✧ARMOR WARS: UAU EXHIBIT ✧

Screens dotted the walls and holographic displays gave a more 3D vision of the going-ons within the various arenas yet they were far from the only eyecatchers within UAU's exhibit.

The school, and more importantly several wealthy sponsors and advertisers, had spared no expense in setting up this event. Replicas of gear employed by the contestants was set within glass cases alongside prototypes under development by various companies as well as the latest new releases. Scattered throughout the exhibit were several testing zones akin to large, high-tech versions of batting cages, each with several pieces of equipment available to try out.

Interspersed between the exhibits and elaborate decorations were a variety of stands, many of which were already attracting crowds. Some sold food or beverages, others advertised companies, products or even hero agencies and yet more provided various means of entertainment. With the ambience brought in by the audience it was bound to be a blast!

Gear: Jeanne’s Arch

Description: An ornately decorated stone arch. Walking through it grants you a portable cannon with a single cannonball in it and changes your clothing to a medieval equivalent. The arch can only be used once per round.
Drawback: The clothing manifested by the arch may be positively silly. Additionally there is a chance the cannon does not contain a cannonball meaning you’re just lugging around a heavy piece of iron.

Gear: ShockStick v1

Description: An unremarkable jet black metal rod, roughly the size and shape of an EpiPen. When engaged by pressing a button, it can be jabbed into someone to deliver an electric shock. It has 3 settings, labelled ‘Deter’, ‘Stun’, and ‘Disable’.
Drawbacks: Due to an error with the voltage-gating, the settings may not be descriptive of their actual function. When the drawback is triggered ‘Deter’ delivers a shock strong enough to knock someone out, ‘Stun’ is about as effective as a joy buzzer and ‘Disable’ short-circuits the device for one round. Additionally, the metal casing is not insulated properly so the device will shock the user as well.

Description: A pair of thick, brass knuckles that cover the top of the hand to guard it. These bad boiz have been modified to provide an option of 50\50 chance of either launching a firework explosion upon impact, or bursting out gunpowder! A gust of wind NORMALLY pushes the fireworks & gunpowder towards the opponent. Nothin' beats the element of surprise, suckaaaaas!
Drawback: They may heat up warmer than a toasted marshmallow. The fireworks will spark towards the user, gunpowder is pretty darn flammable and may dust back on the user when this option is activated with the gust mechanism failing.

Description: A mirror shield that can absorb and reflect projectiles by temporarily storing them in a pocket dimension and then firing them back out.
Drawback: Sometimes the shield straight up won't work or it will fire what it has stored randomly

Drawback: The spring is janky as hell, there's a 50% chance it's gonna whip and nay into the user's face.

Drawback: There is a chance it will not transform, completely ruining your plan.

Description: A pair of thick yo-yos that can have rounded, saw-like panels emerge from its side! These are triggered by a sleeper throw, or traditional rapid throws, but doing rock the cradle will trigger another mechanism to cause a plume of dust to obstruct vision! This tracks with other tricks, too! GO GO GADGET YO-YO!

Lost in the Exhibit

Crys arrived at the UAU exhibit for the Armor Wars event that was being held. She quietly and emotionlessly walked along the exhibit hall. Even though she was attending in her hero uniform she used her quirk to modify its appearance to be more elegant for a showing. He hair done in a pair of large twin drills that cascaded out from under her wide sun hat. Her A.L.C.H.E.M.I. visor was worn across her face in the shape of a pair reading glasses.

Crys had always been significantly fascinated by gadgetry and engineering. Considering her quirk, it took significant design and technology to be able to even just accommodate her shape and state changes. She was looking for new gadgeteers to work with in order to design new equipment for her hero work on the field. She had been thinking of how her husband's quirk might be able to power some gear or even an upgrade of her current equipment. She also considered studying the craft herself. Her quirk made for a very adaptable material and if she could learn how to mold and manipulate it into items she could grant to worthwhile heroes.

Even though she wished to mingle and learn from possible engineers but she also didn't like interacting with people much... She wasn't good at socializing with people... She had gotten better since meeting her husband, but she still struggled conversationally. So she just hyper fixated on the displays instead. After a while, she didn't even seem register anyone else around as she examined the exhibits.

Kei expected something to happen in response to all the disasters. They were, well, disasters after all. Several students caught in a real-life scenario, where they had to act on the lessons they learned before they were officially licensed as heroes. So when Kei heard that the hero department was issuing a challenge to test everyone's ability to react to the unexpected, he was glad. Anything to prepare them for something like that to happen again was great in his book.

What he didn't see coming however was his own involvement as an inventor, welcome to craft anything he so desired to be tested by the students who took part in the event. He didn't want to at first, due to not liking the prospect of the gear breaking down during their trial, but after hearing that Quirks would be turned off he was convinced. No offence to them but if they're without their powers the whole time they needed all the help they could get.

Kei's gear being entered in did mean he had to attend the exhibit as well. Which he wasn't fond of either but eh, what could he do? He had to go. Bring his A game as an expert in the field, explaining what each piece of gear did as if he knew what everyone made.

He didn't, so he would definitely rely on his memory from reading all the plaques each item had.

In any case, Kei was walking around the exhibit in his usual coveralls - wondering if he should've dressed better for the event but too late for that now - glancing at the screens as he made his rounds for people he should help. He could pick out some people he recognized trying to make the best of their situation. Jun pulled out a car door as a shield. Farrin's looking mighty sluggish without his Quirk but still had his strength. Miroru's putting that sweater to good use. Gen got the freaking blimp, even if it wasn't heading towards the goal yet. Freja and Emilia ran in ready to rumble. And Kaida... oh God, Kaida.

He eventually peeled his eyes away to spot a lot of hair and hat in his vision. Right, help the visitors who were actually here. Grounding himself with a deep breath, Kei walked up to the woman focusing on the displays. "Hi there, welcome! I'm Kei Hada, third year support major at UAU! If you have any questions regarding anything you see here let me know!" Nailed it.

Lost in Translation

Crys continued through the exhibit with the same stern expression of supposed disinterest. Her face not matching her adorable appearance as she made her way along each of the displays.She was pleased without too many people crowded around her as she studied over the gadgets being showcased as the other guests were far more focused on the UAU arenas or the testing areas. They were displaying practical uses of the gear, but Cry had a vivid imagination and inventive mind when it came to using equipment and she was looking for more specific items to use as grounds for personal commission pieces.

Suddenly, an excited voice spoke out next to Crys pulling her attention from her examinations. As professional as they sounded, it was clear they had a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Crys turned to look the young man that had approached her. Crys was use to having to look up to people being as short as she was, so her eyes arched up slightly behind her glasses as she met Kei's friendly expression with an unchanging look of stone. He was a support major, so he was precisely whom she was looking to speak with.

"My name is Chrysopoeia." Crys said with a monotone voice that matched her stoic expression. "Which of these are your designs?" Crys asked trying to gauge what she could expect from his craftsmanship. She didn't mean to come off as unfriendly or dismissive, but she just was not good at socializing and tended to speak rather bluntly. Her stoic nature didn't make it any more welcoming. She might have been a computer from how logical and dehuman her demeanor was.

Oh God.

Kei's not good with stoic people. Stoic people could hide their true thoughts behind impassive faces, free to judge others (read: him) as much as they pleased without consequence. Because what was he gonna do, call them out on it? Attempt to read their mind and be wrong in the process? He too had a bad habit of jumping to conclusions and casting his own judge based on covers. He just couldn't mask it as well.

So the student's smile was maybe a little strained as he spoke, trying to push himself through the interaction. Especially since he heard of this woman before. Talk about pressure to impress. "Chrysopoeia-san, the Iron Doll Hero! It's an honour to meet you!" She didn't offer a hand to shake so he didn't either. It was just as well, she went right to the questions. "Oh actually, most of my stuff's bein' used in one of the arenas. But! There's one thing around here that's mine."

Kei's eyes scanned the tables and- right there. He picked up a cricket, holding it in his palm for the hero to see. "This here's a cricket! Name pendin'- I can show you what it does in the test area." He pointed a thumb behind him to said testing zone. Hopefully one would be empty by the time they get there.

Ready to be Wowed

Crys nodded along from the young man's recognition of who she was. She wasn't much of one for a celebrity status from being a hero, but knew that it was important for her goal and setting the idea of her as a standard to the public. So she was appreciative that this student knew who she was, even if her face didn't show that.

Crys followed Kei to the one display that he didn't have in the arena. He proudly revealed the tiny device. Crys examined it in his hand, her stoic face difficult to read as she analyzed the gadget. She silently went with him over to the testing area to try out the cricket. Crys knew all to well the value of small packages having large payloads, so she was fascinated to see how exactly this item functioned. Depending on its utility, it may be something she could find interest in purchasing or even working further with this boy to commission future pieces.

She was still quiet. His eye might be twitching more. He rubbed it. Just relax, Kei. You haven't been scolded yet. You're fine. You're fine. He took a deep breath. "Okay, test area!" He turned around and began to walk there, eyeing behind himself to make sure that the hero was following along.

Only when she stepped in the miniature arena as well did he turn back around to face her. "Alright, this-" the student held up the item once again. "Is the cricket! What this does is it blocks out every sound within a three meter radius from it. Better to demonstrate this than just explain it." With that introduction finished, he tossed it in the middle of the stage, and it emitted a field when it landed.

All of a sudden, the chatter of visitors, noise from TVs, even the sound of one's breathing; all would go away. The breathing part always psyched Kei out; he took a deep breath just to make sure his lungs were still working. Confirming that they were still fine, he looked at Crys and raised his hands to clap them once he caught her attention. No sound would come from them either. He did this several times to show that the cricket was indeed blocking out the noise.

Then the student did jazz hands. Because yaaay it's working. He might've forgotten that demonstrating equipment without talking about it was awkward as hell. Hopefully she wouldn't mind that much.

Applicable Silence

Crys listened along as Kei explained the function of the small plastic gadget before tossing into the center of the testing area. Crys marveled emotionlessly at the silence. Her stoic face mouthed something as it appeared she tried to say something within the field. She was surprised that it had managed to cancel all outside noise as well. An unexpected function, it held a fair amount of utility.

Crys made her way to the edge of the field of silence. Sticking her hand out of the field she made a sharp snap with her fingers. The area she was in remained silent. She then leaned herself out just enough for her ear to exit the area to see if she would be able to hear while still mostly submerged in the field. Crys had read up on the ill effects that pure silence could do to someone, how sensory deprivation affected the mind. This little device could be quiet dangerous if used in such a manner.

Crys wondered about the other functions and capabilities of this gadget, how it could be modified, what were its limitations. Crys was impressed by this student's product. She turned herself back towards him. This had been an eye opener for holes in her own training as well. Despite the number of languages that she could speak, sign language was not one of them. An oversight she would need to correct. She presented a notable gesture that would likely be understood regardless: a thumbs-up.

Kei waited anxiously as the hero did her own tests with the device, tapping his foot in anticipation for the verdict. The way she experimented with it was about what he expected- especially when she breached the border only partially. Even when part of one's body was outside, one's ears wouldn't hear the snap of fingers if they remained inside the barrier.

When he received a thumbs up, he smiled. Gadget success! He returned the thumbs up in response, even giving two back for good measure. Everything was going well.

Until the cricket began to shake. The sound coming back was what the student would notice first, muted as it was yet still should've been an impossibility considering the device at work. With wide eyes he tried to reach for the item but it was too late; voices and cheers from those watching the screens came back, and the cricket began to add its own noises to the mix.

With a curse, Kei collapsed to the ground, hands covering his ears to try to block out the noise. It wasn't working well by the way he was curling in on himself. His creation- it was failing.

He's in so much trouble.

Applicable Noise

The small gadget was a rather impressive marvel of engineering. The young inventor gave an excited display to mirror and overcompensate Crys' show of approval. But then device began vibrate violently. Sound began to return, dull and muted at first, but when it failed outright, the cricket began to add its own noise. It wasn't just so bad as a sudden return of sound, it was practically an audio grenade as it approached its apex.

Crys continued to stare unmoved at the device as it malfunctioned. While Kei collapsed to the ground to cover his ears and dampen the painful sound, Crys took note of the fascinating development from this bug. Something like this could be equally useful if applied properly. She used a similar audio attack using her quirk to create neutralizing noise. She had counter measures for it such as her A.L.C.H..E.M.I.+'s audio controls, but she also had trained against the effects before she had the tool.

The hand holding the cricket suddenly changed shape and chemical makeup. It encapsulated around the cricket as an urethane polymer orb, immediately snuffing out the noise inside the sound-canceling material. She looked to Kei on the floor. She blinked stoically as though waiting for the next step of his demonstration.

Kei's hands were still cupping his ears, blocking out the noise as best as he could while thinking to himself just how he could fix this mess. Except even doing that was hard; the noise was disrupting any thoughts he had, so his brain was coming up empty on what to do. He had to do something though. He couldn't just let the cricket continue its chirping.

Just when he was about to move though, the noise stopped. He could think clearly again. Confused, the student opened his eyes - when did he close them? - to look to where his invention once was, but it was no longer there. He looked up to the hero then, whose hand was now in a ball shape. Did she pick it up? Was that why the noise stopped.

With a sigh he pushed himself to stand, dusting off his clothes with his hands before raising them in a placating manner. "God, I'm so sorry for that. That wasn't supposed to happen." The purposeful silence from the hero put him on edge now that it was no longer caused by the cricket. She must be disappointed.

Kei clasped his hands together, nervous. "Thanks for snuffin' it out."

Gross Competence

Crys looked at the boy expectantly, confused by his apologies and nerve-wrecking. When it seemed that the demonstration had finished Crys just kept staring at him. When he still didn't respond she finally filled the awkward silence.

"How much are you looking to sell each unit for?" Crys asked bluntly. She was still very interested in the gadget, though she did have ideas of modifications that would make it more harmoniously utilized to her and her needs. "I will also need a full schematic run down so we can begin work on some further features that will function compatibly with my quirk and gadgetry. I would like to start with an order of 10 units but we can begin the negotiations for a gross (144 units). Do you work with other fields beyond sound-based technology? I wish to also see a full catalog from you Hada-san." Crys stated with interested far passing her disinterested tone.

Crys looked to the ball of a hand still holding the encapsulated device. "When does the battery run out? Or can I expect a remote off switch?" Crys said, already tired of holding the chirping gadget into silence, but it did make her fascinated by the idea of if the sounds could also be internalized into the gadget as a powerful vibration. There was a great deal of destructive potential when it came to vibration, and if she could find a way to make use of that remotely, there was even greater possibilities for this Cricket.

Here it is. The moment of truth. While on the outside Kei seemed, well, concerned enough given what just happened, but on the inside he was panicking.

Because this really was it. He lost his shot in potentially working with the hero, and he knew that word of what occurred was sure to pass to her coworkers within her agency. That's even without mentioning the others in the event who bore witness to his failure. He's a laughing stock. A wannabe tinkerer. A fraud-

What was that about selling units?

While Kei couldn't be shocked into silence since he was quiet already, his face did shift away from stress into genuine surprise. His mouth moved without sound for a moment before he got himself to speak. "Uh. Pardon?" He coughed into his hand to loosen his throat some more. "Well- I didn't set a price yet but given its size and relatively small area of effect I was thinking 5000 yen per?"

He blinked a lot at the sudden flood of questions, wondering where this enthusiasm came from. Taking a deep breath, he tried to keep pace as best as he can. "Of course, this is a steppin' stone so suggestions on further improvements are welcome-" Did she say 144 units?? The student tried - and failed - to keep the shock off his face. The junior rambled on in an attempt to calm down. "But yeah, I major in mechanical engineering. Utility is my specialty but I've also crafted weapons. If we step off the test area I can run my creations by you as I don't have them here."

Kei points at the encased Cricket then. "And that's meant to last 10 minutes but you're free to break it. It's a prototype. A remote switch is a good idea though." All things considered, he should've thought of that himself in case the device malfunctioned. A mental note for himself for when he gets to it.

In any case, he was floored. Here the hero was, interested in what he had to offer. He could only hope to make the most of the opportunity.

Commission Requested

"Very good, we can begin the commission process as soon as possible. I will send you the schematics to my equipment for integration and synchronization. While it may be outside your realm for development, I can also commission for the materials needed to mimic my quirk. My quirk makes for difficult implementation as my equipment must be able to be change its composition and state of matter as I do."

Crys collapsed the ball that was her hand in on itself, crushing the small device within. It then became like liquid metal as it flowed as a stream to deposit the debris into Kei's hand. As her quasi-solid arm moved back to itself like mud, it solidified and returned to a normal appearance. "This proves a more difficult task, but not an impossible one. Given access to my A.L.C.H.E..M.I.+'s hard drives, you should have the information needed to synthesize a mimicked material."

Crys straightened her sunhat slightly as she willed her outfit to become her hero uniform, manipulating the material just as she does her body. "Once we have the proper procedures and designs ready, we will finalize the contract and move into payment and manufacturing." Crys tapped on the side of the visor that her hat and glasses had become. "I have emailed you my information. You will be hearing from me within the week. Good day Hada-san."

Crys said everything as empty as a robot before turning and walking away, heading for the door. She had spent enough time at this exhibit and now needed to return home and make her own plans of how she wished to implement these new gadgets to her duties.
