them out!” It was a handy piece of equipment from Sovereign Technologies, though Momo had yet to really make use of it. Besides learning neat tricks and practicing poses like one of her favorite Heroes, Vox. Which she demonstrated now after pulling it free from where it was tied up.

It clearly still needed some work.

Kaito had explained his quirk to Aimoto and she seemed really excited about it while calling it cool. He too had such an expression when his mom told him that the quirk he was given was very similar to his late father’s quirk. That inspired him more to follow in his dad’s footsteps, at least the being a hero part since no one wanted to die.[break][break]

When he extended the question to her on her quirk, she told him that she summoned ladybugs that brought her good luck. That was… interesting. Did it really bring her good luck? Did it take the good luck away from others? He needed more than that but maybe that was as much as she understood about it. ”That sounds like a really great power if I ever heard one. Well, let’s put that good luck to the grinder and do great today!” and now there was a grin on his face.[break][break]

She also approved of him calling her Red. This was great. Red was shorter to call than Red Girl and it fitted well. Nicknames also familiarized people better and that may boost their morale and rapport. He was glad that she didn’t mind the nickname as well since it showed that she was friendly, at least that was his interpretation of things.[break][break]

As they moved towards the USJ together, she expressed her declaration of them being an awesome tag team which Kaito also felt was going to happen. He nodded and flashed an excited grin before she went on to speak on her yo-yo and the things she could do with it. It was crazy that she had access to three elements with the thing. Now he felt really underprepared. No hero suit, no cool gadget, just him in normal clothes. Well, that meant that he had to be enough and he was going to show just that, He had everything he needed inside. [break][break]

”That’s a really neat gadget of yours! I’m sure it’s going to be very useful in the trials ahead. Now let’s show these upperclassmen what we freshmen can do!” With a confident look on his face, Kaito entered the USJ ready to see what challenges lay ahead. [break][break]

As they entered the USJ, the full view of all the zones came into view. Kaito started looking around the area to get an idea where the villains would be. Sure, this was a Search and Rescue mission but it was also an active villain scene. If they wanted to find and save the civies then their best bet would be to find and take out the villains, wouldn't it? At least, that was what he believed. ”Let me know if you see any villains. I think that would be the best place to start in finding the civilians and saving them.”

Kaito was easy to get along with. Then again, Momo got along with most everyone. Either way, Momo continued to bounce along next to him happy as could be until they got inside the USJ. Then she put on her game face.

It looked exactly like her happy face.

“Look for civilians and check for Villains, got it!”

She was content to take orders from Kaito even though he was as much of a newbie as she was. Momo had never said she was the brains of any operation. Not that she was exactly the muscle either. Luck and a yo-yo were pretty much all she brought to the table, but she was bound and determined to make that work!

It wasn’t long before cries could be heard coming from The Ruins Zone. Momo pointed in the direction of the mini-city that was half rubble. “Over there!” If Kaito had ears, he had already heard it too, even without Momo pointing out the obvious.

Speaking of Momo doing dumb things, she immediately bolted in the direction of the voices. She may or may not have already forgotten the other element of the challenge. All that was in her head was rescuing the people in fake danger with an urgency that might make someone wonder if Momo had been tricked by the realism of the training ground and had also forgotten the danger was, you know, fake.

Now that they had a pretty good idea of what each other could do, they made their way inside the USJ. Kaito figured that their best bet would be where the villains were since they would be able to possibly find hostages there. As he brought this to Red, she jumped on board with the plan. A team that had a singular solid plan was sure to have more success than a team who couldn’t agree on the path of their actions.[break][break]

Now that they had decided what they were going to do, it was time to begin their search. Luckily for them, that wouldn’t take long as a loud cry could be heard. Red even pointed it out in the event that the thunderer didn’t hear, even though he very much did. Without any sort of time passing, Red took off in the direction of the cry and man was she quick in doing so. ThunderCell started running after her, trying to catch up before she jumped into the danger and did something stupid.[break][break]

Where the cry came from was a big muscular guy who tossed the source of the cry into the group of other hostages. She was now silenced with a cloth gag. The guy moved a little ways away from where the hostages were being kept, leaving a few of his partners there to keep watch. His bright idea was if they were to be discovered by any hero wannabes then his best bet would be to have them chase him and lead them away from where the hostages were being held.[break][break]

Though, he wasn’t going to be alone. One of his partners was going to tag along. She looked like a no nonsense kind of person. Her glare would put the fear of death into many. Without wasting any additional time, they got into a more visible area and in a different direction, They did have a plan though. The girl softened her expression and started running away with him giving chase to give the illusion that she needed to be rescued too.[break][break]

Meanwhile, ThunderCell kept up with Red. ”We should be getting close to the area where that scream came from. I think we should find cover and keep the element of surprise. Don’t want to give the enemy a big target.”

“Eh?! Cover?”

The thought had never occurred to Momo. In fact, no thoughts had occurred in her head during the sprint thus far. They had a goal and she was going to do it! But she wasn’t so inconsiderate as to completely ignore her partner’s input. So she slowed her mad dash into a jog and began to look around.

Ruins surrounded them. Some were in better shape than others. All bore design elements of traditional urban buildings for Japan. The architecture itself didn’t matter to, or even register with, Momo beyond the fact that they all had windows. Which weren’t great for cover, but were excellent for peeking. In Momo’s head that meant they needed a wall and a window. It was impressive logic for her.

“So we need a wall and a window!”

The direct pipeline from brain to mouth was still wide open. Momo pointed to a nearby building that had only partially collapsed. The first two floors were still intact so it had lots of walls and windows with the bonus of a higher vantage point of which Momo hadn’t thought of.

“What about over there?”

When Kaito suggested that they take cover so as to not reveal themselves to the enemy, Red’s response told him that she hadn’t even considered taking cover. Welp, now he knew just how she thought. She was all about the action and there wasn’t anything remotely wrong with that. There was going to be a time where that would be very important.[break][break]

As they approached the urban area that had ruins all around them, Kaito looked around for a perfect place that would shield them from the eyes of enemies. When Red asked if they needed a wall and a window, he nodded. ”Yeah, something that would allow us to peek out without being seen.”[break][break]

While looking at the various buildings around them, Red pointed out a place that had the perfect cover for them. ”That’s perfect! Let’s go.” He quickly hopped down from their elevated floor and moved stealthily to the building that Red had pointed out. It had partially fallen apart but that didn’t matter. What was most important was still there.[break]

As the hero duo got situated in the broken hero, the pretend villains were on the move nearby. Visually, they were trying to sell that the big guy was chasing the helpless girl. If anyone came out to play then they would be able to trick them well enough to take down some naive heroes. That was the best play in the book. They ended up passing close enough to Red Girl’s and ThunderCell’s position allowing the two heroes in training to see them.

Momo posted up in their newest base of operations next to Kaito. She had to cover her mouth with one hand to actively stifle a giggle. It was fun being stealthy, but letting her giddiness get the best of her would ruin that for both of them. Especially since the fake Villains were passing right by them now.

“What next,” Momo asked, her voice hushed into a low whisper. Her partner in anti-crime had already proven himself the brains of the operation, so unless something drastic happened, Momo was willing to follow his lead during such a tricky stage of the exercise. After all, if it weren’t for him, she probably would have charged in head first and gotten captured—and a big fat F on the assignment, which she absolutely did not want. Her grades were bad enough already.

Still, she wanted to help, so she offered what few ideas her brain had churned out all on its own in case they might fit with one of Kaito’s plans. Let it never be said that she was one of those people that made her teammates do all of the work on group projects. “I can act as a distraction for you and lead them away from the civilians or I can use my yo-yo to try and tie one of them up so we can deal with the others then we can go help the civilians, or… or…” That was it. That was all Momo had.

Now posted at the wall with the window in the partially fallen apart building, they were able to safely do surveillance. While Red was trying to muffle her giggles, TC - ThunderCell - was trying to see if he would be able to see anything of value and he certainly did. There was a woman running by and one of the villains chasing her. While keeping his eyes on them, he heard Red’s quiet question.[break][break]

Before he could answer, she started making suggestions. She had some solid ones too. Even so, they were more to see what he would be able to use with them than her being confident in her ability to brainstorm a big play. ”We need to separate them. I can take on the big guy to give you time to take the woman to safety. Once she’s safe, we can regroup and if I am still taking on big guy you can help me with your lucky powers.” He thought about it, a distraction would be good but simply having the element of surprise could be better. ”We need to be quiet on the approach and then once we are in the zone, we can work well. If you manage to get the woman to safety, then you can come back and use that Yo-Yo of yours. Let’s move before we lose the trail.”[break][break]

TC moved out of cover stealthily and started following the direction the fake villains went. It wouldn’t be long before they were close enough to engage. Channeling some electricity to his fist, he moved in to attack. TC managed to get close enough to land a punch on the big guy, decking him in the face. This caused the man to go flying into one of the buildings. ”Red, save the woman.”

Momo nodded along. Kaito’s plan was sound. Not that she’d be able to tell if it wasn’t! Either way, he seemed more sure of himself than she did of her own ideas and since Momo had designated him the brains of the operation, she was happy to hop on board. And hop she did as they split up, her jaunty dash made away from ThunderCell’s clash with the more obvious of the faux-foe.

“Hey! Wait up,” Momo called after the older student that was still running away from the scene. “I’m here to save you!” Momo used her most reassuring voice and everything! But still the woman ran and ran and ran until they were quite far from the other two—and quite far from Kaito being able to help Momo.

All at once, Momo’s civilian, who was clearly in desperate need of a rescue in her mind because clearly she was too scared to listen, abruptly halted in her tracks. Momo barely managed to skid to a stop herself and prevent a collision between them. “I’m not the one that needs saving,” the woman said with a smirk then reached out to grab Momo by one of her twintails.

“Owww,” Momo whined as the woman yanked on her hair. It was the least owww of what was to come. “You’re not a very good civilian, you know!” The woman snorted and almost laughed. “I’m not playing a civilian, you dunce.” Momo’s eyes got wide. Well, wider than normal.

“Oh! Oh no!”

Oh no indeed.

Red had decided to chase after the woman to ‘save’ her. This separation would provide TC the space to deal with Big Guy on his own without having to worry about collateral. Now it was him against the other him. Electricity vs Super-Strength, which would come out on top. ”Hope you brought the A game cause I’m going to make you fall like Goliath did.” Yeah, he needed to sit down and work on his one liners, they were pretty bad.[break][break]

The older student acting as a villain for the exercise chuckled before lunging at TC. He was much faster than he looked and that caused the young thunderer off guard. Unable to dodge in time, all the 1st year could do was bring his hand up to brace for the attack. That didn’t do much and he was sent flying into a wall. ”Damn, he’s strong.”[break][break]

Shrugging off the pain, ThunderCell got into a fighting stance. ”Alright, let’s do this.” Generating a ball of electricity, he threw it at Big Guy. Sure, it was the most obvious attack and that in itself was the point. Due to it being so obvious, it would also be the least obvious attack. Yeah, doesn’t make sense but it kinda does. He moved in to follow up, generating the charge to his fists. As Big Guy dodged the electric ball and prepared for a physical strike, ThunderCell pushed both fists forward and discharged the electrical charge. The shock hit BG but it was far from over.

Being flung by her hair was not something Momo ever wanted to repeat. Her whole scalp burned. It almost distracted from all the bumps and bruises she got from hitting the ground a few feet away and rolling to a stop. Almost. Unfortunately, everything ached as she got back up.

“That was cheating!”

“Do you really think Villains play fair?”

Momo’s brow furrowed. “No. I gu-” She wasn’t even through her reply before the other girl disappeared from sight. “What?!” She looked around for the girl, but saw nothing. After a few seconds of panic that maybe the girl got abducted by aliens out of the blue Momo felt something. A fist had collided with her face.

“Owww.”

The expression of pain was starting to become her catchphrase at this rate. Momo scrambled up just in time to narrowly avoid an invisible kick that had been aimed at her ribs. She felt the air woosh past her. “Hey, quit that!” Momo was practically pouting now, but pouting wasn’t going to stop her from getting hit again. She needed a plan. Granted, it was hard to think of one as she was on the receiving end of a trip while trying to scuttle away from her attacker. One that made Momo eat dirt again.

“Alright. That’s it! Time to get serious!”

Most people that were getting serious didn’t say it aloud.

Momo wasn’t most people.

Back and forth, blow for blow, sparks were everywhere. Being an older student, the big guy was stronger and more battle ready than Kaito. The young thunderer had his work cut out for him. Right now, he was flat on the floor. He had taken a punch that sent him flying into concrete which he fell to the floor. Jeez, he’s strong. I haven’t been up against someone like this… ever. I hope Red was able to get away and get the woman to safety. He pushed himself up and wiped blood that had found its way below his lip.[break][break]

”I ain’t out of the game yet.” TC stated as he got into a fighting stance. The big guy smirked. “Like your spunk, don’t go getting into fights you can’t win though cause we villains ain’t gonna be merciful.” BG rushed at TC and sent a quick jab towards his face. TC barely evaded the attack but in doing so it gave him the opportunity to counterattack.[break][break]

With the chance of countering the attack, ThunderCell brought electricity to his fists and drove his left into BG’s rib cage before sending the right towards the face. It was not as effective as he hoped it would have been. Big Guy blocked the attack to the face and grabbed his arm. Kaito was flung into a structure of concrete where he would lay flat. This was harder than he thought. He needed to gather his strength and try to outsmart his opponent. A straight up brawl wasn’t going anywhere. He coughed a bit and winced in pain.[break][break]

The big guy smirked and crossed his arms. “What’s the matter little here, ran out of juice? Think because you’re laying there looking helpless that I’ll hold back? Out there, villains will be relentless and won’t care about how beat up you get.” He marched over to where Kaito was lying and grabbed the boy by his hair, pulling him up before going to punch him.[break][break]

Being pulled by his hair was rather painful. He winced but he knew that wouldn’t stop the pain. Before BG could punch him, he discharged electricity quickly, zapping BG’s right eye which stunned him. He supercharged his fists and punched BG’s arm which made the older student let go of his hair. Now free, he jumped back to regain his composure.

THE RED GIRL

Momo pushed herself off the ground once again. The air around her began to glow before hundreds upon hundreds of ladybugs blinked into existence. She heard a scoff somewhere to her right followed by a mocking voice. “Unfortunately for you, I’m not afraid of bugs.” Momo pouted and shouted back in the direction of the voice.

“Well maybe you should be!”

Her ladybugs were actually relatively harmless, but harmless didn’t mean useless. Even as they swarmed around Momo in a massive cloud, energy began to flow unseen by any present. It connected Momo to the upperclassman, channeling the latter’s energy into Momo. She felt invigorated and more importantly, stronger.

Her eyes darted back and forth, looking for something just as unseen as the energy. Which would have been pointless if not for the ladybugs. Since they occupied space, getting close enough to hit Momo meant not just moving through the swarm, but actively displacing the ladybugs and in doing so, making it obvious where a person might be. So obvious, in fact, that Momo, queen of obliviousness, noticed when the other girl began moving through the ladybugs and toward her.

“Gotcha!”

Momo charged and tackled the girl, who let out a surprised grunt from both being caught and the unexpected force behind the contact. She fell backward, dragging Momo down with her. Given how easily she was able to throw Momo earlier, the faux-Villain expected the physical struggle to go her way. Surprise turned to shock when she discovered it wouldn’t be so easy this time. Unbeknownst to her, the ladybugs were leeching her strength and giving it to Momo who managed to pin the girl’s arms to the ground after a few seconds of intense struggling and flailing on both ends. Though from anyone watching from afar, it looked like Momo was wrestling with the ground.

“Give up!”
